JAMES NICHOLSON WINE MERCHANT
THE LIST
2014
Welcome
Welcome to our 2014 retail list. We have continued to take a zero
tolerance line on quality and have added many exciting new talents
like Spain’s Dominio del Bendito from Toro, Carmelo Rodero
from Ribera del Duero and Clos d’Agon from Catalunya. We are
delighted to be able to offer the superb whites of northern Portugal’s
Quinta de Soalheiro, including a superb sparkling Alvarinho, and
we have some interesting newcomers from Languedoc Roussillon
among our many new producers. The 2013 vintage has been a real
challenge in Europe with a small and difficult harvest and most of
our team of growers are really hoping for something special in 2014.
We are currently travelling and tasting the new vintage in most
regions and it is clear from all that we have tasted so far that our
objective should be to buy and hold as much stock from previous
vintages as we can.
We will offer many opportunities to taste this year and have already
scheduled visits from a large number of our growers. This is
shaping up to be an exciting year.
Yours in wine,
Voted Regional Wine
Merchant of the Year 2013
at the International Wine
Challenge for the 21st time!

 Roger Sabon Côtes du Rhône 2012, France
"One of the great visits of 2012 was to the Rhône and to Roger Sabon in particular. This wine
totally overdelivers on price and quality from a top notch CNDP producer."
11.5010.35
 Les Bancels 2011, Domaine de Cébène, Faugères, France
"Wonderful up-and-coming producer in Faugères. We met Brigitte Chevalier on a trip to the
south of France earlier this year and were charmed by her, and how her smart, organic approach
to growing is showing in this top quality wine. One to watch."

Averil Johnston
 L'Effet Papillon Rouge 2012, Regional France
"New to JNWine from one of our favourite winemakers Marjorie Gallet. This is a delicious blend of Carignan, Grenache & Syrah; soft and approachable with plenty of fruit, far too easy
to drink and not a bad price either."
9.998.99
Ref: 404
Derek Flack
 Forrest Chardonnay 2011, Marlborough, New Zealand
"New Zealand winemaking is synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Noir. However, the country also ships out a lot of excellent Chardonnay. The cool climate seems to produce
wines with a nervous energy allied to ripeness of fruit that rivals the great Chardonnays of Burgundy.
Forrest Estate’s Chardonnay combines stone fruit flavours with a mealy, biscuity underlay and lively,
crisp minerality. A perfect companion for seafood and poultry dishes."

Jane Boyce MW
 Château Laclaverie 2010, Côtes de Francs, Bordeaux, France
"Before you abandon all hope of finding good quality claret at a reasonable price, try this. It has an excellent pedigree coming from the Thienpont/Derenoncourt stable and is made at Chateau
Puygueraud. It has that wonderful typicity of ripe, spicy fruit and cedar on the nose. On the palate,
it is warm and juicy with good concentration underpinned by yielding tannins and subtle oak. A
very complete red Bordeaux which says a lot about the quality of the 2010 vintage."
10.959.85
Ref: 118
Judith Scott
 Dominio de Tares Baltos 2011, Bierzo, Spain
"The wines from Bierzo are a real contrast to other Spanish reds. The reds are made from the
Mencia grape which is lighter and softer than Tempranillo. Baltos is all too drinkable with
fresh red berry fruits, some savoury, herbal notes and the kind of complexity that makes it
hard to put your glass down."
11.9910.79
Ref: 614
Kristin Collins
 Bellevue Chardonnay 2013, Loire, France
"All too often people are put off by the word Chardonnay. When it is bad, it is very very bad, but
when it is good it is my favourite grape variety. This offering from Domaine Bellevue is a great
example of a well made, affordable Chardonnay. Coming from the cool-climate Loire, this wine
has delightful freshness and minerality, but at its core is that honeyed, citrusy richness that I
enjoy so much. A welcome addition to this year's portfolio."

 Sartarelli Brut Spumante NV, Italy
"This sparkling has been a favourite of mine for a while – made from Verdicchio & aged on the lees, this charming wine is jam-packed with green apple, citrus & pear notes. It’s dry, crisp & refreshing,
making it wine the perfect companion to fresh salads, shellfish & summer sunshine!"
15.0013.50
Ref: 694
Liz Creagh
 Soalheiro Alvarinho 2013, Portugal
"Light, crisp and elegant white made by this superb producer in northern Portugal from Alvarinho,
the same grape as Spain's Albariño, which is made just over the border in Galicia. Fresh, lively and
aromatic with citrus and peach fruit – delicious with grilled fish or just perfect for sipping of a balmy
summer evening."

