Annual Meeting March 2016
On March 2, the Annual meeting was presided over by Gene
Prescott and the existing Board (Paul Kranig, Ron Olm, Rick Peters,
Leonard Schroeder and Jerry Stevenson). Mike Worthy, Chairman of
the Elections Committee declared a meeting quorum.
Guests included Brian Morgan, Attorney and John Kemper,
President, FirstService Residential.
FirstService Residential manager Rick Burman and his staff
(Debbie, Jennifer, Tami, Barbara, Dirk and George) were recognized
for their outstanding service contributions to MountainBrook Village
during the past year.
Gene Prescott commented on the Board’s teamwork and
ongoing investment in Community-wide programs. He reviewed
2015 improvements including: upgrading the Entrance Fountain;
commissioning of the Mesquite Center; MountainBrook Dr.
beautification and landscaping; significant progress in wash
maintenance and erosion control; new projectors, screens and camera
in the Superstition Center; tennis and pickleball fence painting;
replacement of the dated FOB system; and many other Community
enhancements.
Gene also spoke about the year ahead. The upcoming Ocotillo
remodel is targeted for completion in September. The Superstition
storage shelving will initially be used to house the temporary Ocotillo
Center equipment. The Great Wall erosion project will be bid once
the engineer’s plans have been received. There will be a continuing

Do you like Coffee and News on Tuesday morning? Rick Peters
has been making the coffee and serving donuts for over 8 years and
he’s getting tired and plans to retire soon. So, if you have an interest,
here’s an opportunity to have some fun. The job isn’t very difficult.
You have to like people and most everyone really appreciates your
work and like you back. Now, what’s required? Be on the job at
7:00 AM and have the first coffee ready for the early birds at 7:30
AM. The whole thing only takes from 7:00 AM until 9:30 AM every
Tuesday. Rick says “I’ve enjoyed this job for the past 8 years. I’ve
met and become friends with many of the residents. For everything
MountainBrook gives to us, this is a great way to give back to the community.” Please call

starts in May, we are targeting a September completion. The remodel
will update the Fitness Center; create a 1600 sq. ft. Multi-Purpose room;
add an Arts & Crafts room; remodel the bathrooms; reconfigure the
utility closet; add a storage area; and upgrade the A/V services in the
Center and pool area.
On the Information Management front, Jerry has been working with
Rick Burman to prioritize the migration of our Community documents
to the Board, the Committees and our VIP’s.
We have seen many new neighbors volunteering for the first time! All
the HOA 101 classes have been completely booked and we look forward
to seeing more of you as we expand this program.
Jennifer McGraw and Claudia’s Activity Committee have brought us
an outstanding portfolio of entertainment and our home-grown drama
and music events have been fantastic this season!

President's Corner
As the Board wrapped up the 2015 term I
reviewed much of the year’s progress at the
March 2 Annual Meeting. This material is
covered in a separate Mountaineer article.
The existing Board has spent time with
the two incoming members and I know Peter
and Wayne will be excellent Community
contributors as we move forward.
The Entrance Fountain is totally operational and you will notice
the improvements in the nearby landscaping. The addition of noise
suppression panels and some re-ducting to improve temperature control
will soon be added to the Mesquite Center.
We are fine tuning the construction plans for the Ocotillo Center and
expect to have the contract finalized this month. Assuming construction
A new concrete trash receptacle will be placed at the north end of
Mountainbrook Drive. Up to $800 will be funded from Operations.
StormWater Pros was chosen to clean out two culverts in Hidden
Canyon. The $1,500 will be funded from Wash Reserves.
Atwell, LLC will provide improvement plans for the Great Wall
area. The $3,800 will be funded from Wash Reserves.
The Ocotillo Center remodel plans from Duncan-Coor Architects
was approved.
The installation of one retired office laptop in the Library and one
in the Superstition A/V area was approved.
The Plan and Design Committee processes were received.
The Board tabled the motion to patch Tennis Courts #1 and #2 and
purchase wind screens until a second bid is received.

