Rishi Valley School
Day 1
Declaration of the Dazzling Day
A
fter a heavy sumptous tea the crowd
moved toward the games field for the
most awaited event : SPORTS DAY 2015.
In Rishi Valley the 9th standards and above take
part in the march past. This year the march past
was led by Captain Shravan followed by Prakruthi
and Manjeet beating the drums. Bhavya led class
12 with Rakshit holding the placard. Class 11
marched to the commands of Aila holding the flag
and Abizer holding the placard. 10A was followed
by Prithvi and Spruha holding the placard. In 10B
it was Smitha who took the lead with Subam
holding the placard. 9A and 9B who were new to
this event were lead by C.S.R.Sharada, Pradnayan,
Nivash and Riti respectively.
The Oath
We, the athletes gathered here
today,
Do solemnly swear to take part
In the annual sports meet
To the best of our abilities and
In the true spirit of sportsmanship;
For the honour of our school
Sunil Sir hoisted the flag. It was a solemn
movement when Shravan of class 12 was joined
by all class captains as they took the oath. After
the oath taking all eyes turned towards cave rock
hill and all the juniors ran down the stone steps
eagerly to catch a glimpse of Sruti and Sanjana,
the twins of class 12 who were to bring down the
torch. This was first time in the history of R.V.
sports day that 2 girls are bringing down the torch
since it is always a boy and a girl from the 12th.
As they lit the torch with Reddy Sir's help, a round
of applause came up and Sports Day 2015 was
declared open by Jyothi akka!
-Sheetala and Tanmay
And for the glory of sport.
For when the great scorer comes
To score against our name
He seeks not whether
We’ve won or lost
But how we’ve played the game.
Breaking or Making?
This year the torch bearers are Sruti and Sanjana,
the identical twins. So far in Rishi Valley the
torch bearers were always a boy and a girl, but
now all of a sudden, two girls! Now here the
question lies : are we breaking an old tradition or
making up a new one?
We asked Rajan Sir on what he thought about
this and this was his response: ''We are more of
making a new tradition than breaking the unsaid
one.'' When asked why Sruti and Sanjana were
chosen, he said that the twins were highly
atheletic and have had outstanding records.
The twins said they had no clue about this till
Rajan Sir had come into the class and announced
that the teachers had already decided that Sruti
and Sanjana would be the torch bearers this year.
They say that they are extremely excited and had
been eagerly waiting for the torch bearing
because Sruti has always wanted to be the torch
bearer since 9th grade. To Sanjana this is special
because 30 years ago, her father too was the
torch bearer in Rishi Valley and would be there
to watch them this Sports Day.
Apart from torch bearing, Sanjana says she is
looking forward to the class relays and 100 metre
run. This year though Sruti will not be able to
participate in many events because of an injury.
She says that she will be participating in cricket
ball throw and perhaps sack race too.

Logon Ke Logos
W
e interviewed the students who have designed the logo for their class
T-shirt in senior school this year for Sports Day. When asked how
they came up with the idea of their logo the responses were typically vague.
Their common starting point was 'Um... basically',... and they generally did
not proceed any further with the sentence. However, it was evident that for
their design to be chosen as the class logo, there had to be some special
significance to it. We decided to probe further.
The 9th standard logo, designed by Aura Guha and Gouri A. Nandana, is an
eagle with wings spread out and merging into a flaming background. The
talons of the bird are taut, ready to face challenges. Their slogan is “Infinite
Possibilities, One Chance!”. The significance of this slogan, Aura told us,
lends itself to multiple interpretations. Some believe that the slogan implies
that we should be able to make the right choice with the many available
possibilities. Others choose to focus on the fact that opportunity does not
come knocking that often hence the necessity to make the most of it when
available. Either way the logo focuses on opportunity.
The 10th standard logo consists of rings of the elements. Water is
represented by Fish. Earth by Plants, Air by Birds and Fire by Flames. One
single gear takes pride of place. Their slogan is “Elements of Excellence”.
When asked, the designers, Diya and Subam, along with their classmates,
gave rather diverse answers. There were enlightening theories about how it
represented some of Ptolemy's ideas and how many elements when
combined make the world. As you can infer, this logo is subjective and open
to interpretations.
The 11th standard logo is a pole vaulter jumping and a high jumper in mid
air. Dixsha the designer told us that she wanted a logo related to sports and
thus drawing a jumper made sense. The slogan “Leaping Beyond Limits”
came into their minds because in the logo the high jumper and the pole
vaulter are shown literally leaping for their lives. This logo is simple and self
explanatory.
The 12th standard logo is the only logo which uses white on a dark
background. Rahi, Sanjana and Prakruthi decided to stick to the tradition of
writing names of all classmates. This time their unique touch was to draw
something that represented each person in a humorous manner. They wanted
the logo to be a poster on the wall. When they started to think about walls,
the Pink Floyd song “Another Brick in The Wall”, came ito their mind. That
was how their slogan “Not Just Another Brick, We Are the Wall” came to be.

