THURGOOD: A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
In this anniversary year marking the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of
Education decision, it’s fitting that we celebrate the man behind the
decision that ended the legal segregation of black and white students
in the United States. Working on this play I was able to learn so much
more about the man, his times, and what drove him to dedicate his life
to justice. What a gift to have James Craven bring his artistry and his
life experience to the portrayal of Thurgood Marshall. Personally, as I
dug deeper into Thurgood’s story, I discovered that I had cousins who
went down to Mississippi with the Freedom Riders to register voters.
It is Bonnie’s and my hope that Thurgood’s story will inspire us all to
strive to reach for as Langston Hughes said
“The Land that never has been yetAnd yet must be- the Land where
-every man is free.”
I want to express my gratitude to my friend and Illusion Board Member,
Sally Scoggin, for introducing this play to Illusion. I also want to thank
the members of the Thurgood Host Committee for extending its reach
into our community and inspiring action beyond the close of the curtain.
~Michael Robins

A MESSAGE FROM The President of the Board
How many businesses, partnerships and
friendships thrive for 40 years? This year
the Illusion Theater celebrates four decades of transformational art and awardwinning education work. We were so
proud when Illusion’s founders, Michael
Robins and Bonnie Morris, were honored
this year at the Ivey Awards with the
Lifetime Achievement Award. During
their acceptance, they asked those in
attendance to stand if they had ever worked with Illusion as an artist,
playwright, staff or board member and I’d estimate that half of the
people in the room stood! Over these 40 years, people have come to
the Illusion initially for many reasons. They have remained close
friends, collaborators, champions and supporters for many more reasons. A heartfelt wish of congratulations to Bonnie and Michael and
thanks to the wonderful staff, artists, board members—and YOU for
what has been, and what will continue for many more years, to be
inspiring art and education work that addresses important social issues and illuminates the realities and myths of these particular times.
Enjoy the show, come back for others, and please consider showing
your appreciation and support of the Illusion Theater with a financial
gift.
