SYNOPSIS: Kip Duane (Jason Patric), resolves to keep his bounty hunter past behind him and away from his wife and young son Buck (Noah Hardin). Buck is no stranger to his father’s legend and boasts that he is not afraid to shoot a man. Kip warns that the dead are ‘just blood and bones’; it’s the feeling that comes after the killing that ‘takes something from you, sure as the life you took away’. Meanwhile, Espada, (Danny Trejo), the brother of an outlaw hunted down by Kip, arrives with a vendetta and threatens to kill a man every hour until Kip faces him. Uncle Gus (Marc Boone Junior), witnesses Espada’s murdering spree in the saloon and rides to Kip’s homestead to warn him. Charmed by Madam Madeline (Rose McGowen), Espada takes her hostage. Aware of his father’s plans, Buck is troubled when he sees suspicious riders and sneaks into town to warn him. He witnesses the powerful duel as Kip kills Espada and his gang reluctantly, only to be murdered in an ambush. The tragic death of his father in front of him marks Buck forever and sets him on a path of vengeance. 3 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The Weight of Blood and Bones was made in the aftermath of the sudden loss of my father Luc, a French photographer and cinephile. My love of film, creativity, storytelling and my photographic eye stem from his influence. We had a close relationship and the profound emotions from watching him die of lung cancer in front of me haunt me every day. I didn’t set out to make a film about my dad. My plan was to shoot a short prequel to a feature I was adapting from a classic novel written by Zane Grey called The Last of the Duanes, also known as The Lone Star Ranger. I wanted to create a narrative of the hero Buck Duane as a boy, and dramatize the events of his early life. Because of my position as a working cinematographer and founder of a respected production company in Los Angeles, I was able to pull some favors and reach out to some great actors. But never in a million years did I expect to get such a positive response on the script from such a high caliber of talent. Working with outstanding actors such as Jason Patric, Danny Trejo, Rose McGowan and Mark Boone Junior was an experience of a lifetime. Jason, in particular, is an underused talent and a master of nuances. Boone, a true craftsman and authentic western character, has been a great asset, even traveling recently with me to Dallas to support the feature. Working with Noah Hardin on his first narrative was a particular joy. The brave performance he was able to deliver, being so new to the game, and surrounded by seasoned stars, makes me very proud. He is the true protagonist in this film and he is able to hit all the notes for the story. Rose McGowan is a gem and her performance adds a bit of levity to an otherwise dramatic piece. I would have never imagined being able to cast a movie and TV star of her status in the role of Madeline. She looked stunning in her long red velvet gown and didn’t complain in the 105 degree heat. We shot most of the film in Santa Clarita on the old Deadwood set in August as well as in Simi Valley. Working with veteran cinematographer Nancy Schreiber, ASC, was a great pleasure. Her experience, professionalism and talent were all essential components to getting the number of magnificent shots for me to work with. In fact there are several amazing shots that I had to painstakingly cut out of the film, even though they were so beautiful. I fought hard to keep them in but my talented editor, who was in my 2005 graduating class at AFI, wisely convinced me that they were not necessary to the essential story of the film. I am honored to present The Weight of Blood and Bones to the world. It has been a long and cathartic journey. Though with the feature clear in my sights I have more roads to travel... and loving every minute of it! 4 PRINCIPAL CAST JASON PATRIC as KIP DUANE Jason Patric is a critically acclaimed actor in American film, television and stage playing diverse roles, such as a strung out cop in Narc.
