In keeping with this philosophy Petrotrin facilitated a visit by regulatory agencies to its SWS Field in the month of August. The device is a safe and effective one that is currently used in major marine oil and gas markets globally. Editorial Maintaining Energy Stability in a low oil price scenario The protracted fall in crude oil prices over the past year has severely impacted the operations of energy producers around the world. While Petrotrin has benefited from the integrated nature of its business; the organization has not been immune to the effects of the falling oil prices. Continued low oil prices over the period coupled with mounting debt has strained the Company’s operations, challenging its capacity to implement key projects required to ensure its long term sustainability. In order to survive and build a more robust organization, we must implement strict cost management initiatives and work together to build a culture of cost-consciousness and high productivity throughout our operations. During the month of August 2015, crude prices trading on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) plunged below US$40 a barrel- the lowest levels recorded since 2009. In response, Petrotrin immediately scaled back on aggressive drilling operations to pursue only those projects that were deemed essential and/ or commercially feasible. Though prices have since recovered slightly, this has done little to improve the Company’s financial position. In our downstream operations, Petrotrin’s Refining and Marketing Division has realized positive refinery margins within recent months however, while the Company benefited from improved margins, they did not offset the severe challenges to the Company’s cash flow and net profitability. The plunge in global oil prices has had a dramatic nega- tive impact on Petrotrin’s cash flow. As a result, Petrotrin has sought to maintain its cost structure while simultaneously taking steps to stretch out its debt payments by converting some short term debt into long term debt to meet the growing demand for cash. Nonetheless, the Company must reduce expenses significantly. In the end, its ability to overcome current challenges will depend on the support of all stakeholders. Moving forward, we must continue working together to find and utilize methods that are both cost conscious and effective. We must each be prepared to review the way we do business, practice high levels of discipline and demonstrate optimum productivity in all of our respective areas of work. As custodians of the nation’s energy resources, we must improve our efficiency levels and address all situations that are counterproductive to our survival and continued growth. Recognizing Petrotrin’s current circumstances, we must actively work together to renew our commitment to ensuring the sustainability of our operations and to providing positive returns to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The initial focus of this initiative is to identify steam leaks, track their status and prioritise mitigation actions to alleviate these risks. Attaching tags adjacent to a failing asset condition – a steam leak for example, will demonstrate to Plant personnel that the risk has been identified and mitigation actions will soon be underway. In turn, this will Nitrogen Generation Unit Nears Completion Petrotrin is nearing the completion of construction works for a Nitrogen Generation Unit in the Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery. This unit is set for commissioning near the end of the 2015 calendar year. The construction of the Nitrogen Generation Unit is another project geared towards improving operations within the Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery. Prior to this project, the Company sourced its nitrogen supply from external contractors. Project works began in 2012 and is being managed by a cross functional team led by Project Manager Donald Gopaul. The team is comprised of employees from Central Engineering & Construction; Health, Safety and the Environment, Operations, Instruments, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. To date, mechanical works for the Nitrogen Generation Unit in the Conversions Area of the Refinery are in the final stages, and the team is focusing on an end date of 2015 November. 6 PetroConnect No. 157, 9 of 2015 eliminate duplicate identification of such risks, and allow maintenance personnel to easily locate the correct risk to be mitigated. This initiative will encourage an accountability element as each tag will be accompanied by a label containing the date, priority, work order number and location of the failing asset condition. The tagging of steam leaks is intended to assist in bringing the steam distribution system under control by reducing wasted steam being released into the atmosphere. Senior Manager Operations, Mr. Nigel Bradshaw placed the inaugural tags on two steam leaks in the 4VDU area on September 04. Steam leaks that are tagged in the pilot 4VDU and 2VBU areas are being prioritised based on their feasibility for repair while the Plant