ABBEY WORSHIP
A model has truly made it in the world of international modelling when she is only reported by her first
name. Meet Melbourne girl Abbey Lee Kershaw, known on the international scene simply as … Abbey Lee.
M
elbourne born Abbey Lee is one
of the most in-demand models
in the world with a perfume
contract and ad campaigns, but
she can hardly be described as the “girl next
door” – nor is she shy of controversy.
“He puts you in a pile of mud because you
want to do it,” she explains. “You touch
yourself because you want to. For me, that
shoot was the truth about how things were
between us both and I felt good doing it. I’m
not ashamed of it – why should I be?”
The daughter of former AFL footballer Kim
Kershaw, Abbey Lee grew up in Clifton
Hill and describes her time at Clifton
Hill Primary School as a culturally diverse
experience with more than 40 different
nationalities attending the school. She then
attended Melbourne secondary college, the
Academy of Mary Immaculate.
Modelling life is treating Abbey Lee well.
She is No.10 on the Top 50 Models Women
list by models.com, topping best friend and
fellow Australian model Catherine McNeil in
14th place. It looks like 2010 will be the year
of Abbey Lee Kershaw.
“I grew up in a culturally diverse area in
Melbourne,” Abbey Lee says.
The tall, lanky Abbey Lee was discovered
aged 16 after winning the 2004 Girlfriend
Covergirl Model search competition. She
was signed to Chic Management and moved
to Sydney not long after. Overseas soon
beckoned and Abby Lee made the move to
New York in 2007. Three years after being
discovered, she was appearing in European
ad campaigns and strutting the international
runway for major players including Gucci,
McQueen, Balmain, Chanel and Victoria’s
Secret.
Her first big job was appearing beside Lauren
Hutton (whom she is similar to in appearance
due to the gap in her front teeth) in a Lord &
Taylor Spring ad campaign in 2008. In that
same year her career began to skyrocket after
being chosen for the Gucci ‘Flora’ perfume
campaign, shot in Latvia by photographers
Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
Apart from dominating the runway with
opening or closing shows, she has appeared
on several covers of magazines and editorial
spreads in what is a relatively short career
to date. Most recently she was on the covers
of Australian and Russian Vogue in March
2010.
Abbey Lee tends not to shy away from
controversy and has recently appeared topless
in the 2010 Pirelli calendar. Late last year
she posed for a series of provocative shots
by photographer Greg Kadel for US Muse.
But it was her sex-inspired shoot for Purple
magazine with model Freja Beha Erichsen, by
photographer Terry Richardson, that raised a
few eyebrows. But Abbey Lee says she didn’t
do anything she didn’t want to do.

ABOUT ABBEY LEE
Abbey Lee is a Gemini, born June
12, 1987. She stands 180cm tall and
doesn’t diet. “I try to do things that
make me feel good. I go to yoga
classes, drink lots of water, eat
healthily and keep things like
alcohol and coffee to weekends.
I don’t overdo anything.”
She was quite sick as a child.
“When I was four I had meningitis
and had two spinal taps. I was always
in hospital as a kid: I had a tumour
on my knee and lots of broken
bones. I loved climbing trees.”
It’s reported that she has between
8 to 10 tattoos and a nose and
nipple piercing, even though she has
said she is scared of needles. “I’ve got
one on the palm of my hand, a peace
sign on my finger, a little owl, and
two new ones on the side of my
stomach. I had them done in white
ink so I can still model, it means
they are invisible.”
She’ll try anything. “I’ve got
no sense of shame that I’m
always willing to give things
a go. I’ve ridden horses naked
into the sea, I’ve climbed
rocks, all kinds of things. That’s
why I do this job. I’m always
looking for the next door
to open.”

