Introduction
The Monty/May 2011. Death and destruction in Japan, widespread unrest in the Middle East (this of course
is a waste of words), fears of debt defaults in the European Economic Union and the unease over the US
national debt all should contribute to a general feeling of trepidation and unease. However rejoice at being
in being in the heat treating industry, the optimism just keeps on growing. This issue of "The Monty" has
reports from three major furnace companies, Seco Warwick, Solar Manufacturing and Ipsen all of whom
are reporting that business is strong and getting stronger. A number of news items in this issue about the
potential blow to vacuum carburizers because of an acute shortage of acetylene would appear to be
resolving itself and as a further sign that the world is a brighter place for our industry we see that global
commercial heat treater Bodycote is forecasting a very good year and seeing it's stock reflect this. Yes the
world around us appears to be going to hell in a hand basket but heat treaters are reveling in a very
significant upturn in business which appears to be growing day by day. On a sadder note we see that Tom
Lotze, one of the pioneers of oxygen probe technology very recently passed away. He will be missed.
We look forward to hearing from our readers with their own news stories.

Bodycote. Global commercial heat treater Bodycote is seeing what most heat treaters are seeing these
days….improving business. The news report below from Reuters summarizes where the company is at.

What I find interesting is the specific mention about heat treating of heavy truck components, not quite
sure why this of all the areas Bodycote is involved in deserves a special mention. April 29/11
"Bodycote sees strong FY on demand from heavy truck makers. April 27 (Reuters) - British engineering
company Bodycote said on Wednesday it expected its headline operating profit for financial year 2011 to
be at the top end of analysts' forecasts on demand from heavy truck makers. Bodycote, whose operations
include heat treating jet engine turbine blades and other parts for car and plane makers, said sales for the
three months ended March 31 were 19.2 percent higher than last year. The company serves the
aerospace and defence, automotive, power generation, oil & gas, construction, medical and transportation
industries. "Heavy truck revenues have continued to increase strongly and sales to general industrial
customers have continued the robust performance seen in the latter part of 2010," the company said in a
statement. Analysts forecast a full-year headline operating profit of 55.5 million pounds to 76.6 million
pounds. Bodycote shares, which have gained more than half their value over the past year, closed at
336.4 pence on Tuesday on the London Stock Exchange, valuing the company at 631 million pounds."
Heat Treating Mexico. Yesterday we mentioned how aerospace components manufacturer HerouxDevtek was setting up a new facility in Queretaro, Mexico. We opinioned that if this facility follows the lead
of the other companies in this group any heat treating requirements would be outsourced. A reader in
Mexico (who should know) informed us that there are no commercial heat treaters in Mexico Nadcacp
certified with the possible exception of ALD TT in SALTILLO. April 29/11
Seco Warwick Update. We have encouraged our advertisers to provide us with regular updates about
how they are fairing, new products they are developing and what they are seeing in the market. The latest
update comes from Janusz Kowalewski, General Manager of Seco Warwick in China (new furnaces) who
provided us with these interesting and very gracious comments. April 28/11
"Beijing Heat Treatment Show. "With great expectations, I am waiting for the Beijing May 25th to 27th
Heat Treatment show to see all my friends from the US heat treatment industry. From the public
announcements, it looks as if we are all expanding geographically and materially with new products. An
example of SECO/WARWICK’s newest innovation is an entirely new integral quench furnace “Casemaster
Evolution” with an advanced low pressure carburizing system. Recently, I developed a list of companies
that I personally admire even though many times I’ve competed with some them and wished they weren’t
so good. The biggest surprise was that some of the companies are not very well known and some are of
foreign
origin.
So,

Heroux-Devtek Inc./Queretaro, Mexico. Based just outside of Montreal, Quebec, Canada Devtek is a
supplier of aerospace components, primarily landing gear. Landing gear heat treating is of course "top
end" with very few companies around the world certified to do this work. The firm has just announced that
they are investing $20 million in a 4,200 square metre facility in the booming Queretaro industrial park
which is home to more than 50 companies involved in the aerospace industry. Plans are that they will
start producing parts early in 2012. If this plant is similar to others in the group we would have to assume
that any heat treating will be outsourced which would be difficult in Mexico with few commercial heaters
having vacuum furnaces Nadcap certified. April 28/11
Elm Plating. A reader sent us this interesting item about Elm Plating in Jackson, Michigan a heat treating
and coasting company focusing on the fastener industry. What makes this article interesting is the effect
the recession had on the company, an experience which mirrored many companies around the world. April

"In the midst of the recession, Elm Plating was hurting. Sales dropped by 50 percent, pay and benefits for
the workers were cut and 75 percent of workers were laid off. Then its bank complicated things even more
by raising fees and interest rates on the company's loans. It almost caused the plant's closure. But last
year the third-generation family business was awarded a $2.5 million loan guarantee that allowed it to
refinance its debt and bring back laid-off workers. That was made possible by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture Rural Development's Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program, and was financed by
the federal stimulus bill. On Tuesday, Judith Canales, federal administrator of the program, was in Jackson
to tour the factory. She thanked executives from Ann Arbor State Bank, which partnered with USDA to
help keep the company afloat. "We can't do it without you guys," she said. Michigan's USDA Rural
Development State Director James Turner said the stimulus helped to fill the funding void when the larger
banks weren't lending to small businesses, or were calling in loans on struggling companies. Elm Plating
President Jonas McCluskey said he spent more than a year trying to find financing to keep the company
going before getting help from the USDA. "It was like a miracle when it finally happened," McCluskey said.
Since receiving the loan, he said the company has more than doubled its employment and he is paying
back the loan well ahead of schedule. The company employs about 120 at its plant, where workers do
finishing and heat treating on bolts and fasteners that are found in many vehicles. He has also purchased
an additional facility that gives them room for a new line of business, using an organic coating process.
"Business is really strong right now," he said."
CM Forge Group/Dixie Industries. The Columbus McKinnon Forge Group consists of two manufacturing
divisions, Midland Forge, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Dixie Industries in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Our focus
today is on Dixie Industries which makes forged components for ratchets primarily for the towing and
forestry industries. The company very recently started up their new in house heat treating department
which consists primarily of direct fired belt furnaces and pit draws. The company is to some extent
bucking a small trend towards outsourcing to commercial operations however there are quite a number of

