FROM THE TOP
LEIGH CENTURIONS ACTING CEO STEVE OPENSHAW
A WARM WELCOME
Tonight's game with Hunslet Hawks brings us the first of
two rearranged fixtures which came as a result of our
fantastic Ladbrokes Challenge Cup run.
We welcome the Hawks, their Directors, staff, players and supporters
to LSV this evening. Coach Barry Eaton has a well drilled group whose
league position does not mirror the performances and close results
over the last few weeks. With livewire half back Andy Kain and young
Leeds Rhinos starlet Jordan Lilley, this evening’s encounter will be an
interesting challenge.
FEELING THE LOVE
The cup run came to a dignified end at Warrington where a
quick-fire 10 minutes after half time put us in a catch-up
position which despite close encounters we simply could not
overcome.
Whilst disappointed, the performance from the lads gained enormous
praise from many quarters, with the huge travelling army of
supporters also received glowing tributes from the RFL and
Warrington Wolves. Once again the Club from top to bottom thank
every single one of you for your support.
In fact, there was an amusing moment when whilst beating the
mighty Wire at half time, the 4,000 plus strong Leyther Army sang
'Are you watching Super League?' SLE General Manager Blake Solly
was sat to our side prompting Chairman Mike Norris to quip: 'They
mean you, Blake!', which brought a warm smile and resounding nod.
RFL Chairman Brian Barwick, a man who knows a few things about
TV and the importance of a quality product for the viewing audience
was also glowing in his praise at half time, confirming 'This is TV gold,
superb, this is what we want to see'.
THE REAL LEIGH
So yes, we won some friends which is what we always knew
would happen once people saw us live rather than simply
reading social media and the array of angry letters in the
trade press!
However, as a club we are bored to death of the savage media attacks
which we have faced over our supposed 'thuggish' tendencies from
the players and have made our feelings known at every level. The
Warrington game showed to 2 million people that we are more than
capable of controlling our aggression and playing fast open rugby if
we are allowed to and our players are protected by the officials.
We have lost just twice this season fair and square, in both games
there was not one unsavoury incident. A quicker game brings greater
entertainment, that’s all we ask for - the opportunity to entertain and
the referees to protect the players.
LEIGH CENTURIONS GOLF DAY
Tuesday 16th June brought our annual Golf Day sponsored
by Preston Audi, O2 Leigh, Maxilead, and CS Civils.
80 golfers took to the Houghwood Hall Course in bright sunshine,
with the BBC Northwest Tonight cameras in attendance in another of
their 'behind the scenes' episodes.
Head of Rugby Derek Beaumont also attended in the afternoon with
new singing Mathias 'Eric' Pala who had arrived earlier in the
morning. The drinks cart was driven by Ryan Brierley and Adam
Higson, bringing welcome refreshments to the teams during the
afternoon.
Closing the event was Mike Latham, who hosted an evening BBQ and
Awards Ceremony. The Team Winner of this superb event was secured
by Preston Audi. It was a wonderful day in a lovely setting and
everyone who attended enjoyed the day which was a resounding
success.
Team photos are available on our website or by contacting
our Commercial Team on [email protected]
AND FINALLY...
Best of luck to Fuifui Moimoi who has just released his
autobiography and will be signing copies of the book after
this evening’s game.
Hopefully Fui will have several more chapters to add about his playing
career at Leigh and will be issuing an updated version in years to
come having achieved his dream of seeing Leigh Centurions reach
Super League and become established at the top level.