Drills and Drum Beats
REC displayed an ecxellent drill
on rainfall. It was choreographed
by E.Ramu Sir supported by
Srivalli Akka, Chalapati sir and
Sushila Akka . In their traditional
attire it was a spectacular event.
E.Ramu Sir has composed the
song too with help from Sudha
Akka
and
instrument
accompaniment.
Characters of their Drill
8 Bulls
8 Farmers(Boys)
8 Farmers(Girls)
1 Goddess
10 Old People
6 Youngsters
7 Singers
And a few others
Story of the drill:
There are a few farmers who are
done with ploughing the seeds
and are waiting for the rains.
When the rain does not come, the
old people come and tell them to
pray to God for rain. They even
offer a sacrifice for the gods.
When the rain does not come this
time the youngsters explain that
cutting trees and burning plants
will stop the rain from coming
and that we should stop doing
that. The old people understand
this fact and stop cutting trees and
then there is rain.

The most awaited display of sports day is of course the
drills. While the seniors do the march past the juniors
perform drills and this tradition has been there for years.
The students of class 6 have used lazemes in their drill.
They showed perfect coordination and rhythm. Sumita
akka and Paritha akka had made this drill.
The seniors of junior school, students of class 8 displayed
a wonderful drill. Their hands and feet moved to the beat
of a spanish song called 'Bailando'. Students of class 8
had choreographed the drill by themselves.
The junior most of the school the 4ths and 5ths wowed
the audience with their bamboo dance by clapping,
hopping and stamping. They showed much expertise as
they moved to the drum beat. This was choreographed by
Venugopal Sir. The preppies too joined the dance.
Sheetala and Saranya
The students of class 7 swayed beautifully to a Brazilian
song in Portugese. Sonali akka has choreographed the
drill. It was a visual delight.
Power Yoga
This year after a hiatus of 3 years, the yoga tradition in
RV starts again. This also coincides with the Indian
Government making yoga a sport. It all began with the
fifthies badgering Ramola Sir to display their yoga on
sports day. When he agreed they started practising
earnestly and aimed for perfection. They were quite
excited.
Their yoga was divided into 3 parts : standing ; surya
namaskar i.e. the sun salutation ; sitting and lying down.
In standing they did hanuman-asan, bamboo pose, tree
pose and triangle pose. It was all well synchronized.
They did four rounds of surya namaskar.
In sittng , they did gaumukh-asan and a variety of others.
In lying down, they first did lying straight way up and
then upside down. Lying straight way up, they did fish
pose. When they turned upside down they did a few
poses.
After this they did child pose while Jigmet did head
stand. It was spectacular.
They ended with the 'om' chant and prayed for peace and
sat completely still and quite. Everybody marvelled at the
great control they had over their bodies.

Olympic Chariot
M
eena Akka and Sita Akka decided to
conduct an assembly with the fourth grade
students as an introduction to the Sports Day. They
gave a variety of facts on ancient and modern
olympics and presented this by showing the
audience a series of tableaus.
The assembly started off with the olympic anthem
which was followed by an English translation of its
motto.
After this the first tableau commenced. The
fourthies, in their class T-Shirts and with paper
wreaths on their heads, showed a scene from the
opening ceremony of sports day. The Rishi Valley
oath was partaken.
The assembly moved on to other aspects of the
olympics and the origins of various events. There
were facts about the lighting of the torch and how
the ritual is performed. The origins of the
marathon, the legend behind the name, and the tug
of war which originally meant 'the real struggle' - a
contest for supremacy were all conveyed in this
part of the assembly. They also talked about the
origin of the relay race (a much awaited event)
which, surprisingly, started with the aborigines
relaying messages across great distances.
The assembly ended with a classic rendition of
“Chariots of Fire”.