reasons that manufacturers prefer to heat treat in house such as turnaround times and the ability to
control all aspects of their manufacturing. April 27/11
General Motors, Willow Run Plant/Ypsilanti, Michigan. May 17th to the 20th an auction will be held
for the equipment at the General Motors Willow Run transmission facility. Amongst the thousands of gear
machines available will be a smattering of used heat treat furnaces including several Holcroft
carbonitriding furnaces, some generators and a couple of belt furnaces. April 27/11
McLaughlin Services LLC. A fellow in the North American heat treating industry that we know quite well
asked if he could brag a bit about a new project he just did. Jeff McLaughlin of McLaughlin Services in Fort
Wayne, Indiana is probably best known as a furnace rebuilder/maintenance individual however Jeff also
has built quite a number of new furnaces over the years.The photos below show a project he has just
completed for 3 new furnaces which he built from scratch and had up and running in just 13 days which is
quite a feat considering these were custom built for this particular customer. These particular furnaces
were designed for normalizing at 2,000F. "All of us here at McLaughlin Services would like to thank all the
guys at Custom Electric, Super Systems, Summit Controls, and Wick-Fab. It takes a lot of hard work for a

Accurate Steel Treating Inc./Southgate, California, USA. Several years ago we made the prediction
that thermal salt processing would decrease due to environmental considerations. Reflecting upon this we
have to admit that this was not one of our more accurate predictions. Yes a number of older salt pot lines
have disappeared due to environmental issues and the cost of electricity however at the end of the day
salt is an excellent way of heat treating. We were partly correct (well maybe less than half right) but heat
treaters still buy new salt lines. Witness Accurate Steel Treating in California, a larger than average
commercial heat treater which offers Ion Nitriding, Vacuum, Gas Nitriding and batch IQ processing. The
company just installed and now has running a brand new high speed salt line built by Ajax. To this story
we have to add that heat treating in California is a world unto itself. With generally small volume,
aerospace related work the type of equipment that you see is quite unlike other areas of North America if
not the world. Of course we should add that it is typically higher margin work than areas such as Michigan
which is high volume, low margin. April 26/11
Solar Atmospheres Viewpoint. Our advertisers (which is a fine cross section of the most impressive
companies involved in the heat treating industry) are free to send us updates on what they are seeing in
the industry. Commercial vacuum heat treater Solar Atmospheres, probably the largest in North America
gives us this very cheerful update. April 25/11
"Current Industry View from the Solar Atmosphere Companies. All of our Solar H.T. plants are
running at near capacity except California where volume is just building, after start up in March. Recovery
from the 09 / 10 recession is short of amazing. Some older customers are not back but this business has

been replaced by new vacuum brazing accounts, our growing vacuum carburizing and vacuum nitriding
business, raw material processing like titanium and tantalum hydriding, and new processes spinning out of
our R&D center. We have continually invested in new vacuum furnaces adding two production furnaces
over the last year in our Souderton, Pa. facility and investing in several new fully computer controlled
furnace systems. Investment in several new high efficiency hot zones has been completed in both our
Souderton, and Hermitage, Pa. plants. We expect H.T. business to remain firm through this year with a
possible slight turn down in mid 2012 due to political uncertainly, and other economic predictions supplied
from the MTI business forecast.
Solar Manufacturing has a near one year backlog for new vacuum furnace business, primary from the
North American market, a major order from China, and good additional business potential from Europe.
Our engineering department is working on a new, yet to be announced, larger vacuum furnace, with
enhanced gas quenching capabilities, with the objective to fully harden alloy materials like 4140 and 8620,
in production quantities. This new furnace will be exhibited in the 2011 ASM heat treating exhibition and
conference set for Oct 31 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In summary, current business is good and will continue
because of the “Brightest Solutions Through Ingenuity” and investment. William R. Jones, CEO"
News Worth Knowing. "Metal Treating Institute" (MTI) is reporting sales for commercial heat
treaters in North America were up 21% for March of 2011 as opposed to the same period in 2010. For the
year so far total sales for MTI members (keep in mind that while MTI represents a majority of commercial
heat treaters in North America and is the largest organization of it's kind in the world some heat treaters
most notably Bodycote do not belong to the organization) have increased to $238 million USD an
improvement of almost 25%. Michigan saw the largest growth rate at 31% which is of course almost
entirely based on the automotive industry. Our personal feeling is that issues in Japan due to the recent
earthquakes has prompted Japanese auto makers to source more parts in North America hence a growth
in heat treating. On April 6 at 11:45 p.m., an explosive device was detonated in the parking lot of
commercial heat treater "R & R Heat Treating Company" in East Stroudsburg, PA. No injuries, minimal
damage and no idea who did this according to police. "BendPak" in Santa Paula, California, USA is
starting construction of a new 480,000 square-foot manufacturing facility. Wait for it-yes you are correct
the new facility will include a metallurgical lab, heat treating and an automated powder coating line. The
company makes light and medium duty lift products, select parking systems, as well as other vehicle
repair tools and equipment. "Engineered Sintered Components" in Troutman, NC is planning on
investing $9 million USD into their powdered metal auto parts facility. Whether this includes new sintering
or heat treating furnaces is unknown. April 25/11
Odds & Ends. "ASM HTS (American Society of Metals, Heat Treating Society) and IFHTSE (International
Federation of Heat Treating and Surface Engineering) are working together to bring the "6th
International Conference on Quenching and Distortion" back to the US. It is preliminarily scheduled
for middle of September 2012. The venue has yet to be determined. This event was first held 20 years
ago in Lincolnshire IL. Since then it has been held in Cleveland, Prague, Beijing and Berlin. We hope to
have a very good event on the 20th anniversary of this event. The Conference co-chairs are D. Scott
MacKenzie (USA) and Professor Bozidar Liscic (Croatia). We have a very strong international and
domestic Organizing Committee and hope to have a very strong technical event. It is expected that the
call for papers will go out in the very near future once details have been resolved." (Editors note; Gord
Montgomery is part of the organizing committee and as part of this will be asking for papers and
presenters). "Acetylene Shortage". Recent news items on this website have warned about the possible
shortage of acetylene which could cause enormous issues to companies doing vacuum carburizing.
Currently suppliers in North America are generally not accepting new customers but vowing to maintain
shipments to existing customers. However due to offshore supplies becoming available it is expected that

