Each person’s role is crucial because of course, without an audience, there is no performer! Yet, it baffles Jolán and I to hear countless times how some people wish to be active participants in the parade but do not know how to get there. How did the people who participated in the parade get to be involved in the production? Was it luck? Did the organizers go find them and drag them there? The answer is simple: It took years of crafting the performers’ particular gift or skill, whether it is as an acrobat, a juggler, a dancer or a musician. If you want to participate actively, you must make the conscious decision to invest in yourself. By joining our KoSA programs around the world, you have made the decision to empower yourself with knowledge. Knowledge is the greatest weapon you can own to achieve your goals. But it does not end there, you then have to make the conscious decision to showcase those skills that was worked on for years with such dedication and passion by learning to promote yourself, by tirelessly going after opportunities, by sometimes creating your own opportunities. Everything is possible. Focus, work hard, and take your dreams where you want it to go. The time is NOW… do not think you will have more time later. It is never too early and never too late. The time is NOW: Drum! The 19th KoSA International Drum Camp and Festival celebrated its annual week of intensive learning, living and playing with internationally celebrated drum & percussion masters. Held in the serene green mountains of Vermont this past July, KoSA Co-Founders and Directors, Aldo Mazza and his wife Dr. Jolán Kovács relayed a simple message to all attendees with this year’s theme: “I just wanna drum!” This heartfelt and straightforward sentiment expressed to all the urgency to do what makes you happy in life. “Fulfill your lifelong dream and drum! You will have no regrets and will ultimately be living a happier and more productive life!” Mazza and Kovács advised. And this is just what the participants did at KoSA morning, noon and night Regardless of the wideranging ages, from as young as 8 to experienced players of 70 years and more, attendees bonded quickly like intimate family members each bringing their personal experience from such home towns as Nashville, Tennessee, to the FrenchCanadian drumming passions of Montreal, Quebec and even as far as Milan, Italy to name but a few places. 006 Brian Jones, a first-time attendee from New York City, was clearly blown away from his experience as he stated: “I now have a clear understanding why both Faculty and students [seek to] return every year. The level of instruction surpassed anything I was expecting.” John Swiess from Illinois-who attended KoSA for the first time as well thanks to the generosity of his wife’s Christmas gift claimed: “I will never be the same. A life changing event.” The love of the annual KoSA workshop is not only expressed by the participants but clearly by the Faculty as well! Marcus Santos, KoSA Faculty alumni fittingly summarized this year’s experience: “KoSA is responsible for the best moments of my life in music and as a person”. The nightly concerts of the KoSA Music Festival were streamed live again this year in collaboration with the Drum Channel (www.drumchannel.com). Approximately 20,000+ viewers from around the world witnessed the mind-blowing performances of KoSA’s stellar faculty which included: Robby Ameen (Dizzy Gillespie), Sergio Bellotti (Berklee College), Chris Coleman (Prince), Dominick Cuccia (Fife and Drum Corp Master), Mario DeCiutiis (KAT Electronics founder, Radio City Music Hall Orchestra), Frank Epstein (Boston Symphony Orchestra), Dom Famularo (drumming’s Global Ambassador), Richie Gajate Garcia (Phil Collins), Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon), Jojo Mayer (NERVE), Aldo Mazza (Repercussion/KoSA Artistic Director & Founder), Allan Molnar (Nelly Furtado), John Riley (Miles Davis), Marcus Santos (Brazilian master/Berklee College Instructor, Grooversity Founder), Jeff Salisbury (University of Vermont, Author), and Michael Wimberly (NYC Percussionist & West African Drumming Master). The nightly performances also featured smoking hot