GUEST COUNTRY TURKEY
Europalia has always shown the most diverse cultures. Initially these were mainly European
countries, but in the recent past the horizon has been extended to cultures like Russia, India,
Brazil and China. As the fastest growing economy in Europe, Turkey is frequently mentioned in
the same breath as these growth countries.
Turkey is indeed becoming an increasingly important economic player on the world stage. Recent years have brought low inflation, a young and well-educated workforce and a favourable
climate for foreign investors. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, tourism makes a substantial contribution to the country’s GDP. The richness of its culture partly
accounts for Turkey’s popularity among tourists.
Turkey is often called a cradle of civilizations. Since the earliest prehistoric times Anatolia has
served as a bridge between Europe and Asia. Few other countries have known such a large
number of civilizations succeed one another or exist side by side. Down the centuries this has
fuelled intercultural cross-fertilization. So standing as it does at the crossroads of Asian and
European cultures and as a blossoming scene of powerful art expressions, Turkey is the ideal
candidate for this jubilee edition.
The choice of Turkey as the guest country is also an opportunity for us to strengthen our ties
with Belgium’s large Turkish community. Initiatives are under way to involve Turkish Belgians in
the programme and to have the European public discover the country’s unseen cultural richness.
Enough reasons for taking a close look at this fascinating country...

ARTS
INTRODUCTION
EUROPALIA TURKEY will be a laboratory. A laboratory for our new mission where, alongside the customary cultural
heritage projects and contemporary events, we will accelerate forward the notions of creation and exchange.
On 6 October, the festival will open in the Centre for Fine Arts with the central heritage exhibition, Anatolia. Home of
Eternity. Turkey is so rich in cultural heritage that we could have made it easy for ourselves by building an exhibition
around the treasures of this or that museum or archaeological site. But then we wouldn’t be EUROPALIA; we always
want to go one step further and find a theme that will introduce our guest country in all its diversity, a theme that
stimulates new inquiry. That’s how we arrived at the theme of rituals, viewed over a period of no less than 12,000
years, from the earliest Anatolian civilisations right up to and including the Ottoman Empire. An intensive research
that has resulted in a fascinating and unique picture of Turkey, with artworks from 30 Turkish collections.
For the opening exhibition, we made a conscious decision to look beyond Istanbul, but of course we haven’t ignored
Turkey’s most evocative city. Istanbul is the focus of different projects, starting with two other major exhibitions:
Imagine Istanbul in Bozar and Port City Talks / Istanbul-Antwerp in the MAS. The first looks at Istanbul through the
eyes of photographers and captures the fascination and inspiration they draw from this legendary metropolis. We
show how the burgeoning art of photography was immediately adopted by Constantinople and showcase the work
of Turkey’s greatest photographers, culminating with the greatest of them all, Ara Güler. We’re also sending our own
photographer Bieke Depoorter and sound artist Débruit to Istanbul to create new work in response to the exhibition.
But Henri Cartier-Bresson is not overlooked, nor is Sophie Calle, Orhan Pamuk and lots of other authors as well as
film makers and musicians.
In the MAS, we shine a spotlight on Istanbul as a port city. Drawing the comparison with Antwerp, this exhibition
explores what a port and the presence of water means for a city. How such a city is inhabited, traversed, and built…
For the first time in Belgium, archaeological remains from Yenikapı, Istanbul’s oldest port in use between the 4th and
11th centuries, will be on display. An exhibition in which objects are placed in a multimedia setting that will attract
both young and old visitors.
Also in Antwerp, the M HKA is dedicating an exhibition to Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin. This artist, who died in 2007, left
an oeuvre that has played and still plays a key role in contemporary Turkish art. We are delighted that his work will
be shown in Belgium. The exhibition at the M HKA is part of a small but powerful series within our festival that brings
internationally renowned Turkish artists to Belgium where they are rarely if ever exhibited; a great opportunity to
discover their work. As well as Alptekin, this series features two great women artists, Ayşe Erkmen and Gülsün
Karamustafa. Erkmen will enter into dialogue with Ann-Veronica Janssens at the SMAK, while at the Centrale for
Contemporary Art and Argos, Karamustafa will encounter Koen Theys and Kasper Bosmans. Our focus on creation
and exchange is clearly visible here, but also, and above all, in numerous residencies such as –and not least– that
of Gauthier Oushoorn who is not only visiting Istanbul but also the region around Mardin to develop new work for
the CID in Grand Hornu.
Creation and exchange also bring us to other disciplines. Let’s first have a look at literature and film.
8
ARTS
During her residency in Istanbul, Pascale Fonteneau will meet the crime writer Ahmet Ümit. They will confront
each other’s visions of Brussels and Istanbul. The duo will be joined by a small (not many writers are translated into
Dutch or French) but diverse number of authors who will present and debate their work with fellow writers. Turkish
filmmakers are also coming to show their work in Belgium, including a retrospective at Flagey in collaboration with
the Cinematek of one of Turkey’s greatest cineastes and winner of the Golden Bear, Semih Kaplanoğlu. And we will
not overlook Nuri Bilge Ceylan, winner of the Golden Palm in 2014 and honour him with a film retrospective and a
photography exhibition (C-Mine, Genk).
The creation and exchange of Jef Neve and NOHlab (a digital artists’ collective with amongst others CandaŞ SiŞman)
brings us to music. They are collaborating on a unique project for Flagey in which Neve’s music will be accompanied
by NOHlab’s cutting edgemotion design. Also the fusion jazz percussionist, Okay Temiz, has accepted the challenge
of working with La Fanfare du Belgistan in a project that will travel from Brussels to Utrecht, London and Paris. The
legendary Turkish composer Mustafa Özkent, who studied in Brussels during the 1970s, will for the first time in 40
years tour Belgium with an occasional band (including stops at the AB in collaboration with Les Ateliers Claus). The
fans of electronic music will be spoilt with a new album by Débruit and an exquisite selection of Turkish electronic
music artists.
Of course, traditional music also features strongly on the programme. We are proud to welcome Jordi Savall and the
Hesperion XXI Ensemble to EUROPALIA TURKEY with Istanbul 1710, but also delighted to bring lesser-known Turkish music ensembles such as the Borusan Quartet to our venues. We also find it important to support a number of
existing initiatives and to cater to the Turkish community in Belgium by bringing pop legends from their native land.
As such, we are collaborating with Istanbul Ekspres, a festival taking place since 2006 in De Centrale in Ghent, now
with the active participation of the Handelsbeurs (Ghent).
For the performing arts, we mainly give priority to dance. Young dancers will take tradition into their own hands,
such as Kadir Amigo Memis who combines traditional Anatolian Zeybek music with breakdance in Zeybreak. Or Ziya
Azazi who is bringing his interpretation of the whirling dervishes to Brussels, Liège and Valenciennes. The French
choreographer Christian Rizzo also takes inspiration from traditional Turkish music and dance for his D’après une
histoire vraie with the Turkish dancer Kerem Gelebek. For the theatre we are focusing on Karagöz, offering both traditional and contemporary versions of Turkish shadow play.
We will not deny that certain aspects of the Turkish arts are missing in this programme. To be complete is impossible
and is not our goal. With this programme, we do try and give a divers image of a strong artistic scene, with lots of
space for creation and dialogue between artists from different fields and disciplines.
THIS CURRENT PROGRAMME MIGHT BE SUBJECT TO MODIFICATIONS.