Maria Elena Lugea
 Amic Clos D’Agon 2010, Spain
"From the sunny slopes of Catalunya in northern Spain, this delightfully ripe and succulent red
wine has become one of my firm favourites. A blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot,
it has juicy fruit reminiscent of raspberries and black cherries, with gentle spice and soft tannins
from the oak ageing. Overall, this is a very likeable, very drinkable wine, but don’t let that soft
juicy fruit fool you – it still packs a punch!"
15.9514.35
Ref: 621
Rachel McKenzie
 Le Pigeoulet des Brunier 2010/11, Rhône, France
"One of my favourites from our great selection of Rhône wines. It’s fresh, rich in red fruit and has
just the right amount of spice on the finish. The handpicked grapes come from vines with an average
age of 25 years, so the wine is packed full of flavour! A great value-for-money bottle of red wine that
drinks like a baby Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe."
12.7511.47
Ref: 366
Thomas Glackin
 Wolftrap White 2013, South Africa
"This is the kind of white I turn to when I want something satisfying and savoury but it’s too warm
for red. It is a full-bodied white with plenty of flavour and a toasty finish and it’s great with food."

Jay Somers and Ernst Loosen met about 10 years ago and quickly realized that they shared a similar taste and passion for Pinot Noir.
Ernst is a lifelong Pinot Noir fanatic and has been producing it at his J.L. Wolf estate since 1996, the same year that Jay launched his own
brand in Oregon. The two cemented their friendship in 2004 when Jay travelled to Germany to help the short-handed harvest crew at Dr.
Loosen. It wasn’t long before they began talking about collaborating to produce Pinot Noir together in Oregon. Their friendship led to a
partnership and in 2010 they began building a winery and planting a vineyard in Newberg, Oregon. The new venture produces wines under
the already-established “J. Christopher” brand. As winemaker for the joint venture, Jay is in charge of all winery operations and vineyard
management. Ernst sees his role as that of a collaborator who both supports the international growth of the brand and broadens the winery’s
exposure to Old World ideas and techniques.

ACHAVAL FERRER
“Does Argentina have a fine wine dimension? That’s a good question. I think I’d answer ‘yes’, and largely because of the amazing wines of
Achaval Ferrer, which, for me, is Argentina’s most impressive producer. I’d tried their wines in London, and been blown away by them, so
I was delighted to be able to visit the winery, even though it was in the rather busy time of vintage.” (Jamie Goode, thewineanorak.com)

with blackberry, graphite, a touch of soy and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannins and

"This wine is a perfect example of the true potential of
Casablanca Valley terroir. A lot of people avoid wines from
Chile but this wine proves them wrong. Rich, deep ruby red
in colour, aromas of red and black fruits, soft tannins and a
velvety texture. Another crowd pleaser!”

Gusbourne
BOTTLEBOTTLE/CASE
We are delighted to add the Gusbourne wines from Kent to our portfolio – award winning sparkling wines with a difference.
Two septuagenarian pickers, Rita Everett and Anne Hathaway, have become a key part of the harvesting team. The pair, who
have since introduced friends and relatives to the annual event, work in a team of eight each autumn, all of whom are around
their age. "It helps with the winter bills," Hathaway says about why they do it.

With a youthful, deep ruby red hue this Pinot Noir is full of the intense red fruit aromas you might find
in an English garden – cherries, raspberries and red currant. This is backed up by creamy vanilla and a
spicy pepper kick. The palate reveals more crisp and fresh flavours of juicy cherry and crunchy pomegranate
supported by a soft and ripe tannic structure.
“It's probably the best English red I have tasted. 16 pts." (Jancis Robinson Purple Pages, 21 Dec 2013)

Jean-Christoffe, the winery’s young winemaker and director is so obviously in his element in the vineyard and his attachment to the land
and his commitment to viticultural integrity are unmistakeable. Biodynamic practices are the rule (the vineyards were converted to organic

ZIND HUMBRECHT
The Zind Humbrecht estate comprises 40 hectares in 5 villages in the Haut-Rhin region of Alsace, including vines in 4 Grand Crus. Riesling
accounts for 40% of plantings with Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris next in prominence. Conversion to organic/biodynamic began in 1998
and the winery gained Ecocert certification in 2000 and Biodyvin in 2002. Olivier explains that biodynamic culture creates more life activity
in the soil allowing it to develop a much better structure through a better humus/mineral mix. This increases erosion resistance, helps to
retain the minerals in the soil and improve drainage. The higher metabolism of the soil guarantees better and more regular nutrition of the
vines. Biodynamic practices also provide all the energy and influences the vines need to stay “in tune” with its environment, making it more
resistant to the major parasites. Olivier believes that his wines must reflect Nature with minimal interference from man.

