Norwegian seafood in India
Conquer the large Indian seafood market
India has the world’s second largest population. Out of the
1.3 billion market, 300 million consists of the Indian middle
class. Conservatively estimating, therefore we believe that
the market for Norwegian seafood will exceed 35 million
consumers with high spending power. For these
consumers, price will not be the decisive factor, but rather
their wish to eat healthy, exclusive and high quality
seafood.
How to succeed in the Indian market?
The emerging production technologies, higher economic
growth, population explosion and shifts in dietary pattern
are the driving force for rapid growth in the demand for
food of animal origin. The consumption of fish in India has
grown faster than that of any other animal product.
Metro and Walmart are now in the process of entering the
Indian market.
The Indian consumer: from mustard fish to Salmon?
Interesting exhibitions and fairs:
Indians have a different taste preference to seafood
compared to Norwegians. However, development of good
recipes will attract the Indian consumer to the fantastic
high quality seafood.
Annually Team Norway (Royal Norwegian Embassy,
Innovation Norway & Norwegian Business Association
(India)) & NSC organize a large Norwegian Seafood dinner
in Mumbai.
Appetite for marine products and fish, both raw and
ready-to-eat, is growing in India at an encouraging 7 per
cent annual growth rate.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of
India (ASSOCHAM) has pegged the industry at 12,500
million USD in the next four years from the present level of
9,777 million USD.

Salmon and Cod
There are opportunities for Norwegian salmon, cod, trout,
whitefish & pelagic species in a rapid growing Indian
market. The seafood products can either be either frozen,
fresh and/or processed.
A partnership with qualified distributor or a processing
company is essential for success.
FDI in single and multibrand retail is now opening up in
India. This will, in the years to come, improve refrigeration
capacity in the supply chain for cold storage products.
The HoReCa market segment is recommended as a good
starting point when entering the market

A new sanitary certificate is now approved
The dispute around sanitary certificates is solved and as of
April 17, 2013, any Norwegian seafood product is welcome
into India.
