Sweet, sweet
fantasy baby
O
ne day in late June, all the stars and
planets aligned and two friendly pornstars landed in our laps. Ready, open and
willing to be heavily oiled and ordered into
various states of undress, James Huntsman
and Trystan Bull were a dream to work with.
They walked into photographer David
Hawe’s studio, put down their backpacks
and took off their high-tops and every stitch
of clothing. Hot, buff and gifted in the dink
department, the boys stood in front of me
with looks of innocence and trust; it was both
heartbreaking and boner inducing. I quickly
fell for them and their carefree confidence and
gladly adjusted straps in hard-to-reach places
and wiped sweat from brows and other areas.
Then the fantasy ended.
While one of the pornstars is flexible,

in a while there needs to be something
unreal. Untouchable. Unattainable.
Putting slick, rock-hard pornstars on

The bear essentials
of Leather Pride
“I’m looking forward to the fair because I get to see a lot of hot guys
and paw them and get away with it,” says bearware guru Geoffrey
Davis, who created the Shock-Ra Bear brand.
Davis has nearly 10 years’ experience designing costumes and
wardrobes, servicing clients like the Stratford Festival, Mirvish
Productions and Soulpepper Theatre. His sells his bearware —
which includes jockstraps, jewellery and kilts and is geared to bears
and people in the leather community — online, at the Black Eagle,
Northbound Leather and The Point Tent and Trailer Resort. His
merchandise will also be available at the upcoming Toronto Leather
Pride fetish market. “It’s a fantastic opportunity and a community I
definitely support,” he says.
Toronto Leather Pride, operated by the Heart of the Flag
Foundation, kicks off Thursday, Aug 9 with a reception and
registration at Northbound Leather followed by lots of hot events
throughout the weekend. Sunday’s festivities include the fetish
market, a bootblacking service, a beer garden, a barbecue, a wading
pool and the presentation of the 2013 titleholders. — Jeremy Willard

“I’m creating a fantasy world through Ken dolls, which explores
gay relationships, the life of a single gay man, and gay men
looking for sex,” says photographic artist Walter Segers. His No
PDA project featured images of affectionate same-sex couples
digitally overlaid onto public places. It allowed Segers to explore
his insecurities: “I didn’t feel comfortable with displays of affection
with my husband, even walking hand in hand.”
His current project, What I Did on My Summer Vacation,
presents Segers’ 2012 summer — “the last three months, what
I have done, what I wish I had done and my fantasies” — via
vintage 1960s Ken dolls in various poses and locations, including
some tantalizing situations.
The project will be exhibited in the online arts magazine
Wondereur in a series of photo-essays of artists and their work.
Segers’ segment will feature a day in his life, including images of
him with his husband, him working in his studio, and his Ken dolls.

Golden bears
Take a porn break from the internet (just for a few minutes) to
check out a new web series called Where the Bears Are. When
roommates Nelson (Ben Zook), Wood (Joe Dietl) and Reggie
(Rick Copp) find a body in the bathroom after Nelson’s fifth 40thbirthday party, they set out to learn who the murderer is before
he can get them, too. It’s a romp through Los Angeles’s Silver
Lake neighbourhood, with stops at famed LA gay bars The Eagle,
Akbar and Sunset Junction and guest spots by Mario Diaz (as
murderous Eagle owner Ramon Santiago), eye-candy Ian Parks
as “Hot Toddy” (Nelson’s love interest, who may or may not be
the murderer) and Tuc Watkins, of Desperate Housewives fame.
The creators (Zook, Dietl and Copp) bill it as Murder, She Wrote
meets Golden Girls: Nelson is wise Dorothy, Wood is ditzy Rose
and Reggie is slutty Blanche. No word yet on who solves the
crime and becomes the de facto Jessica Fletcher — you’ll just
have to tune in to see. — Fraser Abe

