Where Cool Pacific Breezes Blow…
W
elcome to Coronado, one of the most desirable beachfront
cities of the world! Measuring only 13.5 square miles
and located just minutes from downtown San Diego, this
enchanted “island” has it all — a nearly-perfect climate, award-winning
beaches, lush parks, excellent highly ranked schools, top-notch municipal
services, and numerous recreational activities. As you drive across the
San Diego–Coronado Bay Bridge and experience the breathtaking
panoramic view of the island, you will understand why many visitors
decide to make Coronado home.
Known as an “island,” Coronado is really a peninsula connected to
the mainland by a stretch of land named the Silver Strand. It’s a friendly
beach haven with laid-back California charm linked to bustling downtown
San Diego by the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. A shuttle loops around
the island but it is small enough to walk almost anywhere. Strolling along
its tree-lined streets, you’ll notice stately mansions beside quaint California
bungalows. Summertime concerts in Spreckels Park, a spectacular Fourth
of July Parade, a festive hometown Christmas Parade and Merchant Open
House with Santa riding the fire truck add to the small town atmosphere.
With its share of award-winning resorts and comfortable smaller hotels,
visitors can relax and enjoy all Coronado has to offer. The sensational
combination of sand, sea and sun is refreshing to the soul. Coronado’s
beaches have attracted visitors for more than a century, since the worldrenowned Hotel del Coronado opened on the beachfront in 1888. The
main beach, with its dunes spelling “Coronado” from the sky, is ideal
for swimming, riding boogie boards, bodysurfing, sculpting sandcastles,
gazing into tide pools and even whale-watching in the winter months.
Coronado Beach is voted one of America’s top beaches year after year.

LIVING Here
Calling Coronado Home
C
oronado is a unique community:
a small town with a charm of its
own, just across the bay from
bustling San Diego. We enjoy a slower
pace here with all that a big city has
to offer just minutes away. Here is a
look into what it means to be a part of
Coronado.
1. Appreciate what Coronado
has to offer. Dine here, shop here,
experience the sights and sounds of
our community: sport a Crown City
Coronado license plate holder on your
car, attend the hometown 4th of July
and Christmas parades, cheer on the
high school teams, watch the evening
sailboat races, picnic with friends at
a Concert-in-the-Park, read the editorials in our local newspaper, delight in
the sparkle of the Hotel del’s fabulous
Christmas tree. There’s so much to see
and do!
2. Shop locally. Coronado has its
share of quaint shops and local businesses that offer services to locals and
visitors. The owners are your neighbors
and fellow community leaders. Our
businesses give generously to local
charitable organizations. Return the
favor and patronize their establishments.
Many businesses offer local discounts;
just ask.
3. Take an active role. Coronado
is an active community with respected,
accessible government leaders. Listen
to opposing views with respect, ask
questions, form your own positions and
advocate on local issues that concern
you. You can make a difference!
4. Grow with our community.
Share your ideas with local business
leaders. As business owners, tailor your
business to fit the needs of your community. Together, our community will grow
and prosper.
5. Volunteer here. Find something
that you are passionate about and support that cause by giving some time and
financial support. You will be richer for
it and so will the community.
6. Be a good host. Our community
is a tourist destination. In fact, sometimes visitors fall in love with our island
and decide to become residents! Offer
friendly assistance to visitors and tell
them what Coronado has to offer.
7. Slow down. Ease over the bridge
onto the island. Traffic moves at a
different pace here. Be patient with the
increased traffic during the busy season.
Expect more pedestrians, bicyclists and
electric cars. Take a deep breath, look
up at our clear blue skies and count
your blessings for living in paradise.
8. Play tourist for a day or a
weekend. Put on your shades and
sunscreen, walk the Paseo del Mar
along the beach at the Del, sit at a sidewalk table and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
Ride the ferry to downtown San Diego
to a Padres baseball game. Stroll along
the bay through the Ferry Landing to the
bridge and back. Enjoy being able to
live in such a desirable location!

The History of Coronado
C
oronado was named for the
Coronado Islands off the coast
of San Diego. They were first
sighted November 8, 1602, by Spanish
navigator Vizcaino. He named them “Los
Coronados” or “the crowned ones,” for
four martyred saints of ancient Rome.
Coronado remained a barren peninsula, mostly populated by jack rabbits,
until purchased in 1885 by Elisha S.

