Musette Gazette - Arizona Accordion Club
December 2008 Vol. XLV No. IV Presents the Musette Gazette www.azaccordionclub.com RESERVE YOUR SEAT!!!!!!!! ******* AT THE 2009 KICKOFF PLANNING EVENT January 10th ******* See Info on page 6 Guest of Honor at the January Meeting: VLADIMIR MOLLOV! COME AT 5 P.M. FOR HIS WORKSHOP Topic: Playing on tour with a large group of dancers, singers, and musicians. Ask questions about sound-system issues, strange venues, and interfacing the accordion with other instruments. Born on the 13-th of January, 1983, to a family of self-taught wedding musicians, Vladimir was inspired by the sounds of the accordion since early childhood. Even at one-and-ahalf years old he “played” his little accordion alongside his father at a wedding. Throughout his childhood, he studied with some the best teachers in Eastern Europe: Nadejda Nicheva, Peter Marinov, Hristina Danova, and Nedelcho Dimitrov – the latter a laureate of national and international accordion festivals and competitions. At the age of thirteen he participated in an accordion competition in Vladivostok, Russia and placed fourth. At the age of fifteen he placed first in the International Competition for Accordion and Guitar in Asenovgrad, Bulgaria; received fourth place in the World Accordion Competition in Castelfidardo, Italy; placed second in the national accordion competition in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he received a special award for virtuosic performance of folk music. In 2002 he joined the Duquesne University Tamburitzans and, for the four years he was a student in the university, he performed over three hundred and fifty shows with the ensemble. Hear tunes like Tony’s Polka, Cheese & Crackers, and Strawberry Hill. Read about them on page 11. Page 2 The Arizona Accordion Club Next Meeting is January 19th, If you want to perform please Sign in at the Front desk, with Cindy The Menu for January is Stuffed Cabbage, Polish Sausage, Applesauce and Rye Bread Christmas Meeting, December 15, 2008 By Raye Donatella The workshop was presented by Tony Longoria on the button-box accordion. Tony teaches button-box at Ziggie’s, and honored a request by the Arizona Accordion Club to present a workshop for our Christmas meeting, which was especially timely because the December headliner was Joe Kino playing button-box exclusively. Some of the pre-meeting music was a nice variety of Christmas music beautifully played by Ted Lee on the midi-accordion. Then Jean Walls played the balance of the pre-meeting music with more beautiful Christmas songs on the piano. (Wow, Jean – you make that piano sound like Liberace was playing!) What a nice beginning for our December meeting. Next up was the Arizona Accordion Club Ensemble, with Jack Dermody, Jay Stevens, Pete Donatella, Josip Baginac, Chuck Voinivich, Ted Lee, Lester Rossner, Toni Dimond, Jerry Syzmanski, and Jim Winning on drums playing a nice variety of Christmas songs. Toni Dimond really stood out, playing a piano solo, an accordion solo, and then singing her song about “Dominic the Donkey”. Everyone seems to really enjoy the sound our ensemble is getting. All that practice is paying off! Felicia Benguhe read a poem she had written titled “Holy Night”, then followed up by singing “O Holy Night”, accompanied by Jean Walls on the piano. Nice job, ladies. I’m impressed by you ladies who play the piano as beautifully as you play the accordion! Jay Stevens picked up his bass and accompanied our guest from Saskatchewan, Canada, Lawrence Goebel, playing his Roland reedless accordion. Great sounds, gentlemen! SPECIAL GUESTS in January. Our own John Smoltz will introduce you to Bernie Barich of Minnesota. What a story Bernie has: He started playing at about nine or ten years of age. His folks bought him a twelve bass Francini out of Montgomery Wards. Because of a birth injury (urb paralysis) to his right arm and not having the dexterity in his right hand, he turned the accordion over using his left hand on the keyboard and learned to play by ear – playing and singing Slovenian songs with his mother. Over the years, he and his brothers played and became the Barich Brothers Polka Band. He now has only one brother left who plays bass and sings with Bernie, as well as another pal he grew up with who plays the banjo. One of his former students plays the drums. And John Smoltz has even more friends to bring around later in February: Andy Nestor and Joe Fedorchak. How about THEM apples! Bernie Barich playing treble with the LEFT HAND!