Before I met Flo Fuhr, I'd have said, "Nothing." Flo and her Conga riders rolled into Denver on Saturnday, June 30, 2011 to promote Conga for a Cause. This group loves to ride their scooters and they love to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. Still, how did it become a Conga? By accident actually. At age 46 Flo finally realized a dream and learned to ride her own motorcyle. Her husband promised that if she took a motorcyle safety course and obtained her license, then he would buy her a motorcycle. She did and he kept her promise. Flo began an online blog for women motorcycle riders. Through the blog she met Donna Palladino and her husband Jerry "Motorman" Palladino . the Palladino's founded Ride Like a Pro. Through the Photo by “Tony Clapp Palladino's Flo realized her dream of owning a Harley - the Road Queen. Flo bought the bike from Donna a.k.a Doc - site unseen. One problem - the Palladino's and the motorcyle were in Hudson, FL and Flo lives on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Doc convinced Flo to ride her new bike from Florida to British Columbia. Flo's family was very concerned - her nick name is Wrong Way Flo. The Women Who Ride were not going to let Flo go it alone. She was accompanied by various women and men who joined her during the ride. She made it all the way 6,000 miles and thus Conga 1 was accomplished. Her adventure attracted quite a bit of attention and Flo turned that toward a fund raiser for breast cancer research. Cancer had take the life of her younger sister and it seemed only natural that she would have a reunion the following year. Her husband wanted a motorcycle from the Palladinos and Flo was only obliged to ride it from Hudson, Florida back to Vancouver Island. Conga 2 raised $4,000 and was a success on many levels. Flo became a certified Ride Like a Pro instructor. She and Doc and the other riders began to dress all in pink and adorn their bikes with pink feather boas and pink pool noodles that were bent in the shape of the breast cancer ribbon and wrapped around the headlights of their bikes. They rode hard and passionately raised money and awareness for the fight against the deadly disease. Every where they went, survivors and those whose lives had been affected by cancer shared stories. Those stories pushed and encouraged the riders to battle heat, cold, wind, rain and snow. The effort also caused tremendous growth in the Women Who Ride movement. The blog had more than 20,000 followers. Conga 3 would involve different conga lines from different parts of the United States and Canada meeting in the middle. They chose Wyoming for their conclave. 6 AUGUST 2011 Conga 3 involved the debut of Judy "Fancy Pants" Snaith, 64, and Flo's brother Eric, 48. Snaith is a breast cancer survivor and finally bought a motorcycle after she had beat the disease into remission. Riders were also leaving from North Carolina and Texas. In the days before the event, the crew had raised $14,000 . As the riders rolled toward Cheyenne, they created quite a Photo by “Tony Clapp stir. Men with pink hair, people getting their heads shaved, ponies being auctioned. There was no limit or shame in their efforts to raise money. Would like a picture with the crew? It's going to cost you a donation. Want to know what is going on, it is going to cost you. At the end of the ride, the total was in excessive of $30,000. During a run through Colorado, the crew traveled summit of Mt. Evans, elevation 14, 250. It was also decided that Conga 4 would roll through Colorado again. On July 23, Conga 4 rolled into Susie's in Golden, Colorado. A hot summer day greeted the crew. I met Flo and the gang and their infectious kindness was overwhelming. Our destination for the day was Garden of the Gods. Debi Holmes sent Flo a message on Facebook and promised that if she would stop in Colorado, that Debi would organize a fundraising event. Debi and the gang did not disappoint. A silent action and party at Susie's sent Flo and gang home with $400. We had an amazing day of riding and story sharing. One thing that is certain is that these people love to ride. I asked Flo what was the hardest part of her journey and she said that it was always so difficult to say goodbye to the wonderful people that she meets. It is never hard to get going. Her motivation is the desire to have a positive impact on people and seeing her efforts move people in a positive way. Flo is destined to return to Canada on August 6, but her fundraising efforts will continue as she plans for Conga 5. To learn more about the Flo and her adventures, follow her at www.gowiththeflo.org. There is also a place to donate. As Flo and the crew roll through Colorado next year, join in and help them kick cancer to the curb as they conga their way across country. 