Pocono Medical Center to Build New Hospital Campus
In October, Pocono Medical
Center (PMC) announced it had
signed a letter of understanding with
the Farda Family and DF Pocono
Associates L.P. to increase and
improve access to healthcare by
constructing a state-of-the-art second campus hospital facility, called
Pocono Medical Center West, on a
40-acre site in Tannersville, Pocono
Township.
“Pocono Medical Center West
will allow us to bring the most
sophisticated healthcare technology
and the highest quality care to an
expanding number of patients here
in Monroe County,” said Jeff Snyder,
President and CEO of Pocono
Medical Center.
Over the past seven years, PMC
has focused on enhancing and adding
to the inpatient and outpatient
clinical services at its headquarters
campus in East Stroudsburg, and at
its more than 20 locations throughout
the region. Significant investments
have been made in the ESSA Heart
& Vascular Institute, the Mattioli
Emergency Center, Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, Trauma Center, the Dale
& Frances Hughes Cancer Center,
Bartonsville Healthcare Center, Pocono
Ambulatory Surgery Center, and the
West End Healthcare Center,
which opened in February 2015.
From
Medical Center West in Tannersville
was announced this past October.
And, the Auxiliary of the PMC held
its 48th Annual Charity Gala in
November and is busy planning the
2015 Spring Auction.
With the celebration of our
100th anniversary, this momentous
occasion provides a wonderful
opportunity to thank our generous
benefactors, whose philanthropic
commitment has enhanced and
impacted the care and services
delivered to our patients. Just as the
fundraising efforts and legacy of our
Ladies Auxiliary in 1915 formed the
foundation and genesis on which
PMC began, so does the legacy of
our current and future benefactors,
whose continued generosity and
“giving results” will support
and benefit the patient services
delivered in the next 100 years.
I look forward to seeing many of
you in the months ahead as we celebrate your generosity and provide
opportunities to witness how we
have stewarded your gifts. Thank

“foundation NEWS & VIEWS,” the
Pocono Health Foundation (PHF)
team extends our wishes for a
happy and healthy new year.
This edition provides you with an
overview of recent Foundation
events including our first “Fashion
for a Cause” fundraiser, the
annual Holiday Tree Lighting, and
PHF Information Receptions. In
addition, exciting news by our
President and CEO, Jeff Snyder,
regarding plans to build Pocono

The 1915 Fund
To mark the occasion of PMC’s
100th anniversary, The 1915 Fund has
been created. Tying back to PMC’s
history of addressing the growing and
changing needs of our community, The
1915 Fund will provide unrestricted
gift support to the areas of PMC’s
patient care with the greatest need.
Every gift makes a difference and
supports our dedicated team of care
Fashion for a Cause
providers in delivering compassionate
care and patient programs at PMC
and its various healthcare centers.
PMC began in 1915 when it was
called “The General Hospital” and
was established on East Stroudsburg’s
Courtland Street through fundraising
by the Ladies Auxiliary, now called
the Auxiliary of the Pocono Medical
Center.

Early members of the Ladies Auxiliary
Twelve years later, the General
Hospital moved to the Roop property,
where PMC now resides on East
Brown Street. There, it continued
to grow along with its community,
tripling its bed capacity between 1930
and 1965. In 1976 the name of the
hospital changed to Pocono Hospital
to reflect an expanded service area
that now reached outside Monroe
County into portions of Pike and
Northampton counties, as well as
Northwestern New Jersey. The name
was then adjusted to Pocono Medical
Center in 1988.
Since then, PMC has added
to the breadth and depth of its
patient services through the addition
of the Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer
Center, the ESSA Heart & Vascular
Institute, and the Mattioli Emergency
Center. The new Bartonsville
Healthcare Center opened in 2013
followed by the West End Healthcare
Center, which recently opened this past
February. As we further enhance our
ability to provide care for those we
serve, your gift to The 1915 Fund will
create a legacy to those patients served
in this next century of care.
Building a Healthier Community with Grants and Scholarships
Every year PHF encourages healthcare students and
community nonprofits to submit an application to one
of its many grants or scholarships. Applications will be
accepted starting March 1, 2015 with a deadline of
March 31. Awards will be presented at the Annual PHF
Grant & Scholarship Ceremony in June 2015.