HERITAGE
Anatolia has long been a bridge between Europe and Asia, where numerous migrations have resulted in a fascinating cultural exchange. It is perhaps the greatest cradle of cultures in the world and has an extraordinarily rich
heritage, thanks to an uninterrupted and twelve millennia-long succession of civilisations. However different these
civilisations were, it is remarkable how cults and rituals were passed down, some even to this day.
This continuity of cults and rituals form the leitmotiv of the exhibition, which is divided into four themes: the cosmos; nature; the world of gods; and divine interventions. Each theme spans 12 millennia of rituals, from the earliest
Anatolian civilisations to the Ottoman Empire. More than 200 objects, many of which have never been shown before, from more than 30 museums from the remotest corners of Turkey will illustrate the diverse, opulent Anatolian
heritage and will introduce the art of the guest country.
The first chapter encompasses the religious interpretation of the cosmos and the veneration of celestial bodies in
multiple Anatolian cultures. We will show, for instance, remarkable ritual objects from the Alacahöyük site (Bronze
Age) from the Museum for Anatolian Civilisations (Ankara), carvings and sculptures from classical antiquity from the
Archeological Museums of Istanbul, but also miniatures and artworks from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods from the
Topkapı Palace, illustrating the worship of the heavens, constellations, sun and moon from the earliest civilisations
onwards.
The second chapter looks at the worship of natural phenomena (mountains, rock formations, springs, rivers, fountains) and the rituals performed to ensure the annual regeneration of nature. Reliefs or sculptures of river gods,
nymphs and the tree of life illustrate nature’s central place in the rich artistic expression of the different civilisations
and religions that succeeded each other on Anatolian soil, from the Bronze Age until the Ottoman period.
The third chapter addresses the divine. We show the evolution from the oldest schematic images of man (10th
millennium BC), via Neolithic mother goddesses in terracotta and aniconic stone idols (3rd millennium BC), to the
correct anthropomorphic representations of divine beings. Perfect body shapes and an accurate representation of
movement were only seen as of the 5th century BC in representations of Olympian gods.
This section also includes typical ‘oriental’ representations of deities: winged divine beings, animal gods, ‘Betyls’
(e.g., the famous Artemis of Ephesus) and the local Neo-Hittite goddess, Kubaba. She was later transformed into the
goddess Cybele, who from the 2nd century BC, was one of the most important protective goddesses of Rome and
whose cult spread throughout the Empire.
Within monotheistic religions, we show how the first Christians coped with pagan idols and imagery, and how the
image of Christ evolved over time. Given the prohibition in Islam to depict Allah and the Prophet, the Turkish Seljuks
and Ottomans replaced imagery with calligraphic representations of their names through so-called ‘word portraits’

or images of the Prophet’s feet or sandals. But within Turkish Islam – especially under the Seljuks – we see greater
tolerance towards images of humans and animals in sophisticated secular architecture and crafts. We will exhibit
refined mosque furniture and cult objects, as well as exquisite miniatures and textiles from different periods.
The places of worship of diverse Anatolian civilisations are also illustrated, based on the architectural remains of
temples, Byzantine churches and mosques, elements from their interiors and exclusively, objects used in worship.
We pay equal attention to offerings and altars, religious festivals and games, and to the phenomenon of pilgrimage,
which has continued uninterrupted from classical antiquity to the present day Hadj.
The fourth and last section looks at divine interventions in the world of humans. This includes among others, gods,
saints and rituals ascribed with healing powers and how for centuries humans have tried to protect themselves
against misfortune, including the Evil Eye. We also look at the relationship between religion and politics, with the
personification and deification of ancient cities, and the cults of both living and deceased rulers, with masterpieces
that illustrate the cult of Roman Caesars. To conclude, exclusive objects show how the rulers of both Byzantine and
Ottoman courts demonstrated their superiority over their subjects via court ceremonies and ceremonial attire.

