Plainview Jewish Center is Mark's second home. He is currently a trustee on the Temple Board of
Directors. He has served not only as Men's Club President, but also as First, Second and Third Vice President. In
addition, Mark has served in the capacity of treasurer, youth chairman, and nominating committee chairman. He
graciously offers to be woken up any morning if he is needed for the minyan. Furthermore, Mark always
participates in the Men's Club Patio Players Productions and the annual Chanukah and Purim parties. He has
been a Men's Club Federation Kol Yisrael honoree as well as a Plainview Jewish Center Man of the Year and a
Men's Club President's Circle of Achievement Award recipient.
Linda has been an active member of Hadassah since they moved to Plainview in 1977. She was a founding
member of the Beersheva group of the Plainview Chapter of Hadassah. She helped to run the Hadassah bazaar for
35 years and is now active in Tobay Hadassah as journal co-chairwoman. Linda is a past recipient of Hadassah's
Woman of the Year and National Leadership Award.
Linda and Mark were honored in 2008 by Tobay Hadassah for their continuing service and have been
Keepers of the Gate at Hadassah Hospital in Israel for the past ten years. Mark, Linda and their entire family are
life members and associates of Hadassah.
Mark is the National Sales Manager of Custom Cable and Linda is a second grade teacher and staff
developer in the Lawrence Public Schools as well as a private literacy consultant and tutor. She prides herself on
the work she does with struggling students.
Linda and Mark are the proud parents of Bonnie and her husband Adam, Scott and his wife Melissa, and
Andrew and his wife Carly and devoted grandparents to Ryan, Emily, and Jillian. They are thrilled that all of
their children are following in their footsteps and making time in their lives to help make this world a better
place.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
When I think about Mark and Linda Klayman, the first word that comes to
mind is “neighbors.” Mark and Linda live only a couple of blocks down from me. I
pass their house anywhere from four to eight times every day. I especially enjoy
walking past their house on Shabbat, when I frequently run into Mark, Linda and
other members of the Klayman family on their way in and out of a house that
always seems to be bustling with activity. Mark and Linda were among the first to
welcome my family to the neighborhood; offering their help with anything we might
possibly need. As they have made clear many times in word and deed, this offer was
not just a perfunctory gesture. We know that Mark and Linda are always there for
us; giving us an extra peace of mind that makes us feel like we must have moved on
to the best block in Plainview.
Mark and Linda have distinguished themselves as leaders at Plainview Center
and in the Plainview Jewish community. Just as important to our congregation,
though, is the kind of neighborly spirit they embody; a spirit that represents our
congregation at its best. The Klayman's are incredibly generous people. They are not
just generous with their resources, but they are also amazingly generous in spirit.
Mark and Linda give of themselves with a true sense of joy and warmth. They
obviously take great pleasure in being able to help and to make a difference for our
congregation and for our members—especially the children. They are the kind of
contributors who truly believe that giving is a privilege and a mitzvah.
Mark and Linda are also two of the most hospitable people I have ever met.
They take great pleasure in opening their home to throngs of people during the
holidays. They are gracious hosts who extend a warm welcome to everyone. They
bring this same spirit to our synagogue as well. I don't think I have ever seen Mark
walk through the door without a smile on his face and a hand outstretched in
greeting. The Klayman's have a unique ability to make everyone feel like they
belong, and to forge connections between people.
A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
(Continued from previous page)
At their core, Mark and Linda value family above all. The bond between the
Klayman's and their children and grandchildren is strong and abiding. I look
forward to seeing all the Klayman's together in our sanctuary on the High Holidays
in their accustomed spot; the model of a close, loving Jewish family. In this aspect
of their lives too, Mark and Linda are inspiring leaders; role models for our younger
families who are searching for effective ways to pass on Jewish values and traditions to the next generation.
As their rabbi, and as their neighbor, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and
appreciation to Mark and Linda Klayman, this year's Journal Dinner Honorees.
Thank you for your leadership, thank you for your generosity, thank you for your
kindness and warmth. But most of all, thank you for infusing some of your spirit
into our synagogue community and helping to bring us together—and keep us
together—in joy and in friendship. May you go from strength to strength.
-Rabbi Steven Conn
MESSAGE FROM THE CANTOR
Plainview Jewish Center
This evening’s Journal Dinner inaugurates the celebration of our 60th anniversary as a
congregation. We should justly take great pride in this wonderful milestone. How fitting it
is, then, that we honor Mark and Linda Klayman tonight. They personify everything that
makes our congregational community a unique family.