within 4 weeks the situation will return to normal. "Linamar Driveline Systems" in Nuevo Laredo,
Mexico is currently installing a large ECM vacuum carburizing system with installation expected to be
completed shortly. "Dave Stanton" who has been in the heat treating industry for quite some time has
joined Rexnord Bearings in the Indianapolis, Indiana, USA area as Process Engineer in charge of heat
treating, good man Dave. "Brevini Wind" in Yorktown, Indiana has just signed an agreement to supply
gearboxes to Windwind in Chennai, India. Brevini Wind was in the news August of 2010 when they
purchased a large batch IQ line from AFC-Holcroft in Wixom, Michigan. "Chennai: Winwind Ltd has signed
an agreement with Brevini Wind, a part of the Brevini Group to supply main gearboxes for Winwind's 1MW turbines to Winwind's manufacturing and assembly plant in India. The development and supply
agreement is for the manufacturing of 1 MW main gearboxes at Brevini Wind's newly established factory
in Yorktown, Indiana." April 21/11
Batch IQ Furnace Sizing. The most common size of batch IQ furnace in the world is the 30" X 48" X 30"
unit pioneered by Surface Combustion many years ago. Over the years thousands upon thousands of this
size furnace have been produced until they were eclipsed a number of years back by 36" X 48" X 36" or
36" X 72" X 36" size units. Then a funny thing happened, the recession hit, volumes shrunk and became
more sporadic and in the aftermath the smaller size furnace became wildly popular because of their
versatility. Their popularity has become such that prices for used units have risen dramatically and they
have become very hard to find on the used market. Now what is very odd is that while the "Super 30" size
furnaces are selling like hotcakes on the used market this does not translate into increased sales of new
furnaces this size. Most manufacturers of new furnaces still find the larger sizes to be what is selling,
Example; Surface Combustion is rumored to have 15 batch IQ furnaces on the floor in various stages of
construction and to the best of our knowledge all or most are 36" X 48" X 36" size or their larger cousin
72" deep. So the irony is that while on the used market the smaller sized furnaces are in highest demand,
on the new market the larger sizes are what are being purchased. Our best guess is that the larger
furnaces are very hard to find on the used market meaning buyers have no choice but to buy new. April

Ipsen Viewpoint April 2011. In our continuing efforts to make sure that our readers have the most up
to date news and industry trends available we have asked our advertisers to provide us with updated

about recent expansions and new plants and the "tantalizing" hint about more manufacturing in North

In 2008, Ipsen's Innovation team believed that this business model should also apply to heat treatment,
and an initiative called Project TITAN was born. Global acceptance of the American-made TITAN Vacuum
Furnace has exceeded expectations with systems already sold into 15 different countries, but we can't just
sit back and relax on the heels of that success. Our Innovation team is now busy working on TITAN 2.0.
American manufacturers realize that - service takes commitment - providing a quality product means
providing quality support. In recent years, we noticed that many of our customers' highly skilled
maintenance workers and technicians were retiring and not being replaced. We saw this change as an
opportunity to re-affirm our focus on service.
We started a program last year to double our service team within two years through a training school. We
then decided that this training could also help our customers build their knowledge base, and Ipsen
University (IpsenU) was born. Creating a standard development program has been a key building block for
providing all around quality to our customers.
American manufacturing's success is also linked to building a strong global support network. Globally,
Ipsen is expanding to better serve our customers. In the last year alone, we doubled our manufacturing
factory space in China, opened a service, sales and testing facility in Malaysia to serve ASEAN countries,
expanded our team in Brazil and broke ground in Bangalore for our second facility in India. The next 12
months will be no less active with further expansion plans - including expansion in the USA. With
continued focus on innovation, service and global support, American manufacturing is here to stay,

