44 AROUND ICELAND 428 Swimming pool 428 Camping 428 Accommodation symbols numbers refer to facility lists: west iceland Snæfellsjökull, Hellnar. Borgarfjörður begins on the northern side of Hvalfjörður and extends to the glacial river Hvítá (White River). This is a fertile agricultural district with intense geothermal activity, which is also harnessed for greenhouse cultivation. Its landscapes are a fascinating combination of diverse lava formations and soft contours, and were the setting for many great historical events both in the Saga Age and later. The lowland plains gradually give way to more rugged scenery, and four valleys stretch inland to border on glaciers and the Highlands. Woodlands occur in a number of places, the largest at Húsafellsskógur and Vatnaskógur. Basalt is the main rock type, but dolerite, palagonite and rhyolite are also found. Rivers and lakes typify much of the landscape, and are good for fishing. Mýrar is the district extending north and west of Borgarfjörður onto the Snæfellsnes peninsula. With low tides and many skerries, its shore is dangerous for ships, but all the more tranquil for travellers and birds. Most of the landscape is lowland, typified by lakes and ponds, with shrubland on the rocky hillocks. There is fertile vegetation extending well up from the lowlands to the heaths, and sheep farming is the main activity. Sharp valleys extend from the lowlands into the steep mountains and bluffs that form a backdrop. Salmon is found in all the rivers and many lakes are inhabited by trout. The rock type is largely basalt, with some palagonite and rhyolite. Lava covers much of the surface, the resulting product of several central volcanoes, and there is considerable geothermal activity in the uplands too. Snæfellsnes and Hnappadalur form the peninsula visible from Reykjavík on the far side of Faxaflói bay, which appears as a jagged ridge of mountains capped by the mystical Snæfellsjökull glacier, sitting on top of a dormant volcano. Its northern shore overlooks the islands and skerries of Breiðafjörður bay in the direction of the West Fjords: soft and rugged by turns, tempting but inspiring awe for their contrast of the vast and the tiny. Snæfellsnes has largely coastal landscape, apart from the jagged mountain ridge that divides it, and is decorated with bizarre natural lava formations and alive with folklore - and with bird colonies. Much of the southern shore is sandy with few bays. Steep cliffs begin near Búðir and around the peninsula to Hellissandur, where lava has flowed into the sea. There are not many rivers on the peninsula, but good fishing is to be had in them. The main rock type on the peninsula is tertiary basalt, but Ice Age palagonite and dolerite are also found in many places, together with rhyolite and various types of plutonic rock. Testifying to the way that the land has risen from the sea, interesting shell strata occur at various sites, and Ice Age plant fossils have also been recorded. Dalir, with its rolling valleys heading inland and its narrow shoreline, is the “last outpost” of West Iceland before the massive landforms of the north and the West Fjords take over. The coast has few bays and harbours, and offshore lie many skerries and islands at the shallow head of Breiðafjörður on Skógarströnd, which Dalir skirts across the mountains to Gilsfjörður. Rhyolite occurs in the district’s three central volcanoes, which all date from before the Holocene epoch. There is some geothermal activity at their perimeters, most noticeably at Sælingsdalur and Reykjadalur. Lignite, testifying to ancient forests, is found on Skarðsströnd, and was even mined there for a period. There is considerable vegetation in the district, and the islands offshore abound in bird colonies and seals. Farming and processing of agricultural products are the main local activities, along with some industry, services and commerce. - KJÓS Kjósin is a thriving farming county south of Hvalfjörður fjord, stretching from Mt. Esja in the south, up north to the innermost part of the fjord. The word Kjós means valley. Laxá í Kjós, one of Iceland’s best salmon fishing rivers, flows from Stíflisdalsvatn lake at Laxárdalur to the sea in Hvalfjörður fjord. In the middle of the county is Meðalfell, an ancient manor farm, and through it runs Bugða river, which joins with Laxá river.Travel services are operated at several farms in Kjós. A variety of leisure activities are offered for the entire family in Kjós. There is a a pet cementary at Hurðarbak. The Félagsgarður Community Centre is situated at Hvalfjarðarvegur road by Laxá river. It has good facilities for family gatherings and private parties such as weddings, birthdays, etc. At Vindáshlíð