Eagerly Expected Exciting Events...
R
V is buzzing with excitment for Sports Day.
This year the excitement seems to have gone
higher than usual. There is a great hustle and bustle
in the atmosphere. For the past few days people
have been practising with great enthusiasm for
their events.
The prep section is looking forward to watching
the running events where as the sixth graders are
eagerly waiting for the jumps. The seventh graders
have diverse interests which include javelin throw,
relays and runs. Eighth graders are waiting for the
relays and discuss throw.
D girls and D boys are holding their breath for
participating in the tunnel ball relay. The teachers
mostly await the 4x100 relay race and the first day
events. Many look forward to the open events as
they have not made it in the heats.
These are the events eagerly waited for. Most of
junior school also look forward to the refreshing
walyte that is provided during sports day. Here's
wishing everyone a succesful and safe sports
meet.

Day 2
A Dozen Records on Day One
O
ne of the main things that people look
forward to on Sports Day are the broken
records. 12 records have been broken on the very
first day of the Annual Sports Meet 2015. The first
record of the day was set by Maya.
The new B-Girls 400m record is 1 min 12.41sec.
Less than six hours later she also smashed the
5000m open event for the A and B-Girls. The new
record is 22 min 53.80sec. Sanjana of A girls
broke her own Triple Jump record set last year.
third time in a row by Darius setting a record of
11 seconds. Mehul set a monstrous record of
12.10 meters in 'B' boys shot put . CSR Sharada
broke the B-Girls Triple Jump Record in spite of
an injured ankle. The new record is 9.05m.
Chinmayee set a record in the D-Girls Open Event
500m. The new record is 1 min 57.87 sec.
There was a jubilant atmosphere all around.
- Uditi and Maqbool
Uditi set the record for the C-Girls Triple Jump
beating the previous one by 5 centimeters. The
new record is 8.48m. Later in the day she also
broke the C-Girls Long Jump record by 14
centimeters, making the record 4.18m.
The longest standing record of today, D-Girls
Cricket Ball Throw, was broken by Mishka of
class five by a staggering 6.35 meters. The new
record is 35.65 meters. The D-Girls Obstacle
Race record was broken by Sreeja. She set a
record of 12.06 seconds breaking the previous one
by just 1 second.
The C-girls record for Obstacle Race was also
broken by Durga. It was set at 11.65 seconds. The
D-boys record in obstacle race was broken for the
CLASS RELAY
HATRICK BY
CLASS 12. They
have won in for a
third time in a
row.
Lightning Thieves
T
he A- boys 100m run is one of the most
awaited event. This year too, they were
true to their form as they stole a march on the
viewers. Varkey finished in 11.94sec and had a
staggering lead. He was followed by George
and Rakshit.
Another really exiciting event was the A-girls
100m. Sanjana had a huge lead and she
finished within 14.41sec. She was followed by
Koyna and Arti who finished really close with
a timing of 16.40sec and 16.44sec
respectively.
Neck to neck, Yash Suhas and Aditya Pandav
bolted for the first place and though it was a
close finish Yash won. Aditya Pandav finished
second with a timing of 13.66sec and Yash
finished with a timing of 13.41 seconds, just
0.25 seconds ahead of Aditya.

B-Boys Javelin record was almost
broken today. Mehul from class 10
gave some spectacular perfomance.
Despite the javelin hurting his back
in the first throw he did very well in
his third attempt by throwing a
distance of 33.56m and the record
being 37.86m. Rajeev Sir, Anoop Sir
and Sumitha Akka decided to give
him one more throw but Mehul
couldn't close the distance. Nivash
came second with a throw of 29.48m
followed by Aakash with 23.23m.