PHF sponsored the first annual
“Fashion for a Cause” event to benefit
PMC’s S.A.F.E. (Sexual Assault
Forensic Examiner) program, which is
dedicated to serving individuals in our
community who have fallen victim
to sexual harassment. While sexual
harassment continues to be a very
prevalent matter, especially amongst
youth, PMC pursues steadfast care to
improve the quality of our patients’
experiences to ensure quick and
effective examination of your loved
ones. Women’s Resources of Monroe
County serves alongside PMC staff in
our facility as trained counselors and
support systems for victims of sexual
assault.
The October 30 event was held at
The Lodge at Mountain Springs Lake
with an evening of refreshments and
hors d’oeuvres, Halloween goodie
bags and treats, and fabulous fall and
holiday fashions provided by The
Apple Tree, Main Street, Stroudsburg.
This year’s models included PMC’s
team of S.A.F.E. nurses. Thanks to
the dedication and commitment of
The Apple Tree, Women’s Resources
of Monroe County, and our sponsors
(Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, Jane
Kanyock, Longfellow Investment
Management Co., Neiman Marcus,
The Apple Tree, The Lodge at
Mountain Springs Lake), the event
realized $3,000 net to be applied
toward the purchase of an S.D.F.I.
(Secure Digital Forensic Imaging)
camera.
This camera improves patient
examination time by 50%, takes
photos with a resolution that is
4,900% better than our current
equipment, and provides detailed and
accurate results. These improvements
can make certain that the examination
process for victims stands accurate and
immediate for maximized comfort.
Although the camera will substantially
advance our care, the camera and its
supporting software program are very
expensive.
PHF is committed to securing the
needed funds to acquire the digital
camera and software program.
The second annual “Fashion for a
Cause” event will be held on October
1, 2015 at The Lodge at Mountain
Springs Lake with fall fashions to
be provided by The Apple Tree.

New Giving Opportunity
PHF and The Rotary Club of the Smithfields Award
$6,500 for Important Community Causes
At the Dale & Frances Hughes
Cancer Center there is a new bell
adorning our walls. This bell is a
symbol of light and survivorship. It
enables our patients to celebrate a
special milestone toward hope and
inspiration for life!
For a gift or pledge of $1500, our
community has an opportunity to
purchase and engrave a space on the
“Ringing of the Bell” plaque. There
is a bell on the first floor for our
radiation oncology patients and one on
PHF and the Rotary Club of the Smithfields held their
annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 3,
2014, which awarded non-profit agencies grants that will
improve the lives of children in the community. This
year, the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony funded six
organizations in the total amount of over $6,000 dollars.
Those recipients are:

• Melon’s Gift, Inc.
• Pocono Area Transitional Housing (PATH)
• Pocono Services for Families and Children
• Pregnancy Resource Center of the Poconos
• Youth Infusion, Inc.
“We always look forward to the holiday season here
at Pocono Medical Center, as it gives us an opportunity
to work alongside the Rotary Club of the Smithfields in
giving back to our wonderful community for which I am
so proud to serve,” said Jeff Snyder, President & CEO of
AFP Recognizes Outstanding PHF Donors
This past November two long-time PHF donors were
honored at the 9th Annual National Philanthropy Day®
for their commitment and generosity to PMC. This
annual event, organized by the Association of Fundraising
Professionals — Pocono Chapter, provides the opportunity
for all nonprofits to nominate a person or group to receive
awards based on their philanthropic efforts. PHF nominated
several worthy nominees and two were selected. The
PNC Foundation was honored as the Outstanding
Corporation for their donations towards the NICU and
the Perryman-Keglovits Foundation was honored as
Outstanding Foundation for their generous commitment
to the Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center.
PHF would also like to congratulate the two additional
awardees of the evening: Suzie Farley as Outstanding
Volunteer and Chuck Hannig as Outstanding Philanthropist.

