FIATA WORLD CONGRESS 13-18 October 2014 ISTANBUL S U S TA I N A B L E G R O W T H I N LO G I S T I C S WORLD CONGRESS ISTANBUL 13-18 October 2014 www.fiata2014.org SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN LOGISTICS In association with Hosted by CONGRESS LETTER OF INVITATION BACK TO THE FUTURE It was 2002 that we first welcomed the FIATA World Congress to Istanbul. All our memories are fresh, however, and the event is still recognized as one of the best FIATA gatherings. Back then, “Freight Logistics” was a rather new concept for us in Turkey. Our association UTIKAD had undertaken the mission to cultivate the culture of logistics in our country. Together with our members, we discussed logistics on every platform, particularly how to integrate logistics into our business transactions in order to lower the costs of the various individual elements within the supply chain and eliminate any bottlenecks between the connecting links. There was a substantial motivation behind these discussions: the desire to develop the country on a macroeconomic level by integrating its economy with the world’s, to enjoy the benefits of globalization, and to increase overall production and foreign trade. With its geo-strategic location, Turkey also possessed the potential to become a hub for Eurasia, where the most East of the West and the most West of the East could shake hands. Today, freight logistics is an integral part of sustainable development and growth all over the world. As logistics is a catalyst for development, the growth of logistics itself must also be sustained to meet the demand. The growth of global production and acceleration of urbanization created a demand for more investment and increased capacities in logistics. We need more roads, railways, airports, bridges, ports, and logistics centers. We must create new and additional trade routes in harmony with our environmental consciousness through a modal shift from road to rail and short-sea shipping. We should also raise the quality of our industry’s human resources in parallel to these changes. All these dynamics can be condensed into the ultimate aim of our industry: “Sustainable Growth in Logistics.” This is our motto for the 2014 FIATA World Congress in ISTANBUL. ISTANBUL is not just about business, nor merely an interesting place to discuss logistics. It is a cradle of civilizations, the historical capital of the Romans, the Byzantines and the Ottomans, and an exciting mosaic of all faiths and beliefs. You are all cordially invited to Istanbul, widely regarded as one of the most fascinating cities of the world with its history, culture, and passion. Turgut Erkeskin UTIKAD President Dear friends and colleagues, As President of FIATA, it is my distinct pleasure to extend an invitation to each of you to participate in the upcoming FIATA World Congress in October. This year’s Congress promises to be special, as the magnificent city of Istanbul serves as our host. The city itself spans two continents and has played an integral role in the history of trade. For millennia, Istanbul has served as the trading point at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, which today represents half of all world trade. This is the ideal place for our industry, as the facilitators of trade, to gather and discuss the future while reflecting on the past. However, Istanbul does not simply live in the past. Presently, the Turkish economy is growing strongly and is a key driver of growth for Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. One must only look to the growing role and global market share of the Turkish logistics and transportation industry, Turkish Airlines springs to mind, to see evidence of this. This also manifests itself in the proactive role that UTIKAD has played in FIATA in recent years. We are preparing an exciting Congress for you and you can look forward to a very interesting agenda including: several new FIATA projects will be presented to the industry; updates from the various Institutes, Advisory Bodies, and Working Groups; and guest speakers that will enrich our knowledge of trends in different areas of interest to our industry. So my friends and colleagues, I extended to you again the invitation to register and participate in the 2014 FIATA World Congress. I look forward to welcoming you in Istanbul.