Do or Die: Class Relays
T
he class relays have been a tradition of the annual
sports day for a very long time. This event is one of
those special ones which almost all of us look foward to.
Even though it might seem to us like any other ordinary
'fun' event, it matters a lot to the graders of senior school
since it holds up their reputation. Everyone wants to
achieve victory. During our talks and interviews with the
relay runners of ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth we
found what was playing on their minds.
From ninth grade there were nine people short-listed for
the relay out of which four were chosen. “Everything is
fine, but there is scope for mistake” they say. The ninth
graders had also thought they'd beat the tenth graders but
nowthey are not so sure. After all, its their first time and
they are looking foward to it.
In the eleventh, who have their fresher stars Vishnu,
Aarthi, Ria along with Daanish who has been running the
relay since his ninth. The elevenths seem to be doing
pretty well but since they were involved with drama they
have been pressed for time to put in regular practice.
They expect third place and aren't scared of anyone!
Lastly, there is the senior most class in school, the twelfth
with their key runners Sanjana, George, Varkey and
Sahitee. They seem to be doing great but are working on
their baton pass. They aspire to win the 100m relay since
they've been winning for the past two years and want to
get a hat trick. The twelfth are a bit scared for their 200m
but they want to win it, for its their last year in school.
Hope all of you do well! BEST 'O'!
Coming to the tenth graders, we have Mahitha, Spruha,
Subam and Prithvi. They are doing well and are trying
their best although are scared of the twelfth.
Something similar happened with
the A-Girls shot putt. Vennela of
class 12 just missed the record by
0.32m. She threw the 10lb shot putt
to a distance of 8.4m. Even Vennela
got an extra chance but even she
could not cross the mark. Sanjana
and Laya won the second and third
places throwing 7.9m and 54.9m
respectively.

Sports Day and the Seven Champs
A
s always the second day of our annual sports
meet kicked off with the preppies events.
Their first event was 75m run for the senior
prep kids. The victors of this race were Nachiket,
Bilva and Sanjeev for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places
respectively. The second event was the obstacle race
with Nachiket coming first,Yasaswini coming 2nd
and Shresta coming 3rd. The 3rd event for them was
potato gathering in which Raghuveer came
1st,Yasaswini 2nd and Shresta 3rd . Their 2 X 25m
race was won by the duo Bilva and Yasaswini. Ruchi
Akka was their along with the parents to cheer them
all the way through. The track judges warmed up to
the events as they prepared for the long day ahead.

Great Expectations but Hard Times
T
he disappointment today was very high. Sruti
of grade 12 who was one of the favourites in
the A girls 100m was suffering from an injury, else
one could have expected a photo finish between
the twins. C.S.R.Sharada who ran the B girls 100m
was out of form due to an ankle injury and could
not replicate her earlier feats.
It was particularly heartbreaking for Nanditha in C
girls 400m race. She ran a spectacular race with a
huge lead over others but was disqualified because
of changing tracks earlier than permitted.

The Challenge Within
ow many of us have heard of the saying 'when
you fall off a horse, climb back on '?
Today amongst us is one such example who refuses
failure. Last year CSR.Sharada had an injury but
despite that she ran. Even though she came last she
kept up the spirit of a good sportsmanship. However,
this event has left her daunted.
This year too she experienced a similar injury. This

brought about this change of mind?
solo. However this year I am on my class relay team
and am getting a lot of support from my classmates. I
am hoping that the team performence will encourage
me to perform well too.
Me: How do you feel about running with an injury
again?
CSR: I am feeling very nervous but I'm sure I'll get
over it.
Me: Who are your inspirations?
Me: Last year you had a hurt leg and could not run
properly. So what made you run this time when you
have a similar injury?
CSR: My inspirations are my classmates and teachers.
CSR: Last year I was on my own as I was running

A Tale of Two Girls
T
here are two girls. They both run very well. They are so similar that
they could pass off as twins.
Both C.S.R and Marian started running only after coming to Rishi Valley.
They have really enjoyed sports since 8th and as a result are very good at
it. Marian is quite confident and believes that she can touch the B girls
record, but C.S.R on the other hand has lost most of her hope and believes
that she won't be able to do it.
Both C.S.R and Marian have series of records and have proven their speed
to the entire school.
Expectations this year are quite high, C.S.R and Marian both seem to want
to beat each other and come first. They are good friends despite competing
with each other.