She is inspired by Lauren Hutton.
“I met her on my first job that I did in
New York and she was the most
incredible woman I’ve ever met. She
is extremely vibrant and young at
heart and really inspirational.”
High heels are not her friend.
She has tumbled off her high heels
at the Rodarte show in New York
2008. During Paris Fashion Week,
Abbey Lee fainted at the Alexander
McQueen Spring/Summer 2009
Runway. It was put down to the tight
corset she wore and the high
heels. And recently she was dropped
from Alexander McQueen’s 2010
Spring show in New York for refusing
to wear his lobster claw-inspired
shoes with curved 25cm heels because
she considered them dangerous.
She’s very down to earth and is
known for her bohemian style. She
likes to shop at The Salvation Army,
listen to live bands and drink beer.
Highlights of her career have been
a shoot in the Greek Islands with
best friend and Australian model
Catherine McNeil and then camping
with her at Sziget, a Hungarian
Festival in Budapest.
Melbourne is her favourite city.
“I love so many cities for different
reasons, but my heart will always
belong to Melbourne. It’s my home.
It has so much soul.”

Her Australian boyfriend lives
with her in Williamsburg,
Brooklyn. But she has admitted
to being bi-curious. “I’ve always
swung both ways … I don’t call
myself bisexual. I’m just experimental.”

HOW TO AVOID INJURY
If like me you began your new year
with a promise to yourself to get
healthy and move more but niggling
little pains seem to thwart your every
plan, then a visit to the chiropractor
might be the answer to help get your
body in tip-top shape before you begin
new movements.
According to Michael Sexton from
Sexton Chiropractic in Carlton you
should start early with chiropractic
visits to look after the wellbeing of
your body. In fact, you should start
having your spine checked regularly
from childhood.
The journey to wellness should start
from the moment you are born and
continue throughout your life. Sexton
says in his practice he sees 2-day-old
babies and 95-year-old grandmothers.
“The highest priority in our practice
is to treat children. Making sure they
grow with a healthy, balanced spine,”
says Sexton.
“Minor imbalances in the position or
movement patterns of spinal bones
may cause few obvious symptoms in
children, yet these subluxations may
have a significant impact on nerve
function and therefore health ...
both now and in the future.
“Children with healthy spines
are healthier children.”
Sexton recommends that babies
should have their spines checked
after birth whether they are healthy
or not. He says that many conditions
of infants respond very well to
chiropractic care. Colic, irritability,
allergic reactions, sleeping and feeding
problems and even weakened immune
function can often be linked to nerve
irritation caused by spinal dysfunction.
Visits to a chiropractor should be
attended on a regular basis, much
like visiting a dentist yearly, he
explains, as a preventive measure.
“As Chiropractors our main focus
is on the health of your spine and
nervous system. The nervous system
essentially runs every aspect of your
wellbeing. It is one of the most
neglected aspects of health care
out there.
“If your spine is better balanced
then your nervous system always
functions better.”
According to Sexton, the single
most important factor in wellbeing
is the health and function of your
nervous system.
The nervous system is the master
system controlling and co-ordinating
the function of virtually every
cell, tissue and organ in the body.
Interference to normal nerve function
will interfere with your health.
When there is an imbalance in the
spine it can interfere with normal
nerve function. Chiropractors call this
a subluxation. It’s when the bones of
the spine lose their normal position or
movement. This can place extra stress
on bones, discs, ligaments and muscles
of your spine leading to degenerative
wear and tear. Most significantly,
however, it may compromise the
normal function of your nervous
system and diminish health.
Subluxations may be caused by
many factors such as poor posture,
knocks, falls, car accidents, and even
the birth process can be a major
cause of subluxation in the newborn
child. Stress, whether it is physical,
emotional or chemical, is one
of the most common causes
of spinal subluxation.
Subluxations are treated by
chiropractors through specific
adjustments to correct imbalances
in the spine and restore normal
nerve function.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SPINE
“The primary purpose of adjusting
your spine is to adjust your nervous
system. If your nerves work better,
everything at the end of those nerves
will work better too,” says Sexton.

