Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman
Catholic People with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the transformation of ourselves and our world
according to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ.
Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private
prayer, sacraments and liturgy, through life-long learning and
teaching of Gospel values, and through love and support of each
other.
Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action
through ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and
witness, because all people are called to one and the same goal:
unity with God, now and forever.
Amen.

Sunday Reflection
TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
Can you imagine a world such as the one put
before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and
encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a
world with no tears, no death and mourning, no
crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,”
we hear the Son of God say in the second reading
from the book of Revelation (21:5).
Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary?
Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed
only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us
as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to
this vision of a true Christian community in our
lives today?
Weekday Mass
Responsorial Psalm
Monday, April 25th
For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
Tuesday, April 26th
Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious
splendor of your kingdom.
Wednesday, April 27th
Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
Thursday, April 28th
Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Friday, April 29th
I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Lord.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The French Revolution swept the church in France
away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every
possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering
churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan
raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went
underground and hung on for the ride, even the sevenday week was demolished along with the names of the
months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore
marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere.
The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens.
In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to
the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about
the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of
children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off
to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the
nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today
celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of
those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that
they will later present their children for baptism.

PRAYER FOR THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY
December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful
like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever

saved.

Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured paradise to
the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words
that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God.”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the
God who manifests His power above all by forgiveness
and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness in order that they may feel compassion for
those in ignorance and error: let everyone who
approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven
by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its
anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of
grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed
enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim
liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight
to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the
Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

The Name of God is Mercy by
Pope Francis
Pope Francis invites everyone
to an intimate and personal
dialogue on the subject closest
to his heart—mercy—which has

Andrea Tornielli, Francis explains—through memories
from his youth and moving anecdotes from his experiences as a pastor—why “mercy is the first attribute
of God.” Ask for available copy of this book at the

Annual Catholic Home Missions Appeal
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The Church has great needs around the world, and unfortunately our nation is no exception. Many dioceses
here at home face challenges due to priest shortages, remote geography, or due to the fact that their parishes are in impoverished communities. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal answers these needs by providing
grants to these dioceses.
Forty-two percent of all dioceses in the United States receive Catholic Home Missions support for evangelization, catechesis, ministry formation, and other areas of faith development. Your support of this collection will
help your neighbors here in the United States and strengthen the Church at home.
In Your support of this collection will help your neighbors here in the United States and strengthen the Church
at home. In 2015, the bishops’ Subcommittee on Catholic Home Missions provided grant money as nearby
as the Diocese of Belleville in Illinois and the Diocese of Kalamazoo in Michigan, supporting their outreach to
migrant communities and to provide ministry to those who live and work in remote and rural areas. The
Diocese of Jackson in Mississippi has some of the highest numbers of families living in poverty, so grants
from the Catholic Home Missions Appeal make it possible for the Diocese of Jackson to pay for the education
of their 10 seminarians, among other things.
Mission dioceses often struggle with isolation and a lack of educated pastoral and lay leadership. With your
support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal can continue to provide catechesis, lay leadership training, funding for seminarian education, and other essential pastoral outreach in our home mission dioceses.
On the weekend of April 23-24, please be generous in the Catholic Home Missions Appeal and help
strengthen the Church at home. Your support will truly make a difference.
Thank you, and God bless you.
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet

Around the Parish
A Finance Council was established March 14th 2016 here at Church of the Holy Ghost.
Every parish is required by Canon Law to have a Parish Finance Council that is advisory and consultative to the pastor. The Finance Council is to assist the pastor in the administration of the temporal goods of the parish. The Canons
make it clear that the Finance Council does not substitute for the pastor as the chief administrator and legal representative of the parish’s goods. The Council should assist the pastor in keeping the financial administration of the parish in
harmony with the mission of the parish.
The Members are:
Fr John - Pastor
Tom Frawley – Finance Council Chair
Richard Kaffka – Business Manager
Theresa Bero – Bookkeeper/Office Manager
Joe Minard
Lynne Ciaccia
Judy Carter – Finance Council Secretary

