Welcome to the first edition of 380 Lygon Court Magazine.
This magazine will guide you through what makes Lygon Court so
unique; the fashion stores, Borders, the cinema, the health precinct,
La Face and too many other stores to mention here.
On the cover is the beautiful and successful Natalie Bassingthwaighte.
Inside you can discover what she has to say. You’ll learn more about
the men and women who make this centre so special from store
owners to the people who work in them.
LaFace has now become my beauty salon of choice and I thank the
girls for updating my brows. They really gave me a lift. It was also
enlightening to discover how many natural beauty products are
in the market place and how much variety is available within
Lygon Court.

Confessions of a Shop Assistant
When researching women’s health, I was pleasantly surprised to find
Carlton’s newest health precinct located on the upper floor. Dianne
Elderfield from Metropolitan Medical Centres was a great resource for
information on what women should know over the decades. After recently
reaching a milestone birthday I have already made use of this information
and hope you do too.

BRIGHT
STAR: NATALIE
BASSINGTHWAIGHTE
Glamorous star Natalie Bassingthwaighte is well known for her role as Izzy Hoyland on
television soap Neighbours and as the former lead singer of the band Rogue Traders.
T
oday the 33 year old can add
co-author of Sistahood! A
Journal of Self-Discovery,
two seasons as the host of
So You Think You Can Dance, the
lead role in recently released movie
Prey and her Number One, charttopping solo album 1000 Stars to
her list of achievements. It would
not be out of place to say her star is
truly shining brightly right now.
Q & A with Natalie Bassingthwaighte
1
How would you describe yourself ?
I’m like a jigsaw puzzle. I have
different influences and I have
different moods but in the end
it is exactly who I am. For the
first time I have been able to fully
express myself creatively. I’ve had
so many amazing experiences in
my career. I’ve been punky with
the Rogue Traders and more
sophisticated as a TV host and
I’ve played characters on stage
and TV and had so many costumes
and outfits. The album 1000 Stars
is so me as it allowed me to strip
back all that and just be the
real me.
2
What do you do to relax?
Anyone who knows me says I
never relax – I’ve been called the
energizer bunny! I’m always busy
and I love being busy. But if I ever
have a day off I love to get the full
works done – manicure, pedicure,
facial, massage. It takes the whole
shebang to revitalize me from the
zombie state I usually arrive in.
3
Are you a singer or actor?
I’m still trying to figure out
what I am. Singer, dancer, actor. I
guess I’m still the same little girl
playing dress-ups. I think I write
entertainer (as a profession) and it
often feels like people think I’m
a stripper. I kind of think I’m like
a bag of mixed lollies.
4
Do you think of yourself
as a dreamer?
I’m kind of a dreamer and
I like to have these ridiculous,
adventurous fantasies. The second
single Someday Soon is about
having a dream and following it.
Yes, there’s hard work and times
of wanting to throw it all in,
but in the end it’s a moment of
realizing life can be more amazing
and more beautiful than you can
ever imagine if you allow it to be.
Maybe I’m a dreamer at heart!
7And your good habits are?
I always like to pamper myself.
I live in the salon and every time
someone rings me I’m there getting
my nails done or a facial.
8Any bad habits?
I am a chocolate head. One minute
I’ll be healthy and the next I’ll be
looking at the cakes. I get jealous
of people working in chocolate
shops who get to eat chocolates
whenever they want. It’s not fair.
6
What makes you mad?
I have zero tolerance for
incompetence. There’s nothing
worse than when someone does
a lousy job at something and they
just don’t seem to care. It totally
frustrates me!
9
What is the significance of the
star on your wrist?
When I was making the album
I felt like I was surrounded
by stars. Every day I asked if
the stars were aligning and if
everything was coming together
okay and they were. There are
two songs about stars. One
is about falling in love which
ended up being the album
title and there’s a song about
granddad who’s passed away
and how he is the brightest star
in the sky. I had the star tattooed
on my wrist in L.A just as the
album was completed. Every
time I look at it, I can touch it
or make a wish and it reminds
me of my granddad and the
achievement
of this album.
10What’s next?
If I could pick a few things
I would like to do I’d play a
superhero in a movie, maybe
a cartoon character’s voice and
tour the world.
5
Do you collect anything?
I’m envious of Imelda Marcos’
shoe collection. I have about 60
pairs but I can always make room
for more! And the sad thing is
I bought most of them.
“I’m like a jigsaw puzzle.
I have different influences
and I have different moods
but in the end it is exactly
who I am.”