HERITAGE CONTEMPORARY CREATION EXCHANGE
Istanbul is a catalyst of cultural processes that has constantly changed its meaning, significance and appearance. Istanbul perpetually evolves and continues to defy a single representation, a defining telling or any generalisation. Istanbul therefore is an indefatiguable muse.
‘Imagine Istanbul’ looks at some defining artists of 20th century Turkish photography – but
also music, cinema and literature- to illustrate how these art forms shaped the way we see this
city. It explores a series of photographic revelations, bodies of work that move alongside the
dividing waters of the city.
To start, a separate section with examples from 19th Century Istanbul photography illustrates
how, from the very early start of the medium, the photographer desires and needs Istanbul.
Unseen photos from the magnificent Koç collection reveal precurser imagery of what we consider
comtemporary photography.
The core of the exhibition is Ara Güler, «The Eye
of Istanbul», unquestionably Turkey’s most significant photographer of the 20th century. He is the
fundemental artist then and now, the benchmark
of a whole school of photography. All photography
that followed Ara Güler and his school were either
in agreement with it or made a conscious effort
to escape from it. He has produced an enormous
body of work over the past three quarters of a century, so exhaustive that there are several Istanbuls
that no longer exist that he has recorded. They
have become subjects in the astounding forensics
of photography. Ara Güler is a photographer, artist, journalist, historian. He accepts only the ‘journalist’ but prefers the ‘historian’ and denies the ‘artist’. His importance is hard to overestimate. Orhan
Pamuk, Turkey’s Nobel laureate for literature, has

written:
‘’ ... Ara Güler’s greatest achievement is to have preserved for many millions a visual memoir
that captures the city in all its richness and poetry. Every time I look at the details in Güler’s
Istanbul photographs, I want to rush to my desk to write about the city.’’
Ara Güler’s work will be followed by a wider investigation of new and forward-looking or new
and past-embracing photography which characterises the Turkish photography of today.
One of these will be a substantial selection of the work of Ali Taptık, who can be described as
the antithesis to Ara Güler. We could say that Istanbul needed Ali Taptık. It needed the gaze he
brought to the ever-emerging cityscape which for him was a constantly emerging self-portrait
of contemporary Turkey. His work is not a critique of Istanbul, it is an intimate interaction with it.
Ahmet Polat will be another contemporary photographer whose work the exhibition will explore. He is an artist who has built a body of work on the polarity of family background. He has
Turkish-Dutch origins (he recently won the prestigious ‘Fotograaf des Vaderlands’ award in the
Netherlands) and he has a keen awareness of the dichotomy of his aesthetic and conceptual
approaches. His work is a combination of commentory and confession.
Last but not least, the photographic work of Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be presented. Ceylan is
better known in Europa as a film director (he won the 2014 Golden Palm in Cannes for his film
Winter Sleep), but his photography is as extraordinary as his cinematographic work, with an
almost painterly sense of both composition and the subtly dramatic play of light.
‘Imagine Istanbul’ is a journey of photographic encounters that are testimony to the immense
power of Istanbul to confront, challenge and seduce. Music, cinema, literature as well as installations by contemporary artists such as Ayşe Erkmen, Sophie Calle and Kasper Bosmans
dialogue with the different photographers. There is no attempt to be a comprehensive survey
but more, a demonstration of the universiality of Istanbul.
In the frame of the exhibition, two artists are given the opportunity to create new work: Débruit and Bieke Depoorter. Both
artists travel to Istanbul for a residency. The new album by
Débruit, with recorded material in Istanbul will be premiered
in the exhibition. Depoorter’s new photographic work, shot in
Istanbul, will be shown in Bozar’s Horta hall.

Bieke Depoorter
Bieke Depoorter received her Master’s degree in Photography from the
Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent. She mainly works on autonomous projects. In 2009, she travelled through Russia, taking photos of
the people with whom she stayed. The resulting series, ‘Ou Menya’, won
many prizes, including a Magnum Expression Award. Lannoo published
her first book of photographs. A similar project in the United States resulted in her second book, ‘I am about to call it a day’, published in 2014.

Depoorter is currently working on ‘In Between’, an intimate series about Egyptian families. She became a Nominee
Member of Magnum in 2012 and an Associate Member in 2014.
Débruit - Istanbul Sessions
Over the years, traditional and non-traditional world music has become
an integral part of much modern Western music. African and oriental
influences from the 1960s and ‘70s are, for example, still very common in
rock and dance music. They contribute to fascinating, new music.
Xavier Thomas aka Débruit is an international composer, producer, and
instrumentalist known for his adventurous live performances. He crosses futuristic world music with exciting beats
and colourful synths. His unique style is heard across the world and his last album with the Sudanese singer Alsarah
climbed high in the Top 10 of best world music albums of 2013.
In the framework of the exhibition Imagine Istanbul, Débruit will be in residence to record a conceptual album
featuring the city sounds and music of Istanbul. His field recordings and collaboration with different artists from
the EUROPALIA programme will form an integral part of his next album. An exclusive preview can be heard at the
exhibition.
This project spans the musical heritage and exhilarating present day reality of Istanbul. Moments brought together
in an imaginative interpretation of the city on the Bosphorus, in which all influences unite through collaboration with
musicians from different generations. The sounds, rhythms, and tempo of the city at different moments in time, but
always in one place. Traditional, visionary, electric, psychedelic, futuristic, melodic or experimental, Débruit develops a new vision of the exciting and captivating Istanbul.

