Anschutz Library
Collections at Anschutz include the sciences, business and
U.S. government documents, as well as the T.R. Smith Map
Collection and the GIS and Numeric Data Lab. Anschutz also
serves as a 24-hour study facility for students and houses
the new Learning Studio, an innovative centralized student
resource center made possible by KU Libraries’ partnership
with Student Success and KU Information Technology.
Gorton Music & Dance Library
The Music and Dance Library, located in Murphy Hall, contains
more than 111,000 scores, books, sound recordings and other
volumes, and is the leading music collection in the Great Plains
region. The Hale Media System located in this library supports
individual and group listening and viewing options for many
academic programs. The library also provides access to the
rich resources of the Archive of Recorded Sound, which
features extensive jazz and opera holdings.
Library Annex
Located on Lawrence’s west campus, the Library Annex is
a high density preservation and storage facility for low-use
library materials. The transfer of such materials to the Library
Annex increases the space available for users in the main
campus library buildings. It also provides conservation level
environmental controls for books and journals, archives and
manuscripts and rare and fragile materials.
Murphy Art & Architecture Library
These collections, located in the Spencer Museum of Art,
document the visual arts worldwide to support programs
in art, design, architecture and the history of art.
Regents Center Library
This branch provides services at the KU
Edwards Campus in suburban Kansas City.
Spahr Engineering Library
Located between Learned and Eaton Halls, this
library features collaborative and individual
study space, as well as resources to support
engineering and computer science fields.
Kenneth Spencer Research Library
The University Archives are housed here,
as are manuscripts and rare books. Also
in Spencer is the Kansas Collection, which
includes books, manuscripts, maps, photographs
and other items documenting the state’s history.
Watson Library
The oldest and largest of the university’s
libraries, Watson houses collections in the social
sciences, humanities, education, journalism and
social welfare. Highlights include the East Asian,
Slavic, and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American
collections. The new Center for Digital Scholars
supports KU researchers in an evolving research
environment with expertise and tools for creating
and using digital scholarship to enhance research,
teaching and learning at the University of Kansas.
The libraries’ administrative offices and preservation
department are also housed here.
“ The expansive collection of African
is special to this region.”

Message from the dean
There’s an African proverb that
says, “If you want to go fast,
go alone; if you want to go far,
go together.” We find ourselves
needing to go far while maintaining
a brisk pace. Collaborating with key
campus and community partners
helps us fill several vital roles at KU.
Our role with students typically
begins with providing study spaces
with the services that they need,
from research help to online access
and printing, but our work doesn’t
end there. Our goal is to engage
students, give them opportunities
and resources to dig deeper into
their academic work, and build
spaces optimized for studying.
Strategic partnerships with Student
Success, KU Information Technology
and others help us achieve this goal,
which in turn supports Chancellor
Gray-Little’s goals for student
recruitment and retention.
“ Collaborating with key

campus and community partners

2
Our role with faculty is also rapidly
expanding. Subject librarians still
work with instructors to create
meaningful research assignments
and improve their students’
research skills, and they help
researchers discover the
information they need. But now,
librarians and library staff also
help researchers find data sets,
- Kim Warren
perform statistical analysis, visualize
the results (particularly geospacial
information), navigate publishers’
agreements to preserve the ability
to make the results of their research
available more broadly, and more.
Our partnerships with the College
of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Hall
Center for the Humanities and
others give us a broader reach and
enable us to work more closely
with KU faculty, supporting the
university’s overall goal to raise the
profile of research at KU.
None of this would be possible
without our friends and benefactors,
who are also key partners in this
endeavor. The Learning Studio
at Anschutz Library would not
be possible without private
support and funding, and indeed
that project is ongoing and many
giving opportunities are still
available. Likewise, the Center
for Digital Scholarship, a locus of
our expanded efforts for faculty,
provides tremendous opportunities
to support research done at KU
through the Libraries.

TIBBETS GIFT
A seldom seen side of the silver screen has come to KU
Libraries. John Tibbets, associate professor of film studies,
has given the Spencer Research Library his collection of
rare promotional materials for films from the late 70’s
through 2000. The collection features posters, movie
stills, biographies and photographs.
PURCHASE-ON-DEMAND PROGR AM
KU Libraries launched a new purchase-on-demand
program that makes it easier and faster for researchers
to get the printed books and monographs they need,
while lowering costs. Patrons can now view records in
the library catalog that are not owned by KU Libraries
and initiate an automated purchase-on-demand request.
Deborah Dandridge
[field archivist for
Spencer’s African
American Experience
collection project] was
instrumental in this
project. She did the
magical work that
archivists can do—
she found obscure
information I would
not have been able
to locate.

WORLD’S FAIR
A new gift has brought the world, or more specifically,
the World’s Fair, to KU Libraries. Sharon Perry Galloway
recently gave the Spencer Research Library a gift of
extensive World’s Fair memorabilia collected with her
late husband, Thomas. The vast collection includes
maps, books, catalogs and brochures from several of
the World’s Fairs.
KU Libraries designed and launched the KU Digital
Commons in 2010 as a showcase for digital projects and
collections from disciplines across the KU campus. Digital
research, online journals, scholarly publishing and image
collections are freely available (www.lib.ku.edu/digitalcommons).
Collections include the University Archives, the Dole Archives,
Florence Nightingale Letters and the Spencer Museum of
Art’s online collection.

