Kelly MaryMary ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The 2014 Music-Entertainment Conference, held at the Four Points by Sheraton, was a tremendous success, and once again proved how important and valuable events or conferences like these are. Many in the music industry have great memories of the numerous Urban Network Conferences that took place throughout the 90s and first decade of the 2000s. After a five year absence, the 2014 Conference was a chance to reunite some of the music industry’s top brass in a relaxed yet professional environment. It was also an opportunity for many newcomers, not necessarily familiar with the Conferences of the past, or perhaps too young to attend those events, to connect and introduce themselves to their music-entertainment industry peers. The 2014 Conference was an opportunity for indie and major recording artists, producers and songwriters to display their talents through various scheduled showcases, the Be Seen & Be Heard A&R sessions, and various branding and digital platforms. More than 70 independent artists from all genres of music, ranging from R&B, Rap, Urban Alternative and Gospel, including several bands, performed over the four-day event. Entertainment executives and entrepreneurs throughout the music industry attended the Conference for networking opportunities, to share their wealth of expertise and to seek out new talent and business opportunities. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE ( C O N T I N U E D ) Over 100 top industry panelists were in attendance at the 2014 Conference, participating on a very impressive list of music related panels. The Conference was well attended by radio and mix show DJs, artist managers, entertainment attorneys, music publishers, performance rights organizations, music supervisors, trade groups, digital strategists, film and TV consultants, & more. The Music & Entertainment Conference 2014 was a media event; an opportunity for select bloggers, journalists and mainstream entities inside TV, radio, print publications and online to experience and discuss the Conference with their audience. 5 Pictured (l-r): Ethiopia Habtemariam (2nd from right), President of Motown Records and Universal Music Publishing was the illustrious Keynote Speaker at the 2014 Conference. BY LARRY BUFORD (EURWEB.COM) Absent from the conference circuit for five years, the popular Urban Network Amalgamation Magazine hosted a music entertainment Conference themed “Back To Basics” 2014 in San Diego the weekend of May 1st through May 4th. It was an unforgettable event with people coming from as far away as Australia, Japan, London, Barbados and all across the United States. It all started last year (2013) when Urban Network Digital President Arthur Mitchell, and Amalgamated Magazine Publisher David Mitchell discussed the idea of bringing the conference back. They in turn discussed it with former Urban Network President Miller London (who is also a former Motown VP), and Urban Network Vice President Tosha Thomas – and the wheels were set in motion. 5 BET Executive Kelly G receives Award of Excellence during Conference CONFERENCE RECAP 2014 ( C O N T I N U E D ) Initially called the PowerJam Conference, the Urban Network Conference began in the early 1990’s, and is widely known for quality, credibility, and its broad spectrum – something for everyone. The experience was much more than I and others expected. The goal of the conference is to bring together people from all facets of the music industry – artists, broadcasters, A&Rs, publishers, managers, attorneys and others. This year was unique in that it brought in a younger generation nurtured on the social media and digital technologies that have exploded since the last conference in 2009. During the four-day Conference many stars were on hand including veterans like Charles “Express Yourself” Wright, Producer/Artist Reggie Calloway, Recording Artist Steven Harts (of Troop), Norman Connors, Kim Waters, and James Morrison former member of The Platters. Many young hopefuls were there promoting their product by handing out copies of their CD’s. Their presentation and materials were impressive. Awards and acknowledgements went to a list of deserving people – Ethiopian Habtemariam (President Motown Records); Fuzzy Fantabulous (Beats Music); Kelly G; Kevin Hall (Executive VP Rondor Music); King Trick (San Diego Recording Artist/Producer); Larry Blackwell (VP, GM Motown Gospel); Miller London; Leo Rodgers (CEO Street Scholar Music/Sr. VP Bungalo Records); Norman “You Are My Starship” Connors; Sonya Love (Syndicated Radio Host); and Tayari Howard (San Diego Radio Vet/Founder Tayari Media Group). CONFERENCE RECAP 2014 ( C O N T I N U E D ) Featured performances by various artists – too many to mention in one article – were scheduled day and night over the four-day weekend. Saturday’s Award Ceremony included outstanding performances by world-class harpist Mariea Antoinette; a hot girl group to watch, Elevé; CJ Hilton who had I not heard it for myself would not believe anyone could sound so much like Marvin Gaye; Sheléa whose single “Love The Way You Love Me” is sweeping across the nation; Steven Harts performing his many hits recorded with Troop; and showstoppers Tony! Toni! Toné! The show was emceed by San Diego radio vet Walt Love, and Kevin Fleming, Editor, The Urban Buzz. Sunday’s brunch featured stellar performances by Norman Connors and Kim Waters. D’wayne Wiggins of Tony! Toni! Toné! joined Connors and his fantastic band for a jam session out of this world! “What a remarkable turn-out for an event that’s been on a five year hiatus,” said David Mitchell. “It just goes to show that the industry still needs events like ours. Artists, managers, labels, radio professionals and the like need a place where we can all come together and exchange ideas, discuss the issues specifically important to us, and do business. We’re already in the process of planning for next year.” Arthur said, “There were at least 500 people and 70 acts that came out and supported us. I am extremely pleased and overwhelmed with the response from industry people…early on when I asked Kelly G to support us he said “I’m down…I’ll be there.” CONFERENCE RECAP 2014 ( C O N T I N U E D ) Arthur said, “There were at least 500 people and 70 acts that came out and supported us. I am extremely pleased and overwhelmed with the response from industry people…early on when I asked Kelly G to support us he said “I’m down…I’ll be there.” It’s important the Conferences remain in Southern California, according to Arthur, “Like the Oscars are to Hollywood, Urban Network Conferences are to California. We’ll be back next year!” 3 Club, Mixshow and Radio DJs from Southern California brought their voices to the DJ Power Panel. Panel included Radio Raymond T from San Diego station Z-90; DJ Chill Will, DJ Jam, DJ Bille Knight, DJ Artistic, Conference CoChair Troy Marshall and others. Founded in 1994, Sweet Relief Musicians Fund provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems. In other words, Healing Musicians in Need. Benefits have been performed in venues from Miami to Seattle, with performances donated by many established and emerging artists. Nightclubs, concert halls, radio stations, internet sites, restaurants, clothing and shoe companies, music retailers, athletes, actors, corporations, foundations and music fans have all participated with Sweet Relief to assist struggling musicians. The choice an individual makes to be a professional musician is one of sacrifice. The average income across the various employment options while accounting for the part time nature of most opportunities is less than $25,000 annually. Over 65% of professional musicians do not have health insurance. While the financial hardship a musicians faces when dealing with illness or disability may be a constant, we now face a burgeoning elder population of artists with little or no resources available for such emergency situations. We all have received so much out of music, it's time to give a little back! https://www.sweetrelief.org/ CONTACT US Arthur Mitchell [email protected] 619-401-4014 270 East Douglas St. El Cajon, CA 92020 www.urbannetworkdigital.com David Mitchell [email protected] 424.227.8046 office 310.770.2495 mobile www.amalgamationmag.com