PORT CITY TALKS. ISTANBUL-ANTWERP

MAS | Museum Aan de Stroom - Antwerpen
HERITAGE - CONTEMPORARY
The MAS takes you on a journey through the Bosporus & Golden Horn to Istanbul; the legendary
city in Turkey and a place to stir the imagination. The exhibition Port City Talks / IstanbulAntwerp focuses on the decisive role played by the water in Istanbul’s development through
centuries to date, highlighting certain points it has in common with Antwerp.
Where water and land meet, civilizations meet up –places where people trade goods, gain
access to different worlds and exchange ideas while absorbing diversities. These human
interactions, combined with the port infrastructures and new materials such as steel and
concrete play an important role in the development of the city and its surrounding area. This
is the case in Antwerp and in Istanbul, basically a passage between continents and important
ports in history.
Istanbul is literally the crossing point between Asia and Europe. For centuries, the port has
been seen as the gateway to the East. On the other hand, Antwerp has emerged from being a
port city on a river to a leading world port: a gateway to the rest of the world. Both cities have
been known for centuries for their bustling commerce and political influence.
The exhibition Port City Talks / Istanbul-Antwerp will motivate the audience to walk through
the traces of Istanbul, discovering art works and artefacts from different centuries and
using multimedia installations, and to discover the Bosporus, its inlet Golden Horn and their

hinterland. At the same time, the relation between Istanbul and Antwerp will be explored and
the viewer will be invited for individual experiences and inspirations.
The first part of the exhibition will show for the very first time in Belgium a selection of
archeological objects from Yenikapı, the oldest harbor of Istanbul, in use between the 4th and
11th Century. The following chapters will explore the way people live and travel in both cities
and will treat the bridges and tunnels, with Istanbul being famous for its bridges and Antwerp
more for its tunnels, the ships, the shipyards and the docks and decks. Objects will come from
Turkish and Belgian museums and private collections. A series of digital artists will also create
new work for the exhibition and its undoubtedly unusual, promising design.
In the frame of Port City Talks, a contemporary Turkish artist will come to AIR Antwerp for a

GÜLSÜN KARAMUSTAFA - KOEN THEYS
29 10 ‘15 - 28 02 ‘16
Centrale for Contemporary Art & Argos - Brussels
CONTEMPORARY - EXCHANGE
Curators : Carine Fol & Rolf Quaghebeur
Gülsün Karamustafa lives and works in Istanbul. She mainly works around the themes of
mobility, displacement, relocation and migration, and creates paintings, collages, installations
and video.
Koen Theys casts a highly critical eye on our society and its contradictions. He works primarily
– but not exclusively – with his favourite medium: video. He was one of the Belgian pioneers in
this field.
These two internationally renowned artists use common themes to question “high and low
culture” and the place of the individual in a society undergoing constant change and evolution.
They confront the spectator with videos that are simultaneously culturally anchored (parades,
traditional painting) and offer a critical reading of social change as reflections of social and
cultural memory.

HÜSEYİN BAHRİ ALPTEKİN. DEMOCRATIC LUXURY
15 10 ‘15 - 31 01 ‘16
M HKA - Antwerpen
CONTEMPORARY
Curator : Nav Haq
Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin was fascinated by the difference between the promise of something
and the banal reality:
for example how the name of a cheap hotel can simulate an exotic location. He was also a
traveller, studious of forms of feral capitalism in places considered the fringes of western
modernity.
Alptekin is considered one of the most significant figures of his generation in the established
contemporary art scene of Istanbul. This exhibition will be a thematic survey of his work,
bringing together a key selection of art produced during the two decades either side of the new
millennium, including photographs, sculptures, installation, neon text, videos and collages, ...
Media often reflecting “global junk”.
Though Alptekin exhibited a lot across Europe, his work has never been exhibited at all in
Belgium. His practice can also be contextualised through parallels between his work and other
key figures that M HKA has long-term engagements with, such as with Alan Sekula who also
considered the movement of people and objects under the conditions of globalisation, or
Jimmie Durham who broadly considers the politics of otherness.

AYŞE ERKMEN & ANN VERONICA JANSSENS
07 11 ‘15 - 14 02 ‘16
S.M.A.K. - Ghent
CONTEMPORARY - EXCHANGE
Curator : Philippe Van Cauteren
Ayşe Erkmen and Ann Veronica Janssens, two leading international artists, are commissioned
by the city of Ghent to create a work of art for the public space in the historic center. By
the end of 2015, each of them will install a vertical sculpture from 17 to 21 meter high on the
Korenmarkt. Both artistic projects will be integrated into the redevelopment of the square by
the architects Robbrecht & Daem and Marie-Josée van Hee.
The artistic practice by the Turkish-German artist Ayşe Erkmen is characterized by a profound
interest in the historical and social context in which a work of art originates. Usually her
interventions respond to the existing social situations or architectural conditions and bring
facts and structures to the surface that normally remain hidden under the dense complex of
the environment.
Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens (1956, Folkestone) focuses on the sensory experience and
the particular moment in which the body meets the space. She experiments with the elusive
and brings in light, color and sound to investigate the perception of space and movement.
Visitors are invited to take part in her installations while their senses are activated to experience
the immaterial.
On the first floor of the S.M.A.K., Ann Veronica Janssens and Ayşe Erkmen each present a new,
room-filling installation and combine these with additional works.
Documentation and plans about their projects for the Korenmarkt will be on view in separate
cabinets. With this exhibition aims S.M.A.K. to situate the commissions for the Korenmarkt
within the broader, richer context of the oeuvre of both artists and to support the choice of the
city for high quality art in the public space.

