On Tuesday, March 1, 2011 the annual election will take place in MBV. On Wednesday, March 2, 2011 the outcome
of the March 1st vote will be announced. There are five candidates running for four positions. Two candidates are
incumbents and the other three are first-time candidates. Board members write policy for the village and vote on all
major monetary expenditures. Now is the time to review and decide who will hold the future plans of MBV in their

If you are looking for a new sports bar
with "good food, good service," where you
will be "treated like you are coming into
our house," then your wait is almost over.
Jack and Cherie Frost believe these are the
ingredients for success at their new
Fairway Grille restaurant opening soon in
Gold Canyon Village on Highway 60.
When Joan Archer and I recently visited
with Jack and Cherie, the restaurant was
well under way to meet the Febraury 1 soft
opening and the tentative March 1 Grand
Opening. The only thing keeping the dates
tentative is the all-important liquor license.
Jack and his partner Dave Burden are
working on it and will announce the dates,
as you won't want to miss them.
The first thing you are going to notice
are the large, wooden, double entry doors
which open into the bar. It wasn't hard to
share Jack's enthusiasm as he described the
upscale casual decor featuring a beautiful
custom handmade bar already in place, a
dropped wood beamed ceiling, wood floor,
and high tables with oak chairs from which
to view the three 55" HD TVs and six 42"
HD TVs, all top of the line, of course. The
bar menu will feature the same food as the
dining room and 16 draft beers.
The adjoining dining room will be
purposely quieter with carpeting, lower
solid oak tables, padded swivel oak chairs
and only two televisions kept at a lower

and compare. Please make sure you attend
one of the two Candidate Forums so you
can make up your mind who is the best
candidate to represent you in the next two
years.
CLARIFICATION
A request for an absentee ballot,
for the 2011 Election to the Board of
Directors, is in your election packet as
well as in the Activity office. Upon
office receipt of the request the
actual ballots will be mailed
out on February 3rd.

Aerobics for the Mind
Mary Peters
Aerobics for the Mind is a once a
month lecture series. It is held in the
Sunset Room from 10-11:30am on the
first Saturday of the month. Watch for
posters and announcements at Tuesday
coffee for exceptions to the rule and
information about the speakers . Our
lectures are scheduled for February 5th,
March 5th and April 2nd. Please join us.

Many of you are back from spending the Holidays with family and ready to settle in
and enjoy the warm Arizona sun. Just think! You won't have to plan a trip to some
place warm! You're already here! So, here are some fun ideas to add to your calendar.
Most of you already know about the MBV Follies on January 14th and 15th. Plan on
spending a fun evening being entertained by your friends and neighbors in the
Superstition Center. This is a lot of entertainment for only $5.00/person. The doors
open at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are available at the Activity
Office.
January 20th, Thursday night, party with Rick Silva and The Colorado Connection.
They perform solos, duets and plenty of music to dance to--Come, listen and dance.
Bring your own beverage, enjoy social time from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm, then listen or
dance from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets are $10.00/person and available at the
Activity Office.
Turn the page to February. Make a date with your sweetheart to attend Rebecca
Dawn Live from Branson on February 3, 2011 at 7pm in the Superstition center.
Tickets are only $10. Don’t forget a special Valentine's Dinner Dance on Friday,
February 11th. Social is at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:00 pm, dance from 7:00 pm until 10:00
pm to the Swing Memories. Tickets are $20.00/person and available at the Activity

How do we get rid of our weeds? Don't
give them a chance to grow. Thousands of
dormant weed seeds scattered throughout
your landscape, lie in wait for rains. Once
the rains start the seeds sprout and grow.
Applications of weed preventers will kill
the weed seeds as they germinate. This
prevents your landscape from becoming
one big weed patch. Believe it or not the
best place to go for your weed preventers is
your local Home Depot. There are both
pre and post emergent’s.
First let’s talk about “Post-emergent”
weed killers. Post emergent chemicals
work to control weeds after they have
already emerged and there are some
differences in chemicals you should use
depending on the season. Round Up is a
great post emergent chemical for late
spring, summer and early fall. How ever it
does not work as well in the winter months
and it all has to do with temperatures.
When temperatures drop below 70 degrees
Round Up's effectiveness really slows
down. There are other brands of chemicals
that can be used in the spring, summer and
fall months that will work just as well as
Round Up and they might even be lower
priced. The trick is to read the label and
look for the active ingredient “Glyphosate”
and compare the percentage of
concentration. Round Up or other chemical
brands containing Gyphosate are absorbed

