We’ve had an interesting back and forth in the newsletter between those who would like people to follow
the bylaw and leash their dogs at Glengarry Park (21st
Ave and 26th St) and those who prefer to treat it as an
off-leash park. We’ve received a handful of emails on
both sides. I understand both sides’ argument but my
thoughts are this. The park allows on-leash dogs. Having your dog off leash is against the City bylaws and you
could get a fine if you are caught. The park is not set
up safely to be an off-leash park as there are no fence
or bushes between the playground and field. If dog
owners want this to be an off leash park they should
engage their neighbours and propose the necessary
changes to make it an off-leash park. If the majority of
nearby residences agree, then work with the Community Association and the city to raise the funds and make
the changes. Until then, the neighbourly thing to do
would be to keep your dogs on the leash when you’re
at this park and go hit the Shaganappi off-leash park for
some off-leash fun with your dog.

I need to give a huge thanks to Antony Brozinic, Kyle
Mendritzki and Cortney Steinwand. These three along
with a few other volunteers planned a fantastic summer community event. The bands The Sweets, Rosiland,
Lauren Mann and dj’s Cheapa$$ Charlie, and Androway
were all top notch. Zoltan is the man responsible for
making them sound so great—he was the sound guy! If
you get a chance to check out any of these acts, I highly
recommend it. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped
out during the day and also the Legion for lending us
their barbeque until our rental arrived! I hope we can
make this an annual event and make it bigger and better every summer.

to our first annual Summerfest
in July, thanks for coming out.
It was a fantastic event and the
bands, beer garden, bouncy castle, vendors, food, face
painting all made for an awesome day. We had over 200
people in the park before the weather started to turn
mid-afternoon. Luckily the storms stayed to the North
and we got to finish a great summer day in the park for
those that stuck it out.

Looking to the Future - Traffic and Parking from
New Developments
Did you see the news? The Civic Census tells us that
28,017 people moved to Calgary in 2014. Killarney’s
population is now 7,231: so enough people moved to
Calgary in 2014 to populate Killarney 3.9 times over.
We now live in a City of 1.2 million people. The oil
slump may slow the tide of people flowing into the
City but we can still expect huge numbers to keeping
moving here. Every year. Year after year.
The scary question is ‘Where are these new residents
going to live?’ Killarney is a small dot on the map of our
newly huge City and a small part of the Calgary equation Side by side attached new homes that were our
typical new construction are expensive for the average homeowner to buy, so now we can expect more
construction of relatively affordable homes in the form
of townhouses and apartments. Along with this housing density comes traffic congestion and parking woes
that will spiral up and up until we become cosmopolitan enough to give up our cars completely.
When the KGCA Development Committee talks with
residents about development of a townhouse complex or a day care or a business, the concern that ranks
highest is increased traffic and shrinking street parking. KGCA also boasts a very able Traffic Committee
who look at ways to mitigate the changes that are the
consequence of new development - your concerns
are heard and acted upon. But although one town
house complex or a dozen new small businesses may
increase traffic to a degree, the actual realized impact
is usually small when compared to our expectations.

What is not so small are the huge new developments
planned for areas around Killarney.
In July a huge stack of plans for Phase 1 of the Transit
Oriented Development (TOD) at Westbrook Station
thumped onto the office desk. Although the TOD is
not within Killarney’s borders, it will have a huge impact on our community, so we were invited to comment. Phase 1 is three large buildings with retail on
the main floor and living spaces above that is to be
built on the NW corner of 33rd Street and 17th Avenue. These buildings will have numbers of small
apartments, a large grocery store on the ground floor,
and a huge parking garage below that. When completed, the Westbrook TOD is expected to have living
spaces for 5,000 people.
You may have visited an open house for the Canada Lands development of Currie Barracks south of
33rd Avenue. Plans are in place for a subdivision full
of attached homes, low rise and high rise apartment
buildings, retail and office spaces. Work started on the
Flanders Avenue exchange - designed to absorb more
traffic - early this summer. When completed Currie Barracks is expected to accommodate 11,000 people.
North in the Shaganappi Community, demolition of
homes at Jakes Point started last year in preparation
for another dense community, placed to take advantage of the LRT station at Shaganappi Point. We don’t
know the numbers but we can expect a considerable
increase in traffic down 26 Street.
And then, as KGCA President Mike Cundall reminded
me, there is the new Ring Road.
Traffic is going to be an abiding problem in our Community. Please lobby every chance you get for accessible and convenient transit - in the long run transit
may be our only solution to the nasty traffic dilemma.

PLAYGROUND update
We want to give a HUGE “Thank You” to all the volunteers who committed to building our new playground
behind the Killarney pool! Now that the playground is
installed, you may be wondering why it is fenced off.
Shortly before our scheduled demolition and new installation, we learned that the supplier for our new
pour-in-place rubber surface had run out of rubber,
so they couldn’t install the surface as scheduled. The
demolition and installation went ahead as originally
planned, as it was not feasible to reschedule the City of
Calgary crew.
As such, we are left with a fully-built playground, but
we won’t be able to access it until the end of the month
when the rubber surface is installed. We know the playground looks incredibly enticing, but we promise you it
will be worth the wait!
Can’t wait to explore the new playground with you later
in the month!