"Perhaps the best wine I have yet tasted from this estate, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2008 Le Serre exhibits
sweet loamy soil notes intermixed with rich raspberry and black cherry fruit. The wine's red fruit character
is accompanied by a lovely lushness, sweet tannin, and a consumer friendly personality. It should drink
beautifully for 7–8 years." (eRobertParker.com, Apr 2009)

"This vineyard's cooler terroir has come through nicely for proprietor Stephan von Neipperg. Deep ruby colored with purple nuances, the 2003 Clos de l’Oratoire reveals elegant sweet cherry and black currant
fruit along with notions of incense, spice box, and dried herbs. Medium-bodied and round, with good size,
depth, and an attractively textured finish, it should drink well young and keep for 10–12 years. 88–91 pts."

"The minerality and stoniness really comes through on the nose of this Rieussec, more than the 2007. The
palate is very well balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great precision with notes of apricot,
white peach and honey on the beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the astounding 2001.

BEAUJOLAIS
Top wine commentator Jancis Robinson attests to the good value to be got from this region: "Beaujolais is one of the great wine bargains of
the world at the moment. I recently had a chance to taste this wide range of current wines, and a few older vintages, in London and it includes
some real steals." (Jancis Robinson Purple Pages, 11 July 2013)

Loire
This is not a 'great' vintage – earlier flowering was needed to have a chance of that. But even if we'd have liked a little
more concentration, the wines are genuinely pretty and will be ready to drink young. 2013 is a year for nice, easy wines
– even if the vintage was far from 'easy' at the time!

Domaine de Ventenac
About 10 km north of Carcassonne is where this Domaine can be found in the appellation of Cabardès. Nestled in between the mountains
of Central Massif and the Pyrenees, the Domaine wines are clean, simple and fruit driven whereas the Château Ventenac wines are AOC
designated. In order to use AOC Cabardès they have to include at least 40% Bordeaux grape varieties & 40% Mediterranean, giving a more
concentrated and intense style of wine.

"A fantastic estate that covers close to 44 acres throughout the appellation, Domaine Roger Sabon was created by Roger Sabon in 1952. The
estate was taken over by Roger’s sons (Jean-Jacques, Denis & Gilbert) in 1976 and since 2001 the wines are made by Didier Negron who is
Jean-Jacques’ stepson. The estate produces upward of four red Châteauneufs in a given vintage and one white. In addition, they release a solid

"The 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is slightly denser with a deep ruby/plum/purple color
followed by notes of crushed Provencal herbs, framboise, kirsch, licorice, pepper and nori (the seafood
wrapper used in sushi restaurants). Full-bodied with good acidity and a distinct, earthy/underbrush
character, it should drink nicely for at least two decades given the longevity of most top vintages of this wine.

This tiny estate is run by a dedicated, passionate proprietor, Georges Perrot. Georges Perrot and his wife Delphine have 20 hectares of
vines, almost entirely in the Rasteau cru. As is typical around here, they are spread across 25 small parcels on three quite different terroirs:
galets (large, round stones) with red clay; yellow clay; and the famous argile bleu (blue clay) associated with Rasteau's finest wines.
"Although we're not fully organic we're heading in that direction," Georges says. "We haven't used weedkillers in 15 years." (Mary Dowey,

Described by Daniel Brunier as "simply phenomenal", the 2012 Rhone vintage will throw up some fabulous
wines. However, a period of intense cold weather preceded spring and was partly responsible for a shortfall
in availability. Les Pallières is situated in Gigondas, an area that shares many of the unique geological and
topological features of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but whose wines are much more affordable. The 2012 Les
Racines is deep and fresh on the palate with a hint of spice.

Patrizia Felluga's single vineyard and vinified separately before being carefully blended to produce the final
result. The wine is then aged for ten months in French and American oak barrels before bottling. The wine is
bright straw-yellow, shading into pale gold. The characterful nose reveals subtle hints of toastiness and vanilla,
leading into an impressive palate with well-extracted fruit, thanks in part to the late harvested fruit. There are
distinct hints of citrus fruit on both nose and palate. The complex, well-sustained palate is seamless from entry
through to the leisurely finish.

