President’s Report
Summer has definitely arrived with some very
warm days, what a good excuse to come
down to the air conditioned comfort of our
new look club and enjoy a cool drink or have
a snack from the Café on the Park or try the
Fusion Brasserie with our two new Chefs Fred
and Simon who are providing great meals.

The feedback we are getting from the
members on the renovations we have
carried out so far has been very positive, in
particular the new layout of the lounge area
with the big screen TV and the TAB facility,
the new outdoor gaming area is also popular
with the players. The Board intends to
improve more of the facilities and amenities
provided to the members over the next few
years with a number of changes already in
the pipeline. We have been able to do these
renovations as the club is trading profitably
and we are able give back to the members
with better facilities.
At this time of the year we have many of our
very popular promotions which include the
iPad Giveaway, the Fete in the Park, which
is guaranteed to be a fun day for the whole
family, so bring the kids and come along
and enjoy the free entertainment and the
many stalls with a wide variety of items for
sale. Then Melbourne Cup Day is sure to
be a winner, the Senior Citizen’s Christmas
Luncheon and the Stars Tribute. Full details
of all these functions and many more are
listed in this edition of the Burst.
I attended Earlwood Bardwell Park RSL
recently with Club General Manager Ian
Todd and Administration Manager Debbie
Harris for the presentation of the cheques
to various charities under the ClubGrants
Scheme. Kingsgrove RSL gave out cheques
totaling $36,000 Calvary Hospital, Kingsgrove
Community Centre, TS Sirius Cadets to
name a few, these grants are in addition
to our normal grants to local sporting and
community groups. A full listing of those
groups is provided in this edition of the Burst.
My thanks to the Board of Directors who
have worked hard again this year to ensure
that we have a club that is financially viable and
also provides members with a club that they
enjoy to visit The Clubs General Manager
Ian Todd, Assistant General Manager Wayne
McFayden and the Management Team who,
along with the staff have worked extremely
hard to look after our members during the
year to make Kingsgrove RSL one of the best
in the municipality.
The Sub Branch and the Women’s Auxiliary
played an important role with the club and the
community, the Kingsgrove RSL Community
Group has also done a marvelous job in
providing outings and special treats for local
nursing home residents. This is another area
where Kingsgrove RSL Club assists the local
community.
Kingsgrove RSL came to the fore recently
to help out the Vanuatu Advent Herald
Choir when their bus broke down in the
M5 Tunnel near the Kingsgrove exit, they
were told by a member to come to the
Club, where Manager Nuno and the staff
organised some iced jugs of water and some
hot food from the bistro. The choir was then
kind enough to sing three songs, and what
great voices they had as members came
from throughout the club to listen to them. A
replacement bus arrived some time later and
they were off on their way to Canberra, very
happy with the hospitality they had received
at Kingsgrove RSL.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I wish
all Kingsgrove RSL Club members and their
families a Merry Christmas and a Happy,
Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

General Manager’s Report
We have been very busy at your Club since
the last edition of the Burst and as they say
this makes the year go faster and we now find
ourselves preparing for the festive season.
But before we highlight some of the coming
events I would like to review some of the
year gone past.
Recently your Club has undergone some
minor renovations with the installation of
louvres on the balcony with an extension
of the outdoor gaming area providing more
poker machines and additional comfort. This
then afforded us the opportunity to redesign
the lounge area and add a huge TV screen
and provide a self-serve TAB facility. With
the new carpet this lounge is looking great
and getting the thumbs up from members.
We are currently reviewing further stages of
renovations and are awaiting Council approval.
We have seen the Federal election pass and
applaud the stance of the new government
to preserve State Government’s legislation
of gaming. This will provide much relief to
the Club Industry who has a committed
relationship with the State Government with
all parties being dedicated to the Responsible
Conduct of Gambling.
In August your Club was represented by
President Alan Barnes and myself at the
ClubGRANTS presentation where we
pledged nearly $36,000 in donations to
various organisations. This raised our total
donations under the ClubGRANTS for the
year to over $102,000.
In June we farewelled manger Angelo
Farinaro. He joined the Club in 2011 as a
supervisor and progressed to the position of
beverage manager. Angelo has accepted a
role at Club Marconi and we wish him great
success.
This always opens opportunities and we
welcome new beverage manager Matt
Feening who has over ten years’ experience
in the Club industry recently at Cronulla
Sharks. We welcome Matt to our team.

