Summer 2013 - Maclay School
Summer 2013 •C apital Campaign Kicks Off • Class of 2013 Graduation • Super Star Students •A nd a special MACLAY Alumni section A Letter From The Headmaster Dear Maclay Community, It is an exciting time for Maclay! The school year brought many changes and improvements to our campus. We successfully kicked off a capital campaign in February and have broken ground on new classrooms for the Lower School. Major transformations are well under way in the 45-year old building, and we are working under a very tight deadline to be up and running by opening day this fall. Needless to say, August 19th will be a day we are all looking forward to! We also plan to break ground on a new athletics field house August 1st thanks to the donations of some very generous supporters. This facility will serve as the primary hub for 27 of our sports teams and add public restrooms and a much needed concession stand for Frank Shaw Field. Though much is ahead, I reflect back on the many changes over the past school year. The Cartee Gym saw renovations to the stage including lighting, curtains, and flooring and held the first ever Cabaret featuring the talents of over 70 of our students. The well-travelled road to the Webster Center was paved and new signage was added. Maclay’s students had another amazing year with our seniors earning over $6.4 million dollars in scholarships including nine who received over $200,000 plus in aid. We graduated 99 students, 44 of whom were charter members. We had six Eagle Scouts and 12 student-athletes signed letters of intent to play college athletics in a wide range of sports at universities like George Washington, Duke, University of Connecticut, and University of Virginia, to name a few. Please enjoy this edition of the Virtu Magazine that not only gives you information about the plans for next year and the many highlights of last, but also includes a section on our impressive alumni who make us so proud. Thanks for all your support and have a wonderful summer. Sincerely, William W. This past school year, a Head of School search committee was formed to begin the processes of this important transition for Maclay School. The first task for the committee was to research and select a search firm. After interviewing three firms on campus during the first week of May, the committee selected Ralph Rip Kirby Davison and Marguerite Lloyd of Carney, Sandoe and Associates. Ralph and Marguerite visited the school on May 9th and 10th and met with various stakeholders including parents, grandparents, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and students. The mission for the trip was to inform the community about the process and to gather information about the school and the qualities needed in a new head. If you did not have a chance to meet with Ralph and Marguerite and would like to contact our consultants directly, the contact information for Ralph and Marguerite is posted on the Maclay website. The next step will be for Marguerite and Ralph to use the knowledge that they have gathered during their visit to produce a position statement. Once the statement has been approved by the committee, it will be used in recruiting candidates. The active recruiting phase will continue throughout the summer resulting in a list of semi-finalist candidates being presented to the committee by late summer or early fall. The ultimate goal is to name a new head of school by November 2013. Updates will be posted on the website at www.maclay.org/search. I have been very impressed with our consultants and look forward to a productive search process. If you wish to contact me regarding the search, you may do so by emailing [email protected]. At the centerpiece of this three-year campaign is the funding of a new Lower School, major athletic improvements, enhancements to our fine arts program, and paving of our perimeter road. In order to completely fund this critical first phase of the campaign, we need to raise $4 million, and we are delighted to report that since launching the campaign just a few months ago, we are halfway to goal with over $2 million in commitments. Karen Unger Charlie Dudley This capital campaign is committed to these crucial projects as they are the first step in helping to shape the future of Maclay School. While Maclay offers its students an unsurpassed worldclass education, the exterior of our lower school building does not reflect the great things that occur each day within the interior of the building. In addition, updated technology and other classroom updates will ensure that our children are staying current on the latest advancements in education. For Maclay School to retain its position of prominence in education in the region, we must ensure that our lower school has the best there is to offer from top to bottom. And, while Maclay is known for its academic prowess, we have also developed a strong reputation as an athletic powerhouse earning 35 state titles and numerous “Florida Program of the Year” honors. Our new field house, which will be