Odysseo
Underoos was a brand of children’s underwear (by Fruit of the Loom)
that debuted in 1978. The package included a matching top and
bottom for either boys or girls.
It was more of a costume than just mere underwear. The different
styles featured logos of popular superheroes, including Wonder
Woman, Shazam, Superman and The Hulk. Favourite pop culture
characters — Daisy Duke, The A-Team, Barbie, Yoda, He-Man and
GoBots — were also introduced.
The commercials were hilarious! Preteen kids in their skivvies
dancing like well-paid Tiny Talent Time contestants and singing
lines like “Underoos are fun to wear . . . Ya! Something super new in
underwear!”
With Underoos you could secretly wear your favourite character
under your clothes to school and feel empowered knowing that
Wonder Woman or Han Solo was with you on your journey through
hell. They should seriously bring back this shit for adults. Can

The Magic
of theatre
“I remember confetti falling until it accumulated around Rod
Stewart like drifts of snow,” says Jordan Tannahill. “We’re
definitely going to have a storm of confetti.” Tannahill has
been teamed with indie-pop darlings The Magic to create
an evening for the SummerWorks Music Series. “It’s a
late-night revue show — fantastic, super-campy, capital-G
glamour based on The Midnight Special. Live rock shows
and concerts capture something I’ve always wanted to
do. It’s not just the size, it’s the level of engagement — not
just cerebral and intellectual like theatre can be. I really like
the surreal, the queer and the camp.” Evan Gordon, half of
the brother team that founded The Magic, agrees: “Glam
rock is one of our influences. My brother Geordie has a bit
of that Freddie Mercury thing going on. In the indie-rock
world, performers aren’t that theatrical. It doesn’t matter if
it’s musically together; it’s more about the feeling and the
rawness. They don’t dress up. We struggle a lot with that —
people expect to go to a party, but our lyrics actually mean
something. But they have to dance.” This show will be a
party — literally. Tannahill says, “It will devolve into an allnight dance party with DJ Craig Dunsmuir, and there will be
neon lights, lycra, giant props and sequins.” And confetti.

think I speak for a lot of gays when I say Caribana
falls on an “away” weekend. It’s nothing personal; the
August long weekend is full of competing queer priorities. In addition to delightful cottaging opportunities,
Montreal’s Divers/Cité lures hundreds of us to the
bustling patios of La Belle Province. A month after
Toronto Pride, others are only just coming down from
a serious case of “sparkle fatigue.”
But some who stay put avoid the mammoth Caribbean fete, feeling there isn’t a place for the queer
community in Caribana. Well, that’s simply not true!
According to the official Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival website, the Caribana
festival began in 1967 and has since become “North America’s largest cultural
event.” The celebration spans three
weeks and is best known for its glitzy
over-the-top parade, which rivals the
sequined, skimpy attire and free-for-all
spectacle that is Pride Toronto. But absent from the Caribana website is any
mention of queer or queer-friendly
goings-on, and an email to the official organizers was
left unanswered. So I did a little digging.
I turned to Toronto’s own DJ Blackcat, who’s
been in the event world, both as DJ extraordinaire
and prolific promoter, at home and in Montreal;
Washington DC; Dallas; New York; and Chicago
since 1992. He’s also credited with being a founder
of Toronto’s Black Pride, a series of parties with
dates running alongside Caribana’s. DJ Blackcat
believes that there is a place for queers in Caribana
and that many visitors are searching for other queer
people and things to do.
Fatima Zain, founder of Coco Becky Couture,
makes many of the iconic feathered and bejewelled
parade costumes. She loves Caribana’s flamboyance
and revelry and knows many queer participants at all
the headline events: “The parade is fab and fun, and
who doesn’t enjoy dancing in the street half naked?”
She, along with a few other Caribana lovers I spoke to,
feels that a lack of specific queer representation doesn’t
equate homophobia.
But DJ Blackcat feels there should be some “official”
queer promotion. “The fact that it’s not connected to the
website yet is not a bad thing, as word of mouth has done a lot
of publicity on its own,” he says. “But I hope that in the coming
years that will change, because there are lots of gays and lesbians
who come into the city who don’t know that it exists.”
He’s hopeful that queer representation will increase over
time but feels strongly that breaking taboo in the Caribbean
community will require strength of numbers. “We are a
part of this community and have much to offer it. Once
we’re ready to address the committee, then things
can change. It is a taboo topic, being gay or lesbian
in West Indian communities, but acceptance will
happen once the outcry from our community
proves our demand.”
Ryan Kerr often enjoys dancing half naked
in the street. Special thanks to Blackcat for
hooking us up with the über-friendly and
cute underwear models!