KARAGÖZ
30 10 ‘15 - 24 01 ‘16
Malmundarium - Malmédy
HERITAGE
Curator : Cengiz Özek
During the golden days of Istanbul, the traditional shadow
puppet theatre Karagöz - literally «the black eye» - could be
seen on street corners and in squares, where all-round artists
entertained the Ottoman audience with shadow puppet
comedies. This name comes from the protagonist, Karagöz,
a popular illiterate. Accompanied by his best friend Hacivat, highly educated and elitist, he holds
an ironic mirror up to Istanbul. This is illustrated through stereotypes of the Ottoman Empire (the
aristocrat, the Greek, the Frenchman, the lady and the gentleman) and we encounter many shamanic
characters (the witch, the demon, the spirit). The exhibition, curated by the puppet master Cengiz
Özek, gives an overview of all the aspects of the traditional shadow puppet theater.
We see historical shadow puppets from the 18th and 19th centuries and get an insight into the craft
of doll making and the métier of doll manipulation. A literal look behind the scenes of the traditional
Turkish shadow puppet theatre.

CONTEMPORARY
Curator : Sinan Logie
From the very first human settlements until today, the
history of Anatolia has been marked by numerous waves of
transformation, revival, and re-appropriation. This dynamic
and continuous dialogue between past and present is also
reflected in the history of its architecture whose archetypical
elements (tent, minaret, column, caravanserai, etc.,) have
Sedat Hakki Eldem-SGK building Zeyrek Istanbul
endured through the ages and are still discernible today in
many contemporary creations.
This exhibition offers a unique and comparative reading of Turkish architectural history in relation to
contemporary projects via several case studies originating from different regions and eras, brought
to life in models, architectural drawings, photographs and films.

Curators : Ceren & Irmak Arkman
Turkey has a very strong multimedia and digital art scene. Since
the early nineties universities, independent organisations and
numerous happenings created a broader awareness of digital
technologies in Turkey. The opening of Visual Communication
Design departments in public and private universities has led
to an increased interest in screen based digital media.
The following artists are going to exhibit single works at Flagey: Refik Anadol, Candaş Şişman, Ozan
Türkkan, Onur Şentürk, Memo Akten, Cevdet Erek, Murat Pak, Selçuk Artut, Can Pakdemir, Deniz

THE ABSENCE OF PERMANENT I
08 11 ‘15 - 21 02 ‘16 (TBC)
CID - Hornu
CREATION - EXCHANGE
The young Brussels artist Gauthier Oushoorn bases his
project on Nader Ardalan’s book ‘The Sense of Unity’, a
study of the conceptual and symbolic importance of Islamic
architecture. Central to this is the Sufi esoteric principle of
unity in multiplicity – traditional Persian thought on form. The
first chapter of this project takes place in Istanbul and Mardin,
where in situ interventions are based on the theme of ‘surface’.
© Gauthier Oushoorn
The artist/architect expresses himself unconsciously; he is
merely a vehicle for the realization. This is followed by a second chapter in Belgium, at the Centre
d’Innovation et de Design (CID) on the Grand Hornu site. The museum and the description of the
book function as one macrocosm. The microcosm is the organisation within, created in the first
chapter.

The standard of living is often used to compare geographic
areas, such as the standard of living in the United States
versus Turkey, or the standard of living in Los Angeles
versus Brussels. The standard of living can also be used to
compare distinct points in time. For example, compared
with a century ago, the standard of living in the United
States has improved greatly. The same amount of work

buys an increased quantity of goods, and items that were
once luxuries, such as carpets and paintings, are now widely available. As well, leisure time and
life expectancy have increased, and annual hours worked have decreased. All these endeavors
of quantifying a standard become in the end an aesthetic layering of location and is tinted
perhaps by the feeling of estrangement, of objects and practice taken out of their “natural”
environments and into new chosen locations, eras and desires.
VAAST COLSON & DENNIS TYFUS
28 11 ‘15 - 31 01 ‘16
Frans Masereel Centrum - Kasterlee
CREATION - EXCHANGE
Vaast Colson and Dennis Tyfus started in 2010 ‘Gunther’, an artist-run-space in the shopping
district of Antwerp. In Autumn, they will leave together to Istanbul for a residency. Both artists
will develop together a new project for the Frans Masereelcentrum in Kasterlee.
Vaast Colson (b. 1977) lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. His work steers effortlessly around
profile, strategy and materialisation. It seeks out peripheral places and moments where images
arise, mainly by social interaction. These images depend on the circumstances, which are
unpredictable, complex and often momentary. Colson repeatedly puts himself in a situation or
an installation in which he entertains, surprises and instructs his audience. Collaboration with
other artists is of primary interest in his artistic practice.
Dennis Tyfus (Antwerp, 1979) draws, paints, takes photographs, makes films, plays noise music,
sings, parodies, produces gramophone records and CDs, creates books and magazines,
has a programme on Radio Centraal, makes collages, and lodges his oeuvre under the Ultra
Eczemalabel.