COACH’S
CORNER
LEIGH CENTURIONS HEAD COACH PAUL ROWLEY
GAVE DAVE PARKINSON AND A ROOM FULL OF OTHER
PRESS HIS THOUGHTS AFTER THE CENTURIONS
BATTLING 24-34 LADBROKES CHALLENGE CUP
REVERSAL AGAINST WARRINGTON AT THE
HALLIWELL JONES STADIUM.
DP: WELL CAN YOU SUM UP YOUR THOUGHTS
ON THAT GAME?
PR: We certainly didn't want to come here and be gallant losers
but that's what has happened, but the thing we've learned from it
is that we can compete with top end Super League, as well as
middle, as well as bottom, no matter who we play, ore beat, we'd
get that question about yardstick, so I think that's a pretty
comfortable yardstick for us. I thought there was two equally
matched sides out there.
We won't complete so low all season. We gave Warrington an
awful lot of possession on plays one and two - that's where we will
kick ourselves, you might talk about lessons learned and there
wasn't really a lesson there because we already know, the lesson
for us is that we can compete against the likes of Warrington, so
that should be something we take forward in our confidence and
back into our own competition, the Championship although we are
gutted to be fair.
PRESS QUESTION: THERE WAS THAT SPELL JUST
AFTER HALF-TIME WASN'T THERE PAUL?
PR: Both teams employed similar tactics, we kind of knew what
they'd do. Basically both sets of backs were doing a lot of work
around the middles; getting them tired. We saw Warrington dip
drastically towards the end of the first half. Then, we went soft in
the first ten minutes of the second half, you chuck that in with a
dodgy decision about a play-the-ball, that's not a criticism of the
referee, I thought he was outstanding; Richard Silverwood had a
real good game, that's what you get, they were just a bit too far
ahead for us; it's then ifs and buts, but that is what sport is. We
gave ourselves too much to do, but we showed what we could do
if we wanted to apply pressure.
I always said when we started off on this journey that we want to
make an impact on our community and therefore that's another
box ticked I suppose, you just want to see pride and passion and
commitment, you then chuck in a load of endeavour and skill and
you get the Leigh team. Unfortunately for us, our execution was a
little bit off at times and we handed them too much possession.
People ask will we get away with that style of play against better
opposition, well I suppose it's shown, it's not lack-lustre, it's
perfectly planned and managed and we know what we are doing;
so if we execute right, no matter who the opposition is, we'll stick
to our philosophy and our brand, which for the purest rugby
league supporter, is good to watch.
DP: AND AS YOU'VE ALREADY SAID WITH THE
SIDE MISFIRING SOMEWHAT AND THE
EXECUTION, YOU STILL CAME UP WITH FIVE
TRIES?
Exactly. We didn't manage to kick our goals did we? The
Warrington kicker kicked some crackers to be fair didn't he? We
were one try down on them which really shouldn't have been a
try if we want to look at it like that, but I don't want to. I don't
want to take anything away from Warrington, that's sport, they
were two evenly matched sides - that's the key - ultimately they
came out on top. It's sometimes a game of small margins and
they got it. On behalf of our club we wish them all the best in
pursuit of Challenge Cup victory again in the next round. I've got
a lot of respect for Warrington, but I'm sure that anyone who
didn't have, will have respect for us now!
I don't think we had any, or hardly any good ball sets in that
second half - we chucked one shape at them and scored. We are
a very, very capable side and I would summarise it by saying that
we missed a good opportunity.
PRESS QUESTION: THE RESULT ASIDE, TO BE
INVOLVED IN A GAME LIKE THAT, TELEVISED
LIVE ON THE BBC, HOW GOOD IS THAT FOR THE
CLUB?
PR: It is good for the club. I think you've seen there, with the
level of support that we've got, days like that bring awareness to
what is going on at our club. It wakes up any sleeping Leigh fans
and it galvanises the club, which in turn galvanises the town.

CAPTAIN’S
CORNER
MIKE LATHAM CAUGHT UP WITH CLUB CAPTAIN
OLIVER WILKES A FEW DAYS AFTER THE
LADBROKES CHALLENGE CUP-TIE AGAINST
WARRINGTON WOLVES
ML- Reflections on the game?
OW - We were very disappointed not to come away from the game
with something. We completed at 58 percent for the whole of the
game and it doesn’t matter who you play, you’ll struggle to win
games with a statistic like that. They are a top Super League side and
we competed well and could have put them to the sword. The game
was all about fine margins but we were architects of our own
downfall. I didn’t feel like we were beaten by a side better than
ourselves but by our own mistakes. They are about quick plays and
forcing errors but we more than matched them for all parts of the
game bar that awful period early in the second half.
ML- Kevin Penny’s second try was sensational wasn’t it?
OW - It was fantastic but AJ’s last year would give it a run for money.
Maybe we could have done a bit more to stop it as it wasn’t
undefendable. But it was a marvellous piece of athleticism and shows
just what fantastic athletes play the game. Some of the skills on
display in that game from both sides were remarkable. Some of the
tries we scored were up there with anything you see in Rugby
League.
ML - Overall the Club’s run in the Challenge Cup was
memorable wasn’t it?
OW - It was and if history repeats itself Warrington will emulate
Leeds last year in defeating us in the quarter-final and going on to
win the competition. Everyone at the Club can be proud of their
achievement, beating an ex-Super League side in London Broncos,
then two Super League sides in Salford and Wakefield along the way.
It was a big day at Warrington and showcased just what Leigh
Centurions are about to the country watching on BBC1. We attracted
the largest crowd of the weekend in the Rugby League and it shows
where the club has come from and where it can go in the future. A lot
of credit for that goes to Derek Beaumont for all he has done to
Oliver Wilkes v Warrington