fully constructed and completed this fall thanks to generous contributions from a Maclay grandparent, will provide a new home for the 57 athletic teams that currently rely on the overtaxed Webster Center. We are elated with the rapid progress and strong early support we have received for the Maclay Capital Campaign, but our work is not yet done. If you have not yet made your commitment to the Maclay Capital Campaign, we invite you to join this important mission and join our team effort. In order for this campaign to be successful, we need all hands on deck. Onward and upward! Take care, Karen Unger Capital Campaign Co-Chair Charlie Dudley Capital Campaign Co-Chair 2 Overview Lower School/Administration Building - $2.75 million The newly renovated Lower School and Administration Building will include new classrooms for art and computer labs along with completely refurbished classrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and offices. The lighting, flooring, heating and air, and roof will be replaced. A new facade with a clock tower will be complemented by new landscaping, outdoor lighting, and improved traffic pattern. This renovation is well underway and school will be ready to reopen August 19th. Athletics - $1 million The new 8,000-square-foot field house will house 27 teams that compete in football, lacrosse, tennis, soccer, cross-county, and track. It will include public restrooms, offices, locker rooms, weight room, and concessions to serve events at Frank Shaw Field. Also included in the athletics improvements are new bleachers and field lighting. The ground breaking will take place during the summer and the facility will be ready later this fall. Fine Arts - $125,000 2013 State Champs Some renovations are already underway including the new revitalization of the Cartee Stage. New flooring, lighting, and curtains bring back the feel of the early days at Maclay. Other funds will go towards the renovation of the Black Box theater, stage sound as well as providing new equipment for the art labs and instruments for the music department. How Can I Get Involved? There are many ways to get involved in the Tomorrow Begins Today campaign, and it will take everyone to reach our goal. Naming opportunities for buildings to personalized pavers for the Maclay Legacy Walk will provide your family name a permanent place in Maclay history. FSU Readers Tanner Warwick and Daniella Paredes were participants in the contest. The kindergarten classes got a special treat for Dr. Seuss Week – Michael Ojo and Boris Bojanovsky who play basketball for the Florida State Seminoles, stopped by to read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. The two seven foot plus basketball stars not only read to the students but gave them tips on dunking! Living Museum Mrs. Minacci’s first grade class participated in a Living Museum. The class did a broad study of many American Greats in our history who made significant contributions to our country. They covered athletes, scientists, inventors, aviators, presidents, doctors, authors, and entertainers. Each student selected an American Great and did further research that included a writing piece, a timeline for the birth and death of their person, and an American Paper Collage piece based on the influence of Piet Mondrion. On February 26, the classroom became a Live Museum as the students came dressed in character. Some of the historical greats depicted were Abe Lincoln, Sally Ride, Pocahontas, Barack Obama, Thomas Edison, and Sandra Day O’Connor. 4 Living History: Rich Smith (as Thomas Edison) and Harrison Merrill (as Neil Armstrong) President Lincoln On Monday, February 11, the Maclay Lower School students were treated to a special visitor, Abraham Lincoln. J.P. Womack, a Lincoln impersonator from Los Angeles, California, shared stories about Lincoln, imitated his speeches, and answered questions about the historical figure. Students in grades first through fifth were mesmerized at the figure who wore the traditional Lincoln suit, beard, and top hat as he shared stories of his poor beginnings, entrance into politics, and assassination during his presidency. 100 Days Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school with the traditional 100-item t-shirt, headband, and of course, a march around campus. Mrs. Nelda Murphy and Mrs. Cindy Webster joined their grandson Justin. Aidenn Hafazz and Kaia Schnippert have fun at the parade. Grandparents Day The Maclay Parents Organization hosted the annual Grandparents Day for the Pre-K and Lower School. Hundreds of grandparents joined the students for a musical program and reception. 