Meeting Highlights
The Board meeting was called to order by President Gene Prescott.
All six members were present: Paul Kranig, Director; Ron Olm,
Director (by Proxy); Rick Peters, Director; Gene Prescott, President;
Leonard Schroeder, Vice President; and Jerry Stevenson, Secretary.
Gene reported that the dumpster area behind the Superstition Center
is a fire corridor and this is impacting the decision for the dumpster
relocation and potential seating area for Pickleball; the dumpster will
remain as originally located. The Entrance Fountain landscaping
work (phase I and II) has been completed. The nearby landscaping
cleanup along the Hwy 60 roadside in front of the Entrance Fountain
will be cleaned up by Coy Landscaping. Coy cleaned up a cement
truck’s washout debris from a culvert on Crested Saguaro. The
Ocotillo remodel bid proposal from Global Protection Services is
expected this week.
Tami Tack gave the Treasurer’s report as of 1/31/16. The cash
on hand was reduced by $349,984 compared to 2015 due to the
Mesquite remodel. January Operating financials were on target with
the budget. There were 2 homes sold in January compared to 10 last
year.
Rick Burman, Community Manager, reported that Coy has started
removing the Jumping Cholla from Mountainbrook Drive. The new
FOB system is operational and new FOB’s are initialized instantly.
Ashley Fowler, our new part time receptionist, has started at the
Front Desk.
The Board approved the following motions:
The purchase of 30 sound mitigation panels from Global Protection
Services for the Mesquite Center. The $4,991.90 (plus tax) will be
funded from Future Development.
Entrance fountain landscape lighting by Arizona Structures was
approved for $2,000 from Operations.
The Board decided not to spend the $3,256 to repair the slide
mechanisms on the West pool cover.

VILLAGE VOICES
Bill Wash
Audiences have been yearning for an encore after each of the
prior year’s Christmas and Spring Concerts as evidenced by their
standing ovations. Well, our favorite audiences received just that
on March 11 & 12 when our Spring Concert performed songs that
were selected from the last 10 years Spring Concerts that were
audience favorites. Thus, the concert theme was Encore, Encore. The success of our concerts is due to Patty Sobek, Director; Marty
Robison, a most gifted pianist; Karen Carnahan who always delights
with her narration; and Jane Gehrt, concert coordinator who brings
the concerts together with her creative talents and her “behind the
scenes” hard work. The Voices choir now goes dark until they
meet again to practice for their Christmas Concert on Wednesday,
September 7 at 1 pm in the Superstition Center. So, for all who
wish to join and sing with the Village Voices, please plan to join the
choir on September 7. We wish you all a very pleasant summer and
remember to sing in the shower.

Franc
D’Ambrosio,
the
longest running Phantom of the
Opera in San Francisco’s Curran
Theatre, returns to Gold Canyon, Arizona, this time to present his
fabulous, critically acclaimed show “Hollywood: Songs of the
Silver Screen”.
Some of our fondest memories are triggered by hearing great
songs from the movies. Just to name a few, Franc sings “Pennies
from Heaven”, Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek”, “Some Enchanted
Evening”, and the unforgettable “Singin’ In The Rain”, evoking
memories of Gene Kelly’s lifetime signature role.
Mr. D’ambrosio has a mesmerizing “golden voice” which
effortlessly reaches lower octaves and then amiably spins to tenor
notes without hesitation. This was the reason he was cast as
Anthony Corleone, the opera singing son, in the Academy Award
nominated film “The Godfather III”. The performance so impressed
the late Luciano Pavarotti that it led to an invitation, which Franc
quickly accepted, for him to study with the legendary tenor at his
home in Italy.

On the second Tuesday of every month, your President
holds an open forum during or after the Coffee & News. At
this forum residents have the opportunity to ask questions
and get answers. Come join us at the Coffee & News and
bring your question or simply listen to the Q & A. Here are
some examples from February.
Question: One of our neighbors has a large black dog which
he lets walk loose on the road and in the wash area adjacent to our
home. Since the dog is a vicious breed, we are all afraid of the dog
when it is off the leash. What can we do about this?
Response: This is very unfortunate and we can appreciate your
safety concern. All dogs must be on a leash and not be allowed to
roam even when the owner is nearby. You can call Pinal County
Animal Control at 520-509-3555
the increased noise problem today is the existence of the “wall-gap”
where there is a 143 foot iron fence on golf course holes which are
in my neighborhood. I would like you to consider closing these gaps
with brick walls.
Response: You are correct, the traffic on Highway 60 continues
to grow. We have approached the County to install signs reminding
truckers not to use their Jake Brakes as they pass through Gold
Canyon. At this time there is no plan to work with the Golf Course
to replace the iron fencing with brick walls.
Question: The Pinal County roadways in my neighborhood are in
significant need of repair. Is there something MountainBrook can do
to leverage the County to do repairs on all MountainBrook streets?
Response: Yes, even after the crack patching and oiling the
County did several years ago, the streets continue to show wear.
Our Community Manager will discuss the need for further road
improvements with the County.
Question: A property on Lavender is overgrown with weeds. I
put in the complaint four months ago, and the problem has become
worse. What is being done?
Response: MountainBrook Village is aware of this issue and has
been following the established enforcement procedure per MBV
governing documents. Coy Landscaping has cleaned it up. Submitted by: Jerry Stevenson, HOA Secretary