In this concert, the Konya Turkish Sufi Music Ensemble and the
Sama Ensemble perform traditional Mevlevi rituals. The Mevleviye or Mevlevî Order is a Sufi order founded
in Konya, the former capital of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultante. From 1273 the order spread across the entire
Ottoman Empire. Today, one can find the order in almost all Turkish communities throughout the world.
The Mevlevi Order is famous for its mesmerising whirling dance of Dervishes or Sufi monks. The Sama
ritual is a physical way to reach a higher degree of spirituality. The dizziness felt by the Dervishes during
their endless whirling at high speed, with one hand extended to the cosmos and the other to earth, is a
profoundly spiritual experience. The whirling symbolises the way electrons and planets revolve. Since
2005, the Sama ceremony is designated as UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Although relatively unknown, the Turkish composer, arranger and musician, Mustafa Özkent, is nonetheless an
important figure in the Turkish music scene. Western audiences discovered his music late, more than 40 years after
the beginning of his career.
Özkent started his musical career in 1960 with the Turkish pop group Teenagers in Ankara. The name of the band
was very appropriate because none of its members was older than 19. He later formed his own group, the Mustafa
Özkent Orkestrasi and as well as several singles he released the album Gençlik Ile Elele. He is a talented guitarist who
was and still is known for altering the design of his instruments in order to create unusual sounds.
Özkent quickly earned a reputation as a gifted maverick and in the early 1970s he was not only in demand as a
session player, arranger and producer, but he also studied in Brussels with Baris Manco. He made dozens of Turkish
albums that merged psychedelic and pop/rock melodies with R&B grooves and jazz-inspired improvisations. From
that moment, Mustafa’s work continued to evolve, and he influenced Turkish pop music more than he could ever
have imagined. At that time, an instrumental album like Gençlik Ile Elele was relatively hard to find here. But in 2006,
thanks to the record collectors Finders Keepers Records, Özkent’s masterwork was re-released. And especially for
EUROPALIA TURKEY, the album is brought to life on stage in partnership with a dynamic Belgian group, specifically
formed for this occasion.

Passage is a concert about time. About Sufis who see earthly life as waiting for the afterlife, about not

ISTANBUL EKSPRES
A musical journey through a sultry metropolis. A collaboration between two Ghent music houses, De
Centrale and the Handelsbeurs Concert Hall.
50 years ago, hundreds of Turks came to Belgium on the invitation of the Belgian government. For many
of them, Ghent became their new home. This coloured the city in several ways: local gourmets could
savour delicious mezze or baklava, vibrant fabrics and carpets appeared for sale in the Sleepstraat and
traditional Anatolian music resounded at exuberant wedding parties. People also flew in from Morocco
and to a lesser extent Central Africa. In this way, Ghent became a melting pot comparable to Istanbul.
Ghent’s multicultural society has a long history, with deep roots in the social and cultural life of the city.
The mixture of, among others, Turks, Greeks, Armenians, Kurds and Jews has a strong influence on the
music culture.
During 10 days, Istanbul Ekspres will paint a picture of what’s happening in this musical hothouse.
Turkish pop and rock, oriental jazz, festive Balkan, Ottoman and Anatolian music… The festival puts a
major focus on collaboration between Belgian and Turkish musicians. You will be served up a wealth of
experiences. Enjoy!

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
TRADITIONAL TURKISH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Turkish folk music consists of complex melodic structures (makam), embellishment and
improvisation (taksim). These techniques are applied to all traditional forms of music: secular
music, military music, music in mosques and Islamic music. Traditional percussion, wind and
string instruments have been used for centuries in Turkish folk music. A short introduction.
String instruments
Kanun
The kanun descends from the ancient Egyptian harp and belongs to the
zither family. The instrument consists of a flat trapezoidal soundboard with
a right angle and is often beautifully decorated. 78 or 81 strings are strung
across the soundboard in groups of three. The strings are played with the
fingers or with a plectrum. The pitch can be changed, even while playing,
via tuning pegs. The kanun is played in Turkey, Central Asian Turkic Republics as well as the whole Middle
Eastern Countries.
Bağlama
The saz or bağlama is a long-necked lute that is played in the folk music of
Central Asia to the Balkans. Turkish nomads originally brought the bağlama
to Anatolia, where it is still played today. In the villages of Central and Eastern
Anatolia, one or more bağlamas can be found in almost every household,
but also on the yaylaks, the highland pastures of the Mediterranean and
Black Sea. In Turkish music, the bağlama is the instrument of the ancient Asik tradition of troubadours,
the Sufi music of the Alevis and many other forms of folk music. The instrument is also used in modern
music. In the Turkish vernacular, the bağlama is called saz, meaning ‘instrument’.
Oud
The oud (also: ud, ut, outi, oed) is a fretless string instrument of the
same family as the lute, which is why it is sometimes called the ‘Arabic
or Oriental lute’. It usually has five double strings and one single
string (the lowest), and a short neck with a slightly bent pegboard.
The sound box is pear-shaped and typically has one to three sound
holes in the form of rosettes. The instrument is played in North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey,
Greece and Armenia. There are minor regional differences in size and pitch.
53
Tanbur
The tanbur is a plucked instrument, a lute with a long neck and 48
frets. The tanbur is characteristic of Turkish folk music: it was once
the most important instrument of the Ottoman court. Because of its
extremely long neck and the great distance the left hand must span, it
does not easily lend itself to solo playing. Because of this, the tanbur
was gradually displaced by lutes with shorter necks and multiple melody strings, such as the
baglama and the kopuz.
Tar
The tar is a Turkish folk music instrument played with a plectrum. It
is widely used in the Kars region, but also found in Azerbaijan, Iran,
Uzbekistan and Georgia. The tar consists of two ‘bowls’ of different
sizes made from mulberry wood. There are two main groups of
strings on the tar: the first is used for playing a tune consisting of
three groups of two chords. The second group is called kök and is used to enhance the tone.
Kemençe
The kemençe or keman is a bowed instrument, or three-stringed
violin. The kemençe does not have an illustrious past, but it is still
considered the most important bowed instrument in Persian music,
where it is known as ‘kamancheh’. The kemençe traditionally had three
silk strings, but today it commonly has four metal strings. Although
played like a cello, the kemençe is considered to be the violin of the Middle East.
Wind instruments
Ney
The Turkish and Arabic ney has no mouthpiece. It is played by placing
the mouth at an angle of 45 degrees at the end of the flute. An Iranian
ney player will place the end of the instrument between his teeth
and control the air with his tongue, which produces a very different
sound. The ney is the most important solo instrument in Sufi ritual
music, and one of the oldest instruments in the world. A distant ancestor of the flute, it plays a
prominent role in Turkish and Arabic music.
Kaval
The kaval is a pastoral wind instrument originating from the Balkans
and Turkey. This shepherd’s flute consists of a long, straight wooden
cylinder with eight playing holes, without a mouthpiece. The kaval is
open at both ends and is played by blowing at an angle of 45 degrees
on the sharpened edge of one end. The timbre is similar to that of a
transverse flute, but slightly more hoarse.
54
Zurna
The zurna (Turkey, Armenia) or zurla (Balkans) is a double reed oboe
that is mostly accompanied by drums. The instrument has a sharp
sound and is traditionally played outdoors. It is related to the Moroccan
raita, the Chinese suona and the Breton bombard. The zurna is one
of the oldest double reed instruments in the world, together with the
duduk, which has a slightly softer timbre.
Duduk
The Armenian duduk is a double reed woodwind instrument with
a cylindrical body made from Armenian apricot wood and a large
double reed called the ghamish.
Percussion instruments
Darbuka
The darboeka is an Egyptian percussion instrument found in almost
all Arab countries and Turkey. It has the form of a vase and is made
from various materials (metal, wood, terracotta, plastic…)
Davul
The davul is a membranophone, a two-headed drum from Turkey.
The drum is hung over the shoulder and played on both sides with
different sticks.
Nakkare
Nakkare are membranophones. Two clay drums are attached to each
other. Each drum has a membrane that is played with the fingers or
hands.
Kudüm
Kudüm is one of the most fundamental rhythm instruments in
classical Turkish music one of the four main instruments in Mevlevi
music. Traditionally this percussion instrument was played in religious
ceremonies; in a secular context, like in mehter music, its slightly
bigger cousin nakkare is played..