5 MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Walk-A-Thon Over 70 Maclay Middle School students participated in the 2nd Annual Junior Beta Walk-A-Thon to benefit the Joanna L. Francis Living Well Foundation. The students raised over $2,000, which they donated to the Foundation. Joanna Francis and friend Jennifer Taylor joined the boys and girls for the walk along with Junior Beta sponsors and Maclay teachers Maggie Masferrer and Susan Griffin. Duke TIP Congratulations to Bert Fletcher and Elizabeth Hanson for their impressive top 3% scores in the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Both Bert and Elizabeth received a Grand Recognition award from the Duke TIP. Damien Gorospe, Connor Rash, and Pace Wilson received State Recognition and qualified for the summer studies program. BETA CLUB 6 Thirty-three members of Junior Beta Club purchased books, bikes, games, scooters, sports equipment, and many other toys and gifts for the Guardian Ad Litem program which assists neglected children who are currently in the court system. ACADEMIC BOWL Nine middle school students along with their sponsor, Mrs. Stockstill, travelled to Chicago for the National Quiz Bowl Championship after winning the regional championship in January. The A-Team, made up of 8th graders Logan Rivers and Patrick Greene and 7th graders Bert Fletcher and Mercy Bickell, were amazing finishing 5-3 after Saturday’s round and 11th of 96 teams overall. Under the leadership of Daniel Hendon, the B-Team rose to the occasion with teammates Kagan Culliton, Tom Gray, Timmonds Ross, and Paris Miller. Mrs. Stockstill said this trip was a wonderful opportunity to help our students see how leadership, competitive spirit, hard work, and focus can carry them through tough challenges. Marauder Madness Week Even the teachers got in the spirit during dressing up for the Marauder Madness Spirit Week. Twin Day H20 The Maclay Middle School kicked off a campaign in February to raise $2,000 towards a water project for the Magungu Primary School in Tanzania, Africa. The project is a joint effort with two other schools, one in Cananda and one in Minnesota, to raise the $5,757 needed for the clean water initiative and the purchase of latrines. The students sold t-shirts, held a dodge ball tournament, and participated in water bucket races to meet their goal. 7 HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Poetry Outloud ~ By Lee Norment For an hour at least, iambs and trochees replaced the squeaks of sneakers and the bounces of basketballs in the Cartee Gym as Maclay held its annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Friday, November 30th. At Maclay, where the contest has been held since its national inception in 2005, students in high school English classrooms study, memorize, and perform their poems in their classes. Nineteen students participated in this year’s school-wide competition. In an age where English has been turned from thoughtful song to texted or blogged scree – so many piles of broken words and half-formed thoughts – for a few moments, these students reminded everyone of the power and beauty of our language. Connor Daughton, a junior, recited Thomas McGrath’s difficult, dense, and lengthy poem “Ode for the American Dead in Asia,” and he managed to capture the irony and sorrow of the speaker’s lament. His performance earned him a third place finish in the competition. Porter Crapps, a sophomore, who earned second place honors, pitch perfectly captured the strange grandeur of Lord Byron’s “The Destruction of Sennacherib.” 8 Clara Frances McClure, a junior, in a nuanced and haunting performance, communicated the profound loss of innocence and life at a Civil War battle with her performance of “Shiloh: A Requiem (April, 1862)” by Herman Melville. Ben Grubbs, who won the school competition, gave a rousing but original rendition of William Ernest Henley’s poem “Invictus.” Ben is a student in Dr. Kathy Scott’s sophomore Pre-AP British Literature class. Dr. Scott’s students have represented Maclay at the state competition for the past three years. In fact, her students finished in the top twenty-five in the state in 2010 and 2011. In addition to memorizing their poems, her students must also give an oral interpretation of the poems to their classes. Whatever the formula, she has clearly figured out how to make her students understand and enjoy poetry. Ben represented Maclay at the state competition on March 9th. All poems are written to be spoken. Our world seems louder and louder by the minute, many voices saying little. All present at the Poetry Out Loud took a break from the noise and had a chance to pause and listen to speech raised to its highest and most profound intensity. Inter-Club Council ICC’s charity this year was the Tallahassee Area Foster and Adoptive Parent Association. All year, an amazing group of Upper School students worked to raise money through bake sales and the annual Mr. Maclay Pageant in order to purchase Kits for Kids which provides care packages for children displaced from their home. ICC President Kinsey Grant and Student Council President Kristin Sweeney are pictured delivering kits to the TACAPA representative. Science Bowl The team of Nick Waddell, Kris Suchak, and Alex Weaver advanced to the Georgia Regional Science Bowl in Savannah. National Honor Society The inducted 44 new members this year. NHS officers Byn Baek, Lane Miller, Tova Ervin, and David Hill Robinson spoke