WESTERN ART AUCTION
WESTERN ART HAS BEEN A
COMPONENT OF THE CALGARY
STAMPEDE FROM THE VERY
BEGINNING
The great western artist Edward Borein illustrated posters for the
Stampede, and by the early 1930s, regular art exhibitions were part
of the Stampede. Since the early 1980s, the Calgary Stampede has
included a live auction of the best in contemporary and historical
western art. For the price of an auction ticket, western art
collectors, buyers and artists alike are immersed in the experience
of Western art. The evening includes a buffet, Artist In Action
created works and the main event, a live auction of original works
of art. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Artist in Action
fund the Grade 12 Western Art Scholarships. The net sales from the
live and silent auctions go back to the artists themselves.
The live Art Auction will be held on Thursday, July 9.
The fun will begin at 5pm.
Palamino Room, BMO Centre, Stampede Park.

WESTERN
“Kind Eddy” by David Grudniski
I tend to look at the word “western” in relation to western Canadian history and the
pioneers who opened up the west. These people were optimistic, cheerful and generous.
They were connected to the land they developed and were good stewards of the land.
The western frontier attracted men and women with imagination; fearless people, with
a longing in their souls for adventure. Certainly only those with initiative and a bit of
bulldog determination remained through those testing years. Thus, there was a common
denominator.
The pioneers were practical; they had to be. Yet, among those first “sodbusters” there
was no lack of sentiment, humour, mischief and romance. The heroes of that western
adventure left lessons of great worth. They would never admit defeat; they took pride in
“getting things done”, and best of all, they left tradition of good will.
Their performance, characterized by vigor, courage and resourcefulness, holds priceless
messages for today. May we pass on to future generations this true “western heritage”.

EDWARD NYIKES:
Edward is a graduate of the Alberta
College of Fine Art and Design with a Bachelor’s degree in
Drawing. Describing and recounting his explorations through
the years he spent working seismic in the Alberta oil patch,
he has created specific places designed to recapture a time
or feeling. Edward has found a new freedom in his latest line

powerful experiences can translate into powerful imagery and
ultimately that is what he is trying to achieve. Collections and

CYNTHIA WARD:
Cynthia lives in beautiful Burmis, AB
with her family and their horses enjoying a rural lifestyle. She
has had a 26 year career in fast paced animation production
in Boston, Los Angeles and Toronto, doing many aspects of
creative work and working with very talented people. Every
day one or more of the shows she worked on is a rerun on
television. After that career Cynthia now focuses her talent
on painting predominately western subject with an emphasis
on adding the ‘spark’ of life in a painterly way. Cynthia enjoys
participating in the Artists in action at the Calgary Stampede
Western Art Auction!
URSULA PAGENKOPF:
Ursula is a native of Germany.
A self-taught artist, Ursula studied painting as a hobby.
Her love of children and animals is reflected in her many
paintings. Ursula is a member of the Calgary Sketch Club and
the Springbank Creative Arts Club. Ursula’s paintings can be
found in Calgary Galleries.
HOLLY McWILLIAMS: Holly is a multifaceted artist who
lives in Calgary Alberta. Like many contemporary artists, she
is fascinated by the play of light and temperature in her work
and is not afraid to throw in a little texture for fun. Holly’s
formal art training was at ACAD in the mid 90’s and since
2000, she has been a professional artist, and an independent
fine art teacher with Swinton’s Art Instruction. She has work
in a number of collections, both corporate and private, in
Canada, USA and England. Holly is available for commissions
and also teaches a wide array of art classes and workshops for
the beginner up to professional artist.
DOUG LEVITT:
Doug was born and raised in Calgary and
began illustrating children’s books when he was 14. His historic
works seek to preserve moments from First Nations way of life
and to explore themes of the West, while reflecting Doug’s
passion for authentic detail as well as drama accomplished
through skillful evocation of light and shadow. Doug was the
artist chosen to create the 2008 Calgary Stampede Poster and
2012 Western Art Show Pin.

W E S T E R N A RT A U C T I O N
PATTI EMMERSON:
Patti is a self-taught artist working
primarily with acrylic and ink on canvas. A successful
designer and project manager in the residential construction
industry for twenty years, she now dedicates herself to a
thriving professional artistic practice. Patti took her first
painting lesson in 2009, and since then, her work has been
placed in private and corporate collections across Canada,
exhibited in numerous shows, has participated in live painting
competitions, and attended the Calgary Stampede Artist
Ranch Project Residency in September 2014. Studio22 Gallery
in Kingston, Ontario and ESPACE33 Gallery in Gatineau,
Quebec currently represent Patti’s work.
MICHAEL BLESSING: Michael is a self-taught oil painter,
and is compelled by the shapes in a composition. Having an
inclination toward figurative painting, he favours a candid
view of his subjects, often depicting everyday moments and
universally relevant emotions. Blessing is drawn to strong
compositions, vibrant colour and bold lines. His figurative
work and paintings of vintage Western nostalgia are widely
appealing and have an edgy quality that is both contemporary
and timeless.
MICHELLE GRANT:
A native Calgarian, Michelle’s art
is intricately connected to the spirit of cowboy culture in
Alberta. She has been working as an artist since the 1990’s
and works in many mediums including oils, acrylic and
graphite. Michelle’s exquisitely rendered equine imagery is
internationally recognized. Many of her works are published
in books, magazines and viewed on television. In 2012,
Michelle won the Calgary Stampede, Western Art Auction,
Artistic Achievement Award and she was commissioned to
create the Calgary Stampede 100th year commemorative gold
and silver coins for the Royal Canadian Mint. Her paintings
are in private and corporate collections worldwide.
DOUG SWINTON:
As a native Calgarian, Doug is profoundly
influenced by his close proximity to the prairies, foothills,
and mountains. His paintings are full of powerful movement,
light, and bold colour. For Doug, it is more about the doing,
than the end product. A co-owner of Swinton’s Art Supplies,
Doug teaches many in-house classes. He believes that only
when all of our technical skills meet all of our creativity, will
we truly make art. If we do our job well, the painter and the
viewer will be two moments of a single reality.