Visit a chiropractor regularly.
Change your posture every 45
minutes. If you are sitting down,
get up and walk. If your job
requires standing, do some
stretches or sit for a while
if possible.
Don’t carry a heavy bag. Alternate
the shoulder to prevent locking
the shoulder muscle and stressing
the upper back.
Make sure children’s school bags
are adjusted correctly and carried
in the right position on the back
and are not too heavy.
Alternate your heels. Walk to
work in flat shoes and change
to heels.
When wearing runners make sure
they support the arch of the foot
to avoid rolling the foot and
rotating the knee.
Find a personal trainer that
understands the spine.
Make sure your bed supports
your spine correctly.

“The patterns of movement and
posture in your spine develop in the
early years and most people don’t
tend to do anything about the health
of their spine until they experience
significant pain and then it still isn’t
their first line of treatment. They turn
to pain killers and anti-inflammatories
and drugs.
“The main thing to understand when
you have pain is that it is usually an
irritation and that often happens when
the spine is out of balance. We try to
make sure people don’t get to that
point. Our main focus is to encourage
a healthy lifestyle and to encourage
people to move, eat well and think
well.”
Chiropractors have had a bad rap
in the past with some medical
professions showing a lack of respect
but Sexton says that is changing.
“If you look at the research that’s been
done on patient satisfaction in health
care, chiropractic always very much
comes out on top,” he says.
“Most of the people we see are healthy
people. It’s just about maintaining the
health of your spine.”

orchestra to play at Paris’ Theatre du
Chatelet, Andrei hatches a plan to

La Face Clinic.
What Renata is talking about is
not the false lashes that you can buy
in a chemist, but individual synthetic
lashes that are applied individually
to each one of your lashes, giving
you a full set of thick, long, fluttering
lashes. With these lashes you can
shower and swim and they won’t
come off until your lash falls out.
And it’s not just celebrities like Kelly
Rowland and Twilight’s Ashley Greene
who have embraced this growing
trend.
“It’s everyday women who just
want to have great looking lashes,”
Renata says.
La Face uses the American
Xtreme lashes that you see on
all the celebrities. They are called
semi-permanent and are applied with
a medical glue that is considered safe.
It’s not a quick process. A full set can
take up to two hours. As lashes have
a 60-day cycle you need refills to keep
the look and they take about an hour.
Refills are recommended every three
to four weeks. A full set costs $175
and refills $75.
“Unlike other false lashes that

Katie Barrow senior stylist and colourist talks hair trends.
Overseas celebrities such as Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson, Nicole
Ritchie and Hayden Panettiere have all swapped their blonde locks
recently for dark hair. This is a trend we will be seeing more of in
Australia according to Katie Barrow, senior stylist and colourist
from Raw Elements hair salon.
“We’ll be seeing a lot more of warmer
richer colours like chocolates, auburns,
reds and soft coppers,” says Barrow.
For the girls who don’t want to go
dark, Barrow suggests they can go
a warmer blonde by adding creamy,
caramel tones and adding a darker
blonde in the hair to break it up.
“Coming out of summer when
everyone wanted to go really light
blonde, with that sort of beachy
looking hair, we are now toning
it down making it a bit soft and
blended,” says Barrow.
“Blondes can still do a lot of different
variations in the colours using
different placements with highlights.
The darker tones allow you to feature
panels by cutting a fringe in and
putting colour into the fringe.”
While the look in the past has been
for very natural, healthy looking hair,
Barrow believes people want to be a
bit more adventurous.
“People want to do something
different and are looking for new
ideas. They are definitely playing
around a bit more with colours now.
Of course, there are still women
who love the softer coloured tones
and don’t want anything to stand
out, but you can still do panels and
have different ways of putting colour
in without giving them too much
contrast,” she says.
It’s not only about the colour but
the way the colour is used that is also
setting a trend.
“There is a stretched root trend that is
coming in,” Barrow
says.
This is when the colourist doesn’t take
their colour all the way to the root to
allow some of the client’s natural dark
colour to show through. A bonus of
this new trend is that it allows the
client to wait longer with re-growth
before having to visit the salon.
“Not everyone wants their highlights
completely to the root. I’ve been doing
a bit of that in the salon now to give
a look of darker colours fading into
lighter colours,” Barrow says. “It used
to be cover all that up, but now it lets
people wear their colour a lot longer
and that re-growth is starting to come
into fashion.”
For hair styles, Barrow says women
mostly want length but for those who
have been wearing the current pixie
style (think actress Morena Baccarin
in the sci-fi TV show V), it now
has more length in the front.
“There’s more length in the pixie style.
It’s shorter around the nape area and
ears with longer pieces through the
fringe,” she says.
We are also seeing a return to fringes.
“Fringes are big at the moment.
The full side fringe and flicking out
fringes are popular,” Barrow says.
And hair is not being worn dead
straight anymore.
This is achieved through use of
good styling products to let the hair’s
natural curl come through and create
a wavy finish.
Barrow recommends that you have
a consultation with your hairdresser
to work out what best suits you before
deciding on any major changes.
“Obviously short hair is for people
who suit short hair and not everyone
can wear their hair in that style,”
Barrow says.
“You need to take into consideration
the shape of the face and what the
client is comfortable with and how
much time they put into styling
their hair.”
“There’s more texture to the hair,”
Barrow explains.

