Due to no objections or requests from the public to speak at the Board of Supervisors meeting regarding PZ-00312 and PZ-PD-003-12 the project has been approved. The site has been allowed to be rezoned to commercial and will eventually display park models and a sales office for Montesa Manufactured Home Park. When sales have been completed, approximately 2 years, the models and sales office will be removed and Montesa Commercial Center will be built. Currently there is no known start date due to the 24 stipulations attached to the approval. The design implementation team has been working with the architect to finalize plans for phase I of the renovation. In Mid-July, the final draft will go to the Board for their approval. As soon as it is approved, the general contractor will be selected, sub contractors will be hired and the work will begin. Expect to see lots of action around the campus for the remainder of the summer months with the completion expected between October 1 - 15. SOLICITORS David Jones, Property Manager Are you annoyed by the persistence of solicitors’ unwelcome knocks on the door? It seems like no matter what they do, they always manage to show up at your front door.. They come with fliers, door hangers, a rehearsed speech and the distinct ability to ignore the polite decline of the products they are peddling: cleaning supplies, appliances, cosmetics, magazine subscriptions, home improvement products, house painting and other unwanted items. Sometimes they make you feel trapped in your own home. Homeowners associations are particularly easy and frequent targets of commercial, religious and political solicitors. Part of the appeal is that population density makes our association an easy environment for them to canvas. Because of this, finding a way to keep solicitors away can be invaluable. The United States Supreme Court ruled that a state trespassing statue could not be used to prevent the distribution of materials on public streets. BOARD WORKSHOP New Neighbors...cont'd review all 24 stipulations. Within the 24 stipulations there are many checks and balances to assure each step is completed and a quality project is finalized. Two of the stipulations are relevant to MountainBrook residents which concern pedestrian and bike safety as well as traffic safety and congestion. Stipulation #10. All peripheral road and infrastructure improvements shall be per the approved Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) to mitigate impacts on all surrounding roadways to be completed at the developer's cost. These may include construction of acceleration/deceleration lanes, turn pockets, traffic signals or other public improvements as approved by the Tuesday, July 24th 2 pm in the Superstition Center. County Engineer. The TIA shall be In accordance with the current Pinal County TIA Guidelines & Procedures and shall be submitted at the time of the Site Plan submittal. The TIA shall be approved prior to the Site Plan approval; Stipulation #11. The TIA shall also be submitted to ADOT for their review and approval is required prior to the Site Plan approval and the applicant shall provide copies of ADOT approval documents to Pinal County. ROMANO'S MACARONI GRILL BLACK BEAR DINER July, 2012 From the Editor Cis Haines This month there were lots of phone calls about a big mistake in the Caring Corner. Now we know everyone reads the Mountaineer and we certainly thank you for that. As far as the error, let’s say it started with the labels “Illness” and “In Memory” being switched and then when we added two names, they went in their correct headings leaving us with a big mess. To insure this does not happen again we have decided to put Caring Corner only on the web where any errors that may occur can be corrected immediately. Thank you all for understanding and we apologize for the error. To access Caring Corner on the web, simply go to; www.mountainbrookvillage.org and click on Our Village and then click on Latest MBV News and it will appear. Caring Corner in the month of June should have read as follows: Illness: Marty Robison, ER Virgil Hedlund, DG Audrey McGarty, IWIII Mr Caroll Dage, IWII In Memory: Dean Johnson, IWII Judy Brehm, DV Jack Fahrner, DV Remember if you should hear of someone who has passed away or is ill, please call Arlene at 288-8011. Senior Menu items and value meals THANK YOU I am blessed to have such a large group of friends who are like family to me. Thank you for your many cards, well wishes and prayers for me during my difficult journey ahead. God bless, DeeDee Frazer. 