galvanise the club and the backroom staff and of course the
supporters for buying into it.
ML- And seeing the terrace packed with 4,000 Leigh fans
was a fantastic sight.
OW - It was incredible. In all the years I’ve played the game I’ve
never experienced anything like it. After one of our tries, I think it was
the Gregg McNally one, I walked back to my mark and the noise of
the fans was deafening. I could feel the roar behind me- it was like a
sound-wave hitting me full-on.
ML- Ashton Sims’ ‘player-mic’ made for good viewing.
OW - It was quite funny wasn’t it? Suddenly just because he had a
mic on he became one of the nicest guys on the field. He is a
fearsome proposition on the field but a good guy and the way he
complimented Ryan and Jake afterwards on their displays was really
good. It was amazing feedback coming from a top Super League
player to two Championship players and underlined how well they
each played and how well Leigh played. The whole of the BBC
coverage was second to none. There were lots of fresh faces and
ideas in there and it made for great viewing and a refreshing change.
The Club got some really good and positive publicity from the BBC’s
coverage of us in the Wakefield and Warrington games.
ML - Back to league action in July and six games in the
Championship before the start of the Super 8s.
OW - Yes and we will approach every game with the same attitude
and thoroughness we approached the Warrington game. We’ve got a
big squad and there will be some rotation so everyone is fresh and on
the ball. We pushed a top Super League club close but we didn’t win
and we have to keep our feet on the ground. We have to focus and
work hard because if we don’t the Championship is so competitive
we will come unstuck.

BY MARK TAYLOR (LEIGH REPORTER
& WIGAN EVENING POST)
MAY YOU LIVE IN
INTERESTING TIMES...
IT HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING FEW WEEKS IN THE TAYLOR HOUSEHOLD
SINCE WARRINGTON AND LEIGH WERE DRAWN TOGETHER IN THE QUARTER
FINALS OF THE LADBROKES CHALLENGE CUP. HERE’S THE THING ...
I have been writing about Leigh since I was a teenager and
was a fan long before that. My dad is a Centurions Life
Member and long-serving kitman. My mum Christine and
auntie Jean travel home and away watching Leigh as did
their parents Les and Irene before them.
My wife Claire, however, is a dedicated Warrington fan. Not only is
she a season ticket holder who goes home and away, she is also on
the Warrington Squad Builder Committee. Claire works for Down
Under Leisure, the NRL superstore in Wigan. There’s a lot of rugby
watched between us.
We met through rugby league and happily went along to each other’s
games. In fact our second date was at Batley. Our eyes met across the
cheesy chips. As a couple we attended loads of games all over the RL
Nation, even a Challenge Cup Final.
From my point of view, it was a nice change to go to a game without
having to take my laptop. For Claire, as a Super League fan, venues
like Mount Pleasant and the South Leeds Stadium offered a strange
fascination which bordered on morbid curiosity.
We married on May 31, 2012 a day when the Olympic torch was in
Warrington. Almost inevitably, our wedding reception was held at the
Halliwell Jones Stadium and we received cards signed by the Leigh
team and Claire’s hero Adrian Morley. Our seating plan featured
tables named after Leigh (Rowley, Turley, Murphy, Woods, Drummond)
and Warrington (Morley, Hicks, Briers) players.
For our honeymoon we headed for Sydney with the second State of
Origin game at the ANZ Stadium the centrepiece of a packed
fortnight which included seven NRL games. Wearing our respective
colours, we visited some of the iconic venues of the sport such as the
Leichardt Oval, the WIN Stadium and the Brookvale Oval.
It was a lot of fun living in Sydney’s rugby league bubble. I will always
remember talking to Ian Millward’s agent and dad Bob in a
Wollongong restaurant where their biggest concern was whether the
Moonraker pub in Leigh was still open.
Friends would sometimes joke what would happen if Leigh ever
played Warrington and we laughed it off while there was a bit of us
which genuinely feared such a thing.
Our first son Harry was born in 2013 and had Warrington and Leigh
kits bought for him weeks before he arrived. He visited the grounds
of both teams when he was just a few weeks old. When Leigh and
Warrington met in a friendly early last year he wore a Wolves shirt
and Leigh shorts.
As Leigh’s stock began to rise, winning the Championship in 2014
then topping it again this year, Warrington looked to be going in the
opposite direction with their performances swinging from the sublime
to the ridiculous.
The odds of our teams meeting in a competitive game for the first
WWW.LEIGHCENTURIONS.COM
time since Claire and I got together became shorter after Leigh upset
Salford in the Challenge Cup, setting up a tie with Wakefield.
When Centurions were getting battered in the first half, the danger of
a Centurions v Wolves match-up was fading fast. But we all know
what happened after that with Leigh storming back for a second win
to be filed under “giant-killing”.
As the reporters stood around in the Belle Vue press room waiting for
the quarter final draw, I told them that Leigh would draw Warrington.
And of course they did. Claire was watching too, at home with our
newborn son Samuel Thurston (named after the Queensland halfback) and her Warrington supporting sister and nieces.
I looked to the ceiling and puffed out a heavy sigh when this dreaded
tie was confirmed. A FaceTime conversation followed when Claire
held up her Warrington mug to the phone. I won’t tell you exactly
what I replied with, but it’s a well known terrace chant which seems
to upset Wolves fans. The battle lines were drawn and I’d not even
got in the car to drive home.
The chat that night was playfully polite though occasionally escalated
into what is annoyingly referred to these days as “banter”.
It turns out Warrington fans don’t like it when you remind them Leigh
won the league more recently than them.
With the cup tie so far away, it drifted into the background though
Micky Higham’s move back to Leigh threw some petrol on the
bonfire.
As the Super League club, the pressure was all on
Warrington - and therefore Claire. A Warrington win and
nothing changes. A Leigh win and the house would be
painted red and white. It seemed like a fair deal. Hopefully
next time!

