DayDream is meant to be heard
along with its lyrics.
Dreams:
This is about a ‘dream within a dream’;
of a state of emotion so powerful that
any reference to real vs unreal is lost,
as if in sleep, and even if so, ‘it is all
the same’. ‘Lover’ and ‘beloved’ are
just terms, because they are, in truth,
the same. Our innermost states
manifest themselves through the
medium we call ‘Love’. So painful that
‘I wish I did not need you’, but so
obliging that ‘I’d rather wait for
another lifetime than give it up’…
What all such riddles mean is a
representation of who or how one is.
Long live Rumi and Poe..
Thanks to Semih and Gokhan for
helping with the song’s overall
direction alternating between minor
and major tones, and to Crystal for
the mesmerizing beauty in her voice.
Hero:
Why do all fairy tales or romantic
movies end at the altar? Is there life
after the Happy Ending? Such
impressions give us from early in our
upbringing a blueprint of a world to
escape to. I must have created a
fantasy world for myself when I came
in touch with my insufficiencies;
one so alluring that I totally forgot that
it should have been just a back door:
I lived in it most of my life, searching
for the imprisoned Princess of the
Lofty Castle at the top of Mount
Phoenix, hoping to become the
mighty-but-modest Prince by saving
her. “Happily Ever After”: What better
way to be immortal than to live on in
the lips and hearts of people?
Never Too Late:
Always loved this song for the sheer
positivity it translates. Songs that
really rhyme with us- they don’t make
them like they used to. Well, maybe
one…
From a Valentine’s Day song to the
heart-warming duet that it became,
here is a song you won’t get tired of
hearing.
Pain:
Desperation is the must-have of Love.
Otherwise, we’d call it ‘Bliss’. The
search for ‘The Princess’ is relentless.
Truly, there are few things more
frustrating than ‘loving someone who
will always disappoint you’. I hope that
through the 76 channels of recording,
we manage to relay a sense of the
mixed, conflicted, contradicting,
ambiguous feelings that are inherent
to the Game of Love.
Heartful Tune for N.:
Here is the song that I thought would
make the Princess fall in love with me..
Well, it did not go as I’d had hoped.
That is when I realized that there is
really no interface between the fantasy
and the reality: one of them has to
suck. Time has passed and the
archetype of the Princess no longer
serves (or enslaves) me, but I like the
feel of a Prom-like purity this song
relays. We used lots of live strings and
keys along with the feature of a ‘double
guitar solo’ by Gokhan and Ian.
In a While:
Originally titled ‘Once’, In a While tells
us ‘hope is the Dreamer’s bread’ as
the Turkish proverb goes. I love
hope. Haven’t you been saved by it
many times? But how many times
things just even got more
complicated at the end? Hence is the
second part of this song. Hope and
chaos don’t always co-exist; they
usually alternate each other.
Devotedly:
Realizing the relentless chase of the
Princess will do no good will not make
you stop it; but it is a step. This is what
‘Devotedly’ is about. It flows in
triplets.. Do sing along. Ancient
philosophers pondered over the
“Power of Three”, and here it is. I love
the second double-solo feature in
Gokhan and Ismail’s exquisite chords..
Run and Hide:
I often wondered if drums can be a
melodic instrument: Well, here is a
shot. Behind’s Dave’s strong vocals,
try walking, running or driving along
to this tune. Love does not take
breaks and it does not move in
increments. You will touch a note
soon: keep moving.
Blues Before Sunrise:
This song was originally a ballad;
it was Evren’s idea to turn it around,
so he got to sing it and there is not a
better match for the tune. Always
grateful to him for his insights; also
love Simon’s job on the Rhodes.
A tasteful, ‘Turkish Blues’, I’d say.
Hear Me:
We thought Reggae when making this
song, eventually it turned out into a
blend. I’d say it is the best sing-along
in DayDream: “In not too long we will
be just a handful of dust baby; still,
you see no urgency to spend some
time with me. How long will you take to
see just how long I’ve been waiting.”

‘Bir sosyal yaraya parmak basan’
filmlere tahammul edemesem de, iste
size oyle bir sarki. Hayatin bir amaci

This song is for those that we have
lost, written in memory of my best
friend Kubilay who was killed 3 years
ago in a car crash with his pregnant
wife Burcu and two year old son Atilla.
A part of me died that day, and
another part of me still expects to see
him at the doorstep. Somewhere
deep inside our hearts, a small child
smiles and tells us there is never a
very last time.
The Void:
A modern-day ‘paraklaphsithyron’, I
have read versions of it in several
languages and lived it as a reality that
I created. In any emotional affair,
projection of our inner prints is
inevitable, hence the joy and the pain.
We grow out of all of it eventually to
learn for good what a fascinating
