HUNSLET HAWKS MEDIA PACK
HUNSLET HAWKS MEDIA PACK HUNSLET HAWKS FRAMING THE FUTURE, HUNSLET HAWKS AT THE HEART OF THE SOUTH LEEDS COMMUNITY HUNSLET HAWKS THE HISTORY Established in 1883, Hunslet RLFC (now known as the Hunslet Hawks) have had an eventful existence involving multiple relocations, prestigious cup wins and overcoming adversity on a number of different occasions. Having won tournaments throughout the 20th Century, including winning the Challenge Cup, the club narrowly missed out on a place in the Super League in 1999. 13 years later the club has recently been taken over by the Hunslet Independent Supporter’s Trust, and they are now challenging for promotion from the Co-operative Championship to join the game’s elite in the Super League. The Trust Hunslet Independent Supporters Trust (HIST) was formed in September 2010 by a group of supporters who wanted to work alongside the Hunslet Hawks RL Club to raise its profile in the local community and help generate new avenues of funding. The Club Hunslet Hawks have largely existed for the last 32 years through the financial backing of two Directors, Grahame Liles and Sean Cluderay. However after a long association with the Club both felt that now was the right time to retire. Unfortunately despite all efforts no buyer could be found and so the offer came for the Club to be gifted to the Trust. Joint Operation HIST arranged for appropriate due diligence and also ran the Club as a joint operation alongside the current owners from August 2011 through to Jan 31st 2012. That allowed an exchange of knowledge and skills to ensure that the Club maintained and delivered its key responsibilities. Flying Solo HIST have been in total control of the day to day running of the Club since 01 February. The aim is that the Shareholdings of Grahame and Sean will be formally handed over to the Trust at the end of the 2012 season. This will give HIST 56% shareholding. Additionally pledges have also been made by the two other largest shareholders and once these are received HIST will have over 75% shareholding. A New Dawn These are exciting times for the Club and the new Board who are in no doubt as to the challenge they face in making the Club a financially viable and stable operation. There is a new vision which will see the Club at the Heart of the Community in South Leeds. There is also a new direction which will see Hunslet run far more effectively as a business to generate it’s own income in order to survive and thrive. Working Relationships Hunslet has already forged strong working partnerships with its two key stakeholders the RFL and LCC which will benefit the Club going forward. Additionally new partnerships and sponsorships are being forged that will provide both key support & income stream to the business, including a new partnership with Leeds Rhinos which will see both clubs share best practice on media, marketing and commercial activities as well as player exchange on dual registration loan deals. Club Patron We are also extremely proud & privileged to announce Hilary Benn as our Club Patron. To have such a highly respected MP as Hilary Benn committing to our cause gives the whole Club a huge lift. It’s also a big statement of intent on our part that we will endeavour to involve and work with the right people who can help us meet our vision in making the Club a sustainable, viable and vibrant centre for the Community of South Leeds” Opportunities We think our vision offers real opportunities for local Businesses to work with us on a mutually beneficial basis as the Club and the Community of South Leeds come together.