State of Origin game in Sydney in 2012

LEIGH MINERS RANGERS:
Serbia Tour
Miners’ Tony Doyle recently led the England Lions
as vice-captain on their tour of Serbia. Tony, who
was joined by coach Mick Blakeley and teammate Darryl Appleby on the two-match visit to
the Balkans, sent this update from their time
overseas:
It was good to be selected, it was a reward for the efforts
of the previous season playing in the North West Counties
Leagues and although that’s a few levels below NCL it’s
still a great thing to be recognised for having a good
season. The programme they are now running gives lads
playing at lower levels of the amateur game the
opportunity to tour every year and experience the
international set-up and what comes with a tour. My
family, colleagues and the kids I work with were made up
that I had been selected.
I really enjoyed the rugby side of the tour. Serbia are an
emerging nation as far as rugby goes but they absolutely
love the game and their knowledge of the British game is
spot-on. The matches were very physical, as you can
imagine their boys are pretty big and aggressive so they
liked to dish out the biff. The Test match was a close game
full of scraps and was a good contest, they can actually
play a bit of footy and have clearly been watching the
Super League but they also knew a bit about the amateur
game and are keen to learn more and link up with the
English game.
We won the warm-up game with 50 against a Belgrade
select but the second against the full Serbia team was a
real humdinger and we only won by 2 points. I enjoyed
playing, it was a lot different to what I’m used to, you had
lads from NWC Division 4 playing with lads from NCL
Premier so finding the balance of ability was a test but I
think we managed to find a system that worked and
overall it was a real success.
Serbia is beautiful, a really nice country especially in
Belgrade the place was buzzing; it’s obviously still on the
recovery from the Yugoslavia war in some parts but the
majority looks really nice. Roughly 90 pence a pint and
you could get a good two course meal with a drink for
less than a fiver.
We also visited an orphanage and school for
disadvantaged children while we were there and on a
personal level that was a highlight of the tour for me. It’s
very similar to the job I do now and I was asked to do
some work on the visit which went down a storm.
The kids loved it and I gave away some kit and clothes
and they were chasing me back to the coach for photos
and allsorts, it was a real eye opener and makes you
realise how lucky we are.

IN TOWN TODAY
HUNSLET HAWKS
CHRIS STOTT WELCOMES THIS EVENING’S VISITORS
In a fixture rearranged due to the Cup exploits of the
Centurions, Leigh welcome Hunslet Hawks to the LSV as they
look to continue their unbeaten home record.
When the two sides last met on Good Friday at the South Leeds
Stadium, Leigh ran out 42-6 victors in poor conditions thanks to a
superb second half showing after only leading 6-0 at the break.
A lot of sides have found Hunslet a tough nut to crack, particularly on
their own patch, and have run some of the top sides close. Backed by
a Dual Registration agreement with the Leeds Rhinos, the Hawks have
also earned five wins which for a side who where only promoted to
the Championship this season is an admirable achievement.
Barry Eaton’s side may be one which is fairly reliant on its partnership
with neighbours Leeds, but it is one which has a blend of experience
and youth, and one with plenty of Championship know how.
Vinny Finigan has been plying his trade in the Championship since
2011 with Sheffield Eagles, Dewsbury and Batley before joining the
Hawks. Finigan in his days with Sheffield won the 2012 Grand Final
and was on the score sheet as they defeated the Centurions in the
2011 Play-Offs. Blessed with pace and the ability to finish any given
chance, the Winger is a real threat on the fringes, as is former
Warrington man Richie Barnett. A man with vast experience, his
leadership and experience could be more of a positive factor for the
Hawks than his undoubted ability.
Ex Featherstone Half Back Andy Kain adds direction to the Hunslet
outfit. Leigh fans will know how affective Kain can be having been an
integral part of the Rovers side which battled Leigh on many
occasions.
Captain Jack Lee will also be a man Barry Eaton will turn to for on
field leadership. The hooker, who has had spells at York, Featherstone
and Castleford, is a creative spark from dummy half who will create
chances from any quick play the balls that fall his side’s way.
Playmaker Danny Grimshaw featured against the Broncos having
recently returned to the club after a short spell with Featherstone. He,
like Kain and Lee, will hold the key to any Hunslet result as they are
the sort of players who create the chances for the likes of Barnett and
Finigan to finish.
The link up with the Leeds Rhinos has allowed Hunslet to field a
number of talented players including the likes of Jimmy Keinhorst and
Brett Delaney. Winger Luke Briscoe has featured heavily for the Hawks
this season and was their sole try scorer in the game over Easter. If he
were to feature he could add real vibrancy on the flank especially
when he ducks inside from the right.
Leigh will have to be on the guard to avoid what would be a huge
upset. This could be quite an intriguing game if the last meeting is
anything to go by. Let’s hope for better weather this time around to
go with an equally positive result.