this is deterring buyers as I try to sell my home. A major reason for

Is seems like it was only yesterday when Canyon Cookout fired up the grills for the 2016
season. By all reports, Jack and his team have been very busy providing a great lunch for
fellow MountainBrook residents. Plenty of return customers and an abundance of new
faces as well. Jack has announced that the last cookout of the season will be held on April
13, 2016. So don’t put off giving the cookout a try if you haven’t already joined the crowd.
Don’t forget: residents may bring guests. Stop on in Wednesdays in the Sunset Center, 11:30

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT??
By Gene Prescott, President, HOA
In 1999 the Community of MountainBrook Village (MBV)
approved the First Amendment to the CC&Rs and established
the “Future Development Contribution” (FD). It defined who
pays the contribution, set the dollar amount of the contribution,
and identified precisely how FD can be spent.
The buyer of a lot in MBV, not the seller, is obligated to pay
the Future Development Contribution, or fee, in the amount of
$250.00 at the time of the purchase closing. Future Development
may only be used “to pay costs and expenses related to the
design or construction of recreational facilities and amenities
on the Common Area or for the design and construction of
additions to or expansions of existing community recreation
facilities and amenities situated on the Common Area.” The
Board of Directors determines items to be purchased and
whether Future Development money is the appropriate funding
source.
This fee of $250.00 has not changed in 17 years, nor has it
kept pace with rising purchasing costs or fees paid by similar
retirement communities with comparable amenities. It is
essential to maintain a healthy Future Development.
Many campus amenities of MBV have been in existence
for 20 plus years, and are in need of renovation. During
renovation, there are usually new items that fall into the
established category of Future Development expenditures.
In order to maintain vibrancy and attractiveness to potential
home buyers in MountainBrook Village, the amenities must
keep pace with the expectations of those buyers. Renovations
March 2016
as well as changing interests of resident demographics within
MBV dictate Future Development expenditures.
The MountainBrook Village Board of Directors is proposing
a second amendment to the CC&Rs be approved by the
Community to increase the Future Development fee to the
current annual assessment at the time of the purchase closing,
currently $860.00. Future increases to the annual assessment
will automatically increase the Future Development fee.
Approval of the amendment will ensure Future Development
progresses with the pace of the Community.
In order to approve this amendment to our governing
documents, the CC&Rs, 1245 homes must return the written
consent form to the office marked to approve the amendment
(75% of the total 1660 homes in MountainBrook Village). The
written consent forms will be mailed May 1st . The Board
of Directors urges you to consider the request to increase the
Future Development Contribution, and mark your consent form
to approve. If the MBV residents all band together, this change
can be accomplished for the current and future benefit of all.
I t’s a New Year; a time to make a fresh start and discover new things!
If you haven’t been to Barleens yet this season, you are going to see some
amazing new talent backed by the family favorites you already love. And if
you’ve never been here before, now’s the time to discover what our regulars
already know: the Best just got Better!

