Albany Creek Cricket Club – History
Our Beginnings
Back in the late 1970's Ken Lister wanted his son Greg to play cricket. The closest
club was Pine Rivers Cricket Club at Dakabin and it was difficult to get his son to
practice. He decided to recruit local boys and make up teams from Albany Creek. At
the time there were 3 teams at Pine Rivers made up entirely of Albany Creek boys.
Ken Lister, Geoff Sweet and Bruce Patching started the new Albany Creek Junior
Cricket Club and signed up 4 teams and joined the Redcliffe & Districts Junior Cricket
Association (Zone 6).
Although training was in Albany Creek, they still had to travel far and wide to play
their matches, as there was no quality home ground. Clubs in the District were
located at Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Margate, Bribie Island, Caboolture, Burpengary
and Kilcoy. Each player was charged a match fee. This enabled Albany Creek to
provide gear for the players and it wasn't long before we had a reputation as the Club
with the best equipment for its players - no clubhouse or headquarters, but each team
had a well-stocked kit. This ‘policy’ has been continued until the present. Luckily, we
now have a number of good pitches as well as our own clubhouse - the ‘Hawks Nest’
at Brendale.
Peter Daff was one of our first selectors at Zone level and for 3-4 years helped in the
selection and development of Under 12 players trailing for the Zone 6 Teams. Up until
Brisbane North combined Zones 1 & 2, there were two Brisbane competitions played
over a number of Sundays - Presidents Cup (Zone A teams) & Presidents Plate
(Zone B teams). Players were then selected from Zones 1 (Sandgate/Toombul), 2
(Valleys/Norths) and 6 (Redcliffe Districts) to form the Brisbane North Championship
& Development teams.
And Now
So that was how we started. Let’s take a quick look at where we have now, some 20
years later.

At the SPSA complex, we have the use of two synthetic pitches for senior cricket,
South Pine 1 and South Pine 2 (the hockey field) and four pitches on the AFL oval for
the U8s and U9s (A, B and C respectively). We also utilise Sargent Reserve at
Eatons Hill and the extremely picturesque ground at Wantima as two of our regular
fields, along with many of the local school grounds.

We not only have our main clubhouse (D) but we now have a second ‘Hawks Nest’ on
South Pine 1 (E). In 2008/2009, the club purchased the old club house from the Dog
Club and the warehouse boys took on the project of renovating and restoring it to
what you see today. They have done a great job. The second ‘Hawks Nest’ is
discussed in more detail in the Warehouse section of this document.

We have two sets of training nets (F and G) and have just been awarded a
$34,000.00 grant to upgrade the lighting on the second set of nets (G) on the hockey
field). Well done to Gary Logan who put an enormous amount of effort into our grant
application and persisted through some very dodgy red tape to achieve this fantastic
outcome! The hockey field nets were recently upgraded with new netting and
synthetic turf. Both sets of nets are in constant use during the week for training.

The car park area at the front of the grounds (H) has been finished and this makes a
big improvement on the dust bowl that hoons used to do donuts on in the middle of
the night. The final section is still to come. Perhaps we’ll be able to talk about it for our
30 year celebrations, along with the acquisition of more grounds for our ever
increasing numbers.
Several shade shelters have been erected beside Southpine 1 and in between
Southpine 2 and the AFL oval. Also, the club has invested in a number of large shade
shelters that are also made available to the teams on a Saturday morning and for
special events like our Cap Days and Trophy Days.
Page 54
Page 3
So what makes Albany Creek such a strong and successful club? One reason is our
dedicated and hard-working committee, who all work tirelessly behind the scenes to
ensure that all the teams have a great season and that the club runs smoothly.
Anyone who has come along to our Cap Days or Trophy Presentation Days would no
doubt be aware of how well managed the events are. They usually go off without too
many hitches or delays – like clockwork really – especially now that we’ve got the
microphone system fixed (thanks Paul). It may appear effortless – but a lot of hours
have gone into the preparation and planning for these events – and on the day we
always have a large contingent of volunteers rolling up their sleeves to get the work
done. A BIG thanks to all committee members, past and present, for making the club
the well-oiled machine it is today!

As a community club, we are all ‘the club’ and we encourage our parents to get
involved, either by coaching or managing a team; or by being there on Saturday
morning to help with the smooth running of the game. The strong parent support we
enjoy here is the envy of many other cricket clubs out there.
Albany Creek is proud to host the U-12 Development Carnival (Ian Healy Cup) for
BNJCA in January of each year.

A drop in player numbers across the region saw our numbers drop to 284
registered players (33 half season players).
We managed to field 24 teams in the Brisbane North competition. We fielded
our first half season team this year in the U13 division and recognised the
growing number of half season players by awarding the Season Cricketer of
the Year trophy for the first time. This was awarded to Brandon Herring of
the U13 Sea Hawks.
11 Albany Creek players represented Brisbane North in the carnivals this
season.
Life Membership was awarded to Mr Canteen John Moushall in April 2005.
One team (B2N) in the Summer again and 4 teams in the 2005 Winter
competition: B1N, B3N, C2N and U16.
Luke Swinbourne captained his C2N team to take out the 2005 Winter
competition premiership for their grade – our first Warehouse premiership!