No Obstacle for Records
S
ession 3 of day 2 of the annual sports meet
2015 saw 3 records being broken in the 5
obstacle races. D boys obstacle race record has
been consequently for the past three years . In
2013 Vivek Bagai broke Vairag's record,
followed the next year by Aniketh Majety who
in turn had broken Vivek's record. This year
Darius broke Aniket's record by 72
milliseconds with a timing of 11.00 seconds
flat. D girls was won by Sreeja who got a
record breaking timing of 12.06 seconds. C
girls was won by Durga who broke the C girls
record by timing 11.65 sec. This year there
really has been no obstacle for records in the
obstacle race..

ABC of Cricket Ball Throw
Flying High
A
for Aditya Honnur. B for Bilvasai. C for cricket ball throw. Cricket ball throw for C boys was one
of the much awaited events. Aditya Honnur and Bilvasai were the hot favourites. In the first throw
Bilvasai of class 8 threw a distance 56.44m. T.N. Tharan of class 7 in his second attempt threw a
distasnce of 53.60m. Aditya Honnur in his third attempt came with a winning throw with the distance of
59m missing the record by 2.57m. Anoop Sir, Sharath Anna, and Rajeev Sir decided to give Aditya
Honnur and Bilvasai one more chance. Alas, But they couldn't break the record.

CALM AFTER THE STORM
T
It has been an intense two days of sports with
meaningful participation, and a sense of
achievement too. The achievement does not draw
just from a good haul of records but is also to do
with the earnestness with which each participant
has taken part. The meet has also reaffirmed the
place of many stars in the firmament of Rishi
Valley sports. Maya, Subam, Sanjana, Uditi,
Rohit, Mehul amongst others have given some
spectacular performances.
Siddhartha Sir declared the sports meet closed.
Before that he said that when RV is searched for
in a satellite map, it is the small square games
field which defines it. For these few days of the
year this small field becomes not just the centre of
our world but a vast space in our lives because so
much happens here, the events, the experiences,
coping with emotions whether of victory or
defeat. He emphasized that when everyone takes
part with the kind of joy that we get to see here,
the question of defeat or failure does not arise. He
spoke of the tremendous joy and the spirit of
comaraderie which was evident across classes
during the sports day. He ended with the hope that
we will cherish these precious memories for a
long time to come.
After all the intensity, the audience were excited
by the traditional tug of war between staff and the
students. As the sun went down the horizon, it was
time for the silent march past and torch drill. The
whole valley seemed to be immersed in the
moment as the sports meet came to a close.
The vote of thanks was given by Ruchi Akka to
Reddy Sir, Sharad Anna, Baganna and
Venkatramana, to the art department, especially
Prabhakar Sir, to the carpentry and building
department, the dining hall and staff, parents and
students.
The torches were lit and Shravan for the second
time led forward the senior school as a captain of
the school. The difference between the moments
encapsulate the spirit of the Sports Meet 2015.
After the silent march past the flag and torches
were handed over to the elevenths.
The evening lights threw a curtain on the big
event of this year as the students trooped out of
the big square field which once again went back
to being a small square on the satellite map.
he rain gods have been merciful, raining
enough to wet the ground but not to spoil the
sports. In fact, many youngsters have been
playing in the small puddles that have formed here
and there.

Teachers lose on Teachers' Day
E
very year, the teachers always win in tug of war due to the
fact that they outnumber the twelfthies 2 to 1. This year the
twelfthies finally beat the teachers[and parents]! They were helped
by a fair amount of seniors who gave enough firepower for the
victory of students. We hope that we the twelfthies win every
year!