Super-Healing
Summer Berries
Berries are a delicious addition
to any diet. But, taste is not
the only reason to love them.
Here’s why you should add
these seven super-healing
summer berries to your diet:
Blackberries
Loaded with vitamin C, blackberries
also contain ellagic acid—an important
phytonutrient that protects skin cells from
damaging UV rays. Ellagic acid also prevents
the breakdown of collagen in the skin that
occurs as we age and is linked to wrinkling.
Blueberries
Blueberries are phytonutrient
powerhouses. They contain: anthocyanins,
ellagic acid, quercetin, catechins, and salicylic
acid. If the latter sounds familiar, you may
recognize it as the drug we’ve come to
know as Aspirin. That’s right—blueberries
contain natural aspirin, but in this beautiful
and delicious packaging offered by Mother
Nature, there’s no worry about harmful
side effects. What’s more, blueberries
are proven to reduce heat shock proteins
that are linked with some forms of brain
disease, making these little marvels potent
weapons in the prevention of Alzheimer’s
and Parkinson’s disease as well as other
neurological disorders.
Loganberries
A cross between blackberries and
raspberries, these berries strengthen blood
vessels, making them an excellent addition
to help fight heart disease or varicose
veins. They contain rutin, which research
shows strengthens capillaries and improves
circulation. They look like long raspberries.
Currants
Currants contain gamma-linolenic acid that
inhibit the body’s histamine—the allergic
response in reaction to pollens. That makes
them great to help you avoid or eliminate
sinus congestion and itchy eyes linked to
seasonal allergies. Since they are tart, you
might enjoy them best mixed with other
berries.
Raspberries
Raspberries are still my favorite fruit.
Raspberries, like other berries, contain
10 THE BURST www.kingsgroversl.com.au
an important compound that is 10 times
more effective at alleviating inflammation
than aspirin. Containing the phytonutrient
ellagic acid, raspberries can help protect
against pollutants found in cigarette smoke,
processed foods, and may neutralize some
cancer-causing substances before they can
damage healthy cells. They’re delicious on
their own, in a fruit salad, in a smoothie, or
on top of a green salad.
Gooseberries
Vanilla Raspberry
Panna Cotta
• 2 cups heavy whipping cream
• 3/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• .25 ounce packet gelatin
• 3 tablespoons COLD water
• 6 ounces fresh raspberries
Gooseberries—the berries that resemble
green grapes—help you to feel happier. In
recent research in the journal Experimental
Neurobiology, scientists found that
gooseberries contain a flavonoid called
kaempferol that prevents the breakdown of
brain hormones serotonin and dopamine.
These brain chemicals naturally help us fight
stress and keep our spirits up.
• fresh mint leaves – optional
Strawberries
Remove from heat add vanilla extract
and firm gelatin mixture. Whisk until
well combined.
More than delicious, when it comes to
disease prevention, these babies pack
a serious punch. Not only do eight
strawberries contain more vitamin C
than an orange, they are antioxidant
powerhouses. Whether you want to
evade heart disease, arthritis, memory
loss, wrinkling, or cancer, these berries
have proven their ability to help. Plus,
they’re just so easy to get into your diet on
a regular basis.
Into a heavy bottom pan add cream
and sugar. Heat over medium heat
whisking until well combined. Allow to
cook until bubbles start to form around
the edges just prior to boiling.
WHILE cream is cooking. Into a small
ramekin add cold water and sprinkle
gelatin packet on top. Set aside.
Equally divide mixture between
5 - 160ml jars. Transfer to refrigerator
to set for a minimum of 2 hours.
Prior to serving, reserve 6 whole
raspberries for garnish and place
remaining berries into blender (or mini
food processor) and pulse until pureed.
Strain mixture through a small sieve.
Discard seeds.
Top panna cotta with raspberry puree
and optional mint and garnish whith
whole raspberries.

USA Baseball
I was selected to play for Sydney by the New
South Wales Junior Baseball League to play in
the international boy’s baseball tournament
held in St Louis from the 1st of August to the
14th of August.
Our trip started by flying to Dallas which took
about 12 hours. Then we took the next flight
to St Louis which was about 3 hours. We
were all tired by the time we got to St Louis.
The first day of the competition we had
the opening ceremony of the tournament
where all the teams walked the field and each
national anthem was played.
In America we played 8 games against 2
Japanese teams, 4 American teams and 1
European team.
We only won 1 game, but the USA teams
and Japanese were very good.
I stayed with a family with 1 other Australian
and 3 Europeans.
We were there for 12 days and played almost
everyday. On days that we didn’t play we
went to places like Dicks sporting goods,
Johny Macs sporting goods, six flags which is
a theme park and sometimes went to watch
other teams play.
16 THE BURST www.kingsgroversl.com.au
We had a tour of Busch Stadium. Busch
Stadium is the home ground of the cardinals,
we got to walk around the field and go up
into the private boxes. Then we watched
a major league baseball game. We saw the
St Louis Cardinals against the Los Angeles
Dodgers. The Cardinals won.
Before we watched the major league game,
we went and had a tour of the St Louis Arch.
It’s a really tall monument which will sway on
a windy day. You can see the whole city from
the Arch.
On the second last day we had the closing
ceremony, we walked the field again and
the Japanese did a traditional dance. All the
awards were handed out then we went back
to our house for the final night.
The next day we went on a flight at 1 o’clock
to LAX which took about 4 hours then an 11
hour flight back to Sydney.
America is really good and I would like to go
back again.
I would like to thank Kingsgrove RSL for the
assistance they gave me with a donation so I
could go on this great adventure.