The well publicised Ashes tour in England has been recognised as creating
a renewed interest by young players in cricket. Our numbers rose to a record
345 registered players of which 84 were half season players.
We fielded 26 teams (one of which was a half-season again) in the Brisbane
North competition. This equals our record number of teams (26 also in
2003/2004).
We had 14 Albany Creek players representing Brisbane North in
Championship and Development carnivals across the Christmas holidays.
This equals our record number of representative players (14 also in
2003/2004).
This season we saw another player selected at a state level Tynan Burgess
played in the U13 Qld State Primary School Championships. He is only the
second Albany Creek player to be selected at this level. Another name to
watch out for in the future!
In August of 2005, we had the U17 Colts side from Plymouth visit. Again,
Albany Creek took out the coveted Endeavour Cup.
Life Membership was awarded posthumously to Tim Kaddatz whose tragic
death rocked the core of the club. Tim was a coach at Albany Creek for
seven years and worked with a number of teams in all grades from Under 8
to Under 15, many of which three of his four boys played in.
Life Memberships were also awarded to Steve and Kathy Casey in June
2006. The first female Life Member so let's hope we get more females
getting involved in the running of the club in the future.
Still just one team in the Summer Warehouse comp (B2N) but 5 in the 2006
Winter comp: B1N, B2N, C1N, C2N and U16.
We took out two premierships in the 2006 Winter Comp: C2N captained by
Darren Green and U16s captained by Michael Strange.
Page 11
The Endeavour Cup teams – held on August 13 at Brendale between the visiting U17
Colts side from Plymouth and our U16 Winter Warehouse team. It went down to the
wire but the good guys (Albany Creek) ended up winning the match by 25 runs or so.

We made an offer to buy the old club house from the dog groups PADS and
got it moved across the road to Field 1. The Warehouse boys took on the
task of turning the Dog House into a home-away-from-home and through a
lot of hard work have succeeded. It's a great addition to our sporting
complex.

At the end of the day, players return from fields near and far, to discuss their day and
have a laugh.
2008/2009 also saw the introduction of the great ‘Pie Award’ courtesy of Keith Boehm
of Diggers Pies (who is also a regular in player in one of our teams). Players get points
for runs, catches, wickets etc and the person with the highest score for the round wins
a family pie from Diggers. So if you hear anyone saying they’re a good chance of
getting the pie – now you’ll know what they mean!
Since entering of first team in the Warehouse Competition in 1999, we have grown
from one winter team and one summer team, to the biggest club in the winter
competition, with 9 senior teams and an impressive 6 junior teams.
We’ve quite a lot of our juniors going on to play grade cricket these days but we’ve also
got a lot continuing on in our summer warehouse teams. In the 2009/2010 summer
season, we fielded 4 senior teams spread across all the divisions. So for those boys
who are passionate about the game but don’t want to play grade, cricket doesn’t need
to finish at 15 years of age anymore.
Garry Walker works tirelessly for our Warehouse teams. He and his two dogs have
become an Albany Creek icon and are seen touring all the grounds on Saturday and
Sunday afternoons. Without him, our Warehouse division would not be what it is today.
In fact, in June of 2008, Garry was awarded a well deserved Life Membership with the
club.
Warehouse has grown so much, there is now a sub-committee to micro-manage the
running of the teams. Mike Whitney has taken on the role of Junior Warehouse CoOrdinator and he also does a fabulous job.

Warehouse Cricket
This following appeared in the history compiled by Lorix J. Bertling for the 10 Year
Anniversary of incorporation (24th October 2000) celebrated at the Wantima Gold Club
and attended by around 100 past and present members.
Senior Grades – Under 11 to Under 16
Position
Where do our older players go to continue playing cricket once their junior days are
over? Only a very few have gone on to play Grade Cricket and it has always been
tough getting into the Grade Clubs. Some of our players have joined Warehouse Clubs
but this usually involved joining a team outside our district.
st
Graeme Swinbourne was instrumental in getting the 1 Warehouse team together in the
winter of 1999. The side composed a number of our Under 16 players leaving the
Junior Club and some more senior players (although not necessarily in ability). The side
was entered in the C2 North grade. Again in 2000 Graeme got a team together and it is
hoped that Albany Creek will have Winter & Summer Warehouse teams in the future
with our Under 16 players continuing their cricket careers with Albany Creek.
The spirit of the Warehouse side has been great with father and son combinations,
coaches, managers, senior and junior players all enjoying competitive cricket in the
winter sun. Even those not playing have enjoyed following the team and we are one of
the few teams with scorers - Gary Walker, Warren Wood & Grenville Hughes to name a
few.
After most games the ‘team esky’ is opened and over a cool drink the cricket stories
emerge. Weather permitting a team BBQ is arranged after a home match and the end
of year break-up is a presentation night for the whole family.
Most of the above still holds true. The ‘team esky’ still makes a regular appearance but
now the barbeques are generally after most of the games and they happen in the 5-Star
comfort of ‘The Hawks Nest’.

** Rule Change 2001/2002 – Sundries added to batsman’s total in U9 & U10 age groups.
*** Rule Change 2005/2006 – U10 age group only – for whole season – a batsman continues
batting until their ball allocation has completed regardless of whether they have one out or not.
Previously, this applied to the first half of the season only. For the second half, a batsman’s innings
finished when out.