What should
we run in?
T
his is a question which has
puzzled many of us. Some
people prefer to run barefoot; some
prefer shoes. The good athletes use
spikes but we have also found out
that some people love to run in
socks!
Page 3
UNDISPUTED LORD
OF THE GAME OF THROWS
E
veryone was banking on Mehul to win the 1.5 kg
discus throw for B-boys as he had already come first
in shot put. His opponents could hardly reach the cricket
nets. So when Mehul had already got his two tries past
the nets everyone expected him to break the record. As
Mehul stepped up silent whispers of ''GO MEHUL'' were
audible. However Mehul's third throw missed the
pennant marking the record by centimetres. Though Sunil
Sir gave him another try he could not equal his earlier
throw and the discus throw ended with:
1. Mehul:27.00mts;
2. Vineeth:20.58mts;
3. Sujan:18.93mts.
- Siddharth.N
Praneeth of class 9 likes running in
shoes as well as spikes. When
questioned he said that he preferred
spikes for 100m, 200m and 400m.
According to him spikes are good
for short distances because they give
a push at the start of a race.
However,
shoes
are
more
comfortable for 800m and more. He
has never tried bare foot running.
Prithvi of class 10 also prefers
spikes for short distance runs
because they give a good grip and
are light weight. Like Praneeth, he
prefers shoes for 800m or more.
Rohit of class 8
likes to run
barefoot. He said “I always run
barefoot because that has been my
practice since childhood”. We asked
him if he had tried running in spikes
or shoes and he replied “ I have tried
them but they slow me down”. We
asked him if the stones on the tracks
hurt him. He said that he was used to
them.
Then, we met Mr. Anonymous of
class 8 who is one of the few people
who runs in socks, two pairs at a
time! He said “I run in socks
because I don't think spikes are
useful for me and I don't like
running in shoes. The only
remaining option is to run barefoot
but stones hurt me, which is why I
have started running in socks.” We
can safely assume that his
consumption of socks must be on the
higher side. He also has a suggestion
for everybody who wants to try
running in socks. He says, “Never
run in white socks!”
- Indraneel, Rehan and Aditya H.
Challenges of a Different Sort
S
porting events all over the globe and throughout
history have celebrated outstanding sporting icons
who have broken through the barriers and explored new
horizons. But what about those everyday ordinary
humans striving hard to gain respect without talent? Hard
work does not always beat talent, contradictory to what
people think. This is why we interviewed a student who
wishes to be unnamed.
Q1: How many years have you competed in Sports Day?
Ans:- Three years but once I had broken my hand, so
unfortunately I couldn't participate.
Q2: How many times have you been chosen in an event?
Ans:- Zero times.
That's very sad as I have seen you work very hard in
practice time.
Q3: What are the events you are weak in?
Ans:- Runs and Jumps
But I have seen you participate in every running event.
Q4: Why do you strive hard in events that you are weak
in?
Ans:- I believe that hard work always helps you succeed
in fulfilling your goals.
We wish you luck for the future!

Fast Track 800
T
oday's 800m run was very exciting since there were two
people from class 10 who were extremely close to
breaking the record. Prithvi ran an outstanding
2mins22.18secs which is just 4.25 seconds away from the
record set by Dinakar TN in 1985. He maintained a steady
pace throughout the first three rounds and unexpectedly built
up speed in the last one. Maya, who has been breaking
several records this sports day, was a miniscule 1.80 seconds
away from the record set by Mallika Talwar in the year
2011.The record is 2mins59.26secs and Maya ran a
mindblowing 3mins1.06 secs.
- Shruti and Gamya
Built For The Best
E
ven though events like 100m and
long jump are serious events,
they are some of the most popular
events which sees 30 to 40 athletes
vying for 8 spots. This is not the case
for Triple jump. An exclusive sport,
only the very best participate in
heats. It is not an easy sport and
lesser athletes shy away from it like
no other sport. This year brought
three new records for triple jump.
2015 has seen many more athletes
participate in this aristocratic sport.
In C Boys, Rohit T. Came first with
10.12m, Aditya P. Came second with
9.82m and Arnav came third with
9.1m. In D girls, Sreeja came first
with 6.68m, Varshini came second
with 6.34m and Rachna came third
with 6.15m. In D boys, Darius came
first with 7.9m, Shrivar came second
with 7.04m and Sanan came third
with 7.02m.We hope that next year
we see many more!
THROWING IS GOING
(Seniors are favoured ) Why?
- Vivek
I
n 2011, Riggyal of class 10 equalled the shot putt
record of 11.61m and on the same day came first in
all the jumping events and 100m. However the latter
events were given more coverage than the former.
Why was coming first favoured more than almost
breaking a record ?
It has been observed that during the heats of C.B.T and
Shott Putt, the field is swarmed by spectators.
However, on sports day hardly a fraction of them visit
the events and prefer flocking at the running track or
jumping pits in the sweltering sun. Why is it that
running and jumping are given more preference than
throwing events among juniors? Some reasons given
are that it is their favorite 'sports haunt' and close to the
juice tent. There are more friends and peers taking
part in races and jumping events. Reddy Sir has
forbade sitting near the throwing fields for safety
reasons.
Often the only people frequenting the throwing fields
are the teachers who are conducting the events and the
participants. It is also true that Javelin has also been
given more attention than C.B.T or Shot Putt. Why do
the seniors' sports fascinate us so much when our own
peers are performing equally well in their own ways?