MVB was well represented by 20 people who staffed the

the seller) at the time of the purchase closing. The CC&Rs
state that Future Development may only be used “to pay
costs and expenses related to the design or construction of
recreational facilities and amenities on the Common Area or
for the design and construction of additions to or expansions of
existing community recreation facilities and amenities situated
on the Common Area.” Therefore, the who (buyer), the when
(at purchase closing) & the what (additions or expansions of
recreation facilities and amenities) have been explained.
Due to the age of many MBV campus amenities, renovation
projects have been undertaken within the past few years
& are projected into the future. During the plan & design
process of renovations, it is appropriate that new items are
identified which may both enhance the end product & qualify
as FD expenditures. Requests initiated by residents as well as
changing interests of residents also lead to consideration of
items for purchase using FD monies. The Board of Directors
ultimately determines which items are purchased & whether
FD is the appropriate funding source.
A few specific items which have recently been
purchased utilizing FD are as follows:
HOW IS THE FUTURE
DEVELOPMENT FEE USED?
Stage curtain (Superstition Center)
Installation of arm for bocce ball bench
By Tami Tack, Budget & Finance Chair
New door & security system functionality (Palo Verde Room)
In previous articles in the Mountaineer, the functionality
of the Future Development (FD) fee has been identified as an
obligation of the buyer of a lot in MountainBrook Village (not

Purchase & wire motion cameras (Fitness Center)
Icemaker (Ironwood Kitchen)

2 Emergency hands free phones (Mesquite Bath Houses)
Purchase motion cameras (Pool Area)

Ocotillo renovation include the following:
2 70” Televisions (Multipurpose Room)
Double entry doors & storage shelving (Storage Room)
New south door & window (Arts & Crafts Room)
8 12” Solar tubes
The MountainBrook Village Board of Directors is proposing
an increase to the Future Development fee. Your written consent
to approve the increase is vital as the Community, through its
Board, works to refine, improve & protect your MBV common
area assets so your experiences using the amenities is vibrant &
relevant to new & current residents.

Gold Canyon United Methodist
Church Food Bank
Jeff Downing, Dan Gray and Rush Tucker - Food Bank Managers
Did you know that there is a Food Bank in Gold Canyon that
has been serving the community for over 23 years? This Food
Bank is a mission of the Gold Canyon United Methodist Church.
Our mission actually started out in a closet and has grown every
year since. We don’t limit our giving to Gold Canyon we will
provide food to anyone who has a genuine need.
Have you ever wondered what goes into an emergency Food
Bank bag? Our Food Bank has recently changed the methods that
we use to determine what food and other items are given to our
clients. We give food based on family size, inventory availability
and special requests. Currently we pre-pack food bags for three
levels of clients. Our “Basic” bag is for 1-2 individuals, then
we have a “Family” bag which is for 3-5 family members. Our
newest level is called the “Large Family” bag and is for 6 and up
family members.
If you were to analyze a “Family” bag you would first find out
that it is actually two full paper bags plus additional items such
as pet food, hygiene items, frozen meat, bread and something
sweet such as a container of cupcakes or cookies. The contents
are designed to address a balanced set of meals that would last
from 3-4 days. The retail value of this emergency distribution
is approximately $105.63. Clients are allowed to come to our
Food Bank twice a month. We hope this helps you understand
the importance and value of any of your donations. The “Basic”
bag is obviously a little less than the “Family” bag and the “Large
Family” bag is more. With this level of giving we are shopping
for our inventory about twice a week. The number of families
we have provided an emergency food supply in the year 2015 is
3,084. That number represents feeding 9,797 individuals, 7,283
bags of food.
We are available for food distribution Monday to Friday from
8:30 AM until noon and accept donations through the Church
office Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. We would
like to thank the residents of MountainBrook Village for helping
to support this mission.
THEATRE
Bill Wash The Mountain Brook Village Theatre’s performances of Where
There’s A Will There’s A Relative ended its four day run on
Sunday, February 28. The Directors, Producer and cast extend
an appreciative “Thank You” to their audiences for attending and
hope you enjoyed watching the play as much as the actors enjoyed
performing and interpreting their characters. A special “Thank You”
to Bob Carnahan for once again designing and building the set, this
time with an imaginary wall and door. We hope you all enjoyed
our invited guest actor, Vinny De Paul, as he took on the role of the
deceased Sam Price. Vinny never missed a cue.
Next year’s play is The Odd Couple (female version), a play in two
acts by Neil Simon. Mary Stoalabarger will direct and BJ Jensen
will produce the play. Auditions for six female and two male roles
were recently held on March 10 & 11. Names of the lucky actors
who were awarded roles will be announced in the next Mountaineer.
We are always looking for volunteers, so if you’ve ever wondered
what it takes to put on a play and you would like to contribute to its
success, you are invited to attend the next Theatre Board Meeting on
Thursday, April 7 at 1 pm in the Palo Verde Room. We look forward
to meeting you and will be happy to answer any questions. If you are
unable to attend, you may call BJ Jensen, Producer at 480 671-5989
who will be happy to discuss those areas/positions in which we need
volunteers. We thank you in advance.

