A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, usually
defined as a persistent fear of an object or
situation in which the sufferer commits to
great lengths in avoiding.
Presented here are two features; a d1000
chart that lists 500 phobia name. Some of
these are duplicates, or alternate names for
the same phobia.
The second is a system for using phobias in
your game

To use a D1000 chart, roll 3 d10s, ideally each
one being a different colour. Nominate one
for 000s, one for 00s and the last for 0s. Roll
all 3 and check the result.

Why Use Phobias?
Good question! Why would you want to use
something that has the potential to have your
PCs/NPC gibbering in the corner?

Exposure to the phobia
A good rule of thumb to use is each time the
one who suffers is exposed to the phobia,
times the severity rating by 4. You have to roll
equal to or above this to be able to deal with
the phobia. With crippling, which is a 5, you
have to roll a 20!
Sa
mp

Effects of Phobias in game
If you pass, well done! You gain immunity to
having to be tested again equal to 10 minutes
– the severity rating. Failure however means
moving onto the next section.
file

They add flavour to characters and
make them seem more “real”
They can help make adventures more
interesting – after all suffering from a
crippling fear of spiders and you have
to go to “The Cave of REALLY big nasty
spiders” is not going to be easy
For characters, knowing what, if any,
phobias the enemy suffers from can
help. After all if the big bad
necromancer, feared across the 5
kingdoms, has a secret fear of rabbits
that leaves him lying in a pool of his
own mess…what animal would you
bring along with you or polymorph
into?
Some systems have a system that for
every negative/flaw taken you gain
points to spend on stats or some
other kind of bonus. If using this type
of system, then the number after the
severity of the phobia e.g. Crippling(5)
gives more than Uncomfortable(2).
One good example is to be able to reroll any non-phobia related dice roll
(per game adventure, not session) for
each point in severity. This resets
when a new adventure starts.

What counts as exposure?
Some example of exposure to the subject may
include (but not limited to):
 Seeing the subject matter
 Hearing it being talked about it detail
 Being shown a picture/diagram etc.
(but kind GM’s may allow a bonus to
the phobia test for this one)
Range of exposure
There are two main stages for determine
what phobia they have:
The greater the severity of the phobia, the
greater the range before you have to test. To
keep it simple, range, in feet is severity x 10
1. Determine the phobia – This for many
players and GM’s will be the only step
needed – Roll on the d1000 chart to
find out the phobia the (n)pc suffers
from. Feel free to create your own
phobias using
2. Determine, by rolling on the chart
below (or picking), how severe the
phobia is.
3
Price of Failure
Faint/Collapse
Subject collapse and becomes a “dead”
weight. If they are attacked or damaged they
wake up, but can’t defend themselves, or, do
anything apart from breath normally. When
they awake they can be groggy/slowed for 10
x severity in seconds.
If you pass the phobia test, well done, you can
deal with exposure to it and can continue.
Failure however results in a negative effect
being applied to the one who is suffering. The
duration is equal to the severity of the phobia
in minutes or combat rounds, as appropriate
for your game system
Fascination/Fixation
The subjects’ awareness fixates on the trigger
of the phobia. They HAVE to know where it is
at all times, they have to keep it in sight, but
at a safe distance, for example.
Not everyone copes with failing the same
way. You can either have the same result each
time, or roll for each failure. Feel free to
create your own reactions to failure.
le
file
If the subject can’t get away from the trigger,
then before the duration of this effect ends,
then they must roll again on the failure chart,
but using a 1d4

Flee
The subject does everything within their
power to leave the room, or, get at least
severity x 10 in feet away from the trigger.
Anger/Attack
Some people express their fear through anger
and rage. They do everything they can to
attack the subject of their phobia to the
exclusion of their own safety and other more
dangerous targets.
Scream/Panic
The subject moves in a random direction
(away from the trigger) every few seconds,
screaming and generally panic. Can do basic
attacks, but will just as likely hit any allies
within 10 feet as their enemies.
Slowed
The phobia occupies much of the subjects
mind. So much it slows their reactions and
they go last in combat. Spells and other
abilities take twice as long to do, etc.
Catatonic/Frozen in fear
The subject of their phobia can make some
react by shutting down. They have to be
moved by others and only their armour will
protect them
Obviously use common sense when reacting
to phobias triggers, as not all of them can be
avoided easily etc.
GM’s: If your players act out the phobia well,
consider granting them a bonus to experience
or other reward
Confused/Suggestible
For some, the phobia occupies so much
mental space that they become confused as
to who and what their own friends are. They
will believe anyone who removes or even
offers to remove the phobia causing subject.