In contrast to 99% of Italy's wineries, Sartarelli grows and makes wine from a single grape variety,
Verdicchio. Balciana is generally regarded as one of Italy's greatest white wines. It is deeper and richer
than most Italian whites and is made only in the best vintages. Yields are very small and the harvest
time varies greatly depending on weather conditions through the course of the year. It is always a lateharvest wine and it bears comparison with some of the great late harvested white wines of Alsace.

The S. Stefanetto remains classy and elegant, with a mid-weight personality that will offer rewarding drinking
for a number of years. Menthol and licorice linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2022. 92 pts."

"The Dog Point philosophy of Pinot Noir is simple: Punch it down twice per day. Take the wine off skins when
you start to get astringency and don't go for a big style. Straightforward as this may be, the 2010 Pinot Noir is
anything but, offering a pale to medium ruby color and fragrant red cherry, violet cinnamon stick and clove
aromas with a suggestion of star anise. Medium-bodied and elegantly fruited in the mouth, it offers plenty of
fruit layers supported by a low to medium level of finely grained tannins, lively acid and a long finish. Approachable
now, it should cellar gracefully to 2017+. 91 pts." (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, eRobertParker.com, Oct 2012)

The Alvarinho grapes used in the Soalheiro winery come from several small vineyards in Melgaço planted in granite soil. The Melgaço region,
the most northerly point of Portugal, is protected by a range of mountains that create the perfect conditions of rainfall, temperature and
sunshine needed to perfectly ripen the Alvarinho grapes. The brand name Soalheiro arises from the excellent solar exposure of the vineyards
bearing the same name – a sunny place.

Bembibre displays aromas of black fruits, spice, floral notes and an earthy minerality. The palate reveals
layers of velvety opulence counterbalanced by an airy freshness. This wine will evolve for 2 to 3 years and
will drink well until at least 2025. All wines produced from Mencia grapes benefit from decanting at least
an hour before drinking. In the words of Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: "Mencia is wild; there's no wine in

Bodegas Paco Garcia
New generation Rioja from Juan Bautista García and Ana Fernández, a young couple who are producing thoroughly modern, fruity,
flavoursome wines with an eye-catching image from a small Rioja winery and 40 hectares of vineyards inherited from Juan Bautista's
parents. Things have started out well for Juan Bautista and Ana. Their wines have won gold medals in international wine tastings and
received top scores in the ABC (Spanish newspaper) Wine Guide which has created tons of interest in the brand. The label is a handprint
of Juan Bautista's father Paco, representing his status as the 'alma pater' and inspiration for the project. The winery's motto is 'vinos que
dejan huella' (wines that make an impression, an allusion to Paco García's handprint).

"Beautifully expressive with vibrant, yeasty aromas. In the mouth this Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
blend is multi-layered and intensely flavoured with freshly baked bread, spiced white peach and tangy
acidity. This is a very engaging and accomplished bottle of sparkling wine. 93 pts." (25 Great Sparkling

Northern Ireland's first craft gin is produced a stone's throw from JN,
at Rademon Estate Distillery by Fiona & David Boyd-Armstrong. The
botanicals are hand picked, the water is drawn from the estate's own
source and distillation proceeds on a small copper still – everything
crafted to perfection by hand. Shortcross is a classical gin. It is smooth
with an exceptionally long aftertaste. Its unique characteristics are
down to the use of fresh apples, elderberries and wild clover which are
distilled with the other botanicals including juniper, coriander, orange
peel, lemon peel and cassia (derived from the cinnamon plant). Give it
a try, gin lovers – you won't regret it.

James Nicholson Wine Merchant I The List 2014 I Retail
Our Shop
“Taste wines with Jim and he
volunteers a story about each and
every one, its background, the
people and places that produced
it. This is a proper questing wine
explorer, someone who travels
continually, rooting around to find
rare gems, rather than buying in
vast vats of bland blends.”
SUSY ATKINS, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH, JANUARY 2013
Whether you are looking for a gift, a
recommendation for a wine to go with a meal,
wines to invest in or some help in expanding
your wine drinking horizons we are here to
help you find something suitable for your
palate and your purse.
On Saturdays you will always find a bottle of
something open to try in our tasting room and
we run tasting evenings and courses throughout
the year for a whole host of reasons, but mostly
because we love it and we know you do too.
Keep an eye on the events page on jnwine.com