RESERVES 2015
LEIGH CENTURIONS
Leigh Centurions Reserves ran in eight tries as they earned an
excellent 42-12 victory against Sheffield Eagles at Sheffield
Hallam University.
Paul Anderson’s side swiftly recovered from a delayed journey over the
Pennines to surge into a 32-0 interval lead and maintained their
advantage in an increasingly scrappy second half.
“It was a really good team performance and I was very happy with the
side,” Anderson said.
“We got delayed on the way across and the journey took three hours
so we had to quickly get changed and had time only for a ten minute
warm-up, so the preparation wasn’t ideal.
“But the lads began the game really well and we scored some good
tries.”
Kurt Haggerty was the stand-out performer for the Centurions and Matt
Sarsfield continued his comeback with a strong game in the second
row.
“Kurt was outstanding and did the job we asked him to do,” Anderson
said. “He got plenty of game-time and was brilliant for us, running over
people and showing a great skill level too on the edge. Sarsy did well
and I thought Eze Harper had a strong game too, but then they all
played well.
“We picked up a few knocks and had two players sin-binned in the
second half so we were down to 11 men at one stage. But after going
a while without a competitive game it was good to put in a good
performance and secure the win.”
The tries were shared between eight players with Tyler Whittaker, Sam
Baggaley, Eze Harper, Jacque Peet, Jack Hansen, Brad Smith, Elliot Liku
and Kurt Haggerty all crossing and Hansen tagging on five goals. Mitch
Vincent, Connor Scott and Adam Newby scored tries for the Eagles.

OUR SPECIAL GUEST TONIGHT
MICK NANYN
For this evening’s game Leigh
Centurions are delighted to
welcome Mick Nanyn as special
guest of the Club.
Mick has just announced his
retirement and brought his prolific
playing career to a close.
He retires as the sixth-highest
points-scorer in Rugby League
history, a remarkable achievement
that sees him included with some of
the greatest names to ever grace the
game.
Mick began his career with Swinton
in 1999 and later played for
Rochdale Hornets, Whitehaven,
Widnes, Oldham and Leigh
Centurions before ending his career
where he started with the Lions.
His career statistics are set out
below courtesy of RFL statistician
Dan Spencer.
Mick retains his involvement at LSV
as an important staff member of
Leigh Community Trust.

