Gr. Hudson Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner 2015 HONORING OUR SHINGING STARS NEW HAMPSHIRE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE SPEAKER: SHAWN JASPER Shawn N. Jasper, Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Speaker Shawn N. Jasper, currently serving in his 11th term in the New Hampshire House, represents the towns of Hudson and Pelham in Hillsborough County, District 37. In his role as speaker, he also chairs the House Rules Committee as well as the Joint Legislative Committee on Facilities. In previous terms as a member of the NH House of Representatives, Speaker Jasper has served in several leadership positions, including Deputy Majority Leader, Assistant Majority Leader, Majority Whip, Minority Whip, and on various House standing committees, including Legislative Ethics (Chair), Judiciary, Ways and Means, Legislative Administration and Election Law. Shawn is a member of the Hudson Historical Society, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, the Bektash Shriners, and the Free & Accepted Masons. He has also served 16 years on the Hudson Board of Selectmen, the Hudson Municipal Budget Committee, and as Town and School District Moderator. Speaker Jasper, a graduate of Alvirne High School in Hudson and the University of New Hampshire, is a self-employed property owner. He and his wife Laurie reside in Hudson and have a daughter, Sarah. Hudson Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the year for her leadership, selflessness, volunteerism and dedication. Laura is passionate about giving back to her community serving in various capacities of leadership roles and volunteerism. She has stepped up as a recent member to the Hudson School Board since 2009, as well as taking on the responsibility of Vice Chairperson and most recently as Chairperson. Laura is also a member of the Board of Directors for a non-profit organization called Catie’s Closet. Catie’s Closet is a project close to her heart that helps kids by providing clothing and necessities to students in need to boost confidence and school attendance. When word got out the future of Hudson Old Home Days traditional annual event was in jeopardy, she jumped in to volunteer her time to organize, plan and tirelessly work at keeping the long-standing event alive by becoming one of the founding board members of the Hudson Old Home Days Committee. As a volunteer she puts her heart in soul into everything she takes on, from being part of important contract negotiations and policy making for the School District to picking up clothes for the Catie’s Closet organization to the menial of tasks as washing tables and picking up trash at the Hudson Old Home Days Event. She never fails to bring optimism in all she does, which carries over onto all those that she works and volunteers with in her various community projects and initiatives. As an elected member of the Hudson School Board, Laura committed to the SAU 81 Dropout Task Force working toward and achieving a decrease in the dropout rate in our schools. She was also a representative for the Superintendents Business Advisory Council working to connect business and education for the betterment of the town. Previously Laura has served as a PTO committee member and stepped up as PTO CoChair has served on the Hudson/Litchfield Football and Cheer organization as a board member and volunteered as a CCD teacher and the Tithing Committee at St. Kathryn’s Church. Her desire to provide the best possible education and opportunities for the youth and citizens of our community is commendable and beyond praiseworthy. Professionally Laura has worked in sales and marketing, as a substitute teacher, tutor and paraprofessional in the Hudson School District and now currently works part time at Kohl’s and full time at United HealthCare as a supervisor and team leader. She is a dedicated leader in our community and worthy of the title Citizen of the Year. Laura and her husband, Steve are proud parents of Kaleigh and Marc Bisson. Laura continues to make our community a better place, continually giving her time, expertise and enthusiasm and it is with great pleasure the Gr. Hudson Chamber of Commerce recognizes Laura as this year’s Citizen of the Year! Congratulations Laura! 7 WHITE BIRCH CATERING & BANQUET HALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR It is the Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce’s honor to present the award for Business of the Year to The White Birch Catering & Banquet Hall. Owner’s Raymond and son Joshua Bouley opened The White Birch in 2011 at the 222 Central Street location in Hudson. The father/son duo offer the Hudson community a full banquet option along with off-site catering services as well as holding a weekly Sunday brunch where folks can gather and come together. Their long list of home style menu items and friendly staff work to provide a comfortable atmosphere for any celebration or gathering. Ray and Josh have established strong ties within the community working to meet everyone’s budget. In addition to anniversaries, weddings, showers, reunions, birthdays, life celebrations, corporate meetings and retirements at their banquet facility but will cater off site. The family owned and operated business is involved with many community activities. The White Birch supports approximately ten American Red Cross blood drives annually at their location and provides food for those donating life-giving blood. They sponsor various non-profit and fundraising events such as Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Jeff Roome Sports Foundation, Lion’s Camp Pride, Pelham VFW and Relay for Life. As members of the Hudson Lion’s Club the White Birch hosts the clubs twice a month meetings of which Ray supports the group’s efforts, which gives back to the public with donations and volunteer time for their various projects. As a conscientious business in the community, the White Birch is a steadfast supporter of the Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce Annual