Sports Administrator’s Report
Wow! Where has the year 2013 gone? Here we are nearly in
November and Santa Clause is preparing for his yearly visit. All of
the Sporting Clubs have completed their annual Championships,
and are awaiting eagerly for the end of year Christmas parties and
presentations.
I won’t spoil the nominating of the actual Sporting Club Champions
at this stage, but they know who they are. They will all be revealed at
the Stars Tribute at the end of the year. There are some surprises this
year, where the mighty have fallen, and the underdog has come from
behind to win on the day.
I know that there was some really hard fought games and matches
this year amongst the competitors with not too much blood - letting.
All were very friendly and the winners and losers are still talking to
each other.
The Round Robin Competition between the five Sporting Clubs was
also extremely competitive with some very close fought encounters.
This competition is held by each of the Clubs playing each other in
their respective sport. In some cases it shows that there is a few very
clever and talented sportspersons in our RSL Club.
May I at this stage, thank the Directors, Management and staff for
their support over the year towards the Sporting Clubs. On their
behalf I wish them and the members of Kingsgrove RSL Club all the
very best for Christmas, and please be safe over the holiday period.
To all the Sporting Club’s members, remember, Golfers “Keep your
head down and follow through”, Fishos’ “A live worm is better than a
dead prawn”, Darties’ “A little Bull may be your downfall”, Snooker “A
miss spent youth will always come out”. And the Indoor Bowls “A mat
can always be used for something else”.
Have a great Christmas

WE WON

WE WON
What a way to start my report. Yes the C Grade darts
competition team won the Grand Final. It was very exciting. Two
of the ladies in the team won an extra trophy for having won the
most games during the competition. Only three awards were
given for this in C Grade and our team won two of them. We are
very proud. Because we won the C Grade we have been put up
to B Grade for the next competition. We are not winning, but
even though we have not won many games we have not lost too
many games by a big number of points. We are all enjoying the
experience.
Our Championships were held in August and we have a new club
champion in George Megisidis. Our female champion is Olidia
Viglino and our male champion is Harry Langstaff. This day went
well with morning tea provided and a club voucher given to each
member playing. Congratulations to all winners.
Our social darts are held every Friday night at 7.30pm in the
Sports Bar. Everyone is welcome so if you are interested please
come down and see us. We have fun nights throughout the year
and lucky door prizes every month. Our last night for this year is
29th November 2013 and in the New Year we will start back on
Friday 17th January 2014.
Our Christmas Party is coming up on Saturday 14th December
2013 and we always have fun at this event. There are raffles,
awards and trophies given to members on the night. Beware
there will also be a few surprises.
Don’t forget our Stars Tribute – on Saturday 7th December 2013
when all the sporting champions receive their awards. This is
a good night and I hope to see you at this function. In closing I
would like to wish everyone including, the Board of Directors,
Management and Staff, Angus and Tommy, a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year and to thank everyone for their help
throughout 2013.

The Womens Auxiliary has had some
wonderful outings this year. A bus trip
to Albion Park Womens Auxiliary in July
followed by the Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch
VP Day Luncheon, then another lovely bus
trip to Wollongong for lunch.
We also had an enjoyable bus trip to Fairfield
RSL Club. The bus trips are a great way to
get around which also saves so many cars
attending.
We are looking forward to the bus trips to
come in the near future.

Important Snooker Dates:
We have been fortunate to attend most of
our scheduled Shoalhaven Heads, Botany
Bay, Port Hacking, Sydney Harbour and Port
Kembla outings through the year. On average,
6 boats and 25 participants have attended.
Some good sized luderick have been caught
from local wharves and an abundance of
flathead and leatherjackets found in rivers.
Outside fisho’s have regularly landed large
kilos of fish - species including Kingfish,
Morwong, Leatherjackets, Groper, Flathead,
Pigfish and Goatfish.
The last Friday night Snooker competition will
be held on Friday13th December 2013.
Competition is fierce and a couple of members
are in contention to be declared the overall
winner so the final outing in November at
Shoalhaven Heads will be hard fought. The club
champion will receive their award at the Stars
Tribute night on Saturday 7th December.
Our end of year fishing presentation will be
held 12m.d. on 24th November. To assist
with catering interested participants should
contact the organiser, Graham Evans. Fishing
members wanting to attend the Stars Tribute
night are asked to contact the committee
at the Presentation Day, so seating can be
booked.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held
Tuesday 3rd December, 2013 at 6.30pm. All
fishing club members are encouraged to attend.
On behalf of the fishing club, I would like
to thank Ian Todd, Debbie Harris, KRSL
Managers and staff for all the assistance given
to us throughout the year. I would also like
to take this opportunity to wish all KRSL
members a very Happy Christmas and a safe
and healthy 2014.