—> The Arizona Accordion Club Page 7 Page 8 The Arizona Accordion Club Come Hear Us Play ! He is a fine, talented accordionist who demonstrates excellent musicianship. I loved his presentation and the selections. You see, Jack, Murl spends a time (or two) surveying the crowd to figure out what the folks want to hear. He plays to the crowd and he entertains the crowd (I must admit sometimes he keeps you guessing). He has the tools in his pocket and, if he wants to, he will use them. Murl demonstrates great versatility; he can play your artistic classical gas but, more importantly, he has transcended the ordinary studies and plays his personality. It shows: we heard the real Murl Sanders when he stands up—and he is a “damn good musician and entertainer.” I only wish that some of our younger players could latch on to some of the broader concepts which he represents, e.g., giving us a glimpse into the real artist. His repertoire is extremely versatile. There is no crutch present here--he doesn’t “hide” behind the music like some other players. He is confident. He sings a song or two and, if you like it, ok; if not, ok, but he takes right off and goes right on to another which may or may not hit your fancy. All said and done, I enjoyed Murl, his playing, personality, etc., AND it takes a lot of savvy to not hide behind the music sheets. Please invite him again. The preceding night had been so cold that we all showed up in garb for a February in Minnesota. We quickly warmed both ourselves and the onlookers with the music we play best. We had a guest accordionist, Rick Dimond, the son of our own Toni Dimond. You should have heard his Beer Barrel Polka riff in the final chorus. REHEARSAL RESTARTS THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 6:30PM At the Holiday Spa. We have five rehearsals left before our visit to San Diego on Sunday, February 8. Don’t miss a single one, if at all possible. If you want to join the Ensemble be sure to show up on any Thursday evening. Playing for Light Rail in Tempe TWO TRACKS IN 2009 The Ensemble wants to offer programs for two types of members. 1) Committed members who show up every week, practice enthusiastically, and participate in concerts and competitions. 2) Players who want to play light fare, to jam – in a word, to have plenty of fun without needing to commit to a disciplined program. Our practice venue has a couple of rooms to break off into the two types of programs. From time to time, the two groups will merge for shared music and fun. WANT TO JOIN? Show up at any Thursday rehearsal. For info, call Jack Dermody at (602) 237-5627. They both had an edge in the music field having professional musicians for parents. Linda's father played saxophone and half-chromatic accordion for the Frankie Kramer band in the 1960s and 1970s and after they disbanded, played with various other groups over the next 20 years. Frank's mother had her own band and also played piano accordion with the Mary Bass orchestra. Cleveland's Polka King, Johnny Vadnal, recorded one of Mrs. Moravick’s original polkas. She is still an active accordion teacher today. Having had this influence it is no surprise that both Linda and Frank head up their own bands today. In addition to leading The Frank Moravcik Band, Frank has had the opportunity to perform with popular bands such as America’s Polka King, Frank Yankovic, and Canada’s Polka King, Walter Ostanek. Frank’s band has released three albums to date. Linda’s band is called Magic Buttons and they have also produced three albums and been together for 14 years. Linda and Frank have appeared together on the television show "Polka, Polka, Polka" and Linda has performed on The Jimmy Sturr show. Throughout the last 20 years, they have both hosted many polka tours and cruises to various destinations. Frank has hosted his own polka radio programs on local radio as well as on the Internet. Linda also hosted a popular Internet show featuring button accordion music for five years. Frank plays the piano accordion and Linda plays the diatonic accordion, or as it’s commonly referred to in their hometown, the button box. Both of their bands are well received by the audiences wherever they perform. They also occasionally perform duos together for smaller venues. Frank and Linda both have received numerous awards and nominations from the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and currently serve on the Board of Directors as Trustees. Besides their obvious love of music, they have much in common having come from the same background making their chemistry apparent on stage. Polka and accordion music is their passion and they love sharing their music and energy with audiences everywhere! I did recognize “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells”. Great fun and great listening! Thanks, Kino Family. We loved it! And now, another treat. Miro Baginac on bass, Josip Baginac on the Tamboritza Prim, Carlo Barbaric on the Brac, Stanko Zouko on the Bugarija, and Jay Stevens on bass played “O Come All Ye Faithful and “Silent Night”. Chuck Voinivich played and sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and “O Holy Night”, then was joined by his houseguest from San Francisco, Lou DiMaggio for a duet on “Girl From Ipanema”. Then Lou went on to play solo on “China Boy” and “Tico Tico”. I’ll bet you two have fun jamming! Nice work! As the evening was coming to an end, Joan Monti on accordion, with Jim Winning on drums and Jay Stevens on bass did “Blue Christmas” with Jim on vocals, Stardust, and Jim singing “Jingle Bell Rock”. It’s always a pleasure to hear you folks. Rosemary Smith did a great job of playing “Let It Snow”, “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Rocking Around The Christmas Tree”. She was followed by Paul Betkin playing “Suzy Snowflake/Have a Merry Christmas”, then joined Pete Donatella and Jay Stevens on bass for a rousing “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and “White Christmas”. All in all, a very Merry Christmas meeting. I wish all of you a great 2009.