Eunice Holden
reveals her
shopping habits.
I used to buy what ever I fancied. But
today my shopping habits are different
to what they used to be and I’m much
more careful with my money. I buy
classic pieces, with an edge, that will
last and won’t date by the end of
the season. I guess that’s why I like
working for Ojay because that’s
their style.
I definitely know what I want most
of the time. I have a certain style and
know what works for me by hiding the
bits I want to and wearing clothes that
do my body shape justice.
My guilty
pleasures are
shoes and lingerie.
I spend a lot of money
on lingerie. I love beautiful
pieces by Chantal Thomass and
Sally Jones.
The orange shoes are by Versace.
They were an extravagant gift
to myself, in celebration
of moving to Melbourne.
I wanted a cream coat with a hood.
It took me months but I eventually
found what I was looking for - by
Alannah Hill.
I always wanted to do fashion design
so, at 40, I did a Diploma in Fashion
Design. I was quite good and won
awards. It has given me so much more
knowledge for working in fashion
sales. I know a lot about the product,
fabric and construction. It proves that
if you are passionate about something,
you can do it. I’m just passionate
about what I do!

If anyone knows how to please
a crowd, it’s Bill Granger, the man
behind the landmark Bill’s restaurants.
Bill’s food is fresh, simple, healthy
and delicious - it’s food for people
who love to eat but are short of time
to cook, people with too much to do
to fuss in the kitchen and at the table,
people with families and friends to
feed, people just like you.
Tim Winton has again delivered
a masterpiece with Breath, a nostalgic
yet brutal look at growing up and the
intoxicating rush that comes with
taking risks in a small West Australian
coastal town. Breath is one of 10
Australian novels in the running
for the prestigious Miles Franklin
Literary Award.
In this collection of three of her
best-selling novels – Pants on Fire,
Mad about the Boy, and Handbags
and Gladrags – Maggie Alderson
dishes up romance, humor and
adventure.
The book is divided into quick
reference chapters so you can find the
meals which best suit you - new ideas
for breakfasts, lunches and dinners;
food for two, food for more, meals

The
Trinny and
Susannah
of Carlton
Interview / 380 Magazine / 021
Surprisingly, some
clients still don’t
know we are
identical twins...
Black Orange Story – Twins Nicole Nason and Martine Flouch-Scott
S
tylish twin sisters Nicole
Nason and Martine FlouchScott have been dressing
women around Carlton and
Melbourne at their Black Orange
boutique for the past 15 years. They
are warmly referred to as the Trinny
and Susannah of Carlton, because
they know how to make their clients
look and feel good.
At the age of 25 they followed their
father’s advice and bought their own
business – Black Orange.
The twins, yes they are identical but
you have to look hard because, while
they seem to have similar tastes in
clothing, each sister is quite different
in style; for one, they wear their hair
differently. But like most twins, they
have an uncanny way of knowing
what the other is about to say.
They still work hard and have
managed, to their merit, to retain
the same staff for nine years. This
has allowed them to juggle work and
parenthood for themselves and their
staff. “We’re like a big family with an
understanding of kids and what that
means,” says Flouch-Scott.
“Surprisingly, some clients still don’t
know we are identical twins until
they see or read something about
us,” says Nason. “I have to warn new
clients because if they come into the
store and Martine is working that day
and hasn’t previously met them, they
wonder why they are being ignored.”
Black Orange boutique today is a
niche business catering to the higher
end. Their big-spending clients like to
shop twice a year, rather then every
week, as they are often time poor.
“We offer a personalised service. Our
clients make an appointment and then
we put together their wardrobe for
the season. We do it all - right down
to the boots and sunnies so they are
ready to go. We are all about service,”
says Nason.
Born into retail, the fashion business
runs through their blood. Growing up
their father had fashion sample shops
all over Australia. The girls helped
out from an early age and later gained
more experience working for Covers
and the department store Georges.
Self-confessed workaholics, the sisters
originally worked seven days a week
ploughing everything back into the
business to create a perfect shopping
environment that combined the right
look and labels with great service.
Wardrobing makes up a big part of the
business now for the sisters with their
reputation as the Trinny and Susannah
of Carlton spreading. “Our wardrobe
side of the business is expanding as
we now have husbands booking their
wives in for a consultation and makeover,” says Nason.
Over the last 15 years, the sisters have
seen a lot of designers come and go
and while some labels they stocked
in the past are still going strong, their
buying habits have changed to include
fresh labels from younger designers.
They admit to being ruthless with
designers: “We change our labels so
we are never boring and get rid of
labels that don’t do well. We used to
stock labels such as Thommy, Prue
Acton, George Gross and Harry Who
to name a few. The look then was
all about the poplin jacket with big
buttons, nicked-in waists, mini skirts
and big earrings,” says Flouch-Scott.
Fast forward to today and they are
no longer stocking those labels, but
they do carry Tiffany Trelor - Prue
Acton’s daughter. They also stock Lisa
Ho, Mela Perdie, Anna Rita and a few
New Zealand labels including Trelise
Cooper.
Fashion style today is not as pigeonholed as it has been in the past; there
is a much broader choice. The looks
from individual designers are quite
unique, especially the ranges from
New Zealand designers.
“New Zealand designers have a real
point of difference. They stand out,
are well made and offer quality for
the price. They are often edgy, more
like a piece of art and so unusual that
you often receive comments when you
wear something by a New Zealand
designer,” says Nason.
The sisters admit to being very honest
with each other about what they wear.
“If I don’t like something Nicole wears
I tell her to go and change; or if I like
something I’ll often get Nicole to try
it on first,” says Flouch- Scott.
With Nason concentrating on clients
and the staff and Flouch-Scott doing
most of the buying, the sisters have
proved that you can mix family and
business or, as Flouch-Scott says,
“Maybe it’s a twin thing”. Whatever
it is, even in this economic climate,
they seem to be doing it the right way.