you’ll find a Christian summer camp for girls. Population 220. z Notable attractions in Kjós include: Hvalfjarðareyri spit in Hvalfjörður fjord, which teems with bird life, Maríuhöfn harbour í Laxvogi, believed to be one of the oldest in the country, Laxfoss and Þórufoss waterfalls on Laxá river, Staupasteinn in Hvalfjörður, and Glymur in Botnsá river, Iceland’s highest waterfall. You’ll find plenty of walking paths in the area, such as a church path from Reynivellir to Fossá river, over Svínaskarð gorge and along Meðalfell mountain. At Ásgarður in Kjósarstofa a new information centre has been opened.A hiking map and map of the road around Hvalfjörður fjord is available at Kjósarstofa and Café Kjós. z Maríuhöfn in Laxárvogur was one of the major trading posts in Iceland until the 15th century. The ships of the Skálholt bishopric sailed there, as the harbour was favourably situated for connections to Þingvellir and upper Árnessýsla district. This is where the Black Death pandemic first came to Iceland in 1402. About a third of Iceland’s population is believed to have perished as a result. Its geography is diverse, with a fair amount of lowland but also steep mountains of lovely shapes and shores cut with bays that are teeming with life. A great deal of natural beauty exists, as do innumerable opportunities for enjoying excellent outdoor activities, so near the capital. History, dating all the way back to the settlement, may be found at every turn in Hvalfjarðarsveit district, in addition to a fascinating geological history, dating back to the end of the ice age. Population 627. z Glymur, Iceland’s tallest waterfall, is located in Botnsdalur valley, Hvalfjörður. Leading up to it is a fabulous hiking path that should only be attempted by those not daunted by heights or challenging hikes. Glymur is in the river Botnsá that runs out of Hvalvatn, which is a lake closed by molten lava, some 160 metres deep. At the bottom of Hvalfjörður fjord are the towering Hval- Ferns The Snæfellsnes National Park and the Búðahraun lava field are rich of fissures with large ferns, both Mail-fern, Lady-fern and Northern Buckler-fern that find shelter in the fissures. In some of them even Herb-paris may be found, which is protected by law. Common Dog-violet and Sundew are both more frequent in Snæfellsnes and Mýrar-District than elsewhere in the country. Hot springs are widely distributed in the Borgarfjörður District, both in Kleppjárnsreykir, Deildartunga and Reykholt. Several species characteristic for thermal soils are seen here, like Marsh Pennywort, Marsh Cudweed and a thermal variety of Hard Fern endemic in Iceland. 46 AROUND ICELAND Botnsúlur. fell, a table mountain (852 m), and Botnssúlur, (1095 m). Above the whale-cutting station in Hvalfjörður is the oldest stone bridge in Iceland, Bláskeggsárbrú, that is more than 100 years old. It can be accessed via a pleasant hiking and riding path. Hvalfjörður fjord was the site of much activity by the British and US militaries during World War II. Hvalfjarðarsveit has a number of pleasant hiking paths and many opportunities for outdoor activities: Leggjabrjótur. This ancient route leads from Botnsdalur and Brynjudalur valleys over a long and rocky mount, called Leggjabrjótur (467m), over to Þingvellir. The route across Leggjabrjótur, which was previously a busy travel path, has now been cleared and pieces of cairns are visible along the way. After crossing the mount, on reaching Öxarárdalur valley, the route runs past Svartagil ravine and down to Almannagjá at Þingvellir. This hike takes 5-7 hours. Facilities in Hvalfjörður Information: www.hvalfjordur.is Accommodation: 302. Bjarteyjarsandur, 433-8851/862-1751, www.bjarteyjarsandur.is 304. There is also a statue, which shows Egill carrying home his dead son. In Reykholtsdalur, a geothermal field including Deildartunguhver, which yields 180 l/sec. of 97° C hot water and is the most productive spring in Iceland. Most of the water used for central heating in Akranes and Borgarnes is taken from Deildartunguhver. The shrub “hard fern” grows by the spring, but nowhere else in Iceland. z Arnarvatnsheiði. Extensive heathland (400-600 m north and west of the Eiríksjökull and Langjökull glaciers. Drumlins have created rolling hills where marshes and gravel ridges alternate. The area is covered with numerous lakes of all sizes, most of which have fish in them, and it is also renowned for its bird life. This was the territory of outlaws in days of old, as mentioned in the Saga of Grettir the Strong. z Hraunfossar. Waterfall series pouring over the side of Hvítá river canyon from beneath Hallmundarhraun lava field along a 1 km stretch. Just upstream is beautiful Barnafoss (Children’s