On November 10, 2010, the
MountainBrook Village Marines
celebrated along with Marines all over
the world. It was the 235 birthday of the
Marine Corps. A potluck dinner was held
in the Ocotillo Room. Wayne Stewart
read the message from the commandant
of the Marine Corps, General James F.
Amos. Deacon Bill Jones gave a prayer
before dinner and each marine present
had a chance to give a brief comment
about their service. The event closed with
the singing of the Marine Corps hymn
and a specially decorated Marine Corps
cake.

weed killers that work best for
winter weeds are more of a
topical killer. They are not
absorbed into the plant and
taken into the rooting system
rather they suffocate or burn the
plant. The active ingredient that
you should look for on the label
is “Diquat” and again look at the
percentage of concentration.
Remember to always follow
label directions.
Now let’s discuss the most effective way
to control weeds “Pre-emergent” weed
killers. Pre emergent chemicals work to
control weeds before they emerge (begin
growing). They lay down a chemical
barrier over the soil which either prevents
weed seeds from germinating, or kills them
shortly after they do. Lots of people don't
use pre-emergent weed killers because they
can't actually see the benefit of their
efforts. Weeds are not there at the time of
treatment, and they never show up later. It's
much more rewarding to squirt a weed and
watch it die a slow and agonizing death.
The truth is it's much more effective to
never see them grow in the first place.
That's the benefit of pre-emergent weed
killers. When shopping for pre-emergent
weed killers look for names like Weed
Stopper, Weed and Grass Preventer, and
Weed Preventer. These are brand names.
The actual chemical name is listed on the
front label under active ingredients that
work well are “Oryzalin”, “Pendamethalin”
and “Prodiamine”. Although brand names

will narrow your search, always purchase
on the basis of the products chemical.
Always follow label directions when
applying weed killers. To be effective, preemergent weed killers must be applied at
the recommended rates and should be
applied every 6 months. They also should
be applied as evenly and uniformly as
possible and should be watered in
following label directions. The best time to
apply pre-emergent is in the months of
December, January and in July, August.
Missed spots or areas where too little is
applied will result in poor weed control.
Over applied areas can result in damage to
surrounding landscape plants. A factor
limiting uniformity of application is the
garden sprayer. Nozzles are not designed
for application to flat surfaces. You may
wish to have a commercial landscape
maintenance company make the
application for you. They have specialized
spray equipment and the materials
necessary to do a top notch job.

A neighbor mentioned to me this
month that she has used Urgent Care on
Kings Ranch Road many times in the
past year. I have found it to be
convenient the few times my husband
and I have needed medical attention.
Some of the new residents in
MountainBrook may not be aware of
their services and are going miles west of
here.
It is important to support our local
businesses and I hope some of us are
making an effort. It looks like we will be
getting another restaurant in January!
I would like to bring the new and old

residents up to date about our Volunteer
Organization that was established in
2001. Helping Hands is a network of
community volunteers whose purpose is
to provide, short-term support for home
bound residents, recuperating patients
from hospitalizations and particularly
those folks who have no one at home to
help them, or family nearby. We can
provide transportation for follow up
medical appointments and trips to
Basha's or Walgreens. We have
established a medical and child
equipment loan service.

a friendly visit from one of our wonderful
volunteers or any of the above; please

Village Concert Band
On January 30, 2011, at 3pm in the
Superstition Center, come hear the
sounds of our Village Band in their
Winter Concert under the direction of
Mr. Gary Binder. Tickets will be on sale
in the Activity Office for $5 and may
also be purchased at the door.
Enjoy marches, The Grand Canyon
Overture, and comedy classics from the
50’s. Also included are selections from
The Music Man and the John Williams
Trilogy including Jurassic Park and The
Theme from Schindler’s List. As always,
we will play our own Mountain Brook
Village March written for us by our
principal Saxophonist, Donn Modlin.

