When you choose to become a member of the Armory Art Center, your generous support at
any level enables the Armory to continue offering excellence in visual arts educational
programming through exhibitions and studio classes to adults and youth. Membership is
available at various levels. You must be a member to take classes.
The Armory Art Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit.
Tuition fees cover only 60% of the art school’s
operating costs. The other 40% is raised through
grants, fundraisers, and donations; thereby
subsidizing student tuition. The following policies
and measures are in place so we can continue to
serve our mission: “to provide high-quality visual
art school and art gallery services that stimulate
personal self-discovery and generate knowledge
and awareness of art as part of life.” By registering
for any class at the Armory Art Center, students
acknowledge understanding of and agree to the
policies listed below:
CANCELLED OR MISSED COURSES
There will be no make-up classes provided due to
student illness, travel, or other reasons not the
responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students
enrolled in courses which are cancelled by the Armory
due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will
receive a full refund. If a class is cancelled, every effort
will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before
the first class and full tuition will be refunded. The
Armory reserves the right to substitute instructors for
any of its classes at any time.
HOLIDAYS
For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to the teachers
and students to decide whether to hold classes or
schedule a makeup class within the same session.

Department. Open studio time is only available when a
class is not in session in that space. See posted schedules.

only in the department in which the student is registered,
e.g. ceramics studio is available to Ceramics students.

working days before the start of that course OR
once the course has started are NOT eligible for a

failure to attend class.
E
NEW Courses
To accommodate all of the revelers who’ll come to this party, this year it will be held at
The Beach Club in Palm Beach. As always, there will be fantastic collectables and a gourmet
lunch. And, of course an array of phantasmagoric hats, worn by you, the participants! It is
always an experience to remember and lots of fun. Join us!
Visiting Master Artists Workshops continue into March; this is your chance to
experience a short course with a fantastic teachers from across the US.
Several exhibitions open on February 21 and include the works by Huguette Despault
May and Kathleen Elliot. These two artists come to the Armory through the auspices of
Katherine T. Carter and Associates. Large scale drawings are featured in May’s work and
flameworked glass in Elliot’s oeuvre. The Armory Faculty Show also opens that same night.
On March 28, the All Student Showcase features the works of Armory students in all
media. Please check with the Director of Education, Talya Lerman, to participate.
As always, the Armory appreciates the contributions that students make to it. We were
able to build two new kilns last summer, largely with donations from our ceramics students.
Tuition does not cover all our costs and we need to raise about 40% of operating budget
every year. Your help is appreciated. The Armory Art Center is a 501 (c ) (3) non-profit
educational institution.

march - april 2014 season calendar
This exhibition will feature the large scale drawings of Huguette
Despault May and glass sculptural works of Kathleen Elliott. In May’s
Hawser series, a hawser is the rope used to moor large ships, she draws
the massive rope in charcoal, showing its rhythmic braiding and
unraveling into fibrous tendrils, metaphors for the entanglements
experienced as human beings. Kathleen Elliot creates sculptures out of
flameworked glass, using a vocabulary of botanical forms, including
leaves, flowers, fruit and vines. The Huguette Despault May exhibition
was provided by Katharine T. Carter and Associates, a marketing and
public relations firm for artists based in New York.

FIRST AND THIRD TUESDAY
6:30-8:30 PM in the Library
Stimulating conversations with other artists. As
a springboard to each of our explorations,
professional artists from South Florida are invited
to present their work, talk about what influenced
them, and examine the work of influential artists
showing in museums and galleries.
Our discussions cover the gamut of contemporary
art themes, including conceptual, cultural,
socio/political, environmental, race and gender
focused and aesthetic practices, the materials and
techniques used to convey these ideas, and where
we fit into the world of contemporary conceptual
art. They’re an opportunity to explore the practical
side of professional development and the sharing
of useful resources. Salons are organized and led
by Elle Schorr. $10 fee payable at the door.

Level: All
‘Silverpoint’ is a centuries old technique using
silver as the drawing material on a prepared ground.
Beautiful examples of this technique can be seen in
drawings dating back to before the Renaissance.
Silverpoint drawings have a beautiful delicacy that
takes on a warm patina over time. Students will also
have the opportunity to experiment with
‘scratchboard’. This more ‘modern’ illustrative
technique allows for very graphic to very fine marks
by ‘scratching’ though a black ink surface to a clay
ground underneath.

Layered glass painting workshop
This exciting workshop will combine the textures
and intensity of glass paints, frits and enamels with
fusible glass. Students will learn to establish a design
with fine frit and then bring the design to life with
paints and enamels. Barara Winkel is an accomplished
painter, sculptor and has merged her amazing painting
skills into glass work. These techniques are easily
learned and open students to a whole new range of
glass working. Gail Leavitt will add her expertise in the
areas of glass enamels. These techniques involve
multiple firings and the effects of firing schedules will
be discussed as they relate to individual designs.
Different colors of fusible glasses will be used to
enhance a design. You don’t have to be a great artist
to do this-all levels are welcome. Materials will be
included, as special safety precautions must be taken
when using enamels, provided respirators must be
worn. Bring your sketch books, designs and some paint
brushes –we will complete two or three projects
encompassing these exciting techniques! Close toed
shoes are required.

EDigital Camera Open Forum
If you have a Digital Camera that never gets used, or a
camera that never gets set to anything but “full auto” this
is the place to start. Spend some time in a relaxed
atmosphere and ask a pro all the questions you are afraid
to ask.“The only foolish question is the one you never ask”.
All questions will be answered, from the simple to the
complex. Bring your camera and ask away. Any digital
camera from a point and shoot to an interchangeable lens
camera is fine. Even if you just want to be a“fly on the wall”
everyone learns something.

scanner as a camera involves scanning 3D objects such
as flowers, shells, fruit, vegetables, beads, toys, and any
number of found objects. The flat bed scanner
technique is a challenge as it is your camera, your
lighting and your stage all in one. The scanner can
generate extremely high resolution images capturing

scanned image will be imported into Photoshop for
final editing and output. Feel free to bring in any
