The Masters Tournament

demonstrations by a player or his partisans are not proper because of the possible effect upon other

The US Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA is golf's
grandest stage, and year after year fans are treated to some of
the most spectacular competition in the game. With its iconic
green jacket and long and storied history, the Masters truly is
a tradition unlike any other and considered to be the best-run
golf tournament in the world by fans and golfers alike.
THE CLUBHOUSE
The building which was to become the Clubhouse was
constructed in 1854 by the owner of the then indigo
plantation, Dennis Redmond. It was later used as the home of
Baron Berckmans. It is considered the first cement house
constructed in the South.
HISTORY & TRADITIONS
CABINS
Augusta National Golf Club was founded
by Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur
champion, and Clifford Roberts, an astute
investment banker in New York. The 365acre
property,
originally
Fruitland
Nurseries, was purchased in 1931 for
$70,000. Jones helped design the golf
course, working alongside the esteemed
British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie.
Jones's popularity within the game helped
attract golf's biggest stars to the Masters,
beginning with the inaugural event in 1934.
Since then, some of golf’s most memorable
moments – both comebacks and collapses –
have taken place on the lush course. The
Masters Tournament has been held the first
full week of April every year since its
inception except for 1943-1945. During
this time, the tournament was cancelled due to World War II
and the course was used to raise cattle and turkeys to help the
war effort. Augusta National is closed all summer, from the
third week of May until mid-October, primarily for
renovations. Although a single performance at the Masters
can define a player’s career, the game’s greatest players have
won multiple titles, including Jack Nicklaus (6), Arnold
Palmer (4), Tiger Woods (4) and Sam Snead (3).
Located on the grounds of Augusta national
are ten cabins providing lodging for
members and their guests. Seven cabins
from a semi-circle to the east of No. 10
fairway and west of the Par 3 course. The
Eisenhower, Butler and Roberts Cabins
stand alone. The Eisenhower Cabin was
built in 1953 by the Club for President and
Mrs. Eisenhower. The home was built to
specifications of Presidential security, while
providing daily conveniences. In 1964 the
Butler Cabin was built, and one year later it
was used for the first time as a television
studio for the CBS broadcast.
THE PAR 3 CONTEST
First played in 1960, the Par 3 Contest has become a beloved
Wednesday tradition at the Masters. The Par 3 Course was
designed in 1958 by architect George Cobb and Augusta
National Chairman Clifford Roberts. The Contest field
includes Tournament participants, noncompeting past
champions, and Honorary Invitees. The nine-hole, par-27
course measures 1,060 yards and plays over DeSoto Springs
Pond and Ike's Pond. PAR 3 FACTS
 There have been 72 holes in one in the Contest's
history, a record of five in 2002.
 No winner of the Par 3 Contest has ever gone on to
win that year's Masters.
 The Contest is very sociable—players often have
their children caddie for them.
THE GREEN JACKET
In addition to a cash prize, the winner of the
tournament is presented with a distinctive
green jacket, formally awarded since 1949, and informally
acquired by the champions for many years before that. The
green sport coat is the official attire worn by members of
Augusta National while on the club grounds. The Green
Jacket is made exclusively since 1967 by Hamilton Tailoring
Co. of Cincinnati. The original purpose of the green jacket, as
envisioned by Cliff Roberts, was to identify club members as
"reliable sources of information" to visiting non-members -and to let waiters know who got the check at dinner.
Traditionally, last year's winner presents the jacket to the new
champion at the tournament's end.The recipient of the green
jacket has it presented to him inside the Butler Cabin soon
after the end of the tournament, and the presentation is then
repeated outside near the 18th green in front of the spectators.
Winners keep their jacket for the first year after their first
victory, and then return it to the club to wear whenever they
visit.