6 July, 2012 Dear Amy Dear Amy: When I was talking with my sister Dora the other day, I mentioned that my hair is changing (thinning, greying, etc.), I’ve put on weight I can’t lose and I’m napping more frequently during the day. Dora said, “Maybe you are going through The Change again.” Now Dora isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, if you get my drift. My husband even calls her dumb-dumb Dora which I don’t think is very nice. Our other sister, Cora, is the smart one. But have you ever hear of going through The Change more than once? I can’t ask my doctor because he still thinks I’m a kook because I asked him if I got the Bends when we drove through Death Valley. I need your expert advice. Signed: Needs to Know Nora Dear Nora: First, let me get this straight. There are three sisters in your family: Dora, Cora and Nora? Cora is the smart one, Dora is the dumb one and you think you got the Bends in Death Valley. How am I doing so far? To answer your question to me, I think you might want to try getting out a little bit more. You know, mingle with your neighbors, walk around the block, and take Tai Chi, Yoga or Line dancing class. Maybe visit the Fitness Center or the pool instead of napping the days away. Try it for a month and let me know how it works for you. I care. For answers to those annoying little nagging, goading, piquant, timely questions, send your emails to Dear Amy at the Mountaineer, [email protected] or write them out and leave them at the MBV office. Then look with unabated anticipation for your answers to appear in the following month’s issue. It might. Bad Boys, Bad Boys! Peggy Malsom They say good girls like bad boys. There may be some truth to that. Just think back to Marlon Brando in his leather jacket, Mick and Keith of the Rolling Stones or any heavy-metal rocker for that matter. Bad to the Bone – every one of them. Remember when there was a goodytwo-shoes Pat Boone faction versus a hip-gyrating Elvis Presley faction? Even the churches got involved condemning and burning records. As for today’s new crop of bad boys vs. good guys, just ask yourself who is more interesting; Justin Bieber or Johnny Depp? Bad boys, bad boys, what ‘ya gonna do? Every now and then a bad boy will surprise you. It happened to me. We recently took a trip to see our daughter Crystal in New Jersey. She is an animal lover who grew up with dogs, rabbits, hamsters and fish. So it was no surprise when she adopted a dog of her own. The surprise was that Brody, our new grand dog, was part pit bull. Oh my, bad reputation = bad dog. This trip was our second time meeting Brody. The first time I tried to keep my distance, but once I fell asleep on the sofa and when I woke up he was sleeping beside me with his leg stretching protectively across me. Dennis took our picture. It is quite touching. Brody adores Crystal and visibly grieves when she is deployed with the Air Force. Crystal has room mates who care for him while she is gone. A picture taken during a recent deployment (her seventh) shows Brody with a sad look on his face using one of her boots as his pillow. It’s enough to melt your heart. Still I’m leery of his bad dog reputation. Not his in particular, but the breed’s in general. As I recently walked up the sidewalk weighted down with both suitcases (where was Dennis?) I hesitated at the bottom step. Brody bounded out of the house, stopped on the top step, looked me straight in the eye, leaned over and kissed me smack on the lips. I was so shocked I dropped the bags as he leapt off the porch to greet Dennis. Bad boys, bad boys, what ‘ya gonna do? He still scares me a little (a lot) when he barks. The rest of the time he is strong and gentle and loving. He doesn’t yip or snip or jump on you which is frankly more than can be said about Mick Jagger or Charlie Sheen. Bad boys, what ‘ya gonna do? We all follow the stop sign law 7 July, 2012 HE DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH 1. The coldest temperature recorded in Arizona was 40 degrees below zero at Hawley Lake on January 7, 1971. 2. A team of volunteers is needed to be trained on the wonderful sound and lighting system available in our Superstition Building. Morning Coffee and News, Board Mtgs., Happy Hour, Bingo and the many activities that occur throughout the year. If you belong to a group that depends on these services please help us find volunteers. We will be glad to train you and you can tell us when you are available to assist. Contact Rick Peters to set up a training time. 480-671-1680. Thank you for your help. Like a Kymoto Dragon Betty Fitzgibbons Bob saw the striped tail sticking out behind our deck box and thought at first that it was a snake, Bob came in and got the camera and slid out the deck box and discovered that it was a Gila Monster. We knew they were poisonous and couldn't let the dog out in the back anymoe until it left. It seemed to enjoy our little backyard as it wandered around the rocks and shrubs for several days then disapeared. It walked like a Kymoto Dragon. 