offset room arrangement gives a separate
but not excluded feeling to the dining area
that will be appreciated by many diners.
The hours are 11:00 am to 11:00 pm
with lunch as well as dinner being served.
The menu was given much careful thought.
It was developed by Jack, Dave, and their
cooks who have a total of 45 years of
restaurant kitchen experience, plus their
vendors. Diners have a wide choice of
menu items including fish and chips, crab
stuffed mushrooms, broasted chicken,
flounder stuffed with crab, steaks and more.
An average meal will cost $7.00-$25.00.
Previously Jack ran a bar in Boston while
his partner Dave ran a restaurant for fifteen
years. The combined dining room and bar
have seating capacity for 100 people. They
will also feature a take-out booth with a
separate entrance. Later on catering will be
available, but not immediately.
When asked what inspired him to open a
restaurant in Gold Canyon, Jack answered
that he bought the land and built Gold
Canyon Village shopping center in March
2007. He has been trying to get someone to
open an upscale sports bar here ever since.
That hasn't happened mainly due to the
downturn in the economy so he decided to
do it himself. He hopes to attract more
people to the shopping center as he believes
Highway 60 will be the Main Street for
Gold Canyon. He states that 55,000 cars
pass by daily. He wants to bring some of
those people in. Jack
will not be an absentee
owner. He and Cherie
have lived in Gold
Canyon for ten years.
His partner Dave will
be the GM for Fairway
Grille. They will be
employing around thirty
local people and believe
they will be one of the
Jack and Cherie Frost
largest employers in Gold Canyon.
Jack would love to attract a hardware
store to GCV shopping center. He also
envisions a golf cart sales and service
shop. He now sees golf carts being
trucked in and out. He is willing to
help someone who is interested in such
a proposition get started. Interested?

The Superstition Mountain Quilters, located in MountainBrook Village, have been very
busy this year making beautiful quilts to be donated to our local charities in Apache
Junction. We have made 57 quilts in all and also made some pillowcases. Next year the
plan is to make more pillowcases for donation. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday here
at MountainBrook, so come join us and make a difference in someone's life.

Andrea’s Closet was founded by Kenny
and Traci Brunk after they lost their nine
year old daughter, Andrea, to leukemia in
January of 2002. During the time Andrea
was hospitalized, she was given a toy from
a special closet whenever she had a surgery
or a procedure. This small act of choosing a
toy did wonders to comfort her and raise
her spirits. Andrea’s Closet is a part of
many hospitals in Arizona. Our donations
will go to the Gilbert Mercy Hospital’s
“Andrea’s Closet”.
Your MBV Library will collect your
donations during the month of February. A
collection box will be placed in the
office/library area OR you can bring the toy
to “Coffee and News” any Tuesday in

be new due to the compromised immune
systems of these little patients.

On December 8, 2010 the
Waterlilies celebrated the holiday
season with a Christmas luncheon. The
Waterlilies are the 9 am water aerobic
exercise group. A variety of salads and
desserts were the fare. The ladies came
with toys and canned goods to be
donated to Project Help located in
Apache Junction.
A special thanks to Sharon
Schneider for leading the Christmas
Carols. Merry Christmas and a happy
healthy New Year to all from the
Waterlilies.
The Gift of Music
On Friday, December 3rd and
Saturday December 4th, we were all
given a gift of music. The Christmas
Concert put on by the Village Voices
“Light up the Tree” was full of our
favorite Christmas music and helped to
put us in the mood. Thanks for the gift.