Charity Auction and Dinner along with a desire to help others while persistently supporting programs throughout the community. The White Birch Catering and Banquet Hall is a business that challenges there selves to be a part of its community by making contributions of time, talent and donations while taking initiative as an outstanding business within our community. Congratulations – White Birch Catering & Banquet Hall! 8 HUDSON POLICE DEPARTMENT OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY PARTNER It is the Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce’s honor to bestow the award for Outstanding Community Partner to the Hudson Police Department. The Hudson Police Department is being recognized for service and contributions for our community that go above and beyond their daily call to duty. By nature of their job the men and women of the Hudson Police Department keep our community safe by doing their job and doing it extremely well. New Hampshire was once again named the safest state to live in, with Hudson being the 9th largest community it is one of the safest communities in the state. In addition to being preventative the department has always maintained a high solvability rate for crimes. What is more impressive is the work they do that goes unnoticed at times. Every year the Hudson Police Department holds a twice a year blood drive collecting almost 15,000 pints of blood for the American Red Cross; collect toys for the Marine’s Toys for Tots drive; ring the bell each holiday season for the Salvation Army; annually hold a kid friendly Fright Night; help with gift and food donations in addition to distribution for the St. John XXIII food pantry; twice a year send care packages overseas to the troops; adopt a family each holiday season providing a family in need Christmas presents and dinner; and participate in the Special Olympics and Winni Dip. The list of contributions continues with their volunteerism and participation in the CHaD baseball and hockey games; participate as councilors for the Camp Fatima Special Needs week; interact with the youth during Halloween by passing out candy as well as their weekend long support of the Hudson Old Home Days event freely volunteering their time. As needed the Hudson Police Department has stepped up to serve the communities in need outside our area such as volunteering at the New York City 911 recovery process and the New Jersey storm clean-up. The youth of our community is a priority to the officers and employees of the Hudson Police Department as they have sponsored a child for the middle school Washington DC trip; sponsor various Hudson team sports and aided kids with incurable diseases for special trips and accommodations. These are just a few of the outstanding contributions our Hudson Police Department has impressively committed to and supported. The Hudson Police Department members are involved with the community and work closely to solve problems, provide programs and are committed to assisting the business community, citizens as well as charitable organizations. The partnership strengthens Hudson making it a great place to work and do business with the best interest of the local community through contributions and involvement for which they are being honored our Outstanding Community Partner. Hudson Chamber of Commerce is award our Junior Citizen of the Year with a $2,000 scholarship to further his education. 14 JOSEPH WEDGE JR JUNIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Joseph Wedge Jr.’s, achievements thus far are worthy of notice and his potential in the future is destined for great success. Joey, a senior at Alvirne High School, is a positive role model that exemplifies a high level of initiative in and out of the classroom. He is an exceptional young man who demonstrates a commitment to lead and serve with in both his school and the local community. Joey’s hard work in school makes him an ideal student and his compassion for others makes him an ideal person. He has enriched the school environment with his insight and compassion. His outgoing personality makes him a natural leader. Joey has participated on the school track team, drama club, and in the Alvirne Air Force Junior ROTC Program through all four years, giving back over 1200 hours to the Hudson community. While managing his academic career and working part time at the local grocery store as well as working with children at a local day care center, he has a varying array activities he has involved himself in at school and within the community. He has volunteered with the New England Aquarium, volunteered for spring cleanup at the school and local VFW, sang and performed at various events, and assisted as a teacher’s aide. This year Joey was selected the Junior ROTC Program Public Affairs Officer, coordinating with the local media plus stepped up at the Leadership Laboratory Activities over the summer, running the four-day program for three different high schools and serving as a mentor for Alvirne High School. In addition to his scholastic abilities, Joey excels as an actor and musician, as a member of the Drama Club, serving as a drama coach as well as the participating in the school chorus. Not only is Joey active in the performing arts but also the visual arts. He works during and after school on Alvirne’s news program – Studio 19. He puts to use his outstanding journalism skills to develop, produce and direct stories specific to the school. Joey’s insight, compassion and values will be an asset to him in his chosen field of study and his life as he moves forward. His ultimate goal is teach and has worked tirelessly in the community mentoring and aiding students academically, through music and as a role model. Joey’s strong sense of community, diligence, and caring are a great example to our youth today and therefore being honored as this year’s Junior Citizen of the Year. He plans to be a teacher and has been accepted to Lesley University in Cambridge MA. He is the son of Pamela and Joseph Wedge Sr. of Hudson.