There is no way to apply to join Augusta National. Augusta
National memberships are by invitation only. When a
membership spot opens, the club decides who to invite and
mails the invitation.

prohibited on the grounds at all times. Cameras are strictly
prohibited on Tournament days. Violation of these policies
will subject the ticket holder to removal from the grounds and
the ticket purchase to the permanent loss of credentials.

No animals or pets are allowed onto the grounds except
animals necessary and specially trained to assist or guide the
physically impaired.
GENERAL SAFETY & WEATHER WARNINGS
For your personal safety, we ask that you exercise due care at
all times. Also, please be reminded that under wet conditions
the grounds may become slippery; take appropriate
precautions. Please observe all scoreboards/message boards
for the WEATHER WARNING sign. When the sign appears,
you are advised to take precautions even before play is
suspended. Suspension of play will be signaled by the
sounding of an air horn or similar alert. Seek shelter
immediately upon hearing the alert.
FACILITIES FOR THE PHYSICALLY IMPAIRED
Facilities for the physically impaired are provided. For the
safety of all concerned, it is suggested that those using
wheelchairs or similar transport use the hard surfaced roads
and flat observation areas as much as possible. The grass is
often damp and becomes very slippery on sloped areas. As a
reminder, those accompanying a physically impaired
individual must also have proper credentials.
TIME ZONE
Augusta observes Eastern Standard Time.
ATTIRE
Augusta National asks that appropriate clothing and shoes
should be worn at all times. Shorts have been generally
acceptable and walking shoes are recommended.
AUTOGRAPH POLICY
For everyone’s safety and protection, there will be a NO
AUTOGRAPH POLICY enforced on the golf course for the
practice and Tournament days. Autograph seeking is only
allowed around the Practice Range and on the Par 3 course
during the Par 3 Contest.
WEATHER
Average April temperatures in Augusta range from highs
around 80 degrees to lows around 50 degrees. Cool clothing,
hats, and sunscreen are recommended on warm, sunny days.

ETIQUETTE
The Masters Tournament is an international competition and
the contestants are considered invited guests. Everyone should
be treated with courtesy and respect. Patrons are expected to
behave with the utmost dignity and considerations at all times.
There are several rules of spectator etiquette that should be
followed when attending a golf tournament:
 Stay behind all ropes and cooperate with the
designated officials of the tournament
 Remain still throughout each shot, and do not move
until all players in the group have completed the hole
 Do not run
 Place all trash in the proper receptacles
 Any excessive noise or shouting will not be tolerated
and may result in dismissal