Gerri and I have known Linda and Mark since they were, themselves, parents of young
children, and have had the pleasure of seeing them become proud grandparents. Along the
way, we have shared simchas and sorrows, and have enjoyed the hospitality of their home.
They give of themselves to every arm of the Center, from Men’s Club to Youth, and I can
remember vividly the many times that their house was filled with Jewish teens attending a
regional Kinnus.
Yesterday morning the Torah portion was the sedra of Naso. In it God directs Moses to
take a census of the Levites. The Hebrew word, Naso, derives from a root that has multiple
meanings, each of which can easily apply to our honorees. It is one of the words for Jewish
marriage. Linda and Mark enjoy the fruits of a strong union – mutual love and companionship, a beautiful home and children imbued with Jewish tradition. The same root may also
mean “to count” and “to carry.” Linda and Mark and their many lifelong friends, who are the
soul of our congregation, count on each other through everything in life, carrying each other’s
cares and burdens and sharing its joys in a way that is beautiful to behold. And the last
meaning of this Hebrew root is “to elevate.” It is no exaggeration to say that the Plainview
Jewish Center has been elevated by Mark and Linda Klayman’s loyalty and devotion over the
many years of their membership. But it is no less true that all of us, indeed, the entire
community, have been elevated in so many ways by the Plainview Jewish Center.
As we begin the year of our 60th anniversary celebration, may Mark and Linda Klayman’s
example continue to inspire others to join us in the work of our congregation.
-Cantor Morris Wolk D. Mus.
A MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 59th annual Journal
Dinner Dance. Linda and Mark Klayman, our honorees this year, are two
dedicated and longtime members of Plainview Jewish Center.
I have served with Mark on both the synagogue and Men’s Club boards. He
is always someone you can count on to get things done. He generously contributes
to our events and arranges for the lighting and sound equipment for the Men’s Club
shows. And, the cake that he brings to the Men’s Club meetings, gives me an excuse
to never stay on a diet.
Linda is a key member of Tobay Hadassah. I enjoy speaking to her early in
the morning when I need her to wake Mark up to join our morning minyan.
Congratulations to Linda and Mark, their children, Bonnie, Adam, Scott,
Melissa, Andrew and Carly and their grandchildren, Ryan, Emily and Jillian.
I want to thank everyone who is attending this wonderful event, as well as
all those who have advertised in our journal or brought in ads. I also want to
thank Robert Ian Caterers for all their efforts in making this a tremendous evening
and Jeff Miller of Minuteman Press for printing the Journal.
The success of the Journal is a result of the hard work of our committee and
staff. I want to acknowledge and thank, Bruce Elowsky, Shea Lerner, Evy
Rothman, Steve Rubenfeld, Margie Richter, Dorit Mass, Laura Campione, Kym
Newborn and Rori Kirsner.
Thank you,
Allan Furman

A Message from the
Journal Committee
In this our 60th year, it is with great pleasure and pride that the Congregation
of Plainview Jewish Center, its Board of Trustees, and Executive Board honor
Linda and Mark Klayman.
For the past 59 years, the Plainview Jewish Center has been an inspiration for
the Jewish community, providing our members a place to pray, study, socialize,
observe life cycle events, and, most importantly, to perpetuate our tradition in an
ever-changing world. Through our commitment and involvement in the congrega tion, we strive to build this synagogue to be a “second home” for our congregants
and the community. Due to the extraordinary efforts and commitment from Linda
and Mark Klayman, along with the volunteers and members of our congregation,
religious school, Men’s Club, Sisterhood and community at large, our goals have
been, and will continue to be attained. We look forward to having you celebrate
our 60th anniversary in the fall of 2013. Further information will be forthcoming
shortly.
As in previous years, organizing a Journal Campaign takes a tremendous
amount of time and effort and can only be achieved with the support and
collaboration of many individuals. We sincerely express our appreciation to all
those who either solicited or subscribed their advertisements. We ask everyone to
please support our patrons and let them know that you saw their ads in our journal
program.

Dear Linda and Mark,
We are so incredibly happy and proud to share this most special evening
in honor of two amazing individuals, our dear friends, the Klaymans.
Together and apart, you both exemplify the true meaning of generosity
and devotion – to your family, friends, community and temple. Your
hearts are filled with a strong sense of charity and giving; not only by your
donations of tzedakah, but through the endless hours of time and energy
you devote to PJC, Hadassah and any and all causes you consider worthy.
You are exemplary parents, grandparents, friends, professional role