Ipsen Shanghai opened a second plant in greater Shanghai region town of Changzhou. The factory was
opened in mid-March to meet sharply increasing local demand in China for Ipsen thermal processing
equipment.

system of a 21 unit order. These customized systems were manufactured for a world leader in the mining
and oil sands exploration and are being used for induction hardening and tempering drill rods and

Acetylene Shortage. The hot topic in the world of heat treating over the past few days has been a
potential shortage of acetylene, primarily used in the heat treating industry in vacuum carburizing
applications (for the complete background please scroll down this page). Because this could prove to be a
major headache to the industry we have been researching the potential effects. Below we have comments
from two experts, Mr. Bob Esper, Marketing Manager, Aerospace and Automotive, Praxair Inc., (a
major supplier of industrial gases including acetylene) and Mr. Bill Jones of Solar Atmospheres (a very
large commercial vacuum heat treater in the US). To add to these comments we have been told by two
suppliers that there will be shortages, the only question is how serious they will be. April 18/11
"Acetylene is available to the LPC market commercially in two forms, industrial grade and chemical grade.
Both grades of acetylene are suitable for the carburizing process, the difference between the two grades is
the amount and type of impurities as well as the solvent used in acetylene cylinders. Industrial grade
acetylene is generated from a reaction involving calcium carbide and water. The calcium carbide process is
175 years old and still a good commercial process. Chemical acetylene is produced as a byproduct of
ethylene production in a continuous process. Although acetylene is acetylene, the two different production
methods mean there are different impurities and differing levels of impurities with each grade. Chemical
acetylene is generally higher purity with an overall lower level of other carbon species. The higher purity
translates into more reproducible, controllable carburizing cycles. Another major difference in the two
grades is the transport solvent. Acetylene is an unstable gas and needs to be transported in solution.
Industrial acetylene uses acetone as the solvent. Chemical acetylene is dissolved in dimethyl formamide
(DMF). The advantage of DMF is its lower volatility vs. acetone. For the LPC cycle this means lower risk of
the transport solvent being drawn into the furnace with the acetylene. The DMF solvent again means a
more reproducible, controlled carburizing process. Bob Esper, Praxair."
"Acetylene Issues. The very unfortunate explosion occurred about one month ago in a plant in Kentucky
supplying an ingredient of Acetylene. The Kentucky plant supplies 70% of the North American market. Our
supplier is PraxAir and in a telephone conversation today “they expressed some concern but not a panic.
They have alternate US sources and overseas sources of supply for this component of Acetylene. The
major use of Acetylene is for steel cutting, touch brazing, soldering, and the like. These are the heavy
users and with torch head conversion can convert to the lower cost propane.” Our purchasing department
was not advised of a problem or placed on allocation. Although our Magnetic Specialty plant using
acetylene for torch brazing was advised of the problem by another supplier and “suggested alternate gas
considerations for fuel i.e. propane or propylene.” It should be noted the consumption of acetylene in
vacuum carburizing is a fraction of the gas usage as compared to traditional atmospheric use of propane
or natural gas. This is because acetylene use in the vacuum carburizing reaction is only on the surface of
the steel alloy, catalytic if you wish, and not throughout the furnace, as in traditional atmospheric gas
carburizing, resulting in excess soot and tar build up. At Solar we do use the higher purity grade of

Acetylene, which of course carries a premiere price, more favorable to suppliers, as compared to lower

Tom Lotze 1928-2011. Steve Thompson of SSI shares his thoughts about Tom Lotze who passed away
this past Friday. Like Steve I will always cherish good memories of Tom and will remember him as truly a
pioneer in the field of oxygen probes in heat treating applications. April 18/11
"I wanted to share with you and your readers the recent passing of Thomas H. Lotze. Tom, as many will
remember, contributed a great deal to our industry. Tom first met my father, Bill Thompson, in the late

April 15, 2011. Born July 5, 1928 in Canton, OH, the only child of Louis A. Lotze and Veronica G. (Warner)
Lotze, he grew up in both the Akron OH and Los Angeles CA environs. He was a very proud fighting Irish
graduate of Notre Dame in 1950 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Devoted
husband for 56 years of Joanne, married September 1, 1951 in Sharon PA. Loving
father of six children: Dr. Michael T. (Dr. Joan Harvey) Lotze of Pittsburgh, PA, John
J. (Linda) Lotze of Brockport, NY; Hilary A. (Roger) Larkin of Gibsonia, PA, Jill I.