4th Street with a few made up buildings added. At first I was
attracted to the monumental nature of this street scene. I love
this type of dramatic view looking up a street, framed with
large buildings on both sides, and at first this is what attracted
me but as it developed, I noticed the interaction between the
two main figures. They seem to be involved in a standoff. I
feel that they represent two different views on the very nature
of Calgary – perhaps the past and the future of this city.”

Winter on the prairie represented a number of challenges for
the Plains people. As the days grew shorter in the fall, hunters
spent most of their time seeking game in order to develop a
cache of food to last through much of the winter. Often times
however, the hunters were forced to go out in the cold and
snow to harvest more game. This was a difficult endeavor
which usually ended in a failure to bring back meat. The people
often lived on an almost starvation diet until the warmer days
brought back more abundant food supplies.

This painting, Deserted Farm, is just east of Vulcan Alberta. I
was on a painting and sketching trip in Southern Alberta and
as side roads usually offer hidden treasures to paint like this
old farm. I was especially attracted to the composition just
as it presented itself and did not need the artists ‘license’ to
move things around. The weathered boards of the buildings
contrasted with the soft colour of the prairie grass captured
the essence.

stallion, this specific portrait mixed with abstracts technics.
I like to let the energy of the inspiration be felt through the

I love creating 3-dimensional shapes from flat steel. It’s an
organic process that starts with hundreds of tiny pieces that
each have to be cut and individually ground, which is very
difficult in itself. Then I start at the bottom and just build and
layer and shape as I go. It’s exciting to see the art piece take on
a life of it’s own as I go. Heads? Or, Tails? is the first set of fish
that I have ever done. After this I did a set of seven fish in a

Irrigation Survey Group 1904
Oil, 48 x 66
$20,000
Vickers specializes in Figurative Art. Her inspiration comes
from western historic persons whose accomplishments are
tucked away in the archives at the Glenbow Museum. Each work
is based on capturing that moment from an old photograph;
Vickers’ goal is to dust off that moment and celebrate it
by bringing it back to life through paint. The men in this
painting include from back left, Mr. Shaw, Donald McDonald
and William Dean; from the front of the line A.B. Cook, J.F.
Hamilton & George Howie. It is based on a photo from 1906.
The government sent these men south of Pincher Creek to do an
irrigation survey. The youngest man, being Donald McDonald,
was no more than 13 years of age. In this land, they were sent
to survey, resided grizzly bears and resentful Indians. The only
way to survive such conditions was to be resourceful and alert. 54

Percy Two Gun Plainswoman (1895-1961)
Chief Crowfoot, Blood
Oil, 9 x 6
$1,500
Two Gun (1895–1961) is the Blackfoot name of Percy Plainswoman
(or Plain Woman). The name Two Gun was handed down to him
by his uncle Chief Eaglechild and so he signed his work with
two small crossed guns. He attended St. Mary’s Residential
School on the Kainai (Blood) Reserve, leaving after grade seven
to take up life as a cowpuncher. He became an expert rider
and bronc buster and rodeoed throughout the west. Two Gun
was middle aged when he became a self-taught artist, the first
Kainai to make a living with his art. He was commissioned to
paint a history of the Blackfoot tribes on the lobby walls of the
Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton Lakes National Park. The
Glenbow in Calgary and the Galt Museum in Lethbridge have
exhibited and collected his work.

Three Eagles (Tcleskaimi) was a Nez Perce (Flathead) chief who
was camping with his tribe at Ross Hole in 1905. One day when
he was out scouting the area for horse thieves, he encountered
the Lewis and Clark expedition. The explorers decided to camp
nearby and there was a friendly exchange of tobacco, buffalo
robes and blankets. Charlie Russell’s dramatic 1912 twenty-five

And Clark Meet The Flatheads”. It is housed in the Montana

The Western Art Show’s annual limited-edition

Calgary Stampede Western Art show in July,
1988. The “Pin Frenzy” surrounding Calgary’s
1988 Winter Olympics motivated ten Stampede

introduction of an Artist-designed limitededition annual pin. Distinguished Western
artists were to be selected to design the pins.
The artists were selected based on continuous

of the annual Western Art Show.
Series One
PALETTE-BRUSH (1988 – 1997)

The Artist Ranch Project is an initiative designed to facilitate
an interpretation of western heritage and values through
contemporary art. Each year, four or five artists are selected by
jury to attend a weekend residency in the fall at a working ranch
in Alberta to examine the significance of the traditional western
lifestyle from an artistic viewpoint. The artists spend several
months creating artwork inspired by their ranch experience,
culminating in a unique exhibition and sale of work in the
Calgary Stampede art show. The Artist Ranch Project seeks artists
with little or no prior experience with western art or cowboy
culture in order to successfully achieve the dynamic merging of
two cultures.

Pedersen, Karen
Karen
is
a
self-taught
artist,
residing in Carstairs, AB. She began
painting seriously in the mid 1990’s
and developed her style through
experimentation in different mediums.
“An artist’s greatest challenge,” she says,
“is to evoke emotion and to create a
connection between the art and the
viewer”. Whether working in acrylics or
oils, Karen’s focus remains: to achieve
a fluid quality of movement, light
and form. She believes “en plein air”
(outdoors) painting is one of the finest
ways to learn about light, shadow, and
colour. Painting in nature allows her to
capture and represent the subtleness of
a subject.