here are men who love the wilderness: roughing it, braving the
elements and expressing their
inner outdoorsman. Then there
are those of us who enjoy scenery
and fresh air but believe that getting
away should involve luxury and the basic
— preferably five-star — creature comforts.
Bingemans Grand Experiences is a huge
complex just outside Kitchener. There are
extensive campgrounds, year-round trailers,
convention centres, the Big Splash water park,
the FunWorx indoor playground/arcade,
go-carts, golfing, paintball and swimming
pools, all spread over a verdant hillside that
descends to the gently flowing Grand River.
Bingemans also has glamping.
“We call it a gateway to camping,” explains company president Mark Bingeman,
“for a market that wouldn’t necessarily think
of camping. Glamorizing camping is a trend.
No one else was doing it, so we got in on the
ground floor.”
So far Bingemans has only one glamping
unit, but it has been so successful and is so in
demand that four or five more units will be
added next season. “It’s an attention-getter,”
Bingeman admits.
The lone, so far, glamp yurt is a circular
tent that rests on a raised wooden platform
only steps away from the river. It is surprisingly spacious despite containing two
queen-sized beds, a couch, chairs, a fridge
and a variety of Ikea-style end tables. The roof
soars, circus tent–like, to a round skylight
from which dangles a chandelier. Despite
the pouring rain, it is cozy and warm, with
only one tiny leak creating a small, wet stain
where the canvas meets the floor. Huge sideflap windows let the outside in, without the
bugs, and a sea of green foliage surrounds the
structure. The view of the river from the front
door and deck is instantly soothing and feels
intensely rustic and remote.
Bingemans is designed as a family destination, and a little more privacy — the
year-round trailer park is to the rear of the
yurt, and twice people wandered past the big
windows to watch the wildlife from the water’s edge — would have upped the chances of
acting upon the romantic ambiance without
risking exhibitionism. While not offering the
same gay amenities — or nudity — of Riverside, just outside Tweed, or The Point, west of
Port Dover, Bingemans is prominently listed
as gay-friendly by the Grand River Rainbow
Community Centre, and no one batted an eye
at two men wandering together or basking
near-naked side by side on the deck’s Muskoka chairs or by the wave pool.
While sampling the water park — the
slides are terrific fun — my travelling companion/photographer was hesitant to ride

kissed treasure trail that
disappeared into a red Speedo
— stepped in and informed,
“It’s a much faster and fun
ride if you go together.” And he was right.
Gay really is welcome everywhere, even
at theme parks and campgrounds. The staff
members are flawlessly chipper and helpful — from the pizza-counter girls to the
butch pseudo–forest ranger at checkout who
winked and asked how our night was, then
added, “Hope the coyotes didn’t keep you
awake.” The washrooms and showers are
clean, if a little far away from the yurt, and
the only other complaint would be that coffee
wasn’t available until 10am unless one made
it oneself — there is a firepit — or drove to the
nearby Tim Hortons.
Because Bingemans is a family-oriented
complex, the entertainment — a karaoke
night during our stay proved that off-key
versions of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” are
not enhanced by the acoustics of the great
outdoors — stops sharp at 11pm, and quiet
time is enforced. No such kindness in the
morning, when, at 7am, a fundraising walk
for arthritis — sponsored by Tylenol — used
the Bingemans facilities as a starting point.
Motivational music blared — at least Gaga
and Abba in the mix made it more palatably
gay — and there was little choice but to enjoy
the mist rising off the river as the sun rose on
another day of luxury camping.

