About the
2013 Race Chair
Carmela Ledet, the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen’s®
2013 Race Chair, is a 20-year breast cancer survivor and
a community outreach volunteer for the Komen Houston
Affiliate. While she has always showed compassion for others,
she began actively raising funds for Susan G. Komen® after
her diagnosis in 1993. Her desire to help deepened in 2002
when she lost her close friend, Sharon Jennings-Roy, to breast
cancer. Under Carmela’s leadership, Sharon’s mother and other
close friends walked the Komen Race for the Cure® events in
both Houston and San Antonio to raise funds for breast cancer
research, education, screening and treatment. For the past 10
years, they have not missed a walk and are known as Sharon’s
Angels.
Working as an outreach volunteer, Carmela often serves in
communities where the rate of breast cancer tends to be
higher, and the access to health care is very low, often times
nonexistent. She believes the more women can be informed on
services available throughout the city, the more lives can be
saved. She speaks at surrounding churches about awareness
and attends health fairs and breast cancer awareness programs
throughout the city on behalf of the Komen Houston Affiliate.
In 2002, Carmela began working in the International Production Operations department for
Marathon Oil Corporation. At the time, she had no idea Marathon Oil would become the local
presenting partner for the Komen Houston Race for the Cure®. She soon began her service as
the Marathon Oil Volunteer Coordinator for the Race; coordinating as many as 300 volunteers
to staff the Marathon Oil Survivor Tent, water stations, cooling stations, signage teams, set
up and tear down teams, walkers and runners. She also coordinates volunteers for the annual
Marathon Oil Race for the Cure kick-off event held at the Marathon Oil Tower. Carmela is
honored and proud to work for a company that acknowledges and supports women’s health
issues.
For the past 12 years, Carmela has exceeded her fundraising goals and has garnered a spot on
the Komen Houston Affiliate’s Pink Honor Roll. As the 2013 Race Chair, Carmela aims to beat
the Komen Houston Affiliate’s overall fundraising goals, continue to promote breast health
awareness and spotlight the importance of screening until breast cancer is one day eradicated.
Carmela is the proud mother of one son, Jerrien Johnson, who is a senior at the University of
Texas at Dallas.

Deborah Duncan
KHOU-TV Channel 11
Deborah graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in
Radio-Television-Film.
After a couple of years in radio, Deborah made the switch to television as
a reporter at the CBS station in Austin and then became an anchor at the
ABC station. She later moved to Dallas, where she started a talk show
called “Good Morning Texas” at WFAA-TV, the sister station of KHOU-TV.
Deborah and her co-host were eventually asked to anchor the morning
news.
After three years, Deborah moved to New York City to co-host a talk show for Lifetime Television called
“Our Home.” Although she loved New York City, her heart was still in Texas. When ABC executives
approached Deborah about doing a talk show for possible national syndication, they wanted her to do
the show out of New York or Los Angeles. Eventually, they agreed that it could start in Houston. When
she finished her contract with ABC, Deborah decided it was time to return to her roots in the business,
and that was news.
In December 2002, Deborah joined KHOU-TV Channel 11 as an anchor on 11 News This Morning. After six
years at the news desk, she returned to the talk show format as host of Great Day Houston. The show,
produced locally by KHOU-TV, airs weekdays at 9:00 a.m. on Channel 11.
Deborah Duncan is the recipient of many local and national awards for television excellence, including
four Emmy Awards, three AWRT Star Awards, two Gracie Allen Awards and a Telly Award, amongst
other honors. Her achievements on the air, however, are transcended by her commitment and
dedication to community service. Deborah is passionate about many causes and chairs numerous
community events. In addition, she serves on the National Board of Directors for Mothers Against Drunk
Driving (MADD) and is a Board Member for the Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP).

Race
Background
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and
fundraising event for breast cancer to date.
The Series of 5K runs and fitness walks raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer
movement, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the
disease. Since it began in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series has grown from one Race with
800 people in Dallas to a global series of more than 140 Races with 1.6 million people making an impact
on five continents.
The Komen Race Series welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels, from walkers to elite runners.
A Lifesaving Impact
In the United States, Komen Race for the Cure® events are organized by local Komen Affiliates, and 75
percent of the net income from each Race stays in the host community to fund local programs offering
breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment. The remaining 25 percent supports
breast cancer research. Internationally, the ratio of funds varies, based on the country’s needs. Thanks
to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested nearly $1.9 billion to fulfill our promise,
playing a critical role in virtually every major advance in breast cancer. However, there is still work to be
done, and we need your help. Your donations and fundraising dollars will help us get to the finish line.
Footsteps Heard Around The World
Today, in addition to eight international Races conducted by our international Komen Affiliates, Susan G.
Komen collaborates with select NGOs in the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America
and Central Asia to host co-branded, culturally appropriate races. In 2012, Komen Race for the Cure®
events were held in the Bahamas, Belgium, Brazil, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Germany, Ghana,
Greece, Italy, Puerto Rico and Tanzania.
We’re In This Together
The Official Sponsors of the 2013-2014 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series are American Airlines,
Ford, New Balance, RE/MAX, SELF Magazine, Stanley Steamer, SunChips and Walgreens.
At each Race, breast cancer survivors are celebrated through the Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition
Program, co-sponsored on a national level by Bank of America and Zeta Tau Alpha. Breast cancer
survivors who wish to be recognized wear complimentary pink caps and T-shirts. Additionally, all Komen
Race participants are encouraged to wear “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs to honor
loved ones. These signature traditions are part of what makes the Komen Race for the Cure® Series so
unique.
The Komen Race for the Cure® Series would not be possible without the help of nearly 100,000
volunteers. The Volunteer Recognition Program, sponsored by Georgia-Pacific, the makers of Quilted
Northern Soft & Strong® Bath Tissue and Vanity Fair® Napkins, provides each Race day volunteer with
a unique T-shirt in appreciation of their efforts. Duties and recognition vary by location and may include
helping with registration, setting up staging or providing hydration along the Race course.

