GOSPEL COMMENTARY THE FALL OF SATAN When I was lecturing at the university in the late 70s, a student came to talk endlessly into the night over a cup of coffee. Unbeknownst to me, he put a drop of LSD onto a sugar cube in my coffee. Subsequently, I had a ‘dread-full’ night, perceiving evil faces around me. Ordinary, blinkered consciousness gave way to an awareness of other spiritual beings which inhabit our world, but which we normally screen out. No mind-altering drugs for Jesus! He was intensely aware at all times of the spiritual forces holding human beings in various forms of slavery, and, with his Jewish upbringing, he named one of them ‘Satan’ – our translation would be ‘prosecutor’, the ‘accuser’. Satan was the figure who constantly paraded human beings before God and asked God to justly punish them. Never appealing to God’s mercy, Satan always pleaded for the strictest retribution – an iron law of punishment consequent on wrongful decisions. Homily by Fr Michael Tate disease. Satan, the Accuser, was doubly defeated in this healing ministry conducted by the 72 disciples in Jesus’ name. We are Jesus’ disciples to our contemporaries. Perhaps our special mission is to help people deal with accusations, even just accusations, where the demand is made that ‘the punishment fit the crime’, with no tempering of sentence. How often do we see a person squirm with no offer of a way out, no hint of mercy or forgiveness, or even just of a way to save face so that he or she can draw breath, undo some of the damage done, and get back on track to a better life. Every time we temper the unmitigated punishment of some wrong-doing, Satan is defeated. Every time we do those things, Our Lord can look at us and say ‘Satan is displaced’. What is left in Heaven? Rather, Who is left in Heaven? Not Satan but the Paraclete, the Holy Today’s Gospel is very unusual because it portrays Spirit as our advocate. Jesus as having a vision – a special insight into his And so, we do not fear our names being listed by heavenly Father’s plan for our salvation which Satan on an indictment in the law court of then got pictured in Jesus’ human imagination: ‘I Heaven. Rather, we trust our Lord and hope to saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven.’ see our names written in the book of those who Jesus saw that Satan had come toppling down are saved. In the words of today’s gospel: from his role as the accuser/prosecutor. Heaven ‘Rejoice, for your names are written in Heaven.’ was now a place where God’s mercy was assuredly given free rein. The reign of God means that mercy falls on us ‘as the gentle rain from heaven.’ And what triggered the vision? Not some drug-induced state, but the reports from the disciples he had sent out that they were conquering evil forces in His name. Yes, they cured those who were diseased. But, they also rejected the common accusation against the blind, epileptics and so on that they or their parents were sinners and that that explained the Readings for THIS Week: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Isaiah 66:10-14 Psalm: Ps 65:1-7. 16. 20 Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. 2nd Reading: Galatians 6:14-18 Gosp Acclam: May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, and the fullness of his message live within you. I am taking leave from the second week of December and will start a Sabbatical of study in Rome from mid January 2017, returning in mid July. I am very grateful for the opportunity to do this. An Administrator will be appointed for that time and I will let you know his name when the decision has been made. I am confident that I will leave you in good hands. I have been told that St Anne’s will continue to be Administered from Enfield for the foreseeable future: probably until the Parish 2020 working group has finished their report. Carm, Born Anno Brandsma, he completed high school studies with the Franciscans before entering the Carmelite monastery in Boxmeer in September of 1898, where he adopted his father's name, Titus, as his religious name. During the early years as a Carmelite he showed interest in journalism and writing, two activities which would occupy much of his time later on in life. Titus professed his first vows as a Carmelite in October, 1899, was ordained on June 17, 1905, and after further studies at the Roman Gregorian University, graduated on October 25, 1909 with a doctorate in philosophy. Fr. Titus' entire priestly life was spent in education, although always with a keen pastoral sense of people's needs. He joined the faculty of the newly founded Catholic University of Nijmegen in 1923, and served as Rector Magnificus, or President, of the University in 1932-33. 1932 After this time he resumed his teaching duties, and in 1935 made a lecture tour of the Carmelite foundations in the United States. Just before this lecture tour, Archbishop De Jong of Utrecht appointed Fr. Titus as spiritual advisor to the staff members of the more than thirty Catholic newspapers in Holland; around the same time, the policies of Adolf Hitler, the new German Chancellor, began to be felt in Holland, and were openly criticized by Titus in his teaching and in the press. With the Nazi occupation of Holland on May 10, 1940 began the open persecution of the Jews and the active resistance of the Catholic hierarchy, who announced on January 26, 1941 that the sacraments were to be refused to Catholics known to be supporters of the NationalNational Socialist movement. While Titus' involvement with this Catholic resistance to Nazi activity was becoming more blatant, it was the Church's refusal to print Nazi propaganda in their newspapers that sealed his fate. Titus decided to deliver personally to each Catholic editor a letter from the bishops ordering them not to comply with a new law requiring them to print official Nazi publications. He visited fourteen editors before being arrested on January 19, 1942 at the Boxmeer monastery. Fr. Titus was interned at Scheveningen and Amersfoort in Holland before being sent to Dachau, where he arrived on June 19, 1942. His constitution quickly deteriorated under the harsh regime, forcing him to enter the camp hospital in the third week of July. There he became the subject of biological experimentation, before being killed by lethal injection on July 26, 1942. 11 St Anne's Square Strathfield South NSW 2136 TEL: 9642 1523 St Joseph’s office 9747 4884 FAX: 9747 8086 Email: [email protected] Administrator: Fr.