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard
brings to the screen writer Peter
Morgan’s (The Queen, Last King
of Scotland) electrifying battle
between Richard Nixon, the disgraced
president with a legacy to save, and
David Frost, a jet-setting television
personality with a name to make,
in the untold story of the historic
encounter that changed both: Frost/
Nixon. Over the course of their
encounter, each man would reveal
his own insecurities, ego and reserves
of dignity - ultimately setting aside
posturing in a stunning display of
unvarnished truth.
Reprising their roles from Morgan’s
stage play are Frank Langella, who
won a Tony for his portrayal of Nixon,
and Michael Sheen, who originally
played the part of Frost onstage in
London and New York.
What does it take to find a lost love?
Bella Swan has always been a little bit
different, never caring about fitting in
with the trendy girls at her Phoenix
high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with
her father in the rainy little town
of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t
expect much of anything to change.
Then she meets the mysterious and
dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen, a
boy unlike any she’s ever met. Edward
is a vampire, but he doesn’t have fangs
and his family is unique in that they
choose not to drink human blood.
Intelligent and witty, Edward sees
straight into Bella’s soul.
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of
Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan
from the slums of Mumbai, who is
about to experience the biggest day
of his life. With the whole nation
watching, he is just one question away
from winning a staggering 20 million
rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be
A Millionaire?”
But when the show breaks for the
night, police arrest him on suspicion
of cheating; how could a street kid
know so much? Desperate to prove
his innocence, Jamal tells the story of
his life in the slum where he and his
brother grew up, of their adventures
together on the road, of vicious
encounters with local gangs, and of
Latika, the girl he loved and lost.
Each chapter of his story reveals the
key to the answer to one of the game
show’s questions. Intrigued by Jamal’s
story, the jaded Police Inspector
begins to wonder what a young man
with no apparent desire for riches
is really doing on this game show?
When the new day dawns and Jamal
returns to answer the final question,
the Inspector and 60 million viewers
are about to find out…
Soon, they are swept up in a
passionate, thrilling and unorthodox
romance. To Edward, Bella is what he
has waited 90 years for, a soul mate.
But what will Edward and Bella do
when a clan of new vampires, James,
Laurent and Victoria, come to town
and threaten to disrupt their way of
life?