Have you ever wondered where your
coin donation goes when you drop it in
a Salvation Army collection tin at Lygon
Court?
It never leaves the Carlton area,
according to Brian Crowden, Captain
of Carlton Salvation Army.

“Our Church doesn’t receive any
funding from the Salvation Army. All
the money raised from the two weeks
at Christmas time in Lygon Court last
year goes to the Carlton recipients,”
Crowden says.
“What we collect at Christmas time
makes up half our budget. We couldn’t
operate without these funds.
He is currently supporting a young lady
by providing her with a place to sleep
and meals.
“We received $20,000 last year, which is
a massive amount that has enabled us to
keep going for the next 12 months.
“We are putting quite a few resources
into her,” Crowden says.
“What we collect at this time allows us
the freedom to determine our programs
within the Carlton area. We run our
programs on an individual needs basis.”
To most of us $20,000 may not seem a
large amount of money for a program,
but this money helps the Church
support individuals who really need
help.
His church is able to do a quick
assessment of needs and responds
quickly and appropriately. It does not
give out money but can supply food and
clothing and help with accommodation
if need be. Each individual is assessed
and supported.

“There is a hole in the system,”
he points out.
He is seeing a growing number of
international students in what Crowden
describes as “living in deep poverty”,
especially the Indian and Chinese
students. He says they come here
believing they can get a job and when
they can’t, they then can’t pay their fees,
accommodation or buy food.
Crowden says that when people contact
him, they are at a crisis point and
usually have no money for food, clothes
or accommodation.

Crowden has been at the Church
for 10 years and has seen a change
in the area.
“We endeavour to get to people who
are in the greatest need and stop them
going over the edge - to the people
living with the barest of necessities and
giving them a little of luxury in the form
of food or clothes. It doesn’t do any
harm,” Crowden says.
Lygon Court made a donation to the
church late last year and Crowden is
excited because with this money he is
setting up a pantry at the back of the
church, mainly for the international
students and it is “catering for their
particular type of cuisine”. It will be
ready next month.
“This is something we couldn’t do
without the gift from Lygon Court. It
has allowed us to establish this program.
Everything we get doesn’t go outside
these borders,” Crowden says.
Like all charities, every bit helps and
Crowden would love to
do more, perhaps even prepared meals.
He is happy to hear from anyone
interested in helping with food or who
would simply like to join the volunteer
bank.
“If you feel the need to offer support,
just give us a ring,” Crowden says.

A chance drive down Lygon Street saw Jo Demarte become Lygon Court’s pharmacist.

