Dr. Alejandro Nitsch Montiel Diabetes Internal Medicine Primary Care Doctor's Profile Dr. Alejandro Nitsch is a specialist in internal medicine and an expert in the diagnosis and control of all types of diabetes. Since the early 1980’s, Dr. Nitsch has been devoted to the treatment of diabetes and is the medical director of the Diabet Centro the leading diabetes clinic in Central America, conveniently located in zona 10 hospital district of Guatemala City. Diabet Centro is an institution dedicated to the care, education and empowerment of patients with diabetes mellitus. In addition to receiving attentive personal care and precise treatment planning, diabetes patients throughout Central America depend on Diabet Centro for the most efficient and technologically advanced insulin infusion pumps available. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) helps to minimize the guesswork that comes from making decisions based solely on one daily reading, for better diabetes management. Dr. Nitsch notes the alarming increase in diabetes cases, especially in young people, due to poor diet, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. Diabetes poses more of a public health concern than ever befor because at least 75% of diabetics live in low and middle-income countries. According to the World Health Organization, 9% of adults 18 years and older worldwide were living with diabetes in 2014. In his capacity as a hospital consultant, Dr. Nitsch works closely together with medical specialists such as ophthalmologists, nephrologists, cardiologists and surgeons so that they can recognize the symptoms and implications that are specific to diabetes patients. To this end, Dr. Nitsch and his wife have written a curriculum of post-graduate studies for medical specialists called Care and Attention for Diabetics, so that medical providers can be more aware of considering diabetes implications in their own field of medicine. The program has been certified by the International Diabetes Federation since 2009. Several pharmaceutical companies from around the world, like Abbot, Astra Zeneca, Novartis, Medtronic and Sanofi depend on Dr Nitsch as a highly-respected KOL, or “Key Opinion Leader” for guidance in producing and distributing the most effective medications. Dra. Fabiola Prado, an internal medicine specialist and an educator of health services, is the wife of Dr. Nitsch and co-author of their two highly successful books on the subject. No Me Cierra el Pantalon: Claves Para Tomar el Control de Diabetes (My Pants Don’t Close: Keys to Taking Control of Diabetes) and Testigo de Milagros (Witness to Miracles). Both publications are collections of interesting case studies about diabetes patients, to illustrate the many facets of the disease, told in their own words, through personal and emotional stories. “We are always trying to be more effective and to share that knowledge with the patient. Dr. Nitch notes the importance of qualifying goals and improvement by keeping accurate statistics, as a confirmation of his excellent results. To benefit the public as much as we would like, we need to have more government and society involvement.” At the World Diabetes Congress, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in December 2017, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has certified Diabetcentro of Guatemala City as one of the Education Centers recognized by that institution. This certification has been granted to only six centers in Latin America, so Dr. Nitsch and his staff were surprised and honored to have received the notification last November. Diabetcentro received the IDF certification in International Diabetic Patient Educational Quality for the first time in 2009 in Montreal, Canada, at the time one of three centers worldwide. They received recertification in 2013 at the annual congress held in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Nitch and his wife Dra. Fabioa Prado de Nitsch are grateful for the recognition of their hard work in promoting diabetes education to health professionals in Guatemala since 2006, through the course “Care for People with Diabetes”. With the support of the international affiliation with the Central American and Caribbean region, more than 200 students had graduated their course in 2015. This recognition encourages us to continue efforts to share knowledge and experiences with health professionals in the region and seek constant improvement in our quality of care for people with diabetes. Dr. Nitsch’s lifelong dedication is to prevent and successfully treat patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The goal is to be under control and self-managed. “We empower the patient to be an expert in control of their own diabetes”, says Dr. Nitsch. From the first anxious meeting to the successful lifetime of coordination of care, the doctor becomes a close friend and absolute confidant of all his patients. Dr. Nitsch says, “I love to hear people tell their story. That’s when I can help them the most.” Visit: https://centralamericadoctors.com/ Contact Details Spanish, English, Portuguese Centro Medico II Office #603 6ta Avenida 3-22, zona 10 Guatemala City, Guatemala, Centro America 9:30-1:00pm and 3:00-6:00pm