Low interest rates may have you thinking about taking on more debt: the cost of a new home, ‘moving up’
to a larger home or refinancing your existing home. If
so, knowing what’s what with mortgages can save you
money now and in the future. To get you going, here are
some of the mortgage basics you should know.
Rate-ability The interest rate for a variable rate mortgage is usually lower than that for a fixed-rate mortgage
but:
•A fixed-rate mortgage locks in your interest rate for
the full term so you have the security of knowing your
monthly payment will remain the same.
•The interest rate of a variable rate mortgage is tied to
various fluid market conditions that can increase your
interest rate and mortgage payments at any time.
Flexibility A flexible mortgage usually includes the
ability to change your payment frequency, increase
the amount of your regular payments, or apply an additional lump-sum payment each year without a fee –
meaning you can pay off your mortgage faster and save
on interest costs.
Portability Mortgages usually have an amortization
period of 25 years and a locked-in term of five years however life is not always that “typical”. A new job, new

Congratulations on a successful Community Cleanup on May 3rd.
With the street reaching the end of its life-cycle in this
area, 17 Avenue South needs to be reconstructed from
“dirt to pavement”. The reconstruction involves underground utility work, building a new foundation for 17
Avenue South, and then paving and marking the surface. The project also includes a road safety review on
the current traffic lanes, intersections, collision rates,
and how people currently use the street. Recommendations from the safety review are expected to be part
of the final design. Finally, The City will also look to improve the sidewalks and pedestrian areas on 17 Avenue
South between Macleod Trail S.E. and 4 Street S.W.
Design work on the project is underway until the end of
2015. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2016
and be completed in fall 2017. For the most up-to-date
information, such as project details, schedule, progress,
and upcoming events, check out calgary.ca/17avenue.
By reconstructing this piece of 17 Avenue South now,
the street will continue to serve citizens and business
for decades to come.

With summer arriving, I have been busy meeting
with constituents and listening to their concerns and
helping with their issues. Since my last update, my office is now fully up and running with staff and regular
office hours.
I took a little longer than my peers to get running as I
wanted to ensure I hired the right team of people to
serve Calgary Currie. I have also received comments
about the old sign still being up at my office. The office sign is important, but I consciously focused my
time on serving constituents. By the time this report
is published, I expect my new sign should be installed. My door is always open to constituents and I
invite anyone with concerns to call my office to make
an appointment to see me.
In the legislature, the government caucus has been
busy implementing our promises. In the most recent
short legislative session, we banned corporate and
union donations to political parties, and established
an all-party committee on democratic reform. We
also increased funding to education to ensure 12,000
new students this year would have enough teachers,
and froze post-secondary tuition rates. In health care,
we announced the new cancer centre to be built at
Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, and we scrapped
the proposed health care tax, as well as increased
funding for health care to prevent the layoff of thousands of health care workers while also ensuring
quality of services.
My constituency office is open. I look forward to
hearing from you.

Last September we experienced the tremendous
snowstorm that blanketed Calgary with a foot of
snow, damaging a huge proportion of City trees. Each
of Ward 8’s communities were impacted, some more
heavily than others, but the damage was felt everywhere. As we reach the anniversary of “Snowtember”,
it’s important to look at how the City of Calgary has
reacted and recovered.
This campaign that the City launched is called ReTree
YYC, and it has held a series of fairs throughout the
spring and summer. Back in February, when I discussed the outcomes of the snowstorm, this program
hadn’t started, but since then it has accomplished a
great deal. We’ve seen trees replanted, awareness
raised, and our neighbourhoods come together yet
again. The last ReTree YYC fair for 2015 will happen on
Saturday, September 19 at Confederation Park. Here’s
what you can expect at the fair:
•Experts from both The City of Calgary and related
industries
•Free trees and mulch so that we can personally help
with the replanting effort
•Activities, entertainment, and food for all ages

How time flies, September is here already and another
beautiful Calgary summer is coming to a close. It has
been a summer full of fun and festivities, but your government has remained hard at work, ensuring that we
continue to pursue the priorities of Canadians. That’s
why I wanted to write and tell you about some of the
things I am proud our government has accomplished.
This July marked a significant step forward for Canadian
families across Canada and for transit improvements for
the City of Calgary.
On July 20th, hard working moms and dads across Canada woke up with more money in their pockets thanks
to the enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), in
what was the biggest single payout to parents in Canadian history, $2.986 billion.
With the enhanced UCCB the payment for kids under
6 is now almost $2,000 per year. The enhanced benefit also introduces a new payment for all kids ages 6
through 17 of $720 per year. Parents can spend this
money on anything they choose, including child care
services, back-to-school supplies, sports activities and
much more, while boosting the economy and creating
jobs across Canada.
Everyone gets more money with the enhanced UCCB,
and is now merged with the Child Tax Credit. This means
that low-income families with no taxable income who
previously did not benefit from the Child Tax Credit are
now better off.
To get Calgary moving, on July 24th I joined the Defence Minister, Jason Kenney, to announce a $1.53 billion boost from the federal government to the Green
Line Light Rail Transit in Calgary, through the new Public
Transit Fund. It’s a significant step forward for Calgary
infrastructure and could create up to 23,000 jobs, promote economic growth and reduce city wide congestion by 10 to 15 percent.
Construction will get underway in 2017 and the Green
Line will have 5 stops in our riding of Calgary Centre.
They will be 7 Avenue S, 4 Street SE, Inglewood/Ramsay,
Crossroads and Highfield Boulevard.
A strong and efficient public transit network will improve our quality of life and help Calgarians get to their
jobs, students to class, and citizens out and about to
visit family and friends.