Quiet Nights
Diana Krall

Bare Bones
Madeleine Peyroux
Borders Price $19.95
White Lies for Dark Times
Ben Harper and Relentless7
Borders Price $21.95
Diana Krall weaves together a
sensuous blend of ballads and bossa
novas for her new album Quiet Nights.
The third album in four years from
song interpreter extraordinaire
Madeleine Peyroux, Bare Bones is both
an extension of the currents of 2004’s
Careless Love and 2006’s ‘Half the
Perfect World’ and a bold step into
previously unexplored psychological
terrain.
With Ben Harper and Relentless7,
the story of modern rock music is
now being rewritten. This album is a
timeless rock record, with a cohesive
collection of music that is raw,
unrelenting and thunderous, as it is
arrestingly haunting and emotional.
The romantic album combines
Brazilian and west coast jazz styles
and features three recordings of songs
by bossa nova legend Antonio Carlos
Jobim. Quiet Nights reunites Krall
with arranger Claus Ogerman for the
first time since the multi-platinum
selling 2001 album The Look of Love.
“It’s not coy. It’s not ‘Peel me a grape,’
little girl stuff. I feel this album’s very
womanly – like you’re lying next to
your lover in bed whispering this in
their ear,” Krall says.

Produced, like its two predecessors, by
Larry Klein, this fluid and enthralling
new work is Peyroux’s most personal
yet, hardly surprising considering she
had a hand in writing each of the 11
songs, marking the fulfillment of a
lifelong dream.
On the raucous opening track,
Number With No Nmae, Harper
bellows “the very thing that drives
you - can drive you insane” over an
infectious guitar line and a deftly
serious groove that both thumps and
propels the listener. Songs such as
Shimmer and Shine and Up To You
Now, are surely soon to be familiar
staples on radio.

ROSS MADDEN TALKS DESIGN
Ross Madden is a man with an eye for fine, practical
design. He is also the man responsible for bringing Alessi
products to our shores and into our homes years ago.
“We are the oldest retailer for Alessi” says Madden, the
man behind the highly successful RG Madden design
stores.
RG Madden stores today still carry the highly sort-after
Italian brand Alessi; known for it’s innovative and creative
designs by the world’s foremost architects and designers.
From the Alessi collections he prefers the formal range in
stainless steel and steers away from the funky coloured
plastic designs. “I’m not interested in plastic, funky stuff”
says Madden. The piece he likes at the moment is the
Resonance bowl by designer Abi Alice, who just happens
to be an Australian.
Madden actually played a small role in Alberto Alessi and
Abi Alice meeting. Madden brought Alberto Alessi to
Australia in 1995 to lecture at Swinburne University of
Technology and the University of NSW. Alessi met the
then 19-year-old student Abi Alice in NSW at the university
and liked her work. The two struck up a friendship and
kept in contact. That meeting came to fruition years later
when she designed the Resonance bowl for Alessi, which
happens to have been the biggest seller in Europe for the
past two years.
“I’m really pleased we were instrumental in the producer
meeting the artist,” says Madden. “She had the talent and
he had the eye and 12 years down the track it all came to
fruition. I’m proud to sell the product.”

WOMEN’S
HEALTH
The medical tests you should know about
for each decade
Every woman needs to be aware that she is responsible for her own health and take the necessary steps
to maintain her personal well-being throughout her life. Each decade brings changes to the body and new
insights into what needs to be done to keep the body at its optimal functioning level and lessen the need for
medical dependence in senior years.
TEENS
This is an experimental age where
drinking, smoking and sexual activity
can be a concern. What a teen does
now lays the foundation for her health
in later years. Teen ignorance can lead
to teen pregnancies and STDs that
can cause infertility. HPV vaccination
is available and free, for girls aged
between 12 and 27 years, from the
Federal Government until June 2009.
This vaccination helps guard against
cervical cancer.
KEY TESTS: Pap test, STI swab test,
pelvic examination
WHEN: Every two years
BY: Your GP or Gynecologist
20s
As you enter the twenties you can
find yourself burning the candle
at both ends and overlooking your
health, unless symptoms appear.
For early detection or to prevent
illnesses there are simple checks you
can make, because this is the decade
for you to become aware of your
own body changes. Give your breasts
a monthly examination and check
moles regularly. You should also
consider having your eyes tested if you
are required to look at a computer
screen or do other “near” tasks daily.
Symptoms that can develop from this
type of work are dry eyes, headaches,
eye fatigue and problems with focus.
Poor diet, through the desire to be
thin, can lead to low iron levels and
tiredness.
KEY TESTS: Iron levels, skin and
breast examination, eye tests
WHEN: Iron levels if feeling run
down. Skin and breast test once a year
with your doctor. Eyes every two years
unless advised differently
BY: GP, Optometrist
30s
The thirties is the decade when you
often find yourself juggling work and
an active social life along with the
start of motherhood. With very little
“me” time, women can find themselves
feeling just under par but not unwell
enough to visit a doctor. Apart from
all the tests mentioned above, that you
need to follow up on, you should also
get blood tests to check sugar levels,
vitamin D and cholesterol levels. High
sugar levels are a risk for diabetes and
low vitamin D levels can lead to an
increased risk of heart disease and
cancer. High cholesterol levels can put
you at risk of a heart attack or stroke.
If overweight, weepy and tired it is
also a good idea to test the thyroid
function. If there is family history
of cardiovascular disease then get to
know your blood pressure readings.
KEY TESTS: Blood tests for all
the above
WHEN: Once a year
BY: GP