Komen
Susan G. Komen® is the boldest community fueling the best science and making the biggest impact in
the fight against breast cancer. Our global research and grants programs are essential driving forces for
achieving this mission. Our programs include:
Research and Scientific Programs
Komen has sustained a strong commitment to supporting research that will identify and deliver cures
for breast cancer. This commitment has resulted in important progress that has contributed to every
major advancement in breast cancer over the past 25 years. With increasing investments over time,
Komen is now the largest non-government funder of breast cancer research.
Komen’s Scientific Advisory Board guides our research focus, identifying the most promising areas of

most promising projects for funding. With the guidance of these experts, Komen invests every research
dollar as carefully and conscientiously as possible.
Community Health and Outreach
Our community health grants ensure quality care for all by funding breast cancer education, screening
and treatment projects for those who need them most. Through community needs assessments, more
than 75,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates identify unmet needs in their communities
and provide Affiliate community health grants to fill these gaps. Komen’s Global Headquarters also
administers the National Capital Area Grants Program to address breast cancer disparities of the
medically underserved in the capital area. And to ensure quality care and access around the globe, our
Susan G. Komen® Global Promise Fund works with local communities and international organizations to
develop innovative education and outreach programs.
Affiliate Community Health Grants
In more than 18,000 communities across the U.S., more than 75,000 Susan G. Komen® volunteers work

Facts About

In 2013, it is estimated that among

no family history of breast
cancer.
Breast cancer in men is rare,
but it does happen.
A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is

About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop
invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
•
•
Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly
diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under
30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.
White women are slightly more likely to develop breast
cancer than African-American women. However, in women
under 45, breast cancer is more common in African-American
women than white women. Overall, African-American women
are more likely to die of breast cancer. Asian, Hispanic, and
Native-American women have a lower risk of developing and
dying from breast cancer.
A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles
if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter)
who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 15%
of women who get breast cancer have a family member
diagnosed with it.
About 5-10% of breast cancers can be linked to gene
mutations (abnormal changes) inherited from one’s mother
or father. Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the
most common. Women with these mutations have up to an
80% risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime,
and they are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age
(before menopause). An increased ovarian cancer risk is also
associated with these genetic mutations.
In men, about 1 in 10 breast cancers are believed to be
due to BRCA2 mutations, and even fewer cases to BRCA1
mutations.
The most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender
(being a woman) and age (growing older).

Breast Cancer
Awareness
Know What Is Normal For You
The signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women. It is important to know how your breasts
normally look and feel. Many women have a pattern of lumpiness in their breasts, which is normal. But if
you feel or see any change in your breasts or underarms, ask your health care provider to examine the
area.
Women under age 40 with either a family history of breast cancer or other concerns about their
personal risk should talk with their health care provider about when to start getting mammograms or
other tests, such as a breast MRI, and how often to have them.
Early Detection
If breast cancer is found early, there are more treatment options and a better chance for survival.
A mammogram can find breast cancer before it can be felt. However, it is not perfect. But, when
mammography is combined with clinical breast exam your chances for finding cancer are even greater.
Remember, even if you feel healthy now, just being a woman and getting older puts you at risk for
breast cancer. Getting checked regularly can put your mind at ease. Finding cancer early may save your
life.
Breast Cancer Screening Tests
Mammogram — A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is the best screening tool used todayfor
early breast cancer detection. A mammogram can find cancer at an early stage when it is small and
easier to treat. Mammogram images can be stored on film (standard) or on a computer (digital).
Clinical breast exam — A breast exam by a health care provider should be part of your regular medical
checkup. If it is not, ask for it. A clinical breast exam includes a visual examination and carefully feeling
the entire breast — from the collarbone to the bra line, and from the armpit to the breastbone. If you are
40 or older, schedule your mammogram close to the time of your clinical breast exam.
Questions To Ask
Talk with your health care provider about your risk of breast cancer. Ask which screening tests are right
for you.
Here are some questions you might want to ask:
1. What is my risk for getting breast cancer?
2. Do I need a mammogram? If not, why not?
3. Where can I go to get a mammogram?
4. What if I cannot afford a mammogram?
5. How often should I get a mammogram?
6. How often do I need a clinical breast exam?
7. Should I consider other tests related to my risk?
8. Does my mammogram show that I have dense breasts?