on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, and character. The guest speaker was Judge Mark Walker who addressed the new inductees and the entire upper school student body. Freshman Aneesh Rahangadale took 1st place in Senior Biochemistry, senior Kendall Schmidt took 1st place in Behavioral Science and senior Willie Kim took 1st in Senior Computer Science at the Capital Regional . All three students were named to the All-State team. Maclay also had 16 students participate in the junior division and ten placed. Science Fair Chemathon Nick Waddell and Jimmy Mossell represented Maclay at the US National Chemistry Olympiad. The pair advanced after outstanding scores at the regional competition held at Florida State. Jimmy also placed first in the first-year chemistry exam. Anchor Club The partnered with Two Men and a Truck to collected personal packages for the Movers for Moms project. The company picked up the donated items and delivered them to homeless mothers at shelters on Mother’s Day. 9 World Languages Spanish classes Maclay’s Upper School advanced took a two-day language immersion trip. Thirteen students in the AP Spanish V and Advanced Spanish conversation classes traveled to St. Petersburg and Ybor City in Tampa. The students visited the Dali Museum where they toured and discussed the works of Salvador Dali, ate at Spanish speaking only restaurants, and visited the Ybor City Museum. The students learned of the settlement of Tampa in the 19th and 20th centuries by the Cuban immigrant community. Latin Team 10 Maclay School’s won the 64th Annual Florida Junior Classical League State Latin Forum which was held April 10-12 in Orlando. Twenty-five middle and high school students ranging from grades 7 through 12 competed in the three-day event. Three individuals, Luke Bickell, David Hill Robinson, and Kendall Schmidt, each earned a double first place award. Bickell was also recognized for being the second person in the history of FJCL to earn a perfect score a test, the first being Maclay alum Vasilije Dobrosavljevic in 2011. This is the third state title in five years for the Maclay Latin team. Latin teacher, Jeffrey Satriano, was also named Teacher of the Year. Eighty percent of Maclay Latin students that took the 2013 National Exam won an award. Robbie King earned his 4th consecutive summa cum laude award and gold medal. Rachel Rivers will be student representative for next year. Many of us can’t remember a Maclay without Rob Webster and Bill Jablon steering the ship so effectively with courage, strength, and vision. As a team, they gave our school the leadership needed to provide an education that would allow us to grow and thrive in a challenging environment of encouragement, love, and lots of laughter along the way. For many of us, our Maclay experience instilled in us the love of learning and confidence to face the world ahead. Rob was in the heart of student life at Maclay every day. He was the Maclay student’s biggest fan, doing everything that he could to help them succeed. With countless hours spent on advising and preparing students and their parents about the best ways to prepare for college, then countless more hours of writing personal recommendations to schools to ensure that no stone was left unturned when a student wanted the college of his or her dreams. He had an incredible heart for others that reached across generations; the work he did for the Maclay students and parents changed lives. When hearing of Rob’s passing, so many alumni and friends were in touch with special memories, here are a few: “Rob filled in for Bruce Irvin during a soccer road trip. While Coach Irvin was always laid back, Mr. Webster strode on the bus with his coat and tie and when we were ready to depart, he shouted ‘Remember, I hate to lose!’” “Mr. Webster always drew a hard line of integrity so we would know where to stand. Into classrooms 3,000 miles away, I carry his example.” “Secrets to staying out of Mr. Webster’s doghouse: 1. Always sign in /out when leaving and returning from off campus lunch, 2. Never, ever come to school with facial hair, 3. Don’t even think about wearing a baseball cap or he would add it to his collection.” “The professional and personal influence he had was exceptional. His complete love for and dedication to Maclay and the students’ lives he touched were infectious. His booming voice was accompanied by a tender heart and profound knowledge of academia that was always seeking to further the academic and personal growth of the students.” “Rob was one of the most decent and kind-hearted people I’ve known …. we loved Rob as students and now as adults. That is the mark of a great man – who can discipline strongly and fairly – yet still be loved, admired and respected. Those kind of people do not show up in life very often.” Most appropriately, the “new” gym is now called the Robert C. Webster, Jr. Gymnasium and Convocation Center. His generosity was beyond measure to the Maclay family and this hub of school activity now bears his name. I stop to read the plaque whenever