40s
The 40s or family years are often
when you feel really confident in
yourself, but also get stressed to
the maximum because of everyday
family issues. Toward the end of this
decade you could be pre-menopausal,
which can lead to a time of emotional
and physical change. If you are
experiencing unusual mood swings,
and changes to your menstrual cycle
you should consult your GP. You
should have regular pap tests and
blood tests for diabetes, vitamin D and
cholesterol. And add mammograms,
unless there is a family history of
breast cancer - then you should start
them earlier.
KEY TESTS: Mammogram, blood
tests to check hormones and all the
above
WHEN: Mammogram, every two
years unless advised differently
BY: Radiologist, GP
50s
If you are turning 50 or 55 before the
end of 2010 the Federal Government
will send out a free FOBT test
(faecal occult blood test) to screen
for bowl cancer; this can be done in
the privacy of your home. Even if the
test comes back negative for blood
it is recommended that you have a
colonoscopy every five years once you
enter this decade. A bone-density scan
in this decade can give you enough
time to improve your diet and start
exercising if bone loss is indicated.
Diet and exercise are vital in the
fifties as you deal with the onset of
menopause and general aging of the
body.
Treatment Talk / 380 Magazine / 043
60+
Women can lose calcium from as
early as their thirties. If you maintain
a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet
and regular exercise, have no family
history of osteoporosis and you are
not taking medication for your thyroid
then a bone density scan may not be
necessary until you turn 60. In this
decade arthritis usually sets in, joints
can ache and the body stiffens up.
Blood pressure and cholesterol levels
can rise so a healthy diet is essential.
Walking and hydrotherapy are
excellent ways to reduce joint pain and
lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
KEY TEST: Bone density scan,
cholesterol and blood pressure checks
WHEN: Every year unless advised
differently, bone density two to five
years depending on results
BY: Trained operators (GP referral
needed for bone density)
AT Any Age:
Waist measurement should be
90cm or less.
It is important to note that no two individuals are the
same when it comes to genetics and general health and
the above information is to be used as a general guide to
the decades and the changes they may bring.
TREATMENT
TALK
It’s all about the brow
From skinny to bushy,
the shape of brows tells
a story that reflects
fashion trends, culture
and even politics.
If you think back to the sixties when
fashion, culture and love were freeflowing, brows were left unplucked.
Actress Brooke Shields’ natural
unshaped eyebrows in the film The
Blue Lagoon became the much
talked about norm for brows.
By the eighties eyebrows had thinned
again with hairs being plucked to
just a few in a thin line. That decade
represented the power suit, self
obsession and greed was good.
KEY TEST: Colonoscopy, bone
density scan
WHEN: Every two to five years
depending on results
BY: Gastroenterologist, trained
operators (need GP referral)
By the new millennium the style was
for high arched, perfectly shaped
brows. Fashion designer labels,
glamour and celebrity status were
to be desired and having it all, the
expectation.
Metropolitan Medical Centre offers
“Women are very good at putting everyone else’s needs in front of their own. However,
there are times in a women’s life when she needs to put herself first. Regular visits to a
women’s health clinic will help support a woman through all her various stages in life”
says Dianne Elderfield from Metropolitan Medical Centres Carlton.
Today, it can be said, the mood is
one of caring and sharing and being
green so eyebrows - you guessed it
- are getting bigger again. And we’re
turning to fashion, beauty and politics
with a conscious.
Eyebrows with a fuller shape are
back in fashion agrees Renata
Sgambati owner of La Face Beauty
Clinic. “Full eyebrows are in fashion
and look great. It’s going back to what
you had when you were younger,”
says Sgambati.
“There is more emphasis on a darker
brow, even for women with blonde
hair, so we do a lot of tinting. We use
a vegetable dye that lasts 4 – 6 weeks
depending on the client.
“My more mature clients want a
natural shape but many over-plucked
in the seventies and a lot of them, in
that age bracket, are now going grey.
So I suggest, to my clients, that we
tint the hairs that are there and teach
them how to maintain them. It is
wrong to pluck grey hair as it leaves
patches and doesn’t grow back.” says
Sgambati.
Sgambati recommends having an
eyebrow-shape consultation if your
brows are not looking the way you
wish they were. The shape of the
eyebrow is very important as it can
change the face.
“Having your eyebrows shaped lifts
the eyebrow, which helps if the eye
is droopy. The more shape definition
to the eye area the less makeup is
needed,” says Sgambati.