ON THIS DAY
IN HISTORY
JULY
8
BY MIKE LATHAM
2001
Leigh Centurions had finished top of the Northern Ford
Premiership, but they suffered a shock home 15-14
defeat to Oldham in their play-off preliminary semifinal.
The Centurions walked away with the league, finishing nine
points clear at the top after losing just two games in the regular
season. That gave them the perfect opportunity to book their
passage to the latter stages, but Oldham - who ended the
season in fourth spot some 10 points behind Leigh - had not
read the script.
Masterminded by player-coach Mike Ford, Oldham forced the
home side into a catalogue of uncharacteristic errors to become
the first team to win at Hilton Park for 15 months.
Leigh scored three tries to two as they overturned a 9-0 halftime deficit to lead 14-11, but a fine solo effort from Mark
Sibson 16 minutes from time proved to be the winner.
“We didn’t play to our potential against Oldham so the players
are now aware that anything other than their best will not be
good enough,” admitted coach Paul Terzis.
Dave Bradbury v Oldham, 2001
2010
Leigh Centurions went down 34-26 in a top-of-thetable Thursday night clash at Featherstone Rovers,
deservedly claiming a bonus point with ten late points
in a thrilling encounter.
In the first quarter, Rovers built an into an 18-0 advantage
before being pegged back by a spirited effort from the visitors.
Rovers opened the scoring through Zak Hardacre to score and
added further tries by Kyle Briggs and Liam Finn in a
devastating opening.
The Centurions got on the scoresheet when Martyn Ridyard cut
through to score a converted try and then Lee Mitchell went
over. Robbie Paul then created a try for Jake Emmitt with a
smart kick but Andy Kain sent Dane Manning strolling through
from close range with Briggs adding the goal for a 24-16
Rovers lead at half-time.
Sam Smeaton extended Rovers’ lead with two tries and seal the
game, Briggs taking his tally to five goals. But Leigh fought back
spiritedly with a Matty Blythe try from fully 60 metres after he
charged down a kick. The visitors claimed a deserved bonus
point when Dave McConnell grubber-kicked to the line and
Tommy Goulden was awarded a try by the video referee which
Ridyard converted with his third goal.
The Leigh team was: Donlan; Maden, Blythe, Leuluai,
Stanton; Ridyard, Paul; Emmitt, McConnell, Bibey, Taylor,
Mitchell, Armistead.
Subs: Duffy, Goulden, McCarthy, Hill.

LEIGH EAST ARLFC
Fun Day
Playing Matters
In May the club hosted its annual fun day and it
turned out to be a tremendous success.
East’s talented young crop of players were joined by Head
Coach Paul Wingfield, Club Captain Dean Balmer and ex
Leigh East and Leigh Centurions favourite James Taylor, who
kindly gave up an afternoon to present trophies and meet
various teams and age groups from across the county.
With over 35 under 7’s players now registered Niki
Howarth and Wayne Robinson have decided to run
two U7’s teams.
A cubs team for more junior players has also been been set
up and ex Leigh favourite Lee Hansen is assisting keith
Lathom with some fantastic starter training sessions, which
the kids are throughly enjoying.
Both open age teams are riding high within their respective
divisions and the under 18s currently sit second in Premier 1.
All fixtures and match day write ups can be found on our
twitter page @LeighEast
With two tough away fixtures coming up against a
rejuvenated Castleford Panthers and high flying Featherstone
Lions the next home game for the first team is against table
toppers Millom on Saturday 25th July. The match will be
staged on the outside pitch, due to the upgrades to playing
surfaces, which will be taking place over the next few weeks.
Donations were greatly received from Leigh Centurions and
various other local businesses, which were raffled or auctioned
off on the day. It was an early start for all the volunteers but
with a glorious afternoon of sunshine, a barbecue and plenty
of drinks on hand the day ran smoothly.
A lads against dads match was also staged and the spoils
were shared. Although it probably took the dads a lot
longer to recover than it did the lads.