I come to the Webster Center. The plaque that bears his image, which is his school picture complete with blue button down and pink tie, makes me feel like he is still here among us with his sage advice, booming voice, and amazing heart. The plaque reads: “Above all, there was laughter. He took his job schooling “Maclayites” very seriously and was serious much of the time, but the laughs we had were profound. When I toured the library as part of my 30th reunion, I chided him stating we didn’t have much of a library when I was in school. He quickly responded asking me how I knew, because he never saw me in the library anyway! The laughter shared then spoke volumes.” “Robert C. Webster, Jr. was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and beloved member of the Maclay School family. Mr. Webster devoted 41 years of his life educating and counseling students at Maclay. He was respected and beloved across generations. His sage advice was sought not only by students, but by parents, and colleagues as well. His booming voice and cheerful whistling will forever ring throughout the campus. He is as much a part of Maclay as the live oaks that grow on the school grounds. His daily presence is missed; his influence will be with us evermore.” “I remember vividly (no pun intended) when Rob interviewed for a job at Maclay. He was wearing yellow pants and a green shirt! Immediately, I recognized that he was a Renaissance man who would serve Maclay well – and he did.” “Hats off” Mr. Webster! We will forever remember and be grateful that our lives were touched by such a “larger than life” true gentleman. You made a difference throughout generations - your legacy continues. 21 Alumni Affairs Birth Announcements Austin Leigh Taylor Summer 2010 Megan Walker Taylor (‘00) and Brett Taylor Melissa Denny Tim writes, “After about 300 5-gallon experimental batches using as many traditional cider apples that we could get our hands on (varieties that are all but forgotten in the traditional grocery store, relics of the colonial era when cider was consumed in far greater quantities than beer, we created a cider that had no sugar, was very drinkable, and had awesome flavor and aroma from the traditional apples that we used.” Potter’s Craft Cider is a revival of authentic American farmhouse cider. In between studying, she has had time to enjoy Boston and Harvard University. Alex is on Harvard Graduate Council, and through that helped to plan a workshop on Innovations in Healthcare Delivery that brought together students from disciplines that were not implicitly healthcare-oriented to see how their industries might tackle problems that our healthcare system is facing. She also helped to plan a university-wide speed dating event! Alex is keeping an open mind about what specialty she wants to go into, but she’s particularly interested in pediatric oncology. This summer she is required to do a research project and is working with several pediatric oncologists. Alex will be looking at barriers that children and their families in the Dominican Republic face when trying to complete radiation therapy for solid tumors. Although the Dominican Republic has a relatively stable healthcare system and their citizens have universal coverage, patients still have difficulty accessing care; for example, they travel several hours to the clinic and then they must wait in line all day. Despite the seemingly narrow scope of this project, the challenges faced by this subgroup of children with cancer in the Dominican Republic are similar challenges to those felt by patients with other chronic diseases all over the world. This was the class’ first time to officially have a mid-decade gathering. (Apparently when you get this old, you need to start having your gatherings more frequently!) The celebration started with classmates attending Friday’s Homecoming parade, pep rally and Tailgate Gathering followed by Maclay’s football victory romp over St. Joseph’s High School. Friday’s events were made even more special when Mike Madsen brought his mom, Doris, to visit the campus. Mrs. Madsen served many years as Maclay’s receptionist and was always well-liked by the class, as well as the rest of the school and its visitors. The class’ reunion culminated Saturday evening at a gathering with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Wine Loft located in Tallahassee’s popular midtown area. Due to it being a FSU home game night, a number of classmates were not able to join the group until after the game. Regardless, many still managed to make it, with Rainey Booth, who now lives in Texas, being the class member who came the furthest distance to join in the celebration. Another highlight for this reunion was when Betty Jane Grant joined the class at the Loft to reminisce with her former students. “Mrs. Grant” was always one of the class’ favorite teachers whether she was teaching history, humanities or study skills. Her grace and loving nature has always been and always will be a wonderful example to everyone she touches. It was a