Even after all these years Demarte can’t
help but sing Lygon Street’s praises.
“It’s a sensational spot. Carlton is a
wonderful community,” he says.
Then the theatres came and
Borders and the mix changed.
Now, he says, it is a well
established centre.
Demarte was offered a chance to
secure a space in Lygon Court when
it was being built but because he was
involved with several pharmacies at
the time, he decided against it. Then
one day a chance drive down Lygon
street after the shopping precinct was
finished made him change his mind
about going into the centre.
And Demarte should know. He
has first-hand knowledge of the
community as he deals with them on a
one to one basis daily.
“A pharmacy is a place where you look
after each other. First and foremost a
pharmacy is a place where you help
people with their health-related
problems. You build up an empathy
with people and you build up a patient
relationship. They keep coming back.”
“It’s not a regional centre.
You can’t come here expecting
that because you’re not
going to get that. It’s
a small personalised
centre where you are
going to get good
old-fashioned
personalised
service,” says
Demarte.
harmacist Jo Demarte has
been dispensing prescriptions
from his Amcal Chemist for
the past 21 years and he’s still
just as enamoured with the Carlton
area as he was when he first drove
down Lygon Street and saw Lygon
Court after its development in 1989.
“Back then and to this day I don’t
think I’ve ever seen a nicer, more
beautiful centre,” says Demarte.
“We took the last shop that was left
in the court after the initial round of
leasing. In other words, they had let all
the shops in the court except for the
one that we took. Eventually we went
in their as the pharmacy.
“At the time I was involved with
a number of pharmacies and had
partners. We had looked at this centre
when it was on the plan but for various
reasons we didn’t want to go into it.
We then forgot about it.
“Then one day 18 months later I was
just driving along Lygon Street and it
was there! I thought I’ve got to go in
and have a look at it.
“It was really sensational, the architect
and the design. I was gob-smacked.
“Within a day or two I had made up
my mind I was going in.
I rang up one of my partners and
said, ‘You know that centre we forgot
about? It’s there if you want to go into
it … it’ll be a wonderful place to work’.
And it is a wonderful place to work.”
“It’s also the identities in Lygon Street
that make up the community. It’s
almost an institution. It’s such a great
place.

“I think when people come to shop
in Carlton they get a sense of that
community. There’s that certain
feeling about going to Carlton.”
Demarte prides himself in providing
the Carlton community with a
pharmacy where people can get
personalised service and he hasn’t
given in to becoming similar to a
discount store.
“We’re a traditional pharmacy where
we still spend time with our patients
and try to give them a good result
because we consider ourselves health
care professionals first,” says Demarte.
“We sit them down if we need to and
explain their medicine. We still have
the propensity to do that. People walk
out of the pharmacy knowing about
their medicine.”
Demarte explains that Lygon Court
went from being a very Mediterranean
centre, a lovely niche market centre
where there was Safeway downstairs
and retailers on the next level.

I love the look of ankle boots, but I’m not sure how to wear
them or if I should as I’m in my late 30s?
Ankle boots are really hot this season and thankfully can be worn
at any age. The only time you need to stay away from this style of
boot is if you have crankles (calf-ankles), as the calf can disappear
into the boot making the leg look too straight – not a good look. The
beautiful thing about the ankle boot is, like the long boot, it can be
worn with a short skirt, leggings or skinny jeans and the new longer
maxi-length dresses and coats that are in right now.
What items should I buy this winter to update my look?
There are a lot of fun high-trend pieces around that will instantly
update your fashion look. Firstly, anything purple especially in
accessories such as bags, shoes and jewellery. Look for a fabulous
boot either long or short, a great jacket with the new style
sculptured shoulders and skinny jeans or leggings. And for a really
current item, anything that is faux, fur and fun.
I’m confused about the way to wear my make-up. I’m used
to applying eye shadow and lipstick that tones with what
I’m wearing. But all the magazines I look at say you play up
one or the other. Am I outdated?
For the last few years there has been a beauty trend normally taken
straight from the international runways to either dramatically play up
the eyes while toning down the lips or visa-versa; a strong lip with
barely there, natural-looking eye make-up. However, this season is
seeing a return to a complete groomed feel where both the eyes
and lips are accentuated. This is called a full glam make-up as it is a
total look.