AUGUSTA NATIONAL LANDMARKS
AMEN CORNER
The name Amen Corner refers to hole Nos. 11, 12 and 13.
Amen Corner was first coined in a 1958 Sports Illustrated
article by Herbert Warren Wind, who wrote that it was
composed of the second half
of hole No. 11, hole No. 12
and the first half of hole No.
13. Wind was searching for an
appropriate name for the
location where the critical
action had taken place that
year. He borrowed the name
from an old jazz recording
"Shoutin' in that Amen
Corner".
RAE’S CREEK
Named after John Rae, who died in 1789. Rae’s Creek runs in
front of No. 12 green, has a tributary evident at No. 13 tee,
and flows at the back of No. 11 green. It was Rae’s house
which was the farthest fortress up the Savannah River from
Fort Augusta. The house kept residents safe during Indian
attacks when the fort was out of reach.
EISENHOWER TREE
Located at hole No. 17, the Eisenhower Tree is approximately
210 yards from the Masters tee and left-center of the fairway.
The loblolly pine is approximately 65 feet high and about 100
to 125 years old. The former President of the United States
and Club member hit into the tree so often he campaigned to
have it removed. At a Club’s governors meeting in 1956,
Eisenhower proposed cutting the tree down. Clifford Roberts
promptly ruled him out of order and adjourned the meeting.
The pine has been linked to Eisenhower since then.
THE BIG OAK
"The big oak tree" on the golf course side of the Clubhouse is
a live oak, Quercus virginiana. It was planted when the
building was completed in the
late 1850s, making the tree
approximately 145-150 years old.
Several other live oaks were
planted on the grounds about the
same time. The "big oak" is one
of the favorite gathering places
during the Masters Tournament.
FOUNDERS CIRCLE
Located at the base of the flagpole in front of the Clubhouse,
the Founders Circle features two plaques dedicated to
founding members Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts.
IKE’S POND
It was during his second visit to Augusta National that
General Eisenhower walked through the woods on the eastern
part of the Club’s property. Upon his return, he informed
Cliff Roberts that he had found the perfect place to build a
dam if the Club ever wished to have a fishpond. Ike’s Pond
was promptly built and named, and the dam was located
exactly where Ike suggested it should be placed, the
construction engineer concurring in the location.
CROW’S NEST
Available for amateurs wishing to be housed there during the
Masters Tournament, the Crow's Nest provides living space
for up to five individuals. Rising from the approximately 30
by 40 foot room is the Clubhouse's 11 foot square cupola. The
cupola features windows on all sides and can only be reached
by ladder.
MAGNOLIA LANE
The 61 large magnolia trees that line both sides of Magnolia
Lane date back to
approximately the late
1850s and were planted as
seeds by the Berckmans.
In 1947, Magnolia Lane
was paved for the first
time. It is approximately
330 yards long, extending
from the entrance gate to
the Clubhouse.
BRIDGES
 The Hogan Bridge at No. 12 Green
Dedicated April 2, 1958, to honor Ben Hogan’s then
record score of 274 in 1953. His record rounds of
70-69-66-69 stood for 12 years.
 The Nelson Bridge at No. 13 Tee
Dedicated April 2, 1958, to symbolize Byron
Nelson’s spectacular play on hole Nos. 12 and 13
when he scored 2-3 to pick up six strokes on Ralph
Guldahl and win the1937 Masters.
 The Sarazen Bridge at No. 15 Green
Dedicated April 6, 1955, commemorating the 20 th
anniversary of Gene Sarazen’s double eagle, which
he scores at the hole during the 1935 Masters final
round to tie leader Craig Wood. Sarazen would later
win a playoff.

SUGGESTED VIEWING SPOTS
TIPS FROMS THE VETERANS
(please see attached course guide for more details)
Hole 4: Spectators can view action on two holes while
behind the No. 4 tee. There are views of the approach to
the No. 3 green and the tee shot on the par-3 No. 4.
Hole 7: Behind the green, spectators can see down the No.
2 and No. 3 fairways, the No. 7 green, the No. 8 tee and
the No. 17 fairway.
Hole 12: In the heart of Amen Corner, spectators behind
the tee can see the approach shots to No. 11, the entire
12th hole, and tee shots and second shots on the par-5 No.
13.
Hole 16: A new viewing area (above) was created here
thanks to a storm in July 2006 that took down several
trees. The natural seating area allows patrons to see the
green at Nos. 6, 15 and 16 and the tee shot at No. 17.
Hole 18: If you get a spot early behind the No. 18 green,
you can see approach shots to the final green and have a
view of several other holes.
Practice Facility: You can watch as golfers prepare for
their round.
TAKE A STAND: The observation stands are great places
to take in a lot of different holes. The ones at Amen Corner
and around the 15th green/16th tee fill up quickly. Try the
one behind the No. 8 green; you can see most of No. 8, the
No. 9 tee and the first green.
SEEK THE HIGH GROUND: Some credit Augusta
National as being among golf's first "stadium" courses
because of the hilly terrain. A lot of the natural slopes offer
prime viewing perches. The area behind the seventh green
lets you take in plenty of action on the surrounding holes.
GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Because of their
distance from the main entrance, Nos. 4 and 5 require some
effort to reach. The hike is worth it. There are fewer
patrons entering the gate near the fifth green, but
concessions, restrooms and souvenirs are all a short
distance away.