Committee selected this
year’s recipients based
on a competitive grant
review process. The event
also included musical
entertainment from the
J.M. Hill Elementary
School Chorus, Stroudsburg
Jr. High School Chorus, and the East Stroudsburg North
High School Chorus. Santa arrived by the Borough of East
Stroudsburg Fire Department, and luminaries, sold in memory or in honor of loved ones, lined both sides of East Brown
Street in the festive event.
PHF and the Rotary Club of the Smithfields also raised
funds by the sale of red, green, and white holiday bulbs.
Representatives of the PerrymanKeglovits Foundation received the
“Outstanding Foundation” award on the
9th Annual National Philanthropy Day.
A Focused Gift
The First Keystone Community
Bank recently donated an in-kind
gift of eye equipment to the Pocono
Health Foundation. The eye
equipment will be used by Dr. Joseph
Conahan in Pocono Medical Center’s
Adult Primary Care Office at 175
East Brown Street, Suite 204, East
Stroudsburg. Dr. Conahan will donate
his time by offering basic eye exams
to un- and underinsured residents
with a specific focus on the
homeless and veterans.
The clinic will operate on the
first and third Tuesday of every
month from 9 a.m. to noon.

the second floor for our chemotherapy
patients. This bell symbolizes a return
to health, hope, and strength because
from Day 1 of diagnosis, you start
being a survivor. When you hear
the bell ring, you know someone has
completed a milestone and is on their
way.

On a blustery day…
in December, patients, staff, and visitors of
PMC were delighted to catch a glimpse,
through the Farda Pavilion lobby window, at
this small fawn, who decided the hospital’s
garden was the perfect place to nestle in for
a quick nap.

SPRING
PMC 2014 Auxiliary Gala
The chairs of this part year’s
PMC Auxiliary Gala were Auxiliary
members Rose Berardi and Denise
Cunningham. Held at the picturesque
Lodge at Mountain Springs Lake in
Reeders, PA, over 175 guests danced
the night away to the “Old Hollywood”themed event. With nearly $30,000
raised for the Dale & Frances Hughes
Cancer Center, the Gala was a huge
success and great fun was had by all.
The next Gala will be held in the Fall
of 2015, so stay tuned.
CIA & Broadway Trips
This past September, PHF held
its annual adventure up the Hudson
Valley in New York. First we stopped
at the Culinary Institute of America,
with a guided tour of the facilities
followed by lunch at American
Bounty Restaurant. After lunch we
moved downriver to visit FDR’s
mansion, where all enjoyed a tour
of the library and the museum.
Our next Broadway trip will be on
April 12th where we will anxiously
await the curtain to go up on “Aladdin.”
Before the show, a scrumptious
brunch will offered at the popular
Café Angus. On the way home, don’t
be surprised if our group on the deluxe
motor coach breaks into songs from
the show!
PHF Golf Tournament
The 27th Annual PHF Golf
Tournament will be held on Monday,
June 8, 2015 at the Great Bear Golf
Club. This year, the net proceeds
of the event will benefit the Valerie
M. Hodge Pediatric Dental Center
located in East Stroudsburg.
Annually, the Center serves over
3,000 un/underinsured patients aged
two through 18 with pediatric dental
care, providing care to those typically
unable to access this critical healthcare need.

Annual Employee
Basket Raffle
For the 17th consecutive year,
PHF held the Annual Employee
Basket Raffle on Friday, February 20,
2015, raising a total of $12,565.
Proceeds from the 2015 raffle will
be directed to the Pocono Health
System (PHS) Employee Crisis Fund,
which will assist PHS employees,
volunteers, and medical staff who are
experiencing a financial crisis as a
result of an unexpected event in
their life.
Since the fund began making
disbursements in 2008, we have
provided almost $95,000 to assist
110 PHS family members in crisis.
PHF RECEPTIONS
The showroom and furniture
factory at Frederick Duckloe and
Brothers was the setting for our
October 22 reception hosted by Joan
Duckloe, PHF board member, and the
Duckloe family. During the reception,
Dr. Goldner presented an overview
of PMC’s Community Care Network.
Also in October, Theresa Yocum,
PHF board member, hosted a “Wine,
Women, and Wisdom” reception at
her home. The event offered women
the opportunity to network and meet
PMC urogynecologist Rhadika
Ailawadi, M.D., who provided a
presentation regarding urogynecological
issues.
Then, in November, PHF board
member Ray Starner hosted an
information reception at the trendy
Ellias Restaurant. Great food and
conversation were in abundance.
Our guest speaker was Laszlo Fuzesi,
MD, Chief Medical Executive of
Cardiothoracic Surgery, PMC. It was
a great opportunity to reach a new
group of people and allow them to
learn about our state-of-the-art
ESSA Heart and Vascular Unit, as
well as many other exciting initiatives
happening at PMC.