THEY NEED ME
By Emily York
“They need me” is what I said to my husband,
Stan, when we first came to Mountainbrook
in 2002. We went to a Mountainbrook Band
concert directed by Don Barta. It was a small
band but a pretty good one, but with only 3 or
4 clarinets.
I started playing a soprano saxophone when
I was about 8. My fingers were too small to
cover the holes in a clarinet. By the time I was
in junior high school and playing in a band my
fingers were big enough for the clarinet so I
tried it. That was it. I liked it. I played in
pep bands, marching bands, dance bands and
concert bands through high school and then
some. I had good and demanding directors and
a very good private teacher. Music was my life
until…..
I married young, moved to the East Coast with Stan, worked
and went to school, and in two years our family started. It was
time to move on and the clarinet got sold.
But, fifty years later here was my chance to find out if I
could still play the clarinet. We went back to Wisconsin after
the Mountainbrook visit and I borrowed an old clarinet from a
friend. I shut myself in a closet and put it together. At least
I remembered how to do that. Then I blew into it. Nothing!
Another try, a horrible sound came out but it was a sound.
Perhaps the problem was partially with the clarinet. I rented
one from our local music store and signed up for a few lessons
and, voila! Actual notes came out. My teacher said I must join
the New Horizon Band, an International organization of bands
for people like me, who wanted to come back to music and were
55 years old or older. My teacher took me to a rehearsal. I sat in
the last chair of the clarinet section and I was in heaven. A few
months later I played in my first concert in over 50 years.
Back to Mountainbrook. Don Barta said I could join the band
and I sat in the last chair and was in heaven again. Playing in
the first chair was a man who played the clarinet beautifully and
he seemed nice so I asked him, LeRoy Wolter, a former band
director from Wisconsin, if he would give me a few lessons.
“No” he said, “but stick around after band and we will play a
bit.” I did and he gave me a lesson in front of the other band
members who were putting their instruments away. Nervous?
Yes, but happy. Pretty soon LeRoy said, “Sit next to me in the
band” and I did. I listened, I learned and I loved playing.
I met wonderful musicians, both professionals and people
who just loved to play. There were those who came back to their
instruments later in life just like I did. They became friends.
I became more confident, and with encouragement of band
members, Bob Messner, Donn Modlin, and John Read, I joined
the East Valley Pops Orchestra, formerly the Silveridge Pops
Orchestra. More friends, more music, more fun.
Maybe I thought the band needed me, but I learned I needed
the band!
This piece was inspired by the January 2016 Band Concert
which was a tribute to Don Barta.
Celebrate Spring with the
MountainBrook Band
The MountainBrook 62-piece concert band, under the
direction of Skeets Mahoney assisted by Julie Mahoney and
Gary Browning, presents a varied program of marches, big band
and Broadway tunes. Highlighted will be the clarinet section
playing Debussy’s Reverie. Also in the style of big band jazz,
Skeets Mahoney and Gary Browning will play a tenor sax and
vibraphone duet with the band as they play Georgia On My
Mind.
We will also have CD’s available from the January winter
concert for $10.00
The concert is March 20, 2016, at 3:00 pm and the doors open
at 2:30 pm in the Superstition Center. Tickets are on sale at the
office or at the door for $8.00

This, That &
Other Things
Been anywhere lately? Seen anything lately? Eaten anything lately?
This is not to advertise any business, just to let your MBV neighbors know what you found interesting or worth
seeing and definitely where you ate that was good or maybe a fun place to go for lunch or dinner. How about a good
destination or day trip, love to know about some of those. No bad experiences please and no responses back about
a recommendation. Most establishments have a bad day every now and then.
OK, I’ll start. Joe’s Farm and Grill. It was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy
Fieri. Not fancy, casual eat in or outside. Great place to eat outside now that we are having this awesome weather.
You order at the counter and they buzz you to pick it up. We really enjoyed our food. Located at 3000 E Ray Rd,
Gilbert. Just a suggestion, nothing more, nothing less