5320 Wadsworth - South of Lowes Anthony’s Pizza Anthony’s Pizza 5320 Wadsworth - Arvada, just received their liquor license to sell beer and to celebrate, they are offering a 12oz. Mark Littlejohn Christmas In July Plenty of Bike Parking We Accept Visa • MasterCard • Discover The Balloon Inn — Karaoke — Every Friday The 8th annual Mark LittleJohn Christmas in July was a success despite being the smallest attended event in its history with just 75 bikes. The Salvation Army, Support A Soldier, and A Caretakers Wish all benefited from this year's run. Mark, a good size guy with a huge heart, became interested in helping charities while working at a former employer, who made an annual donation to the Salvation Army. With this, the seed was planted and a lot of hard work later, Mark planned the first run eight years ago, benefiting the Lambuth Family Center. The event continued to grow and Mark was able to reach out to several other worthy causes. Mark is already working on next year's event. If he gets his way, instead of a one day poker run, it might just turn into a weekend festival. Here are a few highlights inside the Royal Gorge Park: By Diana Rowe Photos © Diana Rowe Canon City is home to one of the world's highest suspension bridges, the Royal Gorge Bridge. It hangs 956 feet high and spanning a quarter mile across the Royal Gorge Canyon, and bikers can find their thrill while riding across this amazing bridge. The Royal Gorge canyon below is one of the most awe-inspiring sights you'll ever see, and for adrenalin seeker bikers, you can also experience the Royal Gorge while flying high in the world's scariest ride, the Royal Rush Skycoaster®. For some bikers, scooting across the Royal Gorge Bridge, suspended above the rushing waters of the Arkansas River and 1,000 foot granite cliffs, is enough to get their adrenaline racing. But for others, it's the need for speed and height that pushes them across the Royal Gorge Bridge and dare to ride the Royal Rush SkyCoaster. That's me -- always looking for that next great adrenaline rush! When you park your bike, pay your $25, you'll have time to think about the view of the Royal Gorge Bridge -- 1,270 feet long, 18 feet wide, towering 150 feet high. When you step up onto the platform, to be hooked up to the contraption, gulp, you see just how far of a plunge 1,300 feet actually is to the bottom where the Arkansas River's white water rapids dare even the most experienced rafters. My friend Bonnie was already regretting her decision to be my partner as we were harnessed to the contraption that slowly pulls us up, up, up the tower - was it 10 stories or more? Worse, we're in charge of our destiny as Bonnie releases the pull cord that drops us for 2-3 seconds before we reach speeds of up 50 mph (Video to be posted soon!). My heart raced as we swung over the Royal Gorge, suspended above the magnificent Arkansas River and the granite cliffs! It was one of the most amazing adventures I've experienced, and yes, I'd do it again, although my friend isn't as willing for a repeat! You don't have to be a thrill-seeker to find your adventure at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. It's a 360-acre destination that merges Mother Nature with adventure, and unlike any destination you'll ever experience. 12 AUGUST 2011 • Gawk at the Royal Gorge Bridge and the spectacular views of the Royal Gorge Canyon. • Walk or scoot across the world's highest suspension bridge. Photo opportunity on the bridge in front of your state flag. • Ride the Aerial Tram 2,200 feet across the Arkansas River, located 1,178 feet below. • Sit back and enjoy the Magic show of Christian Augustine • Be a kid again and ride the antique replica Carousel. • Ride the Incline Railway, one of the world's steepest incline railways • Visit the Wapiti Western Wildlife Park, 10-acre park home to native Colorado animals, including Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, American Bison, and Rocky Mountain Elk. • Trail rides into Royal Gorge County with Watt Mule Company Trail Rides. • Get high at the *NEW* Royal Gorge Zipline Tours or the soaring Royal Rush Skycoaster! www.royalgorgeziplinetours.com/ You can spend an entire day at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, but make sure you leave time to ride the Skyline Drive, a one-way road, not for the faint of heart. The Skyline Drive entrance is about 3 miles west of Canon City on U.S. Highway 50. The 3-mile drive, constructed by inmates from the state prison in the early 20th century, takes you hundreds of feet up a ridge overlooking Canon City and the Arkansas River Valley, and it will take your breath away - literally! No guard rails, so keep your eyes on the narrow road and heed the 15 mph speed limit. The ridge is a geological marvel with"hogback" formations directly below. There are even dinosaur tracks embedded in the rock at one of the several pull-offs. Skyline Drive ends at the intersection of Floral and Fifth in residential Canon City. You can get back to Highway 50 by taking a right on Fifth St and following it a little less than a mile to downtown Canon City and the highway (also called Royal Gorge Blvd.). Add a ride aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad! A throwback to the classic days of train service, your journey aboard Colorado's Royal Gorge Route Railroad includes spectacular scenery and gourmet dining. Your 2 to 3-hour, 24-mile round trip train ride combines scenery and history with a culinary celebration. MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM Failure to Negotiate a Curve Riding season is in full swing and one of the most common accidents is the failure of the rider to negotiate a curve in the road. Here is what I have witnessed, both riding and as the accident investigator. A single rider or a group is cruising down the road at a leisurely pace on a winding two lane road, could be here in Colorado or the Black Hills of South Dakota. As the rider enters the curve, he notices there is a slight decreasing radius to the curve (the curve is getting tighter as you go through it). The rider started his typical lean as he entered the curve, which is slightly more than what the bike By “Bubba” would lean when it was resting on the kickstand. In other words, it is nowhere near its maximum lean limit. Now here is where the problem starts…. When the rider realized the turn was becoming sharper, the rider panics, lets off the