THE VIEW FROM HERE The last few decades certainly have flown by with some incredible memories, but the best is still ahead! In 2016, Blackberry Farm celebrates our 40-year anniversary. It’s a humbling milestone. Forty years may be long enough to have made an impact on the world, yet it’s still young enough to anticipate the changes and possibilities sure to come. This balance—old and new, established and exciting, familiar and fresh—has been part of Blackberry Farm’s character since the beginning. I think people feel alive when they spend time here. Maybe it’s because our farm defies easy explanation. No matter what you’re doing when you’re with us, you enjoy more than events or amenities—you’re immersed in the youthful, abundant way of life that we often call “the Blackberry state of mind.” On the cusp of our 40th year and our 16th edition of this almanac, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the people, events and traditions that make our quiet corner of Tennessee feel so vibrant. It’s not hard to find a reason to visit Blackberry, but one of the best reasons is to experience the remarkable chefs, vintners, musicians, artists, athletes and teachers who bring their talent to the farm. Over the years, we’ve surrounded our tables with some of the most important voices in food, wine and culture—and in doing so, we continue to develop a distinct voice all our own. I’m proud of the part we’ve played in contributing to the Southern renaissance. I’m thankful for the privilege of supporting up-and-coming chefs and vintners over the last few decades. And I’m most grateful for the chance to share it all with friends like you. In honor of our anniversary, we’ve filled our calendar with an extraordinary group of unforgettable events, featuring guests that include René Redzepi, Martha Stewart, Alice Waters and Ann Patchett. (Be sure to make your plans early, because with a year this big, availability won’t last long!) Along the way, we’re anticipating plenty of 40th anniversary surprises, spontaneous adventures and late-night toasts with friends new and old—all the joys that make Blackberry Farm feel as young, inspiring and fulfilling as it always has. We can’t wait to share it with you in 2016. Sincerely, Sam Beall Proprietor L AT E W I N T E R L AT E W I N T E R TABLE OF CONTENTS 4 LATE WINTER 18 SPRING 28 SUMMER 40 FALL 54 EARLY WINTER 58 EVENT INDEX L AT E W I N T E R LATE WINTER WHEN DAYLIGHT IS SHORT IN LATE WINTER, WE COME IN FROM OUR ADVENTURES IN THE COLD, ROSY-CHEEKED AND READY TO APPRECIATE SLOW DINNERS AND EVEN SLOWER AFTERNOONS BY THE FIRE. L AT E W I N T E R TA S T E O F T H E S O U T H January 7–10 A perfect way to both savor and support Southern food and culture, Taste of the South is a beloved Blackberry tradition for very good reason. The legendary event draws some of the South’s most important voices around our tables for three days to explore our region’s rich history and evolving food culture. The annual gathering—which benefits the Southern Foodways Alliance and features the Fellowship of Southern Farmers, Artisans and Chefs—includes cooking demonstrations, tastings and teachings. This year, those gathered around the table will include Chefs JJ Johnson, Paul Fehribach and Steven Satterfield, joined by Vintner Rajat Parr and Mixologist Derek Brown. Our 2016 Scholar in Residence Dr. Jessica Harris—perhaps the greatest expert on the food and foodways of the African Diaspora—was a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and was inducted into the James Beard Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in 2010. Dr. Harris is currently at work developing a center for connecting culinary cultures in New Orleans, making her the perfect choice for this event that celebrates the diverse flavors of the South. Epic by any standard, these three days will be filled with tastes and traditions that define the South’s past, present and future. F E AT U R I N G Chef JJ Johnson of Cecil and Minton’s (Harlem, NY), Chef Paul Fehribach of Big Jones (Chicago, IL), Chef Steven Satterfield of Miller Union (Atlanta, GA), Vintner Rajat Parr of Michael Mina Group and Sandhi Wines (Santa Barbara, CA), Mixologist Derek Brown of Southern Efficiency (Washington D.C.), Scholar in Residence Dr. Jessica Harris (New Orleans, LA) and the Fellowship of Southern Farmers, Artisans and Chefs 6 for more information visit blackberryfarm.com L AT E W I N T E R B E YO N D B L AC K B E R RY: SPORTSMAN WEEKEND January 15–17 Pack your bags for some of the finest sporting in the South. The Cassimus family has been to Blackberry Farm over 60 times in the last 15 years, and it is an honor to bring Blackberry to their special place in the South. Considered the finest hunting destination in Alabama, Sawtooth Plantation makes a tranquil, luxurious base camp for this adventurous retreat dedicated to a centuries-old tradition of the hunt. After the hunt, you’ll also have the option to cook and learn hands-on techniques for preparing your dinners from Sam and Josh. When I realized that we’re letting centuries of flavors fade just by overlooking certain produce varieties, I made it a mission to preserve the authentic stories of the South—all bound up in tiny, heirloom seeds. You can see any of these seeds for yourself (including some that have borne fruit!) right here in Blackberry’s gardens, any time you’re here. —JOHN COYKENDALL , MASTER GARDENER ready to discover your blackberry? call 800.557.8451 for reservations. 7 L AT E W I N T E R FOX H U N T F I N A L E FOX H U N T January 22–24, February 19–21 March 11–13 An English classic distinguished by charming traditions, the foxhunt has become a Blackberry favorite. Her work appropriates and transforms stereotypical images from popular American culture as a way to explore our past and present perceptions of each other. As our nation’s cultural identity continues to evolve, her work—and the questions it raises—feels particularly relevant. Nicole, an award-winning artist with deep Southern roots in Louisiana and Virginia, will lead a stimulating discussion and gallery viewing. Her paintings, which have been shown across the country, make a thought-provoking start to this year’s enlightening Artist in Residence series.