Falls). z Grábrókarhraun. The glaciers Eiríksjökull and Ok underline beautifully the contrast between the vegetation of this “oasis” and the desolate wilderness beyond it. Húsafell was once the benefice of the Reverend Snorri Björnsson (1710-1803), who features in many folktales for his physical strength and skills at disposing of ghosts. He is said to have lifted the stone which can still be seen there, called Kvíahella (180 kg). Primitivist artist Páll Gudmundsson has made sculptures from local rocks, which are on exhibit outdoors, and has piled up a “Ghost Memorial.” z Hallmundarhraun. Large lava field, named after a local cave-dwelling giant in the Saga of Grettir the Strong. The lava flowed from the north-western rim of Langjökull glacier, and entered Hvítá river. There are many caves in the lava field, including the three largest in Iceland: Surtshellir, Stefánshellir and Víðgelmir, which is actually the largest lava cave in the world at 1,460 m in length. Víðgelmir cave, 2 km from Fljótstunga at Hvítársíða, is one of the largest caves in the world in volume. valley, grown with moss, heather and shrubs in many places. The lava flowed from the distinctive Grábrókargígar scoria cones on the north side of the main road and is thought to be 2-3000 years old. Mt. Grábrók can be ascended by a marked trail. z The Bifröst University Village is a village of 500-600 people connected to the University. It has a café, a shop, a restaurant, summerhouses and hiking trails. z Borg. Historical site, now a church and parsonage but originally the home of Skallagrímur, the first inhabitant of Borgarfjörður and father of Egill, hero of Egill’s Saga. A sculpture at Borg by Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982) commemorates Egill’s poem, Loss of his Sons. Húsafell. It is a cultural centre, church centre and vicarage. The area is most famous for being the home of Snorri Sturluson (1178-1241) during the years 1206-1241. Snorri is Iceland’s best-known author, poet and scholar. There is considerable geothermal water in Reykholt, and an ancient thermal pool is named after him - Snorralaug, where research is currently being conducted. Snorri is believed to be buried in the local churchyard. Snorrastofa is intended to advance research and help promote interest in medieval studies, and the history of Reykholt and Borgarfjörður. It also provides tourists with services and participates in concerts at Reykholtskirkja church. The Reykholt Festival is held annually, this year July 27-29. The boundaries of the municipality are in Staðarsveit, just west of Vegamót, on the one hand, and to the north at Búlandshöfði, on the other. The majority of residents live in the towns of Ólafsvík, Rif and Hellissandur, while others are divided amongst the rural areas as well as smaller residential areas of Hellnar and Arnarstapi. The municipality contains expansive undeveloped regions that provide easy access to unspoiled nature. A road circles Snæfellsbær. Those who come driving from Reykjavík along road 54 can choose to drive over the heath due north, and from there to circle the glacier, or to drive along Útnesvegur along road 574 in a circle to the north. The Snæfellsjökull glacier therefore forms a sort of centre to the municipality, which can be seen from afar. Population 1,737. z Búðahraun. Lava field on the south shore of Snæfell- snes peninsula, originating from the low Búðaklettur crater (88 m) in its centre. The lava is rough with tiny fissures where 11 of the 16 types of fern known in Iceland have been found. Since olden times the field has been a main travel route in the area, as shown by its many named tracks. An old timber church is in the lava field at Búðir, along with an old trading post previously housing a hotel. This 140-year-old hotel burned down in February 2001. A new hotel has been built there. The sand is yellow, which is rare in Iceland. z Snæfellsjökull. The majestic and mystical glacier which glistens like a beacon at the end of Snæfellsnes, the setting for Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The glacier has a dormant volcanic cone with three pronged covers (1446 m.) and a 200 m crater. Three eruptions have taken place under the glacier in the past 10,000 years, the last around AD 300. Snæfellsjökull was first climbed in 1754; today, many travellers walk to the top or go there by snowmobile. The majesty and power of Snæfellsjökull have been material for such world-famous authors as Jules Verne and Halldór Laxness. A road up to the Snæfellsjökull glacier, just south of Gufuskáli, runs along Móðulækur through Eysteinsdalur, to the foot of the glacier. It is easily passable for all vehicles. z Þúfubjarg and Lóndrangar. Þúfubjarg