ASSOCIATION “RIFLEMAN” (STRZELEC) IN THE II REPUBLIC OF
POLAND (1919-1939)2

Summary
The Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” (“Strzelec”) acting as a social education
organization came into existence in 1910 in Lwow on the initiative of illegally working
Active Combat Club. The club was operating legally on the basis of a statute approved by
Austria’s authorities. The first authorities in Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” were ;
Wladyslaw Sikorski (chairman), Gustaw Danilowski, Medard Downarowicz, Hoser,
Konopacki, Aleksander Litwinowicz, Ostrowski, Rysiewicz, Kazimierz Sosnkowski i Hipolit
Śliwiński. Since 1912 Active Combat Club transformed into the main headquarters, into the
real leadership of rifling organizations with the head office located in Lwow and with the
police commandant Józef Pilsudzki and a chief Sosnkowski Kazimierz. From 1910-1914, the
organization was a base for building a structure for polish legions, and next for the military
structure of II Republic of Poland.
The organization that was affiliated to military circles after the world war I, was a
paramilitary Rifleman’s Association „Rifleman” which was registered in 1919. Its first
authorities after 1919 were; T. Gałecki, M. Kuhnke, K. Pawłowicz, W. Sieroszewski, A.
Skwarczyński, S. Staniszewski, A. Śliwiński and W. Tokarzewski. The Rifleman’s
Association “Rifleman” in its agenda put a great importance on sport, physical education and
military training. Thanks to its activists, that came from the legions stream of J. Pilsudski it
was an organization which cooperating with had a very favorable conditions for developing
and running the sport activities including athletics.
S. Downarowicz the minister MSW in his letter to governors addressed a request issue
appropriate regulation to subordinate offices not to interfere in the work of the company
Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” within the approved statute.
Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” which had over 180 sections functioning to carry
out a program about the character of physical education and military training put into use the
utilitarian capability created by various athletics exercises.
For its members the Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” mandatory norms for its
award of “Rifleman” which included the pentathlon (races for garnet throw, shot-put, high
jump). Around 1000 competitors won this award. The competitors from this association were
specialized in long race, cross country race, obstacle race and race walking. From the
sportsman circles of “Rifleman” originated the obstacle race polish champions; Marian Flis i
Jan Kramek and in walking race Roman Czech, Maksymilian Krzyczkowski, Jan Powierza
and Jan Śliwiński3.

The Rifleman’s Association “Rifleman” sport traditions were also being developed
after 1919. In its agenda “Rifleman”
“Rifleman adapted physical exercises entwined with military
exercises such as obstacle race, race with armament, walking races, garnet throw, etc.
The statute of “Rifleman”
“Rifleman directed the attention of its instructors on citizen education,
military training and physical
al education. Majority of “Rifleman” sport events had a mass
character in which the main disciplines apart from rifling were athletics exercises, the most
popular marches and military multi discipline contest.
Since 1920 patrol marches appeared in the agenda
agenda of the events being organized by
“Rifleman”.. From the “Rifleman”
“Rifleman club circles came runners for unusually long distances.

In the development of sport walking
walking in the middle war period in Poland, the mass
marching events that were being organized played a great role. The most important of all was
the event organized for the first time in 1924 and later repeated year after year on August 6-8,

For the first time Polish women took part in marching competitions in 1926. Although
in the first start it was a very small group of women,
women, but taking part in the competition they
broke the female unwillingness for long-term
term sport efforts. Initially it was a participation of
unprepared teams practicing occasionally under the supervision of Pawłowiczowna.

the finishing line they defeated some of them. Eventually on 342 participants women
individually
vidually occupied 166, 172, 184 and 240 place. The participation of women in such long
and strenuous march (big difference in altitude, sharp rocky surface ) at that time aroused
admiration among the many people gathered on that route. Among marching women there
were contestants
ntestants who practiced cycling,
cycling athletics and swimming on everyday basis11.

What deserves a special attention is the participation of 13 – people teams (military
team!) in the sport events cooperating with each other on the Krakow-Jędrzejow
Krakow ędrzejow route, from
where participants were marching individually. During these marches, on first two stages
sport walking techniques requirements were obeyed. Apart from “Kadrowka Route March”

being organized yearly from 6-8
6 August, “Rifleman” was organizing in its own 16 districts
marching competitions on distances from 35 do 55 km. They were elimination competitions
to “Kadrowka Route March”.. Apart from that, in the structures of that organization on the
occasion
on of national or party holidays, committee districts put marching competitions in the
events agenda12. Rifleman’s Association by organizing such events contributed greatly to the
development and popularization of walking in13.
Created after 1919, military training
training detachments were organized in districts, province
and national structures. In districts propaganda activity made a constant raise in their numbers.
For example in 1926, in Oszmian
Oszmia district the number of military training detachments in 3
months raised
sed from 14 to 25, 6 school detachments, 16 units of rifling club, 1 unit of fire
brigade, 1 unit of non-commissioned
commissioned officers of reserve and 1 unit of sport team in Oszmian.
There were 583 members of the detachments all together. Apart from paramilitary activity

members of the detachment were participating in physical education, in which the permanent
element was athletics. During the test in Oszmian detachment in the 100 m run produced

Taking under account that in all districts at that time, there was a similar
organizational structure, it can be concluded that athletics prevailed in military training
detachments.
Since 1927 in the organization of “Rifleman”,
“Rifleman there was an arranged
ranged sport training for
women. Among other things, arranged group courses were organized, where the lectures were
given by famous athletics.

After the introduction of general sport medal (POS) by PUWF and PW, the medal for
5-battle has been recalled. In order to take part in next competitions, such as marches and
cross country races, to what a member of „Riflemen” was obliged by the statute, one had to
be in a possession of a medal. In spite of the primitive conditions in which the try-outs for the
medal had been carried out, it gained considerable popularity in the rifling circles together
with marches and cross country races. The members of “Rifleman”