to me that as you get older the years just fly
by, you look back and say to yourself where

then it dawns on you oh yea I played golf ,
fished, had holidays spent time with the family,
raised kids, spent a fortune on watching them

Sub-Branch President’s Report
As we near year’s end, I ask that you spare a
thought and a prayer for all those Australian
Service men and women who are serving
overseas and will be away from their families
for Christmas and New Year festivities and that
they will return home safely in the New Year.
We had a very successful VP Day Remembrance
Service on the 11th August with the Cadets from
TS Sirius and the 233 St George Regional Cadet
Unit making up the Catafalque Party and Guard.
The VP Day Address was given by LTCOL
Schon Condon KCFJ RFD. Our thanks to Schon
and his wife Debbie who regularly attend
our Commemoration Services.
Our Remembrance Day Service and
luncheon will be held on the 10th
November, we will be having the
Commemoration Service at 10.45am with
the Cadets from TS Sirius and the 233 St
George Regional Cadet Unit, along with the
the Sutherland Shire Silver Band who will
also entertain us at the luncheon, so please
ensure you book your seats early. I would
ask that you attend the Service and not just
come for the luncheon. Medals are to be
worn on the day.
Winter is never a good time for our Sub
Branch members as shown by the number
of names listed in the Lest We Forget section
of this copy of the Burst, we pass on our
condolences to the family and friends of those
listed. I would like to thank those Sub-Branch
members who gave up their time to attend the
funerals of the Sub Branch member’s, I know
it is very much appreciated by the deceased’s
Community
The NSW RSL lost one of their most revered
members with the passing of the Past State
President Godfrey Eugene “Rusty” Priest
AM on the 25th September, a State Funeral
was held at St Mary’s Cathedral on the 2nd
October, Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch was
represented as was most other Sub Branches.
It was a very moving service, with a number
of dignitaries speaking highly of Rusty’s
work for the ex service men and women of
Australia. Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie
AC DSC DSC CSM (Rtd) read a poem
entitled “It is the Soldier”, as never a truer
word has been written I have reproduced the
poem at the end of my report.
On behalf of the Sub Branch Committee and
members I would like to extend Best Wishes
for Christmas and the New Year to the Board
of Directors and their families, also to the Club
General Manager Ian Todd, the Management
Team and the very hard working staff of the
club who do such a great job looking after the
Sub-Branch Members during the year.
To the Sub-Branch Executive, Committee,
Sub-Branch Members, the Women’s
Auxiliary and their families may you all have a
Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy and
Prosperous New Year.

freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer who
has given us the freedom to protest
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer who has given
us the right to a fair trial
It is the Soldier, not the politician who has
given us the right to vote
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who

Group
As we head into the Christmas season the
ladies are busy getting presents ready for the
three nursing homes that we attend. There
are around 300 residents that the group will
organise presents for this year.
In November it is the Clubs annual fete and
we will be having a stall on this day. We are
collecting goodies for this stall and again the
ladies are busy endeavouring to come up
with new ideas for our stall. We hope that
the members will come along and have a
look at what we have and you never know,
there may be something that grabs your
attention. All the money we raise goes to
help the residents of the nursing homes and
lets us bring some of them down to our
Club for a morning tea/lunch during the year.
We usually have three morning tea/lunches
through the year and the last one we had
was in August. Unfortunately we only had
the seniors from the Kingsgrove Community

family and friends.
Aid Centre on this occasion but what a day
we had. Everyone was enjoying themselves
and each one received a scarf and hat. Food
and bingo was excellent and some people
went home with more than one gift. Many
laughs were had by all attending. Our next
morning tea/lunch will be held in November.
This one will have a Christmas Theme for
the residents of the nursing homes and the
seniors from the Kingsgrove Community Aid
Centre. I am sure they will enjoy the day.
The group would like to thank all the people
that have donated wool and other items
to us. It is very much appreciated and will
certainly be used, if not today, tomorrow.
We would also like to thank everyone who
has ordered with us. The bears have been
very popular and have kept Lillian and Karen
very busy. I think they must dream about
them, they have done so many.
Christmas and a Happy New Year. We
would also like to thank the Board of
Directors, Management and Staff, Angus and
Staff for their support throughout the year.
Without them we could not help seniors in
the community.
We would like to wish everyone a Merry
Lynda Lake
