RF & Antenna Training
RF 101 – The “Db”
• Db (log10) – The “decibel” is logarithmic and is a better representation of
how signals increase or decrease in the natural world. (Law of diminishing
return).
• “If you increase power from 1,000,000 watts to 2,000,000 watts, or if you change power 1
watt to 2 watts, in either case the perceived signal increase will be +3db.”
• The other reason to use Db is that we need the “units” to be the same (dbm, dbi etc.)
• Db is a comparison from one to another, not a measurement of power itself.
•Easy way to convert…
•
14
Power increase of 2x = +3db
Power decrease of half (1/2) = -3db
• Power increase of 10x = +10db
Power decrease 1/10th = -10db
• Power increase of 4x = +6db
Power increase 8x = +9db
RF 101 – The “Dbm”
• The Dbm is an absolute power measurement.
• The “m” stands for milli-watt, which is the reference point.
• 0dbm is 1mW of power
• 1dbm is 1db stronger than 0dbm or 1db stronger than 1mW (1.3mW)
• -xdbm is power less than 1mW
• 0dbm = 1mW
-3dbm = 0.5mW 3dbm = 2mW 10dbm = 10mW -10dbm = 0.1mW
• 28dbm = 600mW (approx.) 30dbm = 1000mW or 1 watt
• 60dbm = 1,000,000mW or 1000 watts
15
• -80dbm = 0.00000001mW or 10 billionth of a watt.
RF 101 – The “Dbm”
16
RF 101 – The “Dbm”
17
RF 101 – The “Dbi”
• Dbi = The Db gain an antenna has as compared to a baseline
“Isotropic radiator” type antenna. It’s simply a reference point.
•
The Isotropic radiator is a theoretical antenna where the signal is transmitted like a
globe, equally in all directions.
• Does not exist in real life. The design of any real antenna will cause the signal to
favor one direction (even slightly) over another.
• The physical laws of the conservation of energy says if you gain power in one
direction, the other direction must be lost.
• To have antenna gain therefore means the signal pattern is changed to be
18
favorable in a certain direction over another. The more disproportional it is, the
more gain is realized.
RF 101 – Dbm and Dbi used together (EIRP)
• Dbm and Dbi – You can add or subtract them!
• Dbm is power while Dbi is antenna gain. They are both units in “Db”. Same units can be
added or subtracted very easily!
• The total power (transmitter, losses of cable, gain of antenna etc.) is called EIRP (Equivalent
Isotropically Radiated Power)
•
Example: 28dbm + (-2db coax loss) + 6dbi antenna = 34dbm EIRP.
• FCC limits EIRP for Omni-directional signals to 36dbm for the 900MHz ISM band
(our phones!) as well as 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi (our Datacom)
• For directional signals, for every 3db of antenna gain beyond 6dbi, transmitter power
must be reduced by 1dbm.
• 30dbm +6dbi = 36dbm EIRP 29dbm +9dbi = 38dbm EIRP
• 28dbm +12dbi = 40dbm EIRP 27dbm + 15dbi = 42dbm EIRP

RF 101 – General Rules of Coverage
• General Rules of RF regarding Range:
• An increase of 6db in an open area will double the coverage area.
• Halving the frequency will double the range.
• An increase of 9db in a typical indoor environment will double your
coverage area.
• Typical indoor meaning a house. In an area with lots of metal, this
may increase to 20db or more.
•** These generalities are specific to frequencies between 400MHz and
5GHz.

attenuation at 900MHz is typically 30-50% less (better)

RF 101 – How much signal do you have to play with?
• Our receiver is good for as low as -110dbm.
• Link reliability is proportional to signal margin (SNR):
• 30db margin = Voice Quality: Excellent. Link Reliability: 99%.
• 20db margin = Voice Quality: Good. Link Reliability: 95%
• 15db margin = Voice Quality: Fair. Link Reliability: 90%