Who is
JC Leyendecker
D
arlings . . . Joseph Christian Leyendecker was a 20th-century queer
illustrator who was famous for
creating 322 beautiful Saturday
Evening Post covers from 1900 to
1945. He also practically invented
branding in advertising and modern magazine design. The “New Year’s baby”? That
was his creepy invention! How about male
objectification in advertising? Fuck, yeah —
Leyendecker!
Leyendecker frequently painted beautiful
strong males in a loose yet controlled style.
The masculine subjects were usually placed in
locker rooms, clubhouses, dorms, tailor shops
and fancy parties. His dandyish subjects glance
seductively — confidently posed, ready to
break your heart. His paintings have a similar
homoerotic quality to Bruce Weber’s photographs from the 1980s or Tony Duran’s recent
male model and celebrity portraits. Ralph
Lauren’s ad campaigns have been dripping in
Leyendecker-inspired goodness for decades.
His creations came before print photography was all the rage, and his early work
pre-dated matinee-idol worship. This guy
was giving the average straight male something to aspire to while giving homosexual
men images to drool over, to dream about,
to get off on.

by Leyendecker for the Arrow
Shirt Company. The model for the
drawing above was Charles Beach.

Sure, he could paint women stunningly,
full of character and prettiness. His drawings of children? They freak me out a tad.
But really, Leyendecker’s menswear illustrations are his strongest and most exciting
work. When designing for the Arrow Shirt
Company, he was encouraged to insert homoerotic imagery. His illustrated images
(for Arrow) personified “an ideal American
man.” The subjects were always very athletic,
strong featured, well dressed, stylish and
very, very sexy. All his subjects remind me
of Brideshead’s Sebastian Flyte and Charles
Ryder . . . but with the bodies of Thor and
Captain America.
His 1915 illustration “Man in Long Underwear” was done for Cooper Underwear
Company, the precursor to Jockey International. A handsome young man stands alone
taking off his golden robe to reveal a clean,
white, clinging undergarment. Every muscle
of his body can be seen through the thin fabric
(sadly, his man bits weren’t painted in).
The male model used in that ad (pictured
here), and in most of his divine Arrow Shirt
illustrations, was Leyendecker’s life partner,
Charles Beach.
They met when Beach came to Leyendecker’s studio to model in 1903. Leyendecker
was 29, Beach was 17. Fellow illustrator and
friend Norman Rockwell described Beach
as “tall, powerfully built and extraordinarily
handsome — looked like an athlete from the
Ivy League colleges. He spoke with a clipped
British accent and was always beautifully
dressed. His manners were polished and impeccable.”
Beach and Leyendecker were together
for almost 50 years. Beach was Leyendecker’s lover, model, housekeeper and business
manager. He rented the costumes (for the
models he also hired), bought the art supplies, prepared canvas stretchers and paid the
gardeners and servants. Over time it amused
Leyendecker to encourage Beach to feel an
equal partner in the creativity as well. To
keep his hard-working love amused, Beach
arranged and hosted large, glamorous parties
for the reclusive Leyendecker at their New
Rochelle home/studio. They were important
social events with a mix of celebrities, artists
and high-powered movers and shakers.
The 1920s were the most successful
years of Leyendecker’s career; the 1930s,
not so much. During the Great Depression,
Leyendecker became more of a recluse as
commissions became few and far between.
Beach kept outside contact at bay, and they
curtailed their spending habits and eventually let go of all their household staff. They
lived a quiet life together until July 25, 1951,
when Leyendecker died at the age of 75 in
Beach’s arms.
Leyendecker divided the estate equally
between his beloved sister Mary and Beach.
Before his death, Leyendecker instructed
Beach to destroy all his paintings, sketches,
letters, diaries, correspondence and records.
Beach did most of what he was asked, but
he kept most of the original paintings and
sketches, which he eventually sold at a yard
sale. Unbelievably, the studies sold for 50
cents each, and the most expensive painting
sold for $75.
Beach died six months after Leyendecker,
in 1952, but they will live on in the stunning
paintings of a man by the man who loved him.
I know, right? Weepy sad tears.