Bohler-Uddeholm Thermo-Tech/Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Bohler-Udedeholm is without a
shadow of a doubt one of the most impressive commercial heat treaters in the world. With a number of
relatively new, top end vacuum furnace in an impeccably clean location it really is a pleasure to see this
plant. We mention them today because the facility has a new Plant Manager, "Mr. Grant Robinson" who
until recently was the General Manager at captive/commercial heat treater Fused Metals in Georgetown,
Ontario. April 18/11
Potential Acetylene Shortage. For the background to this story we would suggest you scroll down to
the news item of yesterday (April 14/2011) but this is the brief summary. A recent explosion at a plant in
Louisville, Kentucky, USA has caused a severe disruption in the supply of acetylene which is crucial to heat
treaters doing vacuum carburizing. Based upon the story of yesterday we did some investigating as to
how this would affect heat treaters, this combined with feedback from our readers yielded this information
(we are hoping that one of the major suppliers of acetylene elaborates upon this Monday). The acetylene
produced by the plant in Louisville is actually a by-product of their process and would be considered an
"industrial" grade which if we understand correctly is a lower grade commonly used in welding. In North
America the alternative is a higher grade known as Acetylene DMF which is produced at a separate facility
and used by approximately half of heat treaters doing vacuum carburizing in North America with the other
half of course uses the lower "industrial" grade. As an example we understand that the largest commercial
vacuum carburizer in North America, ALD Thermal Treatment in Port Huron, Michigan uses the higher
grade and is assured of a steady supply. However the question remains; "Assuming the Industrial grade
acetylene will remain in extremely short supply will production from Acetylene DMF be enough to meet
demand"? We have heard that it might not. At this point we also understand that virtually all companies in
North America doing vacuum carburizing have expressed concern about this situation and are trying to
insure a continued supply. More to come. April 15/11
Carbide Industries/Louisville, KY, USA. Fairly recently we mentioned how the Carbide Industries
facility in Louisville, Kentucky which manufactures calcium carbonate suffered a terrible explosion which
killed two workers and shut the plant down. At the time our comment was that this could have
tremendous consequences for the heat treating industry and unfortunately it would appear that this
prophecy could possibly come true. Calcium Carbonate is a major ingredient in acetylene and this facility if
we understand correctly produces any where up to 70% of what is required. With the facility closed for an
indefinite period shortages of acetylene are already being felt. Why this potentially will have a very large
effect on the heat treating industry goes back to the history of Vacuum Carburizing. Originally vacuum
carburizing furnaces used propane as the carburizing gas, until it was discovered that acetylene does a
much better job. Because of this most vacuum carburizing applications switched to acetylene, what % of
VC units uses this medium we are unsure of however I would venture to guess most. With shortages and
rationing starting to come into effect this might mean VC furnaces shut down or converted to propane
which will of course take time. As most automotive transmission gears are processed in VC units this could
result in slowdowns in production of transmissions rippling throughout the whole auto industry in North
America and possibly the world. Reduced transmission manufacturing equals less automotive production.
We have already heard from several companies that they are facing shortages, if you have seen the same
thing or have thoughts on the matter we would appreciate hearing about them either anonymously or with

"LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Carbide Industries is launching its own investigation into the explosion at its
Rubbertown plant that killed two employees last month. While investigators are silent about the cause, the
company is concentrating on an aging furnace at the center of the explosion. Carbide Industries general
manager confirms the company is flying in experts from around the world to figure out what triggered that
massive explosion. Carbide Industries General Manager John Gant took WLKY on an inside tour of the

Rubbertown plant, including the eerie, burned-out remnants of a building that once housed a gigantic arc
furnace. On March 21, an explosion and massive fireball ripped through this building, killing two workers.
There are no official findings yet. "We've ruled out arson; we've ruled out employee error. It was some
condition inside the furnace which caused an explosion," Gant said. An arc furnace that cooked coke and
lime at temperatures of nearly 8,000 degrees to produce calcium carbonate, the highly volatile key
ingredient in acetylene torches. The furnace at the center of the explosion received routine maintenance
but Gant admitted it was due to be replaced in 2015. "It's a 29-year-old furnace," he said. "The typical life
had been 10 years prior to that until the rebuild of 1982." Still, Gant said there was nothing to indicate
there was anything wrong until the explosion ripped through the plant three weeks ago. "We don't think
there's something we overlooked, but obviously, we didn't intent for what happened to happen," he said.
Three separate investigations are now under way to figure out what did happen, including a Chemical
Safety Board review, but findings could take months -- even years. Carbide Industries is flying in experts
from around the world to conduct an internal investigation. "We want an unbiased, third party opinion,"
Gant said. "That's our main reason." The company also wants to find the cause quickly. Plans are under
way to install a new arc furnace and new building, with a startup date of April 2012. "When we start back
up, we have to know what happened, so we can prevent this from happening again," Gant said."
Odds & Ends. "Dibalog USA" has announced that they have landed orders for three (3) energy
optimization systems within the past few weeks. Two are from captive heat treaters in the southern US
and one is from a commercial heat treater in the Midwest. Dibalog is based in Heidelberg, Germany and
has over 1,000 installations around the world including almost 20 in North America. The company offers
energy optimization systems as a way of cutting down electrical heating costs in heat treating applications

Curtiss-Wright is one of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America with 6 locations around the
US, including Fort Wayne, Indiana, Wichita, Kansas, Lafayette, LA, Roselle, NJ, Salem, Ohio and
Emigsville, PA. At first glance this looks to be a very good fit for the company. "PARSIPPANY, N.J., Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE:CW) today announced that it has completed its purchase of the assets
of BASF's Surface Technologies business from BASF Corporation. The Surface Technologies business is a
leading supplier of thermal spray coatings for aerospace and power generation markets, and it will become
part of Curtiss-Wright's Metal Treatment segment. BASF's Surface Technologies business generated sales
of approximately $29 million in 2010 and has approximately 150 employees at its three operating facilities
located in East Windsor, CT, Wilmington, MA and Duncan, SC. All three facilities are ISO 9001 certified
and Nadcap accredited for thermal spray coating of aerospace components." "John Deere" Waterloo
Works in Waterloo, Iowa, USA is making a substantial investment in their heat treating department in the
form of a number of large batch IQ furnaces. Our understanding is that installation will start shortly. Heat
treating departments are always the "red headed stepchild" of any manufacturing facility and it is
impressive to see a manufacturer making such a large investment in their heat treating department. April
14-16th "AGMA and ABMA" (American Gear Manufacturers Association and American Bearing
Manufacturers Association) will be holding their annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. While this is not a
heat treat meeting as such the topic will be heavily discussed as it is such an integral part of the gear and
bearing manufacturing process and it could certainly be argued that this segment is one of the largest in
the world when it comes to heat treating requirements. April 13/11