PROGRAMMES FROM
THE PAST BY MIKE LATHAM
LONG TERM LEIGH SUPPORTER MR NORMAN STARKIE HAS VERY KINDLY
LENT SOME OF HIS VAST PROGRAMME COLLECTION TO THE EDITOR AND
EACH ISSUE THIS YEAR WE’LL TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE ARCHIVES.
For today’s look back at old
programmes we go back to 1949 and
Hunslet’s first post war visit to Leigh,
their first ever to the Kirkhall Lane
ground.
The match was staged on Saturday 8 January
with a 2-30pm kick-off and a modest 16page programme was produced for supporters
at a cost of threepence.
James Hilton was the Leigh Chairman and
Jack Harding the vice-chairman and the other
board members were Messrs Higgins, Palmer,
Fletcher, Hesford and Rubin. Emlyn Jenkins
was the team manager and coach with Bill
Hughes the trainer.
In welcoming the visitors the programme
editor remarked that Hunslet’s last visit to
Leigh had been to the Mather Lane ground
which had been lost during the war due to
the extension of the cable works. “We give
Hunslet a cheerful welcome,” he wrote.
“Speaking of Mather Lane, it was there in the
old days that the “Cherry and Whites” nearly
held a powerful Hunslet to a draw in the
Rugby League Cup. I gather that their
forwards had a great reputation and were
known as the “Terrible Six.” The Yorkshiremen
went on to win the cup. A more recent
memory was our surprising and welcome win
at Hunslet in November. There were some
gloomy faces until that afternoon and then
we all trotted out that threadbare saying ‘the
34
THE CENT U R I O N
WWW.LEIGHCENTURIONS.COM
corner is turned.’ We still have our troubles
but let us forget them and look forward to a
good game this afternoon.”
Elsewhere in the programme the editor
reflected on the Christmas period when Leigh
gained only one point. Chairman James Hilton
was quoted: “I want to say that special
tactical talks between the players and Mr
Jenkins have started this week.”
Leigh made several changes to their side for
Hunslet’s visit. “But please do not get the
idea that there is any panic,” the editorial
continued. “They are made because of injury. I
regret to say that Jack Bowen has a suspected
fracture of the cheekbone. Alf Edge and
hooker Parr are also
injured. However, you
will welcome the
return of Jimmy Rowe
and I don’t suppose
Bob Montford will be
found wanting. By the
way Jack Bowen is
coming up from Wales
to live in the house
prepared for departed
Desmond Clarkson.
We hope his sojourn
in the town will be a
happy one.”
Meanwhile Major Jack
Rubin had donated a magnificent silver cup to
the schoolboys’ league for competition
amongst the local schools towards the end of
each season.
Among the advertisers were Ward’s English
Hats, famous for over a century and available
from Danby’s of Market St and Lord St, Leigh.
The Spinning Jenny Snack Bar offered a quick
snack at a reasonable charge adjacent to the
Trolley Bus Terminus and Leigh Civic
Restaurant offered a good Tea after the game.
Eze Football pools offered bigger dividends
and quicker returns and the Army Cadet Force
had an appeal for donations. The Crown Hotel
on Hope Street was the only public house to
carry an advert. Supporters could follow their
team by using Lancashire United Transport
and Duva Bread, “the best than can be
produced” was all the rage.
The record books show that Hunslet won the
game 6-3 before a crowd of 8,500 spectators.
Frank Daley scored Leigh’s try eight minutes
after half-time after W Burnell and Ted Carroll
scored first-half tries for Hunslet. Leigh went
on to finish 18th in the league with 14 wins
and five draws from 36 games, Hunslet
finishing two places higher.
The Leigh team was:
Ledgard; Sale, Daley, Baxter, Wood; Rowe,
Riley; Johnson, Stephens, Coffey, Pawsey,
Alder, Wheatley. Hunslet- Waite; Williamson,
Evans, Watson, Carroll; Ruston, A Burwell;
Fogharty, Whitehead, Newbould, Metcalfe,
Thompson, W Burnell.

LCT & CENTURIONS
CENTURIONS REACH OUT
TO THE HARD TO ENGAGE
Over the past six months we have
been working with the Wigan Youth
Offending Team and a group of
young offenders on the New Skills
programme.
The New Skills programme aims to
increase the employability of 14-19 yearold young NEET residents through
changing beneficiaries' attitudes
towards learning, work and employment
by providing an environment at the
Leigh Sports Village that motivates them
by delivering several different elements
such as teamwork, communication, self
control, anger management and positive
life paths whilst using sport as an
innovative vehicle to engagement.
“The staff (Michael Ostick, Mick Nanyn
and Carlie Unsworth) are amazing at
keeping the group engaged in activities,
which is not always easy with low
attention spans and little or no
36
THE CENT U R I O N

concentration, that’s the group not the
lads!” commented Hannah Forbes, Trust
Manager.
The programme is in full swing and has
been running for over 12 months now
and as part of the programme the young
adults are taken to Challenge 4 Change
in Manchester to take part in a special
Teams not Gangs session.
Team not Gangs is a partnership project
that uses sport to tackle some of the
major issues surrounding gang culture in
our communities. The project aims to
help reduce anti-social behaviour, gang
related activities, provide a pathway to
progression, improve personal
development, communication skills and
help the participants gain respect.
The sessions are a hard-hitting insight
into what life in prison is really like with
staff members having over 70 years of
experience of prison life in varied roles.
The participants come out of the session
with their eyes open to how easy it is to
go down the wrong path in life.
“The Teams not Gangs session has really
made me think about the choices I make
in my everyday life. It has also made me
think about the friends that I choose and
how this could affect me” commented a
participant from the course.