throttle, stands up the bike. The rider then looks at the edge of the road and drives the Twin LighT Performance WE PROVIDE SERVICE • PARTS & TIRES FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON bike right off the road and into the ditch, fence or tree. The question is why would an experienced rider stand the bike up and ride right off the road? There are several reasons for the crash. First, the rider failed to learn the bike's lean limits. Second, the rider failed to plan for the curve and did not look to the end of the turn. By not focusing far enough ahead, the decreasing radius comes into view very quickly. The rider then failed to apply proper technique, not adding more input to the handle bars. The rider then fixated on the opposite side of the road, your hands follow your eyes. You focus on it, that's were your bike goes. What can you do to prevent this from happening to you? Practice Find your bike's lean limits in a safe and controlled environment. (Yes your bike will lean much farther than you think) Start out in an empty parking lot. Practice turning, by making tighter circles in a parking lot until you get comfortable leaning your bike. Remember, use your head and eyes, "LOOK where you want to go, not where you are at". Once you are comfortable going in both directions, practice making wider turns in both directions at speeds above 15mph. Keep your head and eyes UP and look well ahead of the bike. When you reach speeds above 15mph, you're counter-steering. Push left to go left, push right to go right. In other words, if you need to turn sharper in a left turn, push harder on the left grip. It's the same to the right. When riding the hills, or on unfamiliar roads, slow down, look for the end of the turn and beyond. Your braking should be done before you enter the curve then release the brakes and roll on the throttle. This will cause the bike to rise up on its suspension and give it more lean angle before any hard parts hit the asphalt. Invest a few minutes to practice the proper techniques. Your best ideas may be ahead of the crowd vision. Do your own research and be willing to work alone to develop opportunities. Watch your temper to avoid accidents in the first two accidentprone weeks of August. extras now and you know precisely what you want. Go for it-but spend current income, not credit. Remodeling at home may have to wait, but the bike can get new tires or minor repairs to make summer rides safer. Work stretches you, stresses you now, but the payoff could be huge. Relax on the bike after the workday ends. TAURUS: Spend, spend, spend. You'll get money under control again by late August, but you do love your personal luxuries now. Especially the physical comforts. In your love life, though, communication is everything now, and riding together keeps you in sync, too. Remember, you can't work all the time. LEO: You're in your summer prime, full of energy and looking good. You may have to do extra work to cover for co-workers on vacation, but your career future is good enough to be worth the extra time. After hours, get off the phone and onto the bike to do something new and arouse your curiosity. GEMINI: Your sharp tongue may get you in trouble before the 6th, and it's possible a romantic relationship will wither away. Relax, though, you've also got great conversational skills this month, and you can always join a group for a ride to new and interesting places and find yourself a new clan. CANCER: You've got money for MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM VIRGO: You're strangle indolent, but you only feel broke because you want such extravagant toys right now. Focus on your extended family ties or just enjoy your own home and solitary time. Ride over to the closest campus and explore options for going back to school. LIBRA: Are you feeling down? Feel as if everyone's got more excitement in their lives than you? It's time to quite being so diplomatic and let your own feelings power you as you explore new riding groups, new places to go and even new investments. Back your own ideas now. SCORPIO: Casual romance is deceptive now, but making or deepening a commitment to a partner for life brings real joy. Indulge yourself with movies, music and fine wine, and consider buying yourself a more powerful bike. Collect ideas for job improvement now, to use later. SAGITTARIUS: It's a stretch. You've got vision, but the money hasn't appeared yet. The money comes through your job, possibly with promotion or overtime. In the meantime, get out of your rut, gather a few old friends and go somewhere new to lead your imagination down new paths. CAPRICORN: You're feeling powerful-and you may also trigger jealousy and anger from partners or your customers unless you focus that power on service and reliability. Save the wilder ideas for your home life now. Romantically, this is your year. MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT Moonlight rides are just what you need. AQUARIUS: So much to do, so many summer rides, so many new friends-do remember to keep an eye on your health routines and your budget while you're being a butterfly. Daily study, even a few minutes a day, on a creative project or updating your professional specialty pays off handsomely next year. PISCES: Is the wine going to your head? Or just the good company you're keeping? You're golden at work, and exploring your own new ideas would be a good investment of your time and money. Be beware of underestimating your own value now or the value of property you own. It's a great month for riding out with new people, taking a long trip on your bike.