Vac Aero International/Samsung. Now this is a real coup for Canadian company Vac Aero
International-an order for a very large vacuum furnace in Korea. Vac Aero is one of the largest commercial
vacuum heat treaters in North America while at the same time it is one of the top 5 builders of new
vacuum furnaces in North America. April 12/11
"World leader in Consumer Electronics Purchases First Vacuum Furnace from VAC AERO International!
OAKVILLE, Ontario, (April 11, 2011) - Korea-based Samsung Electronics has recently purchased a vacuum
furnace for hardening their captive press and plastic die moulds used in the manufacture of mobile
phones, LCD & OLED & PDF, refrigerator and washing machines. The furnace will be housed in Samsung's
new state-of-the Art facility in Gwangju Metropolitan City, Korea. The VAH6660 HV-6 is equipped with VAC
AERO's Honeywell HC900 interactive control system with complete network integration capabilities and
remote monitoring and control. The hot zone measures 48 in. wide 48 in. high 60 in. deep and comes with
a hot zone comprised high efficiency graphite felt, carbon composite and curved graphite elements. The
furnace operates at temperatures of up to 2400F. The vacuum pumping system includes a diffusion pump
for high vacuum applications to 10-5 Torr. Shipment is anticipated for summer 2011 delivery. This new
furnace will be the first of an anticipated three furnace order for VAC AERO's Oakville, Ontario-based
furnace manufacturing facility."
"Amarillo College/Lucifer Furnaces. Amarillo College, in the Texas panhandle, has installed a Lucifer
Furnaces Model HS84 Dual Chamber Furnace in their Manufacturing Technologies Department. The
furnace has two 12"H x 12"W x 24"L chambers mounted in a space saving arrangement. The upper
hardening chamber heats to 2450°F while the lower tempering chamber reaches 1400°F. With a heavy
gauge sheet steel reinforced shell and numerous safety features this rugged unit is well suited for the
needs of an educational facility. The upper chamber is insulated with 6 ½ inches of dry fit lightweight
ceramic fiber and mineral wool block for energy efficiency and heated with silicon carbide elements
mounted across the roof and below the hearth. An SCR power supply provides a steady low amperage and
voltage supply to the elements for longer life. A double pivot horizontal swing door keeps the hot face
away from the user at all times. The lower chamber is lined with insulating firebrick, mineral wool backup,
and a stainless steel liner, and heated with coiled heating elements in easy-to-replace holders mounted
along the side walls. A high volume rear mounted fan recirculates heat for uniform temperature. A
Honeywell digital time proportioning temperature controller is mounted in a separate cabinet on the side.
Professor Kim Hays, Chair of the Manufacturing Technologies Department, chose the furnace as part of the
school's program to teach the principals of heat treating of metals and describes the furnace as "ideal" for
the school's needs. Specifically he notes that this unit met his requirements both in terms of space and
budget. He praises the assistance he received prior to ordering the furnace and calls Lucifer's HS84
models "…the simplest most functional ovens that I have worked with. Everyone is impressed." April

providing us with some details about what to consider when choosing between Gas or Plasma Nitriding.

The choice between gas nitriding and plasma nitriding is usually a very difficult choice to make. The choice
will come down to depend on;
•

Capital investment,
Logistics
Necessary surface metallurgy and control that is required for the processed component.

Capital Investment: The capital investment always seems to be considered as the driving force for the
decision. Yes, the plasma systems are more costly than with the gas nitride. That is a correct assumption.
But that seems to be where it stops. When making the cost comparison, between the two process
techniques will generally be finished at the purchase price line. To have a true cost comparison, one really
needs to consider the cost comparison of operating costs as well as the primary investment. It will then
come down to considering the corporate amortization period of depreciation. After that, it really comes
down to the operating costs. Once the equipment is amortized then it comes down to the direct operating
costs of the equipment. It will be seen, that after the amortization period is complete, and then operating
costs of the plasma technology are reduced, because of the nature of the process. This is because of
process gas usage and power costs are lower. The writer has experienced the following approximate value
to obtain a conventional nitrided case, as being;

100ft³ of ammonia gas for 100ft² (approximate) of available surface area. (This is based on 5 to 7
process gas volume changes per hour). It further considers process temperature and time at
process temperature. The reason for the process gas volume on gas nitriding being high is simply
because the process vessel is being pressurized to a slight positive atmospheric pressure to act as
a ‘sweep gas’ to ensure process gas circulation within the process retort and work.

3 ft³ of process gas per hour (approximately)(nitrogen and hydrogen) for 100ft² work surface area.
The reason for the low flow volume is because we are only using the gas necessary to generate the
activity within plasma glow seam.
Logistics
The logistics consideration will be based on the;

What is the distance of travel from the manufacturing house to the heat treatment shop?
Do we have the equipment to enable us to observe and control the surface metallurgy achievable.