Look Who’s Here…
Carol Dage
Meet Dennis and Peggy Malsom,
formerly of Lake Stevens, Washington,
now living at 7319 Texas Ebony in
MountainBrook Village. Dennis retired
from the Air Force in 1988 and worked
for the Boeing Company until he retired
in 2004. Peggy enjoyed teaching classes
in Middle School in Alaska, Idaho and
Washington for 15 years.
Dennis and Peggy attended the same
high school in Nampa, Idaho, where
they were acquaintances. They each
married other mates, raised families and
traveled with the military. Thirty years
later, thanks to a class reunion, they met
again. Dennis had lost his mate and
Peggy also was single. Peggy was on
the reunion committee but Dennis’
brother had to talk him into attending
the party. It was fortunate that he did
because Dennis and Peggy became
reacquainted during the party and spent
most of the evening talking and
discovering that their pasts were quite
similar. They had each traveled with the
military, had visited many of the same
places and understood military lingo. A

courtship followed the reunion.
After their marriage they became avid
RVers and spent two summers
volunteering as tour directors at Boyce
Thompson Arboretum. They met some
MountainBrook residents while staying
there and were invited to several
MountainBrook events. When they
decided they would like to buy a home
in Arizona, they remembered the
friendliness they had found in
MountainBrook and wanted to become
part of our community. They moved
into their home in October.
The Malsoms are currently getting
to know their neighbors and enjoying
new activities. Peggy has taken a
writing course with Barb Hofmeister,
and is now assisting her with the 2010
Follies. Peggy is also the latest member
of the Mountaineer staff, where each
month you will be able to enjoy one of
her fine articles. Dennis is playing golf,
volunteering at food banks and has
become a driver for Helping Hands.
They each rate volunteerism very
high in their lives. In the summer they
will take their RV back to Washington
and do more traveling. In the meantime,
if
you come
across them in the
neighborhood, you can count on being
invited in for a glass of iced tea and
warm conversation. Welcome,
Malsoms!

If it’s Monday, He Must Be Golfing
Peggy Malsom
It is Monday and that means Dennis is on
the golf course. I have the whole day to
myself. He left early and won’t be home for
several hours yet. I love Mondays.
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy doing things
with him, but sometimes I just need this time
for other things. There are things that are
important to me that he doesn’t understand
or fully appreciate. I have a whole list of
them in my mind that I still want to do or
redo after recently moving into Mountain
Brook. For instance, the book shelves are all
wrong. When we unpacked the books were
just shelved willy nilly; the Complete Works of Shakespeare are next to a paperback by
Fannie Flagg, a first edition Wallace Stegner is beside Dr. Susan Love’s Hormone Book.
I’m not obsessive or anything, but I do need a little order to my make-shift library.
Another project I must tackle on one of his golf days is the guest bedroom closet.
Anything and everything that had no other place to go is in there. Even after a huge garage
sale, several trips to Half-Price Books, Goodwill, and the library, we (I) still have too much
stuff. You are either a stuff person or a non-stuff person. Dennis is a “non” while I am a
“stuff.” Consequently, don’t anyone attempt to open that closet door. I need about two
more golf Mondays before I can get to it.
Well, I guess my list wasn’t as long as I first thought, but besides the bookshelves and
the guest closet, the kitchen pantry isn’t set up correctly at all. What was it Scarlett O’Hara
said at the end of “Gone with the Wind”? Something like, “Tomorrow is another day.”
Well, that would be Tuesday and guess what? Dennis also golfs on Tuesdays. Hurrah!

Ladies Bridge
Ladies Bridge meets every Monday at 1:00 pm in
the Sunset Room. The first Monday of each
month is a potluck at noon. We each put in 50
cents for small money prizes. You can sign up
one week in advance, but you must get a sub if
you cannot play. Walk-ins are welcome, however
you must arrive before 1:00 pm. Monday Bridge

newcomers. High Thursday scores were

No advance signup is necessary. Just

invited. It is not a requirement to read
anything written by Emily Dickenson so
come to listen to a professional actress.