is a large cliff of stratified palagonite on the Snæfellsnes coast, a relic of a submarine eruption like the one that produced the island of Surtsey. Lóndrangar is the name of two rockstacks (75 m and 61 m) to its west, probably volcanic plugs left behind from the same eruption. They were first scaled in 1753. Lóndrangar was an old fishing centre and remains of camps can still be seen there. The lava area above was used to dry fish. z Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík. Peculiar rock formations are found on the shore at Djúpalónssandur on south Snæfellsnes, along with four rocks on which people tried their strength in the days of the fishing station: Fullsterkur (Strong, 154 kg), Hálfsterkur (Half-strong, 100 kg), Hálfdrættingur (Half-as-good, 54 kg) and Amlóði (Lightweight, 23 kg). For centuries one of the largest seasonal fishing stations in Iceland was near Dritvík, but all that now remains are some ruins at the foot of the cliff. z Öndverðarnes. The westernmost point of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. A symmetrical well with 17 stone steps is the only place in the area where fresh water is found. To the south are the huge black cliffs of Svörtuloft, a magnificent place for watching the waves break. There are lighthouses at both these places. z Skarðsvík. An inlet surrounded by cliffs, with white sand. A paved road leads to the inlet. A very popular spot. 60 AROUND ICELAND SnæfellSbær welcome to SnæfellSbær 1. About 1 km west of Djúpalónssandur is Dritvík, reached by walking along the cliff edge and the grassy headland of Barðinn. Dritvík is a bay enclosed by rocks and cliffs. Two cliff faces jut out into the sea to form a natural landing place for boats between them. At one time Dritvík was one of the largest fishing centres in Iceland, with up to 600 seasonal workers living there. A path winds due north from Dritvík out through the lava field, and reaches the road just east of Hólahólar. SNÆFELLSBÆR - Facilities in the vicinity Accommodation: 367. Gh. On the road to Öndverðarnes, just west of Skarðsvík, is a parking spot with a signpost marked to Vatnsborg, Neshólar and Grashólahellir. A marked path leads to Vatnsborg, a deep volcanic crater which is impossible to climb into in late summer: the bottom of it becomes covered with thick fern. A number of interesting walks can be made from Vatnsborg. One is to proceed to the Neshólar hill swarm for a look at Grashólahellir, a cave in Grashóll, the westernmost of the hills. Beautiful lava paths lead down from there and towards Öldungahóll hill, which is the route to Saxhólsbjarg cliff and the lighthouse at Skálasnagi. The cliffs abound with bird life throughout the summer. Numerous other walking trails with unique natural phenomena can be explored all around the area. Arnarstapi is a small fishing community with a growing colony of summer cottages. The shore is both beautiful and striking. An extremely unusual rock formation, Gatklettur, is on the west side of the shore. Hellnar is about three km west of Arnarstapi. It was once one of the main fishing centres on Snæfellsnes peninsula. Uniquely beautiful rock formations are found along the shoreline. Baðstofa, a large cave in Valasnös cliff, is renowned for its peculiar light and hues. The shores along Arnarstapi and Hellnar are protected. Tourist services at these two places have been growing rapidly in recent years, not least of all among those who believe in the magical powers of Snæfellsjökull glacier. z Snæfellsjökull Glacier National Park was estab- Facilities at Arnarstapi lished on 28 June 2001, and is about 170 km2 in area. The Park covers the westernmost part of Snæfellsness, from the eastern fringe of Háahraun in the south to the easternmost boundary of Gufuskálaland in the north. The glacier is within the Park. There are exceptionally beautiful lava formations in the park, along with magnificent coastline and notable historical sites in connection with fishing from days long gone. Towering above all this is the king of Icelandic mountains, Snæfellsjökull, an active volcano that has developed from numerous eruptions. Some feel the energy emanating from the glacier, which is believed to be one of the seven most powerful volcanic centres in the world. There are no campsites located in the park itself, but there are some just outside both in the south and north. A variety of accommodation is available in the vicinity. The national park has a visitors’ centre at Hellnar, where there is a lively and educational exhibition aimed at all age groups. Information about walking trails is included in the Park’s brochure available from the park ranger. Short, tours guided by the ranger are