How quickly will the processed part be processed by the commercial heat treater?
Do we have the appropriate floor space to accommodate the equipment?
Can we maintain and service the equipment?
Process evaluation
The question is now, how to test, evaluate, and most importantly, how do we control the process? A small
metallurgical laboratory can be developed (or it is a pre-existing laboratory) for the process evaluation
that would include the following equipment;

The above is just some of control parameters that should be observed. Nitriding (gaseous or plasma)
process parameters need to be controlled if we are to produce continuous surface metallurgy and
reproducible results.
Hayes Heat Treating. Commercial heat treater Hayes Heat Treating in Cranston, Rhode Island, USA
suffered a small fire last week. The details below come from the 'Cranston Patch". April 11/11
"Cranston Firefighters responded to a fire at Hayes Heat Treating on Wellington Avenue Wednesday night
after a furnace malfunction. Nobody was injured. Firefighters said five employees were inside when the
fire erupted. They called the fire department who helped knock down the fire that started in the furnace
and traveled upwards to the ceiling. Fire officials will return to the scene tomorrow to search for a cause.
It is expected the business will open for business as well. Three engines and two rescue vehicles
responded to the scene. Hayes Heat Treating, located at 800 Wellington Ave., is a specialty heat treating
and brazing facility, according to the company's website. The business was established in 1962."
Alfe Heat Treating. North America's largest commercial aluminum processor, Alfe Heat Treating would
appear to be a generous bunch. April 11/11
"Alfe Heat Treating donated $5,000 - in the form of two scholarships at $2,500 apiece - to IPFW's Richard
T. Doermer School of Business and the College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science,
respectively. A news release from the university said Alfe Heat Treating's first donation to the university
was more than 10 years ago for $500 and that the company's contributions continued to grow over the
years."
PPC/Metallum, LLC. With a very modern, impressive 80,000 square feet facility commercial heat treater
PPC was a good sized operation in Canton, Ohio. The company offered open fire continuous Normalizing,
Annealing (Full, Subcritical, Isothermal, Spherodize), Stress Relieving, shot blasting and coating. Late last
year the firm closed down and set up shop as Metallum LLC in Minerva, OH. Unfortunately things did not
work out as planned and very unfortunately Metallum closed earlier this year. Because the company did
have fairly large capacity this has benefitted the other large players in this market, Atmosphere Annealing,

Halliburton/Lafayette, LA. Halliburton, one of the world's largest oilfield services companies, plans on
building a new, $65 million manufacturing plant in Lafayette, LA, USA. The facility will be 200,000 square
feet with construction to start in July of 2011 with completion by the end of the first quarter of 2012. Long
time readers will know of course where this is heading, in addition to turning and milling equipment the
plant will also have an in house heat treating department. Currently Halliburton includes heat treating in a
number of their facilities, while we are guessing on this our guess would be that the heat treating will take
the form of batch IQ furnaces. April 7/11
Bluewater Thermal/Jennifer McPeek. Now this is very interesting, Jennifer McPeek has joined
Bluewater Thermal as their Southeast Region Business Develpment Manager. Jennifer ran Suncoast Heat
Treating for many years, very competently as we understand it and when the company was acquired by
Braddock Metallurgical we lost track of her. Excellent fit with Bluewater in our opinion. April 7/11

in Rossville, Georgia is in the process of shutting down. This was a very small commercial shop that over
the past few years had been relying on one customer. Always a shame to see. April 5/11
Marty Keylon. One very well known individual in the heat treating industry in California is Mr. Marty
Keylon. For years he was with commercial heat treater Bodycote eventually becoming the "direct spoken"
(which is of course slang for speaking his mind) General Manager of the Santa Anna facility. Marty left the
company a number of years back and after a short interval became Senior Sales Manager for North
American Cronite (cast high temperature alloy components). His path has changed slightly and he has
joined that elite brotherhood of independent manufactures reps serving the heat treating industry. His
new company is called "Keylon Thermal Consulting" which will serve as a rep organization for North
American Cronite, BeaverMatic as well as consulting and mock OSHA inspections. He will be covering Calif,

Names in the News. "Mike Roy" has been hired by Ipsen (new furnaces) as a field service technician in
the New England area. Our personal feeling at "The Monty" is that this is one of the hardest positions to
fill. Finding people with good qualifications that are willing to spend most of their time on the road away
from family is not easy. Hauck-Kromschroder has hired "Mike San Antonio" as Commercial Sales
Manager. Hauck-Kromshroder is a manufacturer of burners and controls. Bodycote (commercial heat
treating) in Eden Prairie, Minnesota has hired "Mike Cornelius" as General Manager. This particular
location offers Batch IQ, Continuous, vacuum and nitrocarburizing amongst other processes. April 4/11
Japan. We have two first hand reports from Japan and how the recent earthquakes/nuclear situation has
affected the country, industry and heat treating. The first comes from Julian Bashore of Bodycote, Japan.

"As of today (Friday, April 1, 2:00 p.m. local time), Bodycote Japan is operating under normal conditions
and we can account for all employees and their immediate families. Our location in Nagoya is about 500
kilometers (300 miles) from the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The initial earthquake on March 11th
and aftershocks in the following days were felt here in Nagoya. Recently, there have been no more
aftershocks in our region; however, aftershocks continue in Tokyo and the area northeast of Tokyo."
“My apologies for the delay with my reply as I am in the process of making my way back to the US from
Japan. The full effect from the accident at the Fukishima Daiichi nuclear power station won't be
determined until they get the situation under control. They are far from there yet. Just the other day we
learned of the presence of plutonium in the soil near the plant and more radioactive water leaking into the
ocean. It seems every day they make some progress only to move two or three steps backwards as they
learn more of the damage. It is frustrating as I feel for them. The cooling systems are still not operational
and they have contamination throughout these facilities making it difficult for the operators to spend much