Cataloging Walls Project
During the next month, the Buildings and Grounds Committee will
be cataloging walls in four subdivisions (Shadowridge I, Shadowridge
II, Hidden Canyon and Ironwood I). The Committee members will be
wearing orange MBV vests and will be doing the work in golf carts.
The objective of this work is to identify the location of the various
types of walls in MBV and to determine the wall responsibilities of the
Association so that an orderly maintenance schedule can be organized.
Guess what? We would love to see them. Send them to
[email protected], give them a title and we
will put them in the next issue being published, as space allows, and
of course listing you as the photographer. Whether you have a cell
phone or a top notch camera, I know we will get some wonderful
pictures from the place we call home.

What are all of our COMMITTEES
up too? Let's start with the
COMMUNICATIONS Committee
The purpose of the MountainBrook Village Communications
Committee is to collect/create, disseminate, and archive information
that is important to the MountainBrook Village (MBV) Home
Owners Association (HOA) Board of Directors and members.
The Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month at 9:00
a.m. in the Mesquite Room. There are four workgroups within the
Communications Committee: Mountaineer, Website, Safety and
Audio Visual. Members of the Communications Committee include:
Chris Bukovac -Chair, Jay Raleigh, Barb Sebring, Marilee Prichard
and Diana Jensen. Michael Worthy and Tom Stoalabarger are regular
volunteers.
The Communication Committee has two primary means of
communicating information to the community. The Mountaineer
publishes a monthly newspaper for the community with activities
and local community information. www.mbvaz.org, the web site is an
online source of information for the public as well as the community.
The Communication Committee also works in conjunction with the
Community Manager in regard to special notifications through the
Email Blasts. The Communication Committee collaborates with the
Plan & Design Committee to assist in the creation of signs for the
various buildings and rooms throughout the Community Campus as
well as the entrance monument. The Safety workgroup counsels the
Board of Directors related to the overall safety of the community.
The Audio Visual workgroup provides recommendations for the
procurement of appropriate technologies for public presentations
that may be needed in any building. This group also provides the
technical support to operate the equipment. The Communications
Committee is essential to ensure that residents of MountainBrook
Villager are well informed.

If life hands you lemons
You could make limoncello which seems to be a popular end to the overabundance of lemons that pop up every year. How much limoncello
can a person use? How much liquor can you legally make? Or, you could also make the delicious lemon blender pie; use the entire lemon
and amaze the newcomers with the simple, refreshing delight made from a local lemon.
I recently found another recipe for the bounty of lemons. Especially for those of us who are fortunate to have a Meyer lemon tree, but the
recipe claims you can use other citrus. Hope this works out, I am anxious to give it a try.
Citrus Crisps
Makes: About 2 dozen slices
3 fresh, firm Meyer lemons (or standard lemons, limes, or oranges)
1. Slice: Rinse and dry fruit. Use a sharp knife to slice into 1/8-inch thick disks. Discard any
seeds. Settle the circles on 1 or 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between
slices.
2. Bake: Heat the oven to 150 degrees — or as close as it will get (170 may be the lowest
setting). Bake, turning once, until dry (or dry-ish) to the touch, about 3 hours.
3. Rest: Turn off oven and let citrus crisps cool to room temperature, about 3 hours.
4. Dry: Pull sheets out of oven and let crisps sit at room temperature until completely dry. This
can take anywhere from 12 hours to 2 days.
5. Store: Gently peel crisps from the parchment. Pile into a clean glass jar and seal it. Crisps
will keep up to 1 year.
6. Enjoy: Nice dropped in a drink, pressed onto a cake, or scattered over roast chicken.

March 2016
WELCOME TO MBV CERAMICS
We meet at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Fired Arts
Center. The afternoon is spent glazing poured pieces of bisque and,
when completed, firing them in our kiln. If you would like to try your
hand at ceramics please stop in. We will provide you with a small
piece of bisque to glaze using any of the glazes available. Members of
the group are willing to allow you temporary use of brushes or other
tools you may need.
If you decide to join our group the fee is $5.00 per month which
pays for use of all the glazes you see on the wall shelves. It also
covers other supplies you may need for special tasks. Bisque pieces,
specialty glazes and brushes are available for purchase from ceramic
shops in the area. Firing is done at no charge to the ceramist.
We have several certified ceramics teachers available in our group
who have a world of experience and ideas for creating lovely pieces of
ceramic ware and they will help you get started in this creative activity.