SPEED THRILLS BUT DOES NOT KILL
R
elays hold a great amount of thrill for
everyone on Sports Day. The 4 x 200 metre
relay simply doubles up the excitment. This years
relay was no exception.
In the relay this time the athletes were ; in twelfth:
Varkey and George, Sanjana and Sahitee; from
eleventh: Daanish and Vishnu, Aarti and Ria; from
tenth: Subam and Prithvi, Spruha and Mahitha.
From ninth the athletes were Nivash and Praneeth,
Anjana and CSR Sharada. They were chosen for
their speed and ran their very best to provide a
scintillating display of agility, stamina and coordination.
The first leg was run by Varkey, Danish, Mahitha
and Nivash. As expected Varkey got a sizeable
lead before passing the baton to Sanjana, paving
the way for a victorious run for the twelfth. After
the first leg, The tenth were lagging behind but
Prithvi ran an extraordinary leg to overtake the
eleventh and ninth and almost the twelfth to give
the tenth the second place.
The most tense moment was when George and
Subam battled for first place before George
steamed past the finish line a mere 1.30 seconds
ahead of Subam. Praneeth also overtook Vishnu at
the 100m mark to give ninth the third place. The
relay proved to be more exciting than the shorter
version.

Back tracking through the years...
S
ports Day is an integral part of Rishi Valley
School. Students have come and gone; records
set and broken. Everyone is eager for the big day
to come. Every year students go on stretching the
boundaries and breaking through barriers .
Even though the records are everchanging, the
main structure and events of the sports day have
remained the same. Around the year 2010,
Cockfight, a major event in the sports day had
been banned. This event was for students above
ninth grade. Other than this no other major events
have been stopped or banned.
There is however, a change in the attitude of the
students participating in the sports day. Some of
our seniors tell us that there were many more
participants in the events earlier than there are
now. “People participate only if they can win”,
says school captain Shravan. “This is slowly
spreading to the juniors also,” he says.
Reddy sir has also noticed this change and says
that he sees most participation among the fourth
to eighth graders. Reddy Sir has tried to increase
the participation in the races by adding two extra
tracks to the six tracks that were there earlier .
The sports day has also become more elaborate.
Earlier, it used to be a 2-day event; however, now
it has extened to 3 days. Some other things in the
sports day like the photo display and the musical
chairs have stopped. The tabloid has been active
for the last seven years or so.
Small things keep changing in the sports day –
some for worse and some for better.

Lilt Before The Storm
T
he senior shool students performed a
'join-in' dance for the joy and
celebration of the annual sports meet. They
danced to a Tamil song called 'pista' and
later to an English song called 'watch me
whip, nye nye'. At first they all stood in a
circle and Revanth and Shravan went in
and danced in a typical Indian celebration
dance style.
In the middle of the song, the beat changed
as Rakshit and Shravan gave a spectacular
and very unexpected dance performance to
a Telugu song right before the relay. The
whole of senior school was assembled in
front of the podium to watch this dance
performance.They displayed a series of
very diverse moves, from a robotic style to
flexible manoeuvres. They perfected the
moves as they danced along with the
song.Their movements were pretty
synchronised in spite of lack of
practice.Their
partnership
and
coordination was quite flawless.They
created an atmosphere of exhiliration
which calmed down the relay runners' taut
nerves.