Ember
Since the 90’s, the dance practice of Ziya Azazi is based on experimental whirling and repetition –
a reflection of his personal, artistic and conceptual interpretation of the traditional sufi dance. Azazi
looks for a simultaneous rendering of contradictory observations: physical awareness versus ecstasy.
He experiments with the speed and the intensity of the whirling in order to turn the traditions of the
whirling derwishes into spectacular, new forms. Ember is about despair. Being aware of mortality, man
is in search of ways to give sense to life. The whirling makes the artist survive and gives sense to his
existence.

Cengiz Özek founded his shadow puppet company in 1986. Initially he brought traditional plays, but at
the end of the 1990’s, he started bringing contemporary interpretations of the ‘Karagöz’ tradition. The
Karagöz puppetry is one of the oldest art forms in Turkey, named after one of the two main characters,
an illiterate, popular man. Opposites attract, as his friend, Hacivat, is a very cultivated man, expressing
himself in Ottoman Turkish.
Magic Tree is a new, dynamic play based on classics from the 18th and 19th centuries. Every detail goes
back to the traditional Karagöz. The traditional instruments ‘narake’ en ‘def’ emphasize the drama of the
story, with very little dialogue. An ideal introduction to the Karagöz.
In Magic Lamp Hacivat finds a lamp and brings it to Karagöz. While cleaning it, a ghost appears, offering to fulfil three wishes. For this play, Cengiz Özek finds inspiration in other cultures as it is based on
Thumbelina, the famous fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen.

D’après une histoire vraie
About ten years ago, choreographer Christian Rizzo saw in Istanbul a group of men performing a traditional dance.
The deep, archaic emotion he experienced, became the impuls for a new dance performance, D’après une histoire
vraie. Rizzo uses his memories to create from the traditions of Mediterranean cultures. “I am not so much interested
in recreating an existing dance,” he says, “but I want to understand why this folk dance has such an important
influence.” Rizzo developed a dance vocabulary mixing his own contemporary dance style with age-old dance
patterns. Eight dancers perform a long, uninterrupted groupe dance. They are accompanied by musicians Didier
Ambact and King Q4, playing new creations based on tribal rythms and psychedelic rock. D’après une histoire vraie
is a dance performance bursting with beauty and energy, a homage to the pleasure of gathering.

Ad Noctum
Ad Noctum is a choreographic investigation into the duo dance, created by French Julie Guibert and Turkish Kerem
Gelebek. It is a dialogue with the darkness and the shadow. “This dance investigation is a homage to the oscure, the
invisible,” Rizzo says. “The music is a combination between Chopin’s Nocturnes and Satie, in an electronic version.”
Guibert en Gelebek, for years now the lead dancers in Rizzo’s projects, interact with digital imagery by Taiwanese
artist Iuan-Hau Chiang. The choreography is based on whirling movements, with nervous outbursts. A totem of
images, light and sound becomes a third protagonist in the complex relation between the two dancers. Ad Noctum
is the second part of the trilogy which started with D’après une histoire vraie.

Sakınan göze çöp batar
A solo created for Turkish dancer/performer Kerem Gelebek, with whom Christian Rizzo has been working for several
years. The dance sequences are like a sketch book on the theme of melancholy. They are studies on movements:
a study for a man in a corner, for a man sitting at a table, for a man with a green plant... Rizzo tries and express
Gelebek’s emigration story. The title is a Turkish proverb warning that being too careful and closed provokes the
worst to happen. Just take life as it comes.

EUROPALIA invites the general public to attempt translating an entire children’s book from Turkish to
French and/or Dutch. We will present a previously unpublished book in Dutch and French, which we will
translate via a brand new collaborative approach.
Knowledge of Turkish is not necessary to participate since the whole purpose will be for the public to
see the work, interact with the volunteers present to help translate the work and in the end, it is all about
learning and sharing more than the outcome itself. We would work on a family friendly story fit for all
audiences. Such a project would also be key to break barriers between different communities and allow
people to learn about different processes to communicate, including translation.