is running, with lower priority being given to those that require an outage. When a sufficient number of steamleaks have been identified and tagged, a specialist contractor will be brought in to carry out efficient repairs through the Maintenance Department. Phillip Ryan appointed President of TTNCAA Inspector Phillip Ryan who is currently based at Petrotrin’s Penal operations was appointed President of the Trinidad and Tobago National Council on Alcoholism and other Addictions (TTNCAA) on 2015 July 15. The TTNCAA functions in the arena of abuse prevention by educating and informing the public about the ill effects of alcohol and drug abuse. This organisation also assesses and refers persons to other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for assistance. With forty-two years of voluntary service shared among various organizations, Inspector Ryan is also a representative of the National Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Programme (NADAPP). Additionally, following his appointment as President TTNCAA he was also appointed as the TTNCAA’s representative on the National Drug Council (NDC). The NDC reports to the Ministry of National Security and helps form the National Drug Policy while providing support for NGO’s to monitor the effectiveness of the policy Inspector Ryan’s involvement with these organizations, have also enabled him to assist employees in confronting issues and creating an environment for motivation while adding value to Petrotrin’s bottom line. With great power comes great responsibility and Inspector Ryan balances this by saying “…as it comes it is done”. He noted that it is time for the TTNCAA to lift its profile and establish closer relationships with other NGOs, create synergies to benefit the country and take advantage of opportunities presented. He believes that self-efficacy is the remedy and that each person has to be in charge of themselves while trying to positively impact others in small ways. Inspector Phillip Ryan Inspector Ryan expressed his gratitude to Petrotrin for its support and contributions to the TTNCAA over the years and looks forward to the continued partnership as he charts the way forward at the TTNCAA and NDC. The Petrotrin team extends congratulations to Inspector Phillip Ryan on this latest appointment. PetroConnect No. 157, 9 of 2015 9 Petrotrin Shares STOW- TT Learnings at Energy Chamber As Petrotrin continues to educate its contractors and support their Safe to Work in Trinidad and Tobago (STOWTT) certification, the Company is sharing lessons learned with other stakeholders in the energy sector. STOW-TT is an HSE Management System similar to the internationally recognized accreditations ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. STOW-TT Certification means that contractors have implemented safety and environmental systems that make it safe for them to work in any of the energy companies within Trinidad and Tobago. On 2015 September 30, Petrotrin’s Manager, Health, Safety and the Environment Mr. Shyam Dyal, who is also the Company’s representative on the STOW-TT Board, shared Petrotrin’s experience in implementing STOW-TT and facilitating the certification of its contractors during a luncheon hosted by the Energy Chamber at Cara Suites, Claxton Bay. The Chamber luncheon was attended by approximately 80 small contractors operating in the local energy industry. In his presentation, Mr. Dyal noted that meeting the different HSE requirements of energy operators was sometimes difficult and costly for contractors. He said the STOWTT certification offered a key benefit as it was compliant with the OSH Act 2004 (as amended 2006) and the Environmental Management Act 2000. Additionally, attaining this certification resulted in overall improvements to general HSE performance across the board with a visible reduction in the number of injuries and fatalities. STOWTT provides a minimum industrystandard HSE benchmark with which operators can associate with confidence. Petrotrin, in its commitment to the principles of sustainable development and management of all risks to employees, stakeholders and the environment, made its STOW-TT Requirement mandatory for all contractors awarded jobs in the category of High Risk Works and Services within the battery limits of the Pointea-Pierre Refinery. This requirement was made effective 2015 June 30. To facilitate contractors’ certification and offset their costs of setting up an HSE Management system, Petrotrin’s HSE team developed a generic Safe to Work manual which it has shared with contractors and made available on its website. “This is available FREE of charge to our contractors and it is also available on the Energy Chamber website. Using a generic manual like this would help to offset the consultant fee for developing a manual such as this,” Dyal said. “It is important though for contractors to understand that STOW-TT is not just a paper system. It is a system that each company/ contractor can use to ensure that employees are more trained and competent in HSE and risk management practices.” Resumption of