Artist of the Month
Have you noticed the beautiful displays of art in the MBV library?
Did you know these are all done by local MBV residents? We are so
blessed to have such a variety of truly great artists in our community
and thank them for sharing their gifts with us. If you are one of these
talented people and would like to display some of your work give
us a call and we will set up a month for you. Jan or David Larsen

Book Discussion
for March
Peggy Malsom
Looking for Jane by Judith
Redline Coopey is the One Book
Arizona choice and our selection
for MBV Book Discussion for
the month of April. You can find
more information about it at
www.onebookaz.org in March
or at Amazon.com where it is
currently available in Kindle or paperback format. It received 4 ½
stars out of five from Amazon. I started to write something myself,
then I decided to just let some of the reviews speak for themselves:
“a quest for love & family in the 1890s brought to life through
the eyes of Nell, a young girl convinced that Calamity Jane is her
mother”; “Takes you on a journey you hope never ends”; “This
spunky girl is the female counterpart of Tom Sawyer and Huck
Finn”; “Fast moving, uplifting, a real gem”; “The ending for Nell is
a welcome surprise”.
All this and Deadwood, South Dakota, to boot. What’s not to love?

PINOCHLE
Pinochle – Thursday Evening
Dot Morrell
Thursday evening pinochle is played in the Sunset room and starts at 7:00pm. If you would like to join this group arrive before
7:00pm. Five games are played during the evening and you have a different partner for each game. Ken Amundsen had a high score
of 619 one evening and 522 another evening. Dolores O’Fallon had a 554 game, Bob Greason had a 551. Both Bonny Nielsen and Ed
Joyce had a score of 549 and Lavoyce Nolan came in with a score of 528. Join us for the evening of fun.
Pinochle – Tuesday afternoon Ladies
Suzanne Kadlec
Wow! What a great turnout in January for our Tuesday ladies’ afternoon group. The first place winner went to Raquel Jones with
8 games. There were 3 second place winners: Diane Kessner, Eileen Jost and Marie Lonley for 7 games each. Beginners and
experienced pinochle players are welcome. We start at 1:00 on Tuesday, come before that time so we can pick tables and partners.
TENNIS TALK
Tennis players were anxiously awaiting the format the organizers would choose for the January tennis
tournament, and they kept us in suspense right up to the very last. Because it was near the time of the Super
Bowl, they chose a football theme. Players were divided into two teams, Scorpions vs Rattlers. The threeday tournament matches ended in ties that the organizers had to break by tallying the number of games won
by each team. The RATTLERS won the most games, 142, compared to the SCORPIONS who were close
with 132 wins, they were awarded prizes for their efforts on the court. The organizers for the tournament
were Marla Muscio and Linda Gromada. The Sunday night awards banquet was organized by Sandy Smith
TENNIS TALK
and Teresa Pearson. Big thanks go out to these women for a great tournament.
Our next tournament will be held March 24, 25 and 26. We can’t wait to learn what format this group will
choose. Connie Hubbell and Elaine Coomes are in charge of the Tournament. Carole Austin and Caroline Breakey will host the banquet
which will be held Saturday March 26, 2016.
Round Robin times are back to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8-10 AM. All are welcome to come down to the courts and play.
ON THE BALL
Try a ball class with us this spring. This class consists of toning, cardio, and some light weight training. All moves
are done on the ball, under the ball, beside the ball, or just holding the ball It’s a super fun class, choreographed
to upbeat music. Students will need a mat, ball, and two sets of hand weights, one very light, and the other a
little heavier. Beginners will probably need 2 three pound weights and 2 five pound weights. More experienced
students can bring heavier weights, according to their fitness level. When purchasing a ball, remember, you
should be able to sit on it just as if you are in a chair. If your knees are under your chin, the ball is too small. If
you are semi standing, the ball is too large. Most balls have height charts to help you decide. Classes will be
held in the Ocotillo Room on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 8:00, right before Pilates. Come have fun while
burning calories, toning, and strengthening muscles. Any questions please call or email: Fran Strickler (317)7979224 or [email protected].