9 July, 2012 Artist of the Month Carl Kuehn This year is the year for the World Summer Olympics to take place in London, England. Athletes from all over the world will participate for their respective countries in many different athletic events. This brings to mind the fact that the Summer Olympics have been in the United States on two occasions; the summer of 1932 and the summer of 1984. Both were in Los Angeles, California, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. When a location is decided upon for the Summer Games, the country, state and city are notified approximately eight years in advance. This is when all the preparations begin. Prior to the start of the events, admission tickets are available only on a drawing basis. Anyone can submit for their desired events along with payment for same. I submitted for three events in track and field for four people each and one set of tickets for the closing event in the Coliseum. Other events like boxing, wrestling, shooting, basketball and many others were held at their respective venues away from the Coliseum and from downtown L.A The Olympic experience for me was that as a sergeant in the L.A. Police Department, I was assigned approximately one year prior to the Olympics to assist in training of officers to be prepared to avoid a blood bath like what happened in Germany during the ’72 Olympics. In L.A., the athletes were assigned to two venues for their living, sleeping and dining. One was at the University Of Southern California (USC) and the other was at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). We were the CAT (Counter Assault Teams) assigned to both venues. A 10’ chain link fence was erected around both venues where the athletes were staying and once they started arriving we worked 12 hours a day, 6 pm - 6am. Our presence was kept low key as not to excite the world athletes, we didn’t wear uniforms but we wore dark fatigues for low coverage. I did have one day off a week and this gave me the opportunity to take my wife, kids and friends to the games in the Coliseum. Thankfully we had no attacks at either venue and the games were a wonderful event and virtually loved by all. This, by the way, was the only Olympic Games, worldwide, to make a profit. As you can see, I have a very special interest in the Olympics, I am not an artist, I would say I am a collector and I have put together a display of various souvenirs from the Olympics which will be on display this summer in the MountainBrook Village library. When I was at the Olympics, I enjoyed collecting souvenirs from the various locations such as the city of L.A., the Coliseum, the athletes and other venues. I hope you enjoy what I’m displaying and that it helps your spirits for the games this summer in London. Author of the Month William Kollar MountainBrook resident, William Kollar, is the author of “The Last Mission”. This is the incredibly fascinating story of his freedom walk over hundreds of miles while eluding the enemy for over one month during World War II. William Kollar received the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign ribbons and Korean War service medal. He was a gunner in an Army bomber when his plane was shot down. William’s book is in our own MountainBrook library, in the biography section, come and check it out. He currently lives in MountainBrook with his wife Polly and they are collectors of antiques. July, 2012 10 It was a memorable party, starting with the flags lining MBV Drive and then free popcorn and cotton candy, face painting and arcade games for all. Everyone enjoyed the patriotic songs with our favorite DJ, Ron Howard. It was a fried chicken picnic and ice cream sundaes and finally some fun dancing. The party was a big hit. 11 July, 2012 Village Events July 15 - August 31, 2012 Most of the events will go on sale one month prior to the event. On October 10,2012, Char Peterson will lead a discussion on the book “Da Vinci’s Ghost” by Toby Lester. A story of a genius, obsession, and how Leonardo created the world in his own image. More than 500 years after da Vinci inked the figure 13x9 of Mona Lisa this image is world famous. Much of da Vinci’s life is undocumented so this author filled in the blanks based on circumstantial evidence and some educated guesses. It is a 5 star book. On November 14, 2012, Carl Scheie will lead the discussion on the book “In the Garden of the Beast” by Eric Larsen. Set in Berlin in 1933 when President Roosevelt named a mild mannered professor William Dodd to be ambassador to Nazi Germany. His daughter, Martha, an indiscriminate flirt and romantic young woman who learns about terror. Full of suspense and tension. Best seller. Books being considered for December 