Water Injection in the Trinmar Main Field Waterflood Water injection in the Petrotrin Trinmar Operations Main Field Waterflood was restarted in 2015 May and is currently averaging 10,000 barrels of water per day (bwpd). The Water Injection Plant (WIP) had been inactive since 2013 September and required significant repair work to bring it back into service. The repair works included: Purchase and installationof two (2) source pumps Repair and reinstallation of two (2) gas driven injection pumps Generator repairs Cleaning and repacking of three (3) media filters Cleaning and repacking of the deoxygenating tower Repair and alignment of vacuum and booster pumps Cleaning of chemical tanks and lines Infrastructure work on gratings and in control room • • • • • • • • In addition to these work on the WIP, extensive wireline work, inclusive of feeler runs and BHP surveys were performed on the producers and injectors of the waterflood. An outstanding report of the individual well water injection volumes was also completed for the period 2000-2013. This important milestone was achieved through the dedication and team work of personnel from the Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Production Operations, Mechanical, Electrical, Wireline, Infrastructure and Data Management Departments. The Project is being led by Ms. Terri Crawford of the Reservoir Engineering Department and project support is being provided by the Energy Solutions Group (ESG) Team. The team remains committed to the effective management of the Petrotrin Trinmar Operations Main Field Waterflood and is currently working towards increasing production and reserves from this project. The focus will continue to be on the following key areas: Repair and reinstallation of a third gas driven injection pump Efficient water injection and oil production measurement Proper reservoir management aimed at increasing production and reserves over the short and long term Chemical treatments to optimize performance of existing injectors and producers PetroConnect No. 157, 9 of 2015 11 • • • • Chow Down Petrotrin hosted its first ever Chow Down Competition on 2015 Friday August 28 at the Car Park of the Pointe-a-Pierre Club. Alrick Sherwood, a Petrotrin retiree, recalls the atmosphere at work as being a happy one when the country was granted independence in 1962 and adds that all employees hoped for change and looked forward to building the Company together. He reminisces on how different working duties were at that time in comparison to today. “Before Independence it was much harder because everything was manual labour…like everytime you have to lift a pipe or so, six or seven men would lift the pipe and tote it,” Mr. Sherwood noted. Independence has also paved the way for Petrotrin to become a fully local and state owned enterprise. In 1969 the Government of Trinidad & Tobago made its first venture into national ownership of an oil company having engaged in a joint venture with Tesoro Corporation; one of our predecessor companies, to acquire the local assets of British Petroleum. Deanne Durity-Voisin of PetrotrinTrinmar Operations recalls when she joined Trinmar Limited in 1977 it was a consortium made up by the locally owned Trintoc along with Texaco and Tesoro; all predecessor companies who each held a 1/3 stake in the Company. She noted that a few years later the first local General Manager of Trinmar, Mr. Kenneth Birchwood was appointed which engendered a sense of pride amongst employees knowing that the Company was becoming more local. As the years went by Petrotrin made major investments into the infrastructural development of its assets. David Superville of Mechanical Services recollected that in 1995 the Company upgraded its refinery and constructed new plants. He added, “One of the major changes to the landscape was in 2005, the GOP (Gasoline Optimization Project)… new plants were constructed like the Isomerization Plant and the CCR.Petrotrin also constructed and replaced two aging plants: ALKY and CARP along with a major upgrade to the FCCU to improve its reliability and performance.” In addition to these Mr. Superville mentioned a change in the Company’s compensation package, noting that it has become more attractive. He also emphasized the thrust by the Company to improve its safety and environmental practices and the improvement in its stakeholder relationships that has evolved over the years. Through the passage of time our predecessor companies have contributed greatly to sporting programmes, community development and the preservation of our nation’s culture. This good corporate philanthropy tradition is continued by Petrotrin as part of its commitment to the citizens of our beloved Trinidad & Tobago. 14 PetroConnect No. 157, 9 of 2015 Shanmatie Persad of the Environmental Management Authority in discussion with Manager- Projects, Exploration and Production Dexter Daniel Regulatory agencies visit Soldado Field Thirty-two representatives from a number of regulatory agencies accompanied Petrotrin personnel on August 6, on a visit to the South West Soldado Field.