COLLABORATION WITH BELGIAN LIBRARIES
It has become a tradition on the occasion of the EUROPALIA festivals: libraries participate in
the project and organise events themed around the hosted country. This year again, several
library networks will take part in the celebration by offering workshops, conferences, themed
weeks, screenings of films related to Turkey. Some will also seize this opportunity to enlarge
their collections of Turkish books and films. EUROPALIA TURKEY will be celebrated all over
Belgium through the network of participating libraries.
Apart from the mentioned events, more projects will be added. We are preparing,
for instance, a literature exhibition and a collaboration with the Antwerp Book Fair.
KAROO will dedicate its October issue to Turkey.

Teaching packs
EUROPALIA is working closely with universities and colleges to develop teaching packs for
primary and secondary schools. Students on both sides of the linguistic border studying
history, art history, languages and tourism have been invited to contribute to writing these
teaching packs about Turkey.
An overview of current projects:
* The Tourism course at the ULB-IGEAT is compiling a teaching pack about Turkish culture
for primary schools.
* Three students from the aggregated Art History course at the UCL are compiling a teaching
pack about the main exhibition Anatolia. Land of rituals, and alongside this, they are also
working on the teaching pack about Turkish culture.
* Three students from the Art Sciences teacher training course at the VUB are working on a
teaching pack for lower secondary schools.
* Marie-Haps College is working on a teaching pack around the Turkish language in relation
to French, for both primary and secondary school education.
* The Language & Literature course at Ghent University is writing a teaching pack about the
Turkish language in relation to Dutch.
1 euro action
The number of school visits to museums and exhibitions has dropped dramatically in the last
30 years. EUROPALIA wants to reverse this downward trend. For the EUROPALIA INDIA festival
in 2013, we launched a special offer for schools: school groups could visit the main exhibition
for just 1 euro per pupil. This initiative proved highly successful, and the number of school
visits is once again on the rise.
This school action will be repeated for EUROPALIA TURKEY: from the tiniest pupils to young
adults, all can visit the two main exhibitions in BOZAR for just 1 euro.

MEDIA CENTRE
EUROPALIA offers young people and students the opportunity to become actively involved
in the organisation of the festival. In collaboration with art schools and journalism training
courses, a virtual ‘Media Centre’ is being set up where young people can post their
contributions: interviews, articles, video reportages, photos, images, and audio reports about
the exhibitions… The ‘Media Centre’ will show EUROPALIA TURKEY through the eyes of today’s
youth. They will be given visual, journalistic and artistic carte blanche. The best contributions
will also be included in official EUROPALIA communications.
Four colleges are taking part in this initiative: the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, La Cambre
(visual communication studies), IHECS (journalism studies) and the RITS (radio studies).
SKATEPARK
EUROPALIA TURKEY proposed the Turkish artists Esk Reyn and NUKA to repaint the Skatepark
des Ursulines (Brussels) .
These 2 artists work for the first time in collaboration with the Sk8teboarders team.
The new fresco will be inaugurated in het framework of the car-free day on 20 September
2015 and will be te bewonderen during the festival.

TURKISH ROUTES
In Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp, EUROPALIA TURKEY is organising exhibitions and lots of other artistic
events. Each of these cities is home to a relatively big Turkish community, influencing the local life.
Local organisations have developed in collaboration with Europalia city tours reflecting the Turkish anchoring and the Turkish history of these Belgian cities. Neighbourhoods will be visited, as well as Turkish
food shops and, of course, EUROPALIA TURKEY events.
The Turkish presence in Brussels: A walk around the chaussée de Haecht
The Arkadia association invites you to discover Turkish culture in Brussels during a walk between the
chaussée de Haecht and church of Saint-Josse. 220,000 Turks live in Belgium, of whom more than a
quarter in Brussels, especially in Schaerbeek and Saint-Josse. This presence has left its mark on public
space: on the chaussée de Haecht, the Fatih Camii mosque and numerous shops and restaurants with
their multi-coloured signs inspire curiosity and evoke faraway places.
Duration: 90 minutes. - in Dutch and French

Turkije aan de Leie
There are 160 different nationalities living in Ghent, but none of these communities is larger than the
Turkish: around one-tenth of all ‘Gentenaars’ have Turkish roots. On this walk we will explore the area
around the Sleepstraat and Dampoort, where the story of Turkish migration began fifty years ago and is
still highly visible today. How did the first ‘guest workers’ come to this ‘Turkey on the Leie’? What conditions did they live in and how did local residents react to their arrival? And what about integration today
in this multicultural neighbourhood?
The Turkish drum will lead us from the Sluizeken to the Grand Mosque. In stocking feet we will enter the
most important Muslim temple of Ghent to encounter the pillars of the faith and learn about daily life in
and around the mosque. A visit to the mosque is included in this walk.

TURKISH ROUTES
The Turkish in A (working title)
AntwerpenAverechts has developed an urban tour on the theme of the Turks and Turkey in
Antwerp along two tracks.
Firstly, we go in search of Turkey in Antwerp… Where has this rich, centuries-old culture left its
mark on the Scheldt City? Where can we still find historical traces and how does it continue to
thrive?
Secondly – and this fits seamlessly with the former – how do contemporary Turks in Antwerp
make their mark on the city? Who are they, what do they do and how do they view their country/
city/village of (sometimes very distant) origin and the city (and country) where they (or their
parents, grandparents) have now settled?
This exploration of historical traces and contemporary dynamics lasts between two to three
hours. Encountering Turks and Turkish culture in Antwerp is central.
Duration: 2 to 3 hours - in Dutch