great time for all who attended…we are looking forward to EVERYONE being there for our 40th in 2017! So put it on your calendar NOW!!!!! Class of 1987 We Love Getting Together... By Barbara Cairns The Class of 87’ had several gatherings this year. Whether it was playing volleyball, golf, tailgating, dinners out or strolling through Midtown, we had a wonderful time. It is hard to believe that we graduated from Maclay 25 years ago. Every time we get together, it seems as though we pick up where we left off. Whether it is reminiscing about our playground days in the lower school, the middle school hormones or the fun times in high school. Thank you so much to all of you who came to Tallahassee for the various events and hope to see everyone at the 30th Reunion in 2017! Keep in touch and if you have a change of email or address, please notify the Advancement/Alumni Office. 29 Alumni Affairs Reunions Class of 1992 By John Ratowski Kevin Wilson York Shuler, John Ratowski, Ashley Rushing, Mrs. Lina Knox Sofie Beckham, Ginny Boggs Yearty, Ninetta Violante, Brooke Bailey The Maclay Class of 1992 celebrated its twentieth reunion over the weekend of October 12 through 14. Our reunion officially began on Friday evening at the school. When we arrived, we were greeted at a table that the alumni office had set up in front of the Robert C. Webster Gymnasium & Convocation Center. Each of us was given a name tag, a dinner supplied by Dog Et Al, a ticket to the football game and some Maclay-emblazoned swag. A group of teachers, coaches, administrators and alumni were assembled nearby on the gym’s hardscape. They posed for pictures while catching up with everybody. The Webster Center is an impressive facility. We walked around on the basketball court and reminisced in the trophy room. John Roland was proud to see the Baseball Team’s 1991 State Championship trophy again. He was a member of the team that brought that one home for Maclay. Mr. Obrecht took us on a tour of the campus. He told us about the strategic plan, went over a list of upcoming projects and showed us where things like the tennis courts and library had been moved. He also described student life with the current facilities and how much it has been improved from the way it was when we were students. I never felt that the facilities that I used during my time as a student were lacking, but they were primitive compared to the technology-rich grounds of today. If I said that a lot had changed in twenty years, it would be an understatement. Maclay has been through a transformation. Maclay did not field a football team when the class of 1992 was roaming the halls, and I have to admit that the idea of a Maclay football game is still a foreign concept to me. This year’s Rob Steele, Jay Foster 30 Homecoming Weekend provided graduates, like myself, with a chance to see a football game and experience the energy that the football program brings to the Maclay campus. We sat in the bleachers along with a big crowd of students, parents, and other supporters who showed up to cheer and watch the Marauders blow St. Josephs away that night. After the football game, we drove to midtown to spend some time at The Wine Loft. Some of the members of our class had gone to Goodwood to see Cameron Williams play with his old band Tishamingo. Victoire Lecomte, a former foreign exchange student from France, arranged her travel schedule so she could be in Tallahassee for the Friday of Homecoming Weekend. The Class of 1992 had five foreign exchange students who spent senior year with us. Lars Leiro, a Norwegian foreign exchange student, came to our tenth reunion in 2002. So we’ve had the distinction of having a foreign exchange student attend both of our class reunions. Speaking of tenth reunions, my classmates and I met and socialized with a few members of the Maclay Class of 2002 while we were at The Wine Loft too. On Saturday night, we met at the home of Ginny Boggs Yearty and her husband James. They live in a beautiful house that overlooks a small lake. Ginny had her TVs tuned to the day’s important football games so we were able to watch Florida State beat Boston College and Florida beat Vanderbilt. Most of the guests sat in tables and chairs that were arranged around the pool. The weather was perfect for an outdoor event and mosquitos weren’t a problem even though we were close to a lake. Mrs. Lina Knox, our history and economics teacher, came over and hung out with us. Our dinner was catered by Piggy’s BBQ and we had cupcakes for dessert. The evening seemed to fly by and it had ended before I knew it. I had a great time and I am looking forward to our next reunion. Alumni Affairs Reunions Class of 2002 It was a great weekend visiting with old friends and re-living childhood memories. We are already looking forward to doing it again in 2022. Last October, Maclay’s Class of 2002 reunited in Tallahassee to celebrate the tenth anniversary of our graduation from Maclay. It was hard to believe that ten years have passed since we walked across the stage at Ruby Diamond. Here