Tons of drag contests have gone
through the Village. After many
weeks, three finalists battle it out
for the title of Drag Idol at Crews &
Tangos. Twenty-five-year veteran
Ivory Towers , dressed as Rainbow
Brite, gives head to a dildo through
a glory hole before being rewarded
with a jackpot of Skittles, which pour
over her like a slot machine. “I love
Rainbow Brite with a passion because
her look is so crazy,” she says after.
Carlotta pulls out the stops by enlisting the dance skills of a half-naked
leather boy with an ass you could
serve cake off; new-ish-comer Judy
Virago is Ivory’s competition. Judy,
the Kesha of the drag set, digs deep,
pulling out obscure-ish tracks like
Amanda Lepore’s “My Hair Looks
Fierce,” while two messy, unshaven
gender-bender boys in three-foot
Styrofoam wigs do the boppity-bop by
her side. But no one is able to topple
the Tower. Ivory wins. Skittles for
everyone!
It’s raining men @
Tighty Whitey
Tons of tighty-whiteys have gone
through my underwear drawer over
the years. Today I try to score a few
more at the annual Tighty Whitey
Carwash. It escapes from the alley
this year, with all of Church St shut
down between Wellesley and College.
Are the gods hosting a wet gotchie
contest? It rains down like the great
flood for more than an hour. By the
time it lets up, the street is much quieter, but some still take advantage of
patios that have expanded into the
streets. We enjoy wings and beer at
O’Grady’s before hitting the street
and dancing hard in the intersection of Church and Maitland
to the beats of DJ Deko-ze. That
is, until some past-his-prime hustler stumbles up and attempts to
show Donnarama the “snake” in
his pants as she strolls by with a
stuffed toy reptile of her own, on
her way to perform at Woody’s. It’s
that kinda day.
Million Dollar
Quartet
Tons of musicals have come and gone
through our city. The audience at the
Toronto Centre for the Arts for the
opening of Million Dollar Quartet is
older but they still want to rock. Sort
of. The musical about the onetime
coming together of Elvis Presley,
Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and
Carl Perkins is totally not my genre.
The finale, though, is dazzling, with
some to-die-for sequined jackets!
The wrap party at the Hard Rock
Café brings together this crew and the
cast of Beauty and the Beast (another
Dancap production). In attendance
are comedian Jessica Holmes and
performance artist Keith Cole. It’s
also a thank-you party for Aubrey
Dan , who will shut down his company at the end of 2012. Playwright
Sky Gilbert wrote a scathing article
celebrating this fact. “It’s not the end,
it’s a hiatus,” Dan promises. “And I’ve
never heard of Sky Gilbert.”

Tons of boys have gone through

feels great!” Steve Ireson says of
his return to the club scene. “It’s in
my blood, I guess, and I love it.” As
a slide show of old photos plays on a
side wall, Cory Activate bops centre
stage in an amazing illuminated DJ
booth created by Kenny Baird. Activate is back in his element, playing
big-room dance music in a big room
full of gorgeous guys. As Baird’s trademark metallic mannequins, perched
high above the bar, keep watch over
the dancefloor, Sofonda performs
and I scope the scene. All the oldschool players are here, including
Charles Pavia, Shaun Proulx, Gairy
Brown and John Walke. Dancing on
the sketch-floor under the dripping
sweat of go-go guys are men with
wanting looks and drooling lips. I’ve
had this feeling. Tons of times.

en Cohen, a straight former rugby player, has
started the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation to
combat homophobia and bullying. To promote the
organization, Cohen partnered with Bluebuck underwear
to create the Ben Cohen Special Edition line. To promote
the line, he’s bared almost all in a series of fashion shoots.
Daring? It’s not a new experience: Cohen was the
face and bulge of Sloggi underwear in 2002.
The designers behind Bluebuck have
made extra effort to minimize the
company’s carbon footprint, manufacturing the sexy underwear in Austria
and Poland, close to their supply of
high-grade organic Turkish cotton.
The underwear itself is designed to
be streamlined and no-nonsense;
it’s about having fun and adventures
rather than being concerned with the
perfect body image or a false notion of
masculinity.
“I hate that people are being bullied,”
Cohen says. “But you never hear the stories
of gays fighting back. They don’t really
make the news because there isn’t the
sensationalism that bullying stories
have. Ultimately, I want people to be
happy, because no one wins when
you have low self-esteem or selfworth.” A new pair of underwear
won’t necessarily prevent bullying
or solve self-esteem issues, but if they
make you look as good as Cohen does
here, your self-image will get as much
of a boost as your junk. A portion of all
sales goes to the StandUp Foundation; a full
range of underwear and Ben Cohen eye-candy
items are available at the StandUp Foundation’s website:

Australia’s legendary
Kitty Glitter digs her
claws into this year’s
Fashion Cares
fundraiser
Drag decks
on the
W
hat are the perks to DJing in drag?
If you’re Kitty Glitter, it’s all the
tipsy straight guys who want to get
under her, uh, decks. A queen on the scene in
Sydney for 15 years, Glitter made the jump
from drag performance to DJing six years ago
and has since risen to headliner status in her
native Australia, where she throws the annual
Glitter Ball costume party.
This month she’ll bring her uplifting vocal
house jams to Toronto for a two-part fundraiser event for Fashion Cares 25, featuring
Elton John. On Aug 11, she’ll hit the stage at
Woody’s and then spin at fly. (She’s also doing
a warm-up gig at Woody’s on Aug 9.) Ahead of
Kitty Glitter’s TO stint, we fired a few question Down Under to find out more about the
queen beneath the cat suit.
When did you start going to clubs?
I started going to clubs long before I was legally allowed to. There was no way I was waiting
until I was 18 years old! Back in those early
years, dance music was not as mainstream as
it is today. It was called funk back then, and
there were a few clubs in Sydney that I used
to sneak into that played that kind of music
I was so drawn to.
Why did you start doing drag?
I used to watch drag shows and think “I can
do that,” so I entered a big annual talent quest
and ended up winning the grand finale. It
wasn’t so easy to get work with the showgirls
at that time, though. I think any new queen
that comes along with an obvious potential
to succeed is seen as a threat. Even though
there wasn’t much encouragement from
them, it was the energy from the audiences
I performed to that kept my focus and eyes
on the prize. Fast forward to today, many of
those queens are no longer performing and
my star is still rising! That’s showbiz, ladies!
What was your look back then?
I wore a pink, sequined head-to-heel cat
suit for my debut in the talent quest (mainly
because I didn’t want to shave my hairy chest
and legs). These days I’m seen flashing a lot
more flesh. Needless to say, the hair is gone
and I’m as smooth as a sphinx!
Why did you decide to go from
performance into DJing?
After 10 years onstage I wanted to step off and give the
younger queens their chance
to shine. Music has always
been my greatest passion, so
it was a natural progression
for me.
Any memorable
wardrobe
malfunctions?
I was leading a huge show in
front of 8,000 people once, and
I seriously thought something had popped
out! There were lots of photographers in front
of the stage all snapping away, but I just kept
going, hoping it wasn’t so obvious. It turned
out everything was where it was supposed to
be. It was the belt made out of mirror balls
I was wearing that confused me.
I’ve read that you want to start recording.
Any original music on the way for 2012?
It is something I have wanted to do for a long
time. I wanted to build up a strong fan base before I release anything, and I have that now, so
it’s getting closer. Lately I have
had some interest from record

flynightclub.com
What advice do you have for
other queens who want to DJ?
If music is a genuine passion, then go for it!
Having a drag queen on the decks is not only
a great visual, but it lets people know that we
aren’t all ditzy, bitchy queens that only know
how to prance around and lip-sync.
What’s the most surprising
proposition you’ve received
in drag?
Straight boys wanting to get kinky under the
decks . . . while I’m playing! Also, I think it’s
hysterical when someone orders a drink!
What’s the most unusual place you’ve
discovered glitter the morning after?
You would have to ask that question of many
wives around the world.