Babcock, Jr., and Hampton L. Storey.
They rowed over to the island from San
Diego to hunt rabbits and decided it
would be an ideal setting for a luxurious
resort hotel. With the railroad scheduled to reach San Diego, they believed
Easterners looking for a more moderate
climate would flock to the new hotel.
The Hotel del Coronado opened in
1888 and shortly afterwards was sold
off on the first leg of his famous journey
to St. Louis, New York and Paris from
North Island. Today, North Island homeports two aircraft carriers (a third carrier
will arrive in approximately 2009),
making the military the top employer
in the community.
History is still a part of everyday
life in Coronado with more than 111
historical sites designated in the City. For
more information on Coronado’s history,

to John D. Spreckels, the “Sugar King”.
In 1891, Benjamin Harrison was the
first of 13 United States Presidents to
visit Coronado, joining the long list of
celebrity guests at the Hotel. Today, the
hotel is a designated National Historical
Landmark.
Aviation and the military is another
important part of Coronado’s history. In
1911, Glenn Curtis opened an aviation
camp in what is today the Naval Air
Station, North Island. During World
War I, the Spreckels family sold North
Island to the U.S. Navy for $5 million.
In 1927, Col. Charles Lindbergh took

oronado’s economy is supported by its residential population, tourism, and by
the adjacent navy bases. The City is a renowned tourist destination not only by
out-of-town travelers but also from neighboring communities in the San Diego region.
While tourism is a significant contributor to the local tax base, residential property
taxes are still the largest single source of revenue to the City of Coronado, making
up more than a third of its general revenues.

Neighborhoods
Village
The main residential area of Coronado
is known as the Village, featuring picturesque tree-lined streets that run about
12 blocks east to west and about 18
blocks north to south. The homes, many
built before World War II, are architecturally unique and range from charming
cottages to stately mansions.
Shores
Just south of the famous Hotel del
Coronado sits the Coronado Shores,
a Coronado neighborhood often described as the “ultimate beach house.”
These high-rise style condominiums offer
luxurious oceanfront living at its finest.
Residents in these ten towers enjoy
spectacular sunset views, complete

with underground parking and concierge service.
Silver Strand
Located on the Silver Strand 2.5 miles
south of the Naval Amphibious Base,
this neighborhood is comprised of duplexes and apartments for military families. Silver Strand Elementary School is
also located within this neighborhood.
Cays
Another neighborhood of Coronado
is the Coronado Cays, a marina community located four miles south on the
Silver Strand. It features condominiums,
town homes, patio homes and beautiful
waterfront estates, many including
private boat slips.
Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is
a consolidated Navy command that
encompasses airfields, training ranges,
and facilities that provide critical
operational training and services for
the entire Navy. As one of the largest
military complexes in the Navy, NBC
is made up of seven facilities that
cover more than 57,000 acres. Two of
seven facilities are located in the City
of Coronado: Naval Air Station North
Island and Naval Amphibious Base
Coronado. For information specific to
military relocations, please contact the
Naval Base Coronado Fleet & Family
Service Center at (619) 545-6071 or
go to www.cnic.navy.mil/coronado.
Naval Air Station, North Island
(NASNI) is known as “The Birthplace
of Naval Aviation,” and was officially
designated as the Navy’s first Naval Air
Station in 1917. On a daily basis 500
flights, on average, are conducted here
and 36% of all the Navy’s aircrews
are trained here each year. NASNI is
home to two nuclear-powered aircraft
carriers and more than 100 commands,
including: Commander Naval Air
Forces and two Carrier Strike Groups.
The air station resembles a small city
in its operations. It has its own police
and fire departments and its own parks,
beaches, housing and recreation areas.
The Naval Amphibious Base
(NAB) has been in operation since
1943. The base is situated on the Silver
Strand, just south of the famous Hotel
del Coronado between the San Diego
Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It is host to
more than thirty commands to include
Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific and Commander, Naval Special
Warfare Command, a second echelon
command which is headquarters for
America’s elite maritime special operations forces — the U.S. Navy SEALs
and Special Warfare Combatant Craft
Crewmen.

The Coronado Schools Foundation, a nonprofit education organization was formed in 1982 by
Coronado residents and parents to
provide an alternate source of funding for the many special programs
and materials which would not otherwise be affordable in a small district
as a result of state wide limitations on
funding. CSF is entirely dependent
upon donations from the community

CSF funds equally benefit all five
Coronado public schools. Over the
past 20 years CSF has given over
$2,800,000 in additional funding