are some quotes from other members of the Class of 2002: By Daniel Navarro On Friday, October 12, we returned to Maclay’s campus for the homecoming parade, pep rally and highly anticipated football game. As we gathered with our significant others and families, we received a tour of campus from Dr. Lewis and it quickly became apparent that Maclay’s campus had changed as much as we had over the last ten years. The new pre-kindergarten and gymnasium are great additions to Maclay’s campus, and seeing the excitement for Maclay’s football team was a welcome sight for a generation of Marauders who did not get to experience Friday game days. Of course, it didn’t hurt that we got to watch Maclay dominate St. Joseph’s that evening. On Saturday, we gathered for dinner and drinks at Andrew’s Downtown where we flipped through yearbooks and laughed at old pictures. The most enjoyable part of the weekend was catching up with former classmates and meeting their families. It is amazing what we have accomplished over the past ten years. We have become doctors, dentists, nurses, soldiers, teachers and lawyers. Many of us have also become fathers, mothers, husbands and wives. We have traveled to at least six continents (I cannot confirm whether the Class of 2002 has conquered Antarctica.) And yet, despite all the has changed in each of our lives, within minutes, we were sitting around chatting as if we were still in one of Mr. or Mrs. Camarda’s history classes. “After 10 years of anticipation, I was excited to return to Maclay to see my classmates, friends, and teachers. It was a special weekend strengthening old friendships and creating new ones.” – Sarah Boland Skipper “While the emergence of social media has made it easier to connect with former classmates, until I saw everyone in person, it had not fully sunk in how far each of our lives have progressed since graduating from Maclay. Nothing can compare to seeing old friends and familiar faces as we told stories about our younger days and discussed plans for the future. Although the friendships never left, the reunion reopened the level of communication between former classmates that can only be gained by spending time with one another.” – Gray Munroe “Though we are lucky to bump into one another quite often around town, giving a hug and a ‘What’ve you been up to?’, getting fifty alums together in one place for the weekend made for such an enjoyable gathering. Spouses, babies, careers, and homes; so much changes in ten years. How wonderful and interesting it was hearing about what everyone’s life has become a decade after we jumped in the fountain at Ruby Diamond wearing our blue graduation gowns.” – Michelle Ford Bergschneider “It was really great seeing people I hadn’t seen in over ten years, and even though everybody looked a little older and maybe had a child or two, everyone was pretty much how I remembered them.” – Ross Brooks “It was great to see everyone and hilarious to read our “last will and testaments” from the 2002 school newspaper. What were we thinking?!?! Can’t wait to see where our lives take us in the next 10 years!!” – Annie McMillan Ball “It was great seeing all of the familiar faces again; it brought me back to my high schools days. It will be interesting to see how much we grow and change in another 10 years at the 20 year reunion!” – Bryan Cherry 31 Alumni Affairs In Memorium Mrs. Matilde Landrum Maclay Teacher 1968 – 1977 Upper School Spanish Originator & Director of FLES Program March 24, 2011 Mrs. Melanie Walker Maclay Teacher 1989 - 2011 Pre–K 4 March 4, 2011 Mrs. Dotty Haines Secretary to Mr. Webster March 18, 2011 Mr. Robert C. Walker Roberts Class of 1975 December 30, 2012 A Tribute To A Friend T ime marches on, as the saying goes. Things change. Life surprises us. But some of the things that endure are the memories of experiences and time shared with people who come into (and go out of) our lives. Our dear classmate, Susan Walker Roberts (class of ’75) died on December 30, 2012. Our graduating class was the last of the extremely small in number, 18-18 year olds, 9 girls and 9 guys. She was one of my best friends, but she was also an integral (defined as “necessary for completeness; essential”) part of our class and Maclay School’s early years. As I reminisced and grieved, I decided to spend time scrutinizing our senior yearbook. To my delight, I discovered (had I ever really seen it?) an advertisement from her father, Dr. Ed Walker’s optometry practice and am 99% sure that Susan was responsible for the content. As a memorial to her short but full life, these words seem to describe her life philosophy and are a befitting remembrance of one of the significant treasures God gives us–true and lasting friendship. “I can measure my worth either in terms of how much more I have than I need, or in terms of how much I share with those who need me. To share my gold is easy. To share my experience, my knowledge, my waking hours and my love demands more, for when I share the richness of these, I share my life.” - Author unknown.