“The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay
a story set in the 30’s & 40’s in Africa.
One young boy in an Afrikaner boarding
school. (this also was a 1992 movie).
It is not necessary to have read the

On Thursday, March 3, 2011 join us in

Sunday, February 20, 2011 is the date
set for our annual Washington, Oregon and
Alaska Party in the Superstition Center.
This year instead of potluck or pizza, we
will be having it catered by Rosati’s of
Gold Canyon. The menu will include a
buffet of Lasagna, tossed salad, garlic
bread and dessert.
The party will start at 4 pm for social
time (BYOB) dinner will be served
between 4:30 pm and 5 pm. The cost is $9
per person but think of how much easier
this will be on all of you who usually do the
cooking! The $9 will include all of the food
plus paper products, tax and door prizes.
Tickets are being sold each Tuesday
morning at Coffee & News, or can also be

Learn the basics of stained glass.
Classes are once a week for six weeks.

Artist of the Month
Leonard and Barbara
Lesko
Leonard and Barbara Lesko, winter residents
in MBV, retired from Brown University in
Rhode Island. Together they have worked,
traveled, explored and published for 44 years.
Their creations include technical works like
their Dictionary of Late Egyptian, but also
popular books like their latest book Lighthouse
Life, which tells of their experiences owning a
lighthouse for 18 years. Their shared interest
in ancient Egyptian religion prompted some of
the books on display, but another concern was
the lives of real people in this ancient society.
Pharaoh’Workers and The Remarkable Women
of Ancient Egypt are examples. These books
are on display in the library during the month
of January.

The MBV Village Voices Christmas
Concert was a "glowing" success as the choir,
singing in the dark, sang "Light Up The Tree"
and, as the tree was lit, so was the stage and
the choir. We thank all of you for attending
and for your standing ovations by which you
showed your enjoyment and appreciation.
Each member of the choir, the Producer and
the Director truly enjoyed performing for you
and hope that the Christmas Concert
performance made your Christmases all the
more merry. Thank you Mary Govoni for
your continuing creativity as Producer.
Thank you Patty Sobek for your impressive
musical talents as Director. Thank you Marty
Robison for accompanying the choir with
your talent at the piano.

practice began on January 6. If you are

It’s Time for Visitors

Now that the holidays are over and
many of our friends and neighbors have
made their way back to sunny Arizona,
it's time for the start of that annual
tradition. You know it has begun when
you hear, "Hey honey, you need to clean
the house because we have family coming
to visit". I love to have family come to
visit as much as anybody, but sometimes
trying to keep them entertained is a pain
in the back-side. Many of our families
have been to the Valley of the Sun

numerous times and have had their share
of Organ Stop Pizza, burgers at Tortilla
Flats and hiking up to see Weavers
Needle. Good luck with getting 21 and 24
year old grandchildren to play Mexican
Train on a Friday night. One solution to
this problem is, after spending the daylight hours playing golf or sitting by the
pool, let them head to downtown Phoenix
to enjoy the sights.

Phoenix has to offer is just a click away at

visitors with a thirst for the nightlife, can

Having family visit is something we all
enjoy, but give them a break from
Grandma and Grandpa and let them enjoy
the beautiful city of Phoenix while on
their vacation. It also gives us a break
from having to think of ways to entertain
them while they visit. As always, be sure

The Hike at First Water Creek

The MBV hiking group meets every Friday at 8:00 AM in
the parking lot in front of the Ocotillo Room. We then
carpool to that week's trail head and walk for about two and a
half hours. Followed by lunch at one of our favorite Mexican
restaurants.

2011 CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHIES
JACQUELINE (JACKIE)
GATEWOOD
Life has an interesting way of taking
twists and turns, and that is certainly true
in my case. When I moved to
MountainBrook Village, I had not planned
to get so involved in the volunteer aspects
of this wonderful community. However, I
was elected to the Board of Directors in
March 2009 and I am currently serving as
the first woman President of the MBV
Board of Directors.
I am originally from Michigan where I
completed a master's degree in education
and a doctorate in clinical psychology. I
have been involved in the mental health
field and in the education field since the
1960's. Prior to moving to Arizona I
taught at a graduate university in Virginia
and I am currently teaching part time for
the University of Phoenix in the master's
program in psychology.
While in Virginia I was involved in the
Homeowner's Association serving on the
architectural committee.
My tenure on the MBV Board of
Directors has been a very interesting and
rewarding experience. With the diverse
population here, it is a challenge to
provide the scope of activities that meets
the needs of the residents while
maintaining financial responsibility.
Among my goals for the future of MBV
is to strive for increased volunteerism and
greater community involvement. As my
Grandmother always said, "Many hands
make work light."
Since becoming president last March, I
have appointed five ad hoc committees to
explore various community issues and
make recommendation to the Board.
These committees have been comprised of
members with divergent opinions and
ideas who have worked together to
recommend the best course of
action/solutions for the majority of
homeowners.
Additionally, maintaining fiscal
responsibility is a prominent goal. MBV
is in sound financial condition with the
reserves being at an all time high. This is
the result of a forward looking Board over
the past few years who have been
committed to their fiduciary role.
The coming year should prove to be
very interesting and exciting. I look
forward to serving in this leadership role
and will strive to keep MBV a viable and
desirable community.