needs contact the team at La Face
Beauty Clinic on 9349 2116, Level 1,

From the filmmaking genius that
brought us such modern cinema
classics as Being John Malkovich and
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless
Mind comes an all-star comedy that
breaks new existential ground.
Following the huge success of the first
three New York Metropolitan Opera
live in HD seasons, Cinema Nova is
proud to announce that The Met’s
2009/2010 season is the best yet!
Commencing the season with
Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca on October
24, the new season features such
classic operas as Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida,
Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Richard
Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier as well as
another Puccini favourite, Turandot.
Lavishly staged and starring the finest
performers from the international
opera arena, The Met also plays host
to guest directors (including film
directors Anthony Minghella, Julie
Taymor and Robert Lepage) and
artists (designer Issac Mizrahi) who
ensure that these productions, once
experienced, are never forgotten.
Based on the best-selling book
Gomorra by Roberto Saviano,
director Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah
is a riveting expose of the modern
Neapolitan underworld.
Five intersecting storylines illustrate
the breadth of an Italian family’s
control as deals are done to traffic
drugs, create high-end fashion fakes,
move toxic waste and keep people
quiet. An ensemble cast of all ages
shows the ability of the underworld
to entice and consume individuals: a
young boy looks to support his family
through illegal means, two teens are
seduced by the glamour and danger,
and people from all levels of society
seek to improve their means through
a criminal connection.
Shot with a fast-moving camera that
moves amongst the action in the
Italian suburbs of Scampia, Garrone’s
film creates a fascinating insight into
a world where both power and life
can be short-lived.
Synecdoche New York is the directorial
debut of Oscar-winning writer
Charlie Kaufman. Conceivably semiautobiographical, Kaufman’s film
centres on writer and local theatre
director Caden Cotard (Philip
Seymour Hoffman), a frustrated
artist whose wife (Katherine Keener)
is succeeding in the creative field far
more successfully than he. Following
a well-reviewed staging of Death of a
Salesmen, Cotard receives a grant to
create his own original work. Wanting
to make his mark, he sets out to create
a thoroughly fresh theatre piece that
re-enacts life on an increasingly grand
scale.
Featuring the talents of Emily Watson,
Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams,
Hope Davis, Jennifer Jason Leigh and
Diane Wiest, Synecdoche, New York is
brilliantly inventive cinema.

My wardrobe consists of mainly all black clothing and I
don’t know how to change it. Every time I go to purchase
something new I come home with another black piece.
How can I remedy this?
To expand your black wardrobe and include colour it’s best to begin
with baby steps and add colour through your accessories. Buy the
latest bag, scarf, jewellery or shoes finished with a splash of colour.
Then you can become more daring and add a print or coloured shirt
or knit to your black bottoms. Start with the neutral shades and as
you become more confident add the new colour of the season.
This way you can update your wardrobe for the new season very
easily, while still wearing the basic black that you love.