12th are either "Killing Lincoln, the Shocking Assasination that Changed America Forever” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard or the book "The Lone Wolf" by Jodi Picoult. On October 10th it will be determined which book it will be discussed. On January 9, 2012, Stanley York will lead a discussion on author James Patterson and his books. Patterson is a great mystery writer and you will find many of his books in your MBV library. During the summer months, there will be a review in the Mountaineer of his books. It is not necessary to have read the book nor vital to participate. You are invited to walk in and enjoy a lively discussion. There is no signed membership, just enjoy a good discussion. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY Nancy Bozek You will see a change in the DVD section of your library. A long table has been ordered and we expect delivery very soon. The new table will benefit our residents who use their laptops in the library. The table is designed to accommodate 6 residents. You will also notice a smaller table placed under the window and that will be for library volunteers exclusively. If you take out a DVD and find that there is a problem with it, please return it to the library with a note attached so that we can take care of the problem. We appreciate your help.Stay cool visit your library. July, 2012 A Library Volunteer Char Peterson Your MBV library has a large selection of donated DVD and VHS tapes for your viewing. Paul Cechovic is a library volunteer who makes a list of media material for our library. Paul has made a numerical and alphabetized list of all our donated tapes. The list is located in a book located in the rear media room of your library. Paul also makes a list of all audio books and this book is located in a rack on the side wall next to the audio book shelves. Please continue to donate these items by placing them in the donation box. Paul will do all the work for you by updating these lists. Thanks Paul Summer Book Suggestions This past year, suggestions were made by residents for “good summertime reading”. Some of these books are being selected for review by MBV Book Discussion Group. During the summertime I will review 2 books each month. Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. Edward Sarren age 23,lived in Thailand 5 years after argument with his father. Younger sister Cara age 17, lives with their father, an animal conservationist who lived with wolf pack in Canadian wild. Father becomes seriously ill and on life support. The dilemma is to terminate the father’s life support and donate his organs the question is between medical science and moral choices. Worst Case by James Patterson. A great mystery writer and a great mystery. The son of New York wealthy family is kidnapped and no ransom but only quiz hostage where the money comes from. Detective Michael Bennett and FBI working the case. PINOCHLE opportunities to play organized pinochle. Each group meets in the card friendly Sunset Room. Women meet each Tuesday at 1 pm. A double deck group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 pm. And the traditional pass-three-cards group meets each Thursday at 7 pm. Only two players among the Thursday group had scores of 600+ in the last month. Howie Gehman, with 650 and 615, was one. Roger Wilson, with 624, was the other one. A double run, the rarest hand in pinochle, was held by Calder Nolan with help from partner Jeanne Isaak. Here is a brief semi-annual report. Twelve different players have achieved 600+ scores in the first six months. The highest score, 698, was earned by Ken Amundsen. Each group welcomes newcomers. No advance signup is necessary. Just show up by about ten minutes before the scheduled start of play. That helps with setup. You will find cordial folks who will help you cope with our style of play. July, 2012 Helping Hands and You Loretta Milton Helping Hands is a network of dedicated volunteers in MountainBrook Village. Our purpose is to help provide, through volunteer effort, short-term support for home bound residents. In particular, those folks who have no one at home to help, no family nearby or only a small network of older friends who might be able to help When all else fails, Helping Hands tries to be available to the above while searching for a more permanent means of being able to maintain a quality of life within the home. Transportation Assistance provides transportation to doctors, dentists, pharmacies or grocery shopping. Shopping Assistance is designed to help you with grocery shopping at Basha’s or picking up prescriptions at Walgreens or Basha’s. Home Assistance 16 is to provide you with some “friendly visiting” by a volunteer or to sit with a spouse so he or she can run errands.
