THE VIEW FROM HERE
The last few decades certainly have flown by with some incredible
memories, but the best is still ahead! In 2016, Blackberry Farm celebrates
our 40-year anniversary. It’s a humbling milestone. Forty years may be long
enough to have made an impact on the world, yet it’s still young enough to
anticipate the changes and possibilities sure to come. This balance—old and
new, established and exciting, familiar and fresh—has been part of
Blackberry Farm’s character since the beginning.
I think people feel alive when they spend time here. Maybe it’s because our
farm defies easy explanation. No matter what you’re doing when you’re
with us, you enjoy more than events or amenities—you’re immersed in the
youthful, abundant way of life that we often call “the Blackberry state of
mind.” On the cusp of our 40th year and our 16th edition of this almanac,
I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the people, events and traditions that
make our quiet corner of Tennessee feel so vibrant.
It’s not hard to find a reason to visit Blackberry, but one of the best reasons
is to experience the remarkable chefs, vintners, musicians, artists, athletes
and teachers who bring their talent to the farm. Over the years, we’ve
surrounded our tables with some of the most important voices in food, wine
and culture—and in doing so, we continue to develop a distinct voice all our
own. I’m proud of the part we’ve played in contributing to the Southern
renaissance. I’m thankful for the privilege of supporting up-and-coming
chefs and vintners over the last few decades. And I’m most grateful for the
chance to share it all with friends like you.
In honor of our anniversary, we’ve filled our calendar with an extraordinary
group of unforgettable events, featuring guests that include René Redzepi,
Martha Stewart, Alice Waters and Ann Patchett. (Be sure to make your
plans early, because with a year this big, availability won’t last long!) Along
the way, we’re anticipating plenty of 40th anniversary surprises, spontaneous
adventures and late-night toasts with friends new and old—all the joys that
make Blackberry Farm feel as young, inspiring and fulfilling as it always
has. We can’t wait to share it with you in 2016.
Sincerely,
Sam Beall

A perfect way to both savor and support Southern
food and culture, Taste of the South is a beloved
Blackberry tradition for very good reason. The
legendary event draws some of the South’s most
important voices around our tables for three days to
explore our region’s rich history and evolving food
culture. The annual gathering—which benefits the
Southern Foodways Alliance and features the
Fellowship of Southern Farmers, Artisans and
Chefs—includes cooking demonstrations, tastings
and teachings. This year, those gathered around the
table will include Chefs JJ Johnson, Paul Fehribach
and Steven Satterfield, joined by Vintner Rajat Parr
and Mixologist Derek Brown. Our 2016 Scholar in
Residence Dr. Jessica Harris—perhaps the greatest
expert on the food and foodways of the African
Diaspora—was a founding member of the
Southern Foodways Alliance and was inducted into
the James Beard Who’s Who of Food and Beverage
in 2010. Dr. Harris is currently at work developing
a center for connecting culinary cultures in New
Orleans, making her the perfect choice for this event
that celebrates the diverse flavors of the South. Epic
by any standard, these three days will be filled with
tastes and traditions that define the South’s past,
present and future.

A HARVEST OF HERITAGE
FORTY YEARS
FIELD
So much of our history starts and ends in the soil. When I
realized that we’re letting centuries of flavors fade just by
overlooking certain produce varieties, I made it a mission
to preserve the authentic stories of the South—all bound up
in tiny, heirloom seeds. You can see any of these seeds for
yourself (including some that have borne fruit!) right here
in Blackberry’s gardens, any time you’re here.

Nicole Charbonnet’s layered, textural paintings serve as a metaphor for recollection—the superimposed
images act as a ‘visual threshold’ or a mask, inviting the viewer to look through, to look back, to see anew.
Her work appropriates and transforms stereotypical images from popular American culture as a way to
explore our past and present perceptions of each other. As our nation’s cultural identity continues to evolve,
her work—and the questions it raises—feels particularly relevant. Nicole, an award-winning artist with
deep Southern roots in Louisiana and Virginia, will lead a stimulating discussion and gallery viewing. Her
paintings, which have been shown across the country, make a thought-provoking start to this year’s
enlightening Artist in Residence series.

It takes years to reap a mature truffle harvest, so when we
planted our truffle orchard in 2008, we weren’t thinking
about then or even now—we were thinking about the

new passion: truffle dogs, our beloved Lagotto Romagnolos.
These refined Italian dogs have stolen our hearts and those
of our guests, ultimately reminding us that when you plant

We don’t eat strawberries in December here. Why? Well,
strawberries don’t grow in Tennessee Winters. This seasonal

special, more magical. So, those first Summer strawberries?

Farmers and chefs share more than a passion for food, I’ve
realized. We’re willing to embrace risk. I’ve never known
what it’s like to lose a whole crop to bad weather—but I
do know how it feels to plan a whole menu around a new

failure into fertilizer and keep going. What comes next is

A REMARK ABLE JOURNEY
For years, Blackberry has been proud to
partner with Lexus, our collaborator and
sponsor in extraordinary epicurean and
cultural experiences. In addition to providing
our guests with luxurious transportation
and private access to a fleet of sleek, luxury
vehicles during their Blackberry adventure,
Lexus also joins us in bringing some of the
world’s finest talent to Tennessee, from top
chefs to Grammy Award-winning musicians.
Lexus caps each year by sponsoring a special
event that promises an incredible
combination of food, wine and music. We
look forward to seeing you at the farm this
year and sharing Lexus’ unparalleled style
and taste with you.