I‘m in my late forties and feel frumpy and dated. How do I
easily update my look?
My guess is that you have probably been doing your hair and
makeup the same way for over 20 years and have been wearing
the same safe look as well.
There are a few ways you can approach this. You can go for broke
and put aside an amount of money you can afford to spend. Then
enquire what stores do wardrobing and put your faith in the sales
assistant to put together a new look for you. Next you can visit a
beauty clinic for advice on your makeup and brows. This updates
your look very quickly. And then if you are brave enough, book an
appointment at the hairdresser’s for a consultation. If you are not
prepared to change your hair at least look at your face and see how
you can change your eye shadow or brow shape and colour to give
your face a fresh look.
Or you can choose the tortoise approach. Look at your
undergarments and update them. You will be amazed at how
good you feel when you improve your body shape. Wearing the
correct bra size and shape will change the fit and drape of your
clothes. Next, read as many fashion magazines as you can so
you understand your body shape better.

consider having your eyes tested if you
are required to look at a computer
screen or do other “near” tasks daily.
Symptoms that can develop from this
type of work are dry eyes, headaches,
eye fatigue and problems with focus.
Poor diet, through the desire to be
thin, can lead to low iron levels and
tiredness.
KEY TESTS: Iron levels, skin and
breast examination, eye tests
WHEN: Iron levels if feeling run
down. Skin and breast test once a year
with your doctor. Eyes every two years
unless advised differently

30s
The thirties is the decade when you
often find yourself juggling work and
an active social life along with the
start of motherhood. With very little
“me” time, women can find themselves
feeling just under par but not unwell
enough to visit a doctor. Apart from
all the tests mentioned above, that you
need to follow up on, you should also
get blood tests to check sugar levels,
vitamin D and cholesterol levels. High
sugar levels are a risk for diabetes and
low vitamin D levels can lead to an
increased risk of heart disease and
cancer. High cholesterol levels can put
you at risk of a heart attack or stroke.
If overweight, weepy and tired it is
also a good idea to test the thyroid
function. If there is family history
of cardiovascular disease then get to
know your blood pressure readings.
KEY TESTS: Blood tests for all
the above
WHEN: Once a year

40s
The 40s or family years are often
when you feel really confident in
yourself, but also get stressed to
the maximum because of everyday
family issues. Toward the end of this
decade you could be pre-menopausal,
which can lead to a time of emotional
and physical change. If you are
experiencing unusual mood swings,
and changes to your menstrual cycle
you should consult your GP. You
should have regular pap tests and
blood tests for diabetes, vitamin D and
cholesterol. And add mammograms,
unless there is a family history of
breast cancer - then you should start
them earlier.
KEY TESTS: Mammogram, blood
tests to check hormones and all the
above
WHEN: Mammogram, every two
years unless advised differently
BY: Radiologist, GP
50s
If you are turning 50 or 55 before the
end of 2010 the Federal Government
will send out a free FOBT test
(faecal occult blood test) to screen
for bowl cancer; this can be done in
the privacy of your home. Even if the
test comes back negative for blood
it is recommended that you have a
colonoscopy every five years once you
enter this decade. A bone-density scan
in this decade can give you enough
time to improve your diet and start
exercising if bone loss is indicated.
Diet and exercise are vital in the
fifties as you deal with the onset of
menopause and general aging of the
body.

60+
Women can lose calcium from as
early as their thirties. If you maintain
a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet
and regular exercise, have no family
history of osteoporosis and you are
not taking medication for your thyroid
then a bone density scan may not be
necessary until you turn 60. In this
decade arthritis usually sets in, joints
can ache and the body stiffens up.
Blood pressure and cholesterol levels
can rise so a healthy diet is essential.
Walking and hydrotherapy are
excellent ways to reduce joint pain and
lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
KEY TEST: Bone density scan,
cholesterol and blood pressure checks
WHEN: Every year unless advised
differently, bone density two to five
years depending on results
BY: Trained operators (GP referral
needed for bone density)
AT Any Age:
Waist measurement should be
90cm or less.
It is important to note that no two individuals are the
same when it comes to genetics and general health and
the above information is to be used as a general guide to
the decades and the changes they may bring.