NEW GENERAL MANAGER
JASON DONOHUE
Leigh
Centurions are
pleased to
confirm the
appointment of
Jason Donohue
as General
Manager of the
Club.
The former Leigh halfback who is also
Chairman of the Leigh Centurions Players
Association joins the Club in a full-time
role with immediate effect.
Explaining the appointment Leigh
Centurions Head of Rugby and club owner
Derek Beaumont said: “We have made
great strides to strengthen the on-field
team as the recent signings of
internationals Gareth Hock, Micky Higham
and Mathias Pala testify.
“As we strive to better the club in all areas
we must be mindful that we have the
necessary infrastructure off the field to
support the on-field ambitions and Jason’s
appointment fulfils that objective.
“Our Operations Director, Allan Rowley has
been poorly lately and as he fulfilled such a
vital full-time role in the Club’s structure
his absence has left a big hole. With Allan’s
full support we have appointed Jason to
take over some of his roles and
responsibilities and as the Club grows the
pair of them should be able to work
together in the future.
“Allan receives our full support and the
best wishes of everyone at the Club for a
very speedy recovery and is making good
progress and retains his fantastic sense of
humour.
“Jason was a popular player for Leigh who
was the second youngest player to play for
the Club. He earned Great Britain Under21s honours and then moved on to play at
the highest level for clubs like Leeds and
Bradford and played at Wembley in the
1996 Challenge Cup Final.
“But Leigh has always been in his heart
and he returned to play again at Leigh and
later had a spell as assistant coach to Paul
Terzis.
“In more recent years he has been an
inspirational Chairman of the Players
Association and the success of the
Association is testimony to his drive and
dedication.
“Jason has put his teaching career on hold
40
THE CENT U R I O N
in order to take on this role and we are
grateful to the staff at Westleigh
Methodists Primary School for allowing him
to take on this role so quickly.
“Jason will assist Commercial Executive
Amanda Lee on the commercial side as
well as overseeing many operational roles
and his drive, energy, ambition and love of
the Club make him another great signing.
“I know this appointment will also help
Allan to relax and take his time to recover.
LEIGH CENTURIONS 2015
He is so anxious about the Club I know he
was getting stressed that his good work
wasn’t being continued and that isn’t good
for him at this stage.
“I would also like to thank everyone for
their well wishes for Allan, not just our own
fans and sponsors but RFL officials and
officials of other clubs. Allan is a wellrespected person within the game and he
has drawn comfort from everyone’s support
and good wishes.”

SET OF SIX
NEW SIGNING MATHIAS PALA IS THE NEXT
CENTURIONS PLAYER TO COMPLETE A SET OF SIX
two games as fullback and scoring two
tries in the victory over Wales.
Leigh and I hope to have the support of the
Leythers!
PLAY 1
PLAY 5
How did you first start playing Rugby
League and where?
I start played rugby when I was six-yearsold at Carpentras, my home town (red and
white shirt).
What's the difference between life in
Perpignan and Leigh?
My lifestyle in France was awesome. I could
take my son to the beach every day which
was just ten minutes from my house!, I also
like to take him up the mountains to play in
the snow and ski – which was just 40
minutes away from where I lived. Perhaps I
will take him to Manchester to ski at the
Chill Factor.
PLAY 2
Leigh Centurions’ latest signing,
Mathias Pala made a try-scoring debut
in the Reserves Championship game
against Dewsbury Rams at Leigh East
and was in the 19-man squad for the
Ladbrokes Challenge Cup tie at
Warrington Wolves. Mathias joined his
new team-mates at the Club’s annual
golf day at Houghwood Golf Club and
was interviewed for a feature on the
Club shown on BBC North West
Tonight. He has quickly settled into life
in Leigh and is next up in the Set of
Six.
Born in Carpentras, Mathias came through
the ranks of his home town club and has
also played for Limoux, Balmain Tigers in
Australia and St Esteve. He made his Super
League debut for the Dragons against
Bradford Bulls in 2011 and made 33
appearances for the club, scoring four tries.
Mathias made his international debut for
France against England in 2011 and played
for France against Ireland, Wales and
Scotland in the 2014 European
Championship series, featuring in the final
How did you come to sign for Catalans
and what is it like to play for them?
I was in Australia played for Balmain Tigers
when Catalans rang me, I was 20 years old
and it was a dream as a kid to play for
them. When I arrived over there I made my
debut only two years later when Trent
Robinson was Head Coach.
PLAY 3
You had a spell with Balmain Tigers in
Australia, is that where you learnt your
English?
Yes I wasn’t so good at English in school.
My first month over there in Australia on
my own was very hard for me. But I like
talking and the boys over there were good
with me and after five months my English
was much better!
LAST TACKLE PLAY
What are your ambitions for yourself
and Leigh?
I can’t wait to make my debut for Leigh
and earn my heritage number. At Catalans
my heritage number was 71. If I am the
next player to make my debut I would
receive the heritage number 1399 – I
would be very proud to have this. I really
want to play Super League next season –
with Leigh. I will work hard work in
training and in games to reach this
objective. We already train like a Super
League team and I think we deserve to be
in this comp next year.
PLAY 4
What is it like to represent your
country- you first came to Leigh with
the French team in 2011 didn't you?
Representing my country is such an honour,
when I was a child it was my dream, it’s
always a good atmosphere when I put on
the French jersey and I feel proud. I trained
at Leigh with the French team in 2011 and
was very impressed with the facilities. I
never thought then that I would be training
there every day a few years later. I look
forward to playing England this year at
Mathias’ Heritage number at Catalans