JOSEPH A. JURESICH
My wife Jan and I have lived in
MountainBrook Village since October
1993 and are now in our second home. I
retired as Print Manager from the Detroit
Newspaper Agency in 1992 after a 38
year career. I managed two departments
and had a annual budget of
$13,000,000.00 not including paper and
ink.
Prior to my present term on the Board
of Directors I served on the Building and
Grounds Committee for the past two years
concentrating on water conservation.
I want to see that MountainBrook
Village continues to be the great place to
live that it presently is by maintaining the
facilities while seeking cost savings in
order to keep the homeowners fees as low
as possible.
AL LEHMAN
My wife and I have lived in the Valley
since 1965. I was a small business owner
for 33 years before retiring in 1997. We
also owned and managed residential and
commercial real estate properties. We
have lived at MountainBrook Village for
over three years.
I would like to see MountainBrook
Village continue to be managed
conservatively and continue to improve
upon and add to the facilities. I would like
to see more residents participate in the
present activities and to see additional
activities and facilities as may be desired
by the residents.
ROBERT M. MEINECKE
I served seven years in the US Navy
where I received training in electronics
and nuclear engineering. My last
assignment was a nuclear powered
destroyer in the construction phase and
later as a member of the commissioning
crew. Most of my private industry
experience was with GTE (Verizon)
holding a variety of positions in
operations, marketing and sales. I retired
as Director of National Accounts
Marketing and Sales.

My wife, Carol, and I also owned and
operated two small businesses. Carol and
I moved from California to
MountainBrook Village in January of
1995. We both enjoy the active adult
lifestyle and I believe this "active"
lifestyle must be supported and protected
into the future of our community. As a
board member I would strive to represent
and serve the residents of MountainBrook
Village with openness, honesty and
integrity.
lived in Arizona since 1960. I have seen
huge changes in that time. I have enjoyed
living in MountainBrook Village for the
last 16 years as a full time resident. Some
of those years I was still working but in
recent years I have been active in many
community events, classes and the use of
the recreational facilities. I am on the
Library Committee and served as
chairman of "Andrea's Closet" annual toy
drive for the past 3 years. I have also
volunteered my time to many of our
community events. I was active with other
MBV residents in working against
MountainBrook Drive being extended to
the neighboring community.
I am a retired educator. I received my
BA from Arizona State University and my
Masters from Northern Arizona
University. I worked in Gilbert school
district for 26 years. I was awarded
Educator of the Year for the Town of
Gilbert and the Gilbert School District in
1999. I chaired many committees both at
the school and district level. After
retirement, I organized and implemented
a diversity program in which 3500
employees were trained. I also mentored
new teachers for 4 years. I have always
been active in my community working
with the Girl Scouts, church and action
committees regarding school issues.
I am running for the board because I
want to make a contribution to my
community. I feel I am an open-minded
person and will be a good listener. I
believe communication between the board
and the residents is very important. I will
work to continue to preserve the beauty
and quality of life in MBV while guarding
against unnecessary expenditures.

We are so fortunate to live in such a
picturesque setting as MountainBrook
Village. Our village represents a vibrant
and caring community where we can
make new friends, enjoy many activities
or just relax if we want. Preserving our
association is critically tied to preserving
our quality of life here in MountainBrook
Village.