TALK
It’s all about the brow
From skinny to bushy,
the shape of brows tells
a story that reflects
fashion trends, culture
and even politics.
If you think back to the sixties when
fashion, culture and love were freeflowing, brows were left unplucked.
Actress Brooke Shields’ natural
unshaped eyebrows in the film The
Blue Lagoon became the much
talked about norm for brows.
By the eighties eyebrows had thinned
again with hairs being plucked to
just a few in a thin line. That decade
represented the power suit, self
obsession and greed was good.
KEY TEST: Colonoscopy, bone
density scan
WHEN: Every two to five years
depending on results
BY: Gastroenterologist, trained
operators (need GP referral)
By the new millennium the style was
for high arched, perfectly shaped
brows. Fashion designer labels,
glamour and celebrity status were
to be desired and having it all, the
expectation.
Metropolitan Medical Centre offers
“Women are very good at putting everyone else’s needs in front of their own. However,
there are times in a women’s life when she needs to put herself first. Regular visits to a
women’s health clinic will help support a woman through all her various stages in life”
says Dianne Elderfield from Metropolitan Medical Centres Carlton.
Today, it can be said, the mood is
one of caring and sharing and being
green so eyebrows - you guessed it
- are getting bigger again. And we’re
turning to fashion, beauty and politics
with a conscious.
Eyebrows with a fuller shape are
back in fashion agrees Renata
Sgambati owner of La Face Beauty
Clinic. “Full eyebrows are in fashion
and look great. It’s going back to what
you had when you were younger,”
says Sgambati.
“There is more emphasis on a darker
brow, even for women with blonde
hair, so we do a lot of tinting. We use
a vegetable dye that lasts 4 – 6 weeks
depending on the client.
“My more mature clients want a
natural shape but many over-plucked
in the seventies and a lot of them, in
that age bracket, are now going grey.
So I suggest, to my clients, that we
tint the hairs that are there and teach
them how to maintain them. It is
wrong to pluck grey hair as it leaves
patches and doesn’t grow back.” says
Sgambati.
Sgambati recommends having an
eyebrow-shape consultation if your
brows are not looking the way you
wish they were. The shape of the
eyebrow is very important as it can
change the face.
“Having your eyebrows shaped lifts
the eyebrow, which helps if the eye
is droopy. The more shape definition
to the eye area the less makeup is
needed,” says Sgambati.

From the filmmaking genius that
brought us such modern cinema
classics as Being John Malkovich and
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless
Mind comes an all-star comedy that
breaks new existential ground.
Following the huge success of the first
three New York Metropolitan Opera
live in HD seasons, Cinema Nova is
proud to announce that The Met’s
2009/2010 season is the best yet!
Commencing the season with
Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca on October
24, the new season features such
classic operas as Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida,
Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Richard
Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier as well as
another Puccini favourite, Turandot.
Lavishly staged and starring the finest
performers from the international
opera arena, The Met also plays host
to guest directors (including film
directors Anthony Minghella, Julie
Taymor and Robert Lepage) and
artists (designer Issac Mizrahi) who
ensure that these productions, once
experienced, are never forgotten.
Based on the best-selling book
Gomorra by Roberto Saviano,
director Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah
is a riveting expose of the modern
Neapolitan underworld.
Five intersecting storylines illustrate
the breadth of an Italian family’s
control as deals are done to traffic
drugs, create high-end fashion fakes,
move toxic waste and keep people
quiet. An ensemble cast of all ages
shows the ability of the underworld
to entice and consume individuals: a
young boy looks to support his family
through illegal means, two teens are
seduced by the glamour and danger,
and people from all levels of society
seek to improve their means through
a criminal connection.
Shot with a fast-moving camera that
moves amongst the action in the
Italian suburbs of Scampia, Garrone’s
film creates a fascinating insight into
a world where both power and life
can be short-lived.
Synecdoche New York is the directorial
debut of Oscar-winning writer
Charlie Kaufman. Conceivably semiautobiographical, Kaufman’s film
centres on writer and local theatre
director Caden Cotard (Philip
Seymour Hoffman), a frustrated
artist whose wife (Katherine Keener)
is succeeding in the creative field far
more successfully than he. Following
a well-reviewed staging of Death of a
Salesmen, Cotard receives a grant to
create his own original work. Wanting
to make his mark, he sets out to create
a thoroughly fresh theatre piece that
re-enacts life on an increasingly grand
scale.
Featuring the talents of Emily Watson,
Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams,
Hope Davis, Jennifer Jason Leigh and
Diane Wiest, Synecdoche, New York is
brilliantly inventive cinema.

It sounds like you have a fashion editor’s wardrobe! Most people
look good in black as it is slimming and very versatile. It can take