time repairing the damage. Four of the six reactors will have to be scrapped. The full assessment of the
damage will not be known for awhile. The loss of electric power from these nuclear stations is a problem
for the customers these reactors serve, although I haven't heard as much about this recently. I think the
voluntary reduction in power by consumers is helping. However, it appears to have affected our
competition in that area. But we aren't sure. The latest talk revolves around the potential for
contaminated food and water. They did find trace amounts of radioactive material in the water supply in
Tokyo last week, but nothing more. I think this is the greater concern right now. My agent was monitoring
from where our food was coming, but it is often so hard to determine. Particularly if you are eating a lot at
restaurants. Away from the affected area where I was life goes on pretty much as usual, however during
the first week I know our agents were watching for airborne contamination making its way down to Kobe.
However none made it this far down as we are some 350 miles from Fukushima. I am told that the
population is a little wary of everything that is being told them by their government. They feel the
government might be holding back so as not to create general panic. This is particularly a concern for
such large population centers as Tokyo where you have a lot of people. Panic there would not be good.
But all in all I feel safe here in Japan and out of harms way. The Japanese are extremely efficient and
competent people. So I do trust them to a large extent even though some of their people may be
skeptical. I think that is the feeling of the foreigners too who are familiar with Japan. I would gladly stay
but my tour of duty is up for this trip. Nonetheless, there is great opportunity in Japan. It is a great

"United Process Controls (www.group-upc.com) completed a turnkey project for Baldor Electric to
upgrade furnace controls and automate heat treat operations at the company’s Greenville, SC plant. After
many years of satisfactory service, MMI legacy controller-based systems of tempering and carburizing
furnaces used for heat treating gearbox components had become obsolete. Reliability and downtime were
becoming a serious concern, and the old control systems had limitations in meeting the company's new
automation strategy and traceability requirements. To optimize and centralize control, UPC scrapped the
old control consoles and replaced them with compact, state-of-the-art control systems based on the
Protherm 600 programmable controllers for monitoring and controlling all furnace process parameters.
The scope of the control upgrade also included PLCs, motor controls for fans, conveyors, oil and agitators,
VRT controls, supervisory flame pilots, SCR heater controllers, and Waukee's AccuBlendor™ endothermic
generator systems with turndown control for just-in-time delivery of mixed gases. All controllers and
control systems are interfaced with the Protherm 9800 production management software, which performs
data acquisition, data analysis, alarms and recipe management, monitoring, and much more. The
Protherm 9800 also allows live, real-time remote viewing and control of furnace control systems, and it
incorporates modules for laboratory documentation and process design. The 'Quality Control Lab'
documentation module lets operators review and assess laboratory and testing information. The Diffusion
module provides two-part functionality. First, it takes the complexities out of the creation, modeling and
optimization of carburizing processes; and second, it can execute and control a carburizing treatment in a
fully automatic self-correcting mode.

• Hardening Furnace - Furnace hot zone is 144 inches from inner wall to drum center and is capable of
producing 1000 to 1200 lbs/hour of light gauge stampings running at a belt speed of 14 “/min. and a
loading density of 12 lbs/SF. The 48 inch wide belt is of fine closed weave design in order to prevent part
mixing. The full range of furnace belt adjustment is 10-20”/min. The furnace opening at the preheat has
been closed down to about 2” because the original part loading was 1” at Tinnerman. The overall height
can be easily increased to 6” for commercial use.
The 14’ overall heated length is heated by 9 sealed radiant “U” tubes w/direct spark ignition and all tubes
have recuperators. The temperature operating range is 1475-1725˚F. Maximum temperature is 1900˚F.
There are two zones with Fanuc PLC2 Honeywell Temperature Controllers, (2) Honeywell Oven

• Metro Loader - Includes a hydraulic tote dumper, parts hopper, two vibratory trays with load cells. This
unit is controlled by a computer and has proven to be an exceptionally flexible and accurate parts loader.
It can be installed so that one tray can be shuttled aside in order to hand load the furnace.
• Hardening Furnace - Furnace hot zone is 144 inches from inner wall to drum center and is capable of
producing 1000 to 1200 lbs/hour of light gauge stampings running at a belt speed of 14 “/min. and a
loading density of 12 lbs/SF. The 48 inch wide belt is of fine closed weave design in order to prevent part
mixing. The full range of furnace belt adjustment is 10-20”/min. The furnace opening at the preheat has
been closed down to about 2” because the original part loading was 1” at Tinnerman. The overall height
can be easily increased to 6” for commercial use.
The 14’ overall heated length is heated by 9 sealed radiant “U” tubes w/direct spark ignition and all tubes
have recuperators. The temperature operating range is 1475-1725˚F. Maximum temperature is 1900˚F.
There are two zones with Fanuc PLC2 Honeywell Temperature Controllers, (2) Honeywell Oven
Temperature Controllers, Yokogawa Computer Monitoring System w/Satellite Monitoring Capability. Roof
Mounted Axial Flow Recirculating Fan, and Super Systems Oxygen Sensor and Control Box for carbon
control.
Atmosphere: The furnace is currently set up for endothermic atmosphere. We can provide a conversion to
nitrogen methanol if required. Methane additions are provided and an ammonia flowscope can be provided
and desirable if one wants to be able to carbo-nitride or carbo-austemper parts.
• Austemper Tank- Capacity 4,500 gallons/72,180 lbs of salt with a maximum temperature limit of 800˚F.