offered. Accommodation: 373. Snjófell, 435-6783. Its geology is unusual and varied with an extinct volcanic zone running through the middle of it.The climate in Grundarfjörður is known for its periods of excellent weather dotted with the famous strong winds from the south. The Saga of Eyrbyggjar is named after the area which used to be called Eyrarsveit. This name came from the Öndverðareyri sandbank where you can still see the ruins of a Viking lodge from the time of settlement. In past centuries Grundarfjörður has played a fundamental role in the country’s fishing industry because of its location in the middle of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and its particularly good natural harbour. The first foreign salt fish (bacalao) producers based themselves in Grundarfjörður--French boat owner Sylvain Allenou. French fishermen lived for a while at Grundarkampur. The important past history of the French in Grundarfjörður has led to the town’s pairing with the French town of Paimpol. Although Grundarfjörður bases its economy on fishing, you will be able to find a variety of leisure activities, guesthouses, organized sightseeing trips, shopping and other services. Cultural and social life flourishes in Grundarfjörður and music plays an important role in the life of the townspeople. In Grundarfjörður the visitor finds a good balance between nature and culture. Population 899. Walking paths. Kirkjufell. The symbol of Grundarfjörður, rising 463 metres above sea level. It is believed by many to be the most beautiful mountain in Iceland. When climbing it one should always be accompanied by an experienced mountain guide. You can hike around the base of the mountain, a path that offers amazing views and varied bird life. This hike is perfect for families, and takes around three hours at a leisurely pace. It has an excellent natural harbour, sheltered by Súgandiseyja island which has now been linked to the mainland. Iceland’s oldest meteorological station some say the world’s oldest - is in Stykkishólmur, and was first manned by Árni Thorlacius in 1845. In 1828 Árni built the timber “Norwegian House,” which has been renovated and now houses the local folk museum. There are many old houses in town that have been repaired and that give the town a certain distinction. Stykkishólmskirkja church is considered a fine concert hall, and in summer performances are regularly held. There is a swimming pool, and the water is certified as particularly wholesome. Birdlife is varied in and around the town and in recent years tourism and commerce has blossomed. The inhabitants of Flateyri island get their supplies here. There are plenty of arts and crafts galleries and restaurants in Stykkishólmur. Population 1,108. z Helgafell (Holy Mountain, 73 m) features recurrently in Icelandic history - and in folklore. Many famous Icelanders have lived here, for example Ari Fróði (1067-1148) who wrote the book of Icelanders, and Saga heroine Guðrun Ósvífursdóttir. You can see her grave in the field. An Augustine monastery was moved there from the island of Flatey in 1184, and remnants of a wall on the hill are said to be from its chapel. The manuscripts written there are housed at Árnasetur in Reykjavík. There is a viewing dial at the top, and a panoramic view across the islands of Breiðafjörður Bay. z Álftafjörður and Skógarströnd. Álftafjörður is the easternmost fjord cut into the north-western part of Snæfellsnes, with the mountains Úlfarsfell to the west and Narfeyjarfjall to the east. East of that is Skógarsveit, a beautiful and fertile county. Álftafjörður forms the setting of Eyrbyggja Saga. Helgafell. “Holy Mountain,” a low basalt mountain (73 m) on Þórsnes just outside Stykkishólmur, with a gentle slope to the west but sheer on its northern and eastern sides. A breathtaking panoramic view across Breiðafjörður Bay opens up from the top. A small remnant of a wall on the mountain is said to be the ruin of a chapel dating from the time of the nearby monastery. The mountain was named by Þórólfur Mostrarskegg, who settled this district. The 13th-century Book of Settlements says that he “believed so strongly in the mountain on the headland, which he called Helgafell, that no one was allowed to look at it without washing first, and it was so sacrosanct that nothing was to be killed on it, neither cattle nor men.” Folklore advises anyone climbing the mountain for the first time to start at the grave of Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir (heroine of Laxdæla Saga), north of the church, and neither look back nor speak. People who do so will have three wishes granted, provided they are of good intent, and the wisher tells no one and faces east when making them.
