been consistently denied a victory – something the French competitors
are hoping to rectify this year.

The Kingdom of Poland has returned this year and will be keen to go one
better than its 2015 performance which saw the team pipped to the post
by the Kingdom of England, losing by just one point. Meanwhile, the
Kingdom of Norway will be making its Arundel debut with two of the
countryʼs best jousters who will be hoping for a case of beginnerʼs luck!
With honour and glory at stake, you can look forward to a hotly contested
international competition – and plenty of drama too!

The Kingdom of Norway
Ivar Mauritz-Hansen
Ivar was born in 1986 Bærum, Norway and was inspired by
the medieval times in his early childhood through stories
and movies. He started competing in Olympic fencing at the
age of 9. In 2006 he began training with medieval swords
and armour and joined De Norske Frilansene in 2007.
After a year of fighting as a foot soldier Ivar started riding
at Trollspeilet with the ambition of becoming a knight. He
broke his first lance in preparation for the Nordic Challenge
Tournament in Norway in 2008.

Andrew McKinnon
Andrew McKinnon hails from Sydney’s northern
beaches and came to jousting later in life after a

The Kingdom of England: Reigning Champions!
As Arundel Castle’s “home team”, England has been represented
at the Tournament ever since its beginnings as an international
competition in 2008.
England is the birthplace of historical competitive jousting in the
modern world, and home to the Royal Armouries, English Heritage,
and the legendary Destrier jousting troupe. As a result its team is
able to draw on a long history and an exceptionally wide range of
jousters both from within the UK and internationally.
Each year the finest competitors are selected to joust for England at
Arundel Castle, which explains why the team remained undefeated
for most of the tournament’s history.
Representing England carries tremendous prestige and expectation
– this team will do its utmost to defend its hard won title against the
Polish team in 2015 and take victory once more.
Per Estein Prøis-Røhjell
Per Estein aka Pelle, was born in 1976, and he is married
with two children. He works as a riding instructor in his
own company Trollspeilet, that offers riding instruction all
over Norway and abroad. He has participated in medieval
tournaments in Denmark, Sweden, Germany and France, and
was Tournament Champion at the Tournament of St Olav in
Trondheim in 2012.
Luc Petillot
Luc’s passion for horses and history spans the 13th to
19th century. He keeps 12 horses at home in France,
where he organizes jousting clinics and foot combat
tournaments as well as training horses and riders with
lance, saber, pistols and carbines. Luc frequently travels
to compete in jousting tournaments all over the world.
He has ridden in a number of re-enactment battles
in Europe.

Marie Baron
Marie started riding when she was very young.
She tried a lot of disciplines and started competition in
classical dressage. She started learning to joust in 2005
in the medieval re-enactment group “Excalibur”, and
since then, she has taken part in several international
tournaments, in Belgium, Germany, Canada, Australia,
Denmark and Poland,... She has been one of the first
female jousters in France.

The Kingdom of Poland
Jan Gradon
Jan became involved in Polish historical re-enactment on
foot in 1996 and mounted in 2005. Over the years he has
turned his interest in history into true passion, as he trained in
full-contact medieval foot combat, portrayed an Ulhan cavalryman of the 19th century Grand Duchy of Warsaw, and rode as
a knight at Europe’s largest battle re-enactments, the battles of
Tannenberg (Poland) Hastings (UK) and Waterloo.

Łukasz Dutkiewicz
Łukasz lives in Kanie Helenowskie, which is a small town
just 20km from the center of Warsaw, where he co-runs
a stables and riding school Pa-Ta-Taj. Together with his
wife Zuzanna and her family they currently own around
100 horses and ponies. They train horses and people for
sports such as show jumping, dressage, cross country and
equestrian vaulting and they are the home of the Xiazeca
Druzyna, Poland’s largest historical mounted display group.

The Ladies of the Joust
Marshall of the Field:
Kyle Van Dolah-Evans
Kyle is the co-organiser of the Arundel tournament, and has
been one of the lady judges for the past four years, judging
the horsemanship and chivalry of the competitors.
In 2016 she will be the Marshall. This position is traditionally
held by the individual champion of the previous year.
Unfortunately the 2015 champion is unable to join us, so
Kyle has graciously agreed to step into the role.
Kyle will be the first Lady Marshall in Arundel’s history.
She will be the head judge, supreme voice of authority on the field.
Kyle is well qualified to fill this role, having judged tournaments in the USA
and England since 2009. In addition to her tournament experience, she is an
accomplished rider, having ridden and competed as an eventer since she was
a young girl. These days she often expresses her equestrian prowess sitting side
saddle, displaying more gumption than sense as she has been known to leap over dining
tables, run relay races, throw javelins, charge at a quintain and fire a bow and arrow, all
while riding side saddle.

Kate Vigurs
A professional commentator and historical interpreter Kate
Vigurs has been the commentator and lady of the Joust at
the Arundel castle jousts since 2007 and has been involved in
mounted historical displays since 1999 when she began work
at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.
Since then Kate’s love of history and horses has happily
combined and she has represented many periods of history
from horseback from Medieval and Tudor to 18th century
and Victorian. She has undertaken mounted falconry and
even portrayed Nell Gywnn and Annie Oakley! Kate is a
member of Destrier, commentator for the English Heritage side saddle display
‘The Victorian Gymkhana’ (of which she is very proud) and in 2014 will be
involved in ‘War and the horse’ highlighting the role of women and horses
during the Great war. Kate is also a skilled swordswoman and demonstrates two
handed sword, rapier and dagger and small sword regularly for various festivals.

Lady Catherine
With over 20 years spent in the pursuit of the often
“hidden” history of medieval women, Catherine has happily
been part of many events, all over Europe and the UK.
Her passion is for the high middle ages; the era of the
“Wars of the Roses” and she is always delighted to be
involved in the drive to meld high quality research with the
need to entertain as well as educate.