THE LEARNING STUDIO
The Learning Studio at Anschutz Library, which brings
together essential student services in an effort to improve
recruitment, engagement and retention at KU, is partway
through its extreme makeover. Progress will continue
throughout the fall semester.
The end result of the library renovation project will be
spaces optimized for learning, whether that learning
takes place in a solo, quiet mode or in a small- or
larger-group setting.
The first phase of the project, now completed, brings
together flexible study spaces, library services, the KU
Writing Center, KU Info and tutoring in one location.
Phase one also resulted in infrastructure improvements
and included installing new carpet, new group spaces,
new lounge furniture and some new café furniture, as
well as a new service point on the third floor.
The second phase of the project will involve remodeling
the staff areas, relocating service desks and building
more group study rooms, tutor rooms and the café
area. In addition to creating more useful spaces, a
variety of support staff will be on hand to help
students in the completed Learning Studio.
The goal is to provide the resources, support, and
engagement that KU students need to thrive
academically. Through creating an appealing academic
environment for students, the studio encourages
intellectual growth and achievement.
Learning Studio partners
include KU Libraries,
Student Success and KU
Information Technology.

Taking the
[libraries’]
research class
this summer
was very helpful,
because I know I
can go to them and
other librarians
for help.
“ The libraries are going to be
very important to me as a student.”
- Keena Mays
In high school,
I didn’t have to
use the library, so
without the class,
I just would have
been lost, honestly.
The libraries are
going to be very
important for me as
a student, because of
the resources and the
help I can get there,
not just for papers
but for other
assignments.

“ I want to help KU Libraries continue to develop

as a nexus for education and research
- Town Peterson
“
The libraries are
a major point of
excellence
for KU.
Open access
initiatives like
the one supported
by KU Libraries
are nothing short
of critical, because
while the cost of
producing journals
is declining, the cost
of subscriptions keeps
increasing. Open
access asserts the
right of scholars to our
intellectual property,
the product of our
research, and our right
to share that property
with other researchers.
Providing open
access to journals and
articles gives essential
tools to researchers
worldwide, because
we can’t do our work
without putting it
into context with
the work of our
colleagues.

GOVERNOR’S ART AWARD
Susan Craig, head of the Murphy Art and Architecture
Library, was selected for a Governor’s Arts Award, an annual
award given to distinguished Kansas artists, patrons and arts
educators. Craig was honored for documenting the lives of
more than 2,600 Kansas artists in her unique and awardwinning e-book “Biographical Dictionary of Kansas Artists.”
CENTER for DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP
A new resource for researchers opened in Watson Library
in spring 2010. The Center for Digital Scholarship offers
services and consultation for researchers in a variety of
fields. Center staff help faculty and graduate students
design and publish digital research and produce unique digital
content. The center is the result of an ongoing collaboration
between KU Libraries and the College of Liberal Arts &
Sciences, a partnership that highlights the library’s role as
the physical and intellectual commons on campus.
What’s next:
INSTITUTE for DIGITAL RESEARCH
in the HUMANITIES
This fall, KU Libraries, in partnership with the Hall Center
for the Humanities and the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences, launched the new Institute for Digital Research
in the Humanities to address a growing need on campus
for digital services and expertise in humanities research.
The Institute will support humanities research at KU by
promoting the use of computing technology to advance
scholarship across disciplines, publish and share scholarly
research through new Web-based models and study the
impact of technology on the scholarly record. Arienne
Dwyer, associate professor of linguistic anthropology, and
Brian Rosenblum, associate librarian at KU Libraries, will
serve as the Institute’s co-directors.

VOSPER SOCIETY
2009-10 marked the first full year of the Vosper Society.
Named for celebrated librarian and former director of KU
Libraries Robert Vosper (1913-1994), the Vosper Society
honors those who demonstrate interest in and support
for KU Libraries’ purpose, vision and potential as an
essential partner to scholarship at KU and beyond.
The society, which has more than 700 members,
recognizes five giving levels, with baseline annual
membership achieved with a gift of at least $100 or
a gift in kind made during the fiscal year which ended
June 30, 2010. For a list of members, see pages 14-17.
HISTORY of the JAYHAWK
Thanks to a partnership with the KU Alumni Association,
KU Libraries is sharing the history of the Jayhawk with
audiences across Kansas and the Midwest. The program,
featuring University Archivist Becky Schulte, covers the
origins of KU’s beloved mascot and explains the Libraries’
role in preserving KU history. The presentation includes
Jayhawk images gathered from more than a century of KU
yearbooks, memorabilia and historical documents from the
Jayhawk’s prehistory, through the first “official” Jayhawk
drawn in 1912 to the current incarnation.

TOUCHDOWN CHALLENGE for KU LIBR ARIES
The University of Kansas Libraries has teamed up with KU
Head Football Coach Turner Gill to launch a new fundraising
campaign to support KU Libraries. The new Touchdown
Challenge for KU Libraries is a program dedicated to raising
funds for the seven libraries on the KU campus. Participation
in the challenge (www.lib.ku.edu/touchdown) requires a pledge
of a certain amount of money per touchdown that KU scores.
The contributions support KU Libraries’ enrichment fund.