Bellini At Large Paul Bellini
[email protected]
Bellini gets a gay history
lesson from Pearse Murray,
the host of Proud FM’s
A Fabulous Morning
God save the
tony fong
F
or the past year, I’ve been hosting
the Sunday afternoon show on Proud
FM. For those of you pretending not
to know, Proud FM is the first commercial
queer radio station on Earth, and it’s located
right here in ungrateful little Toronto. More
than one wag has complained about the low
signal strength, as Proud FM can really be
heard only in a car or online. But that doesn’t
stop me from doing my show, which I adore,
as it gives me yet another avenue of selfpromotion (I know, it never stops with me).
This year for Pride, the station gave me my
first-ever chance to ride on a float. I hopped
on with a dozen scantily clad 20-somethings
armed with water guns. A young girl, confused
as to why such an old man would even be on
the float, assumed I was there to fill the guns
from the pump at the back. I obliged. We went
through a lot of water dousing the crowd. But
suddenly, people fired back, drenching us with
a thousand streams of water. I got hit in the
face repeatedly, which almost caused me to
drown! It was terrifying. I took cover behind
the balloon display hanging off the back of our
float for the rest of the ride.
I probably should have got in the car
driving behind us with 69-year-old Pearse
Murray. No one soaked him with a water pistol. Pearse hosts the weekend show called A
Fabulous Morning. He interviews lots of good
guests: Donny Osmond, Debbie Reynolds,
Kim Cattrall, Carrie Fisher and Lily Tomlin.
He’s covered the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence; filmmaker David Secter, who made
Canada’s first-ever English-language gay
movie; the Gay Games; bullying; and prostate
cancer, and all the shows are archived on the
Proud FM podcasts page.
“When you get older, gay men become
invisible, and I wanted to create a voice for
them on Proud FM,” Pearse says. He started
working at the station as “the oldest intern
they ever had.” A few months into the job,
he had a triple bypass and spent the rest of
the year out of commission. But when he
Pearse and Bellini
love having large mics
dangling in their faces.
returned, they offered him his own show.
Out since 1962, he remembers a day when
“you could shoot a cannon down Yonge St
on a Sunday; there was nothing open. So
people cruised each other on the streets that
day. It was fun.”
Pearse was a reporter and copywriter in
Cornwall, but when he lost his job he moved
to Toronto and got a gig at Bemelmans restaurant. Then one day, he saw his real estate
agent drive off in a Jaguar; he decided to go
into real estate that very day. He met his husband 35 years ago and they’ve been together
ever since. “We were both workaholics when
we met,” he says. “He was Joseph Papp’s assistant at the Public Theater in New York, and
I worked for Darrell Kent, so we often didn’t
see much of each other.”
Now mostly retired from real estate,
Pearse keeps busy by volunteering at Casey
House, ACT and the Canadian Lesbian and
Gay Archives, and, of course, he continues to
plunge headlong into his show. Only once did
things screw up. “I was interviewing a wellknown gay actor and writer, and I’d ask him
a question and he’d answer, ‘That’s a stupid
question’ every time, so I just erased the
whole interview,” he says. [Hint: the actor
has a gravelly voice.]
Throughout it all, Pearse sticks to his catch
phrase — God save the queens! “Back in the
’50s we used to say that to each other in the
bars,” he chuckles. “Life seems so good,” he
says, summing it up. It’s the kind of sentiment
that clearly makes him the ideal host for a
show called A Fabulous Morning.

What’s your favourite
piece of clothing?
I would have to say my undies!
Your biggest pet peeve is . . .
Being hung up on (phone).
What was the craziest
thing you’ve done?
Craziest thing I’ve done was
wearing five-inch heels during
Pride 2012. WAIT! I do want
to skydive this year, so that’s a
crazy thing to come.
What is something most
people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I
love pedicures, and I also like
Jell-O with a side of meatballs
— weird, I know!
How do you relax?
With a three-piece and fries
and gravy from Popeye’s!
And sometimes a doobie and
a movie, or I do some yoga to
get centred.
Where’s the wildest
place you’ve had sex?
LMAO. I love this question!
I would have to say there’s
two places: first was my ex’s
balcony and the second was at
a park in Barrie.
Is there anything you’re dying
to tell fab readers?
I’m happy and confident with
my life; you should be, too.
Don’t let others push you down.
Pick your bitch ass up, dust off
your shoulders and your cute
ass and come back with a full
force of fierceness! Peace, love
and pride! FYI, in case you’re
wondering, I’m vers!