Year of Mercy
During the Year of Mercy this page will focus on the Encyclical of St. John Paul II,
called Dives in Misericordia,
Divine Mercy, written in November 1980.
Venerable Brothers and dear sons and daughters, greetings and the apostolic blessing.
VII. THE MERCY OF GOD
IN THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH
13. The Church Professes the Mercy of God
and Proclaims It ( Part 2)
It is precisely because sin exists in the world, which
"God so loved...that he gave his only Son,"115 that
God, who "is love,"116 cannot reveal Himself otherwise than as mercy. This corresponds not only to the
most profound truth of that love which God is, but
also to the whole interior truth of man and of the
world which is man's temporary homeland.
Authentic knowledge of the God of mercy, the God of
tender love, is a constant and inexhaustible source of
conversion, not only as a momentary interior act but
also as a permanent attitude, as a state of mind.
Those who come to know God in this way, who "see"
Him in this way, can live only in a state of being continually converted to Him. They live, therefore, in
statu conversionis; and it is this state of conversion
which marks out the most profound element of the
pilgrimage of every man and woman on earth in
statu viatoris. It is obvious that the Church professes
the mercy of God, revealed in the crucified and risen
Christ, not only by the word of her teaching but
above all through the deepest pulsation of the life of
the whole People of God. By means of this testimony
of life, the Church fulfills the mission proper to the
People of God, the mission which is a sharing in and,
in a sense, a continuation of the messianic mission of
Christ Himself.
The contemporary Church is profoundly conscious
that only on the basis of the mercy of God will she be
able to carry out the tasks that derive from the
teaching of the Second Vatican Council, and, in the
first place, the ecumenical task which aims at uniting
Mercy in itself, as a perfection of the infinite God, is
also infinite. Also infinite therefore and inexhaustible all those who confess Christ. As she makes many efis the Father's readiness to receive the prodigal chil- forts in this direction, the Church confesses with humility that only that love which is more powerful than
dren who return to His home. Infinite are the readiness and power of forgiveness which flow continually the weakness of human divisions can definitively
from the marvelous value of the sacrifice of the Son. bring about that unity which Christ implored from the
Father and which the Spirit never ceases to beseech
No human sin can prevail over this power or even
for us "with sighs too deep for words."119
limit it. On the part of man only a lack of good will
can limit it, a lack of readiness to be converted and to
repent, in other words persistence in obstinacy, opposing grace and truth, especially in the face of the
witness of the cross and resurrection of Christ.
Therefore, the Church professes and proclaims conversion. Conversion to God always consists in discovering His mercy, that is, in discovering that love
which is patient and kind117 as only the Creator and
Father can be; the love to which the "God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ"118 is faithful to the uttermost consequences in the history of His covenant
with man; even to the cross and to the death and
resurrection of the Son. Conversion to God is always
the fruit of the "rediscovery of this Father, who is rich
in mercy.

Dear Parishioners,
Once again I am appealing to you for support of the 26th

enormous difference in your life. Serve the parish, give
back to the community, grow in your faith, and access
our optional top-rated insurance program to protect
your family. Regardless of their schedule or other commitments, 1,900,000 men around the world have found
that the Knights of Columbus adds something significant to their lives.

Please help support of the annual Back to School Fair.
This event is a successful collaboration of over 100 public and private agencies dedicated to improving the
needs of low-income families. It costs over $30,000 to
operate the fair and we need your help to make sure
every child is prepared for school this fall.
DuPage County is the third most affluent county in Illinois which contributes to a widespread misperception
that there is no poverty in DuPage County. In reality,
over 60,000 persons have income below the federal poverty level.
Donations may be mailed to Catholic Charities, Back to
School Fair, 26 W. St. Charles Road, Lombard, IL 60148
or made online at catholiccharitiesjoliet.org.
Thank you!