performances from the two NYC session players who make up KoSA’s Master Rhythm Section: Irio O’Farrill on bass, and Bob Quaranta on piano. New this year was an outdoor concert at Castleton State College’s new Pavilion outdoor venue, attended by several hundred members of the surrounding community. Continuing a long-standing tradition, KoSA awarded “Lifetime Achievement” awards this year to two very deserving members of KoSA’s Artist Faculty: the immensely gifted KoSA Faculty alumnus Richie Gajate Garcia, as well as the intellectually intense, ever-inspiring Jojo Mayer, a first-time KoSA Faculty member, who was completely surprised to receive such an accolade. Two newly established awards, KoSA’s “Recognition Award” were also presented to KoSA Faculty alums Jeff Salisbury and Sergio Bellotti in acknowledgement of their tireless efforts in promoting music education and for being dedicated ambassadors of the ongoing KoSA mission. Finally, the annual KoSA Auction, was a huge success, due to the overwhelming generosity of participants who came away with wonderful, hand signed instruments to benefit KoSA Scholarship programs. 007 THE DRUM CAMP GUEST ARTIST FACULTY 2015 DENNIS CHAMBERS JOHN BLACKWELL GLEN VELEZ MARIO DECIUTIIS ALLAN MOLNAR JULIE SPENCER Drumset DRUMSET FRAME DRUMS ELECTRONIC PERCUSSION & MALLETS MUSIC TECHNOLOGY, JAZZ VIBES & VIDEO CONFERENCING Marimba (Santana, John Scofield , Mike Stern and many others ) (Prince, Patti Labellle, Justin Timberlake, Cameo and many others) (Paul Winter Consort, Steve Reich, Pat Metheny and many others) (KAT electronics, Radio City Music Hall) (Lehman College) (international soloist and composer) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS MARCUS SANTOS FRANCESCO BECCARO BOB QUARANTA VALERIE NARANJO TRACY THORNTON SCOTT SWIMMER Brazilian percussion KOSA RHYTHM SECTION - BASS KOSA RHYTHM SECTION - PIANO WEST AFRICAN KEYBOARD PERCUSSION STEEL PAN Community drumming (Grooversity, Paquito D’Rivera and the Gypsy Kings) (thecollective, Victor Wooten and many others) (thecollective, John Scofield and many others) (Saturday Night Live, Tori Amos, Airto Moreira and many more) (Pan Rocks) (DRUMSTRONG) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS 008 INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS 009 MASSIMO CUSATO DOM FAMULARO ALDO MAZZA SOUTH ITALIAN TAMBURELLO DRUMSET World Percussion/ Hybrids & Drumset (KoSA Co-Founder/Artistic Director and Repercussion) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS MICHAEL WIMBERLY WILLIAM ARMANDO RODRIGUEZ JEFF SALISBURY WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING CUBAN PERCUSSION Drumset (Mickey Hart, George Clinton and many others) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS 010 (University of Vermont, author) Subscribe downbeat.com INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS 877-904-JAZZ 651-251-9682 USA INTL JIM BAILEY DAMIEN CORNIOLA FRANK EPSTEIN EVANS HEADS TUNING SPECIALIST DRUMSET Classical percussion (Tektronic, GUEST artist from AUSTRALIA) (Boston Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS JAMES TAYLOR RUSS LAWTON MUSIC BUSINESS INSTITUTE DRUMSET (Phish’s Trey Anastasio) INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS 013 DRUM PARTIES , COMPANY TEAM BUILDING, EVENTS At KoSA, we are dedicated to the power and promise of drumming and percussion. The 2014 KoSA China event now in its fifth year was a smashing success. The event kicked off with the band competition for kids of all ages studying at 9 Beats. KoSA China is produced in close collaboration with 9 Beats Music Education School, directed and founded by Mr. Li Hongyu. 9 Beats has 200 school locations throughout China. Aldo Mazza (Co-founder of KoSA with his wife Dr. Jolán Kovács) was a member of the judging pane alongside fellow percussion and drum set artists including: Lucas Van Merwijk (Holland), Alexandre Cunha (Brazil), Chris Trzcinski (China), Rick Latham (USA), Nicholas McBride (Australia) and Dom Famularo (USA). The panel had the difficult task of selecting the best band from an array of talented and energetic performers! on traditional Cuban rhythms and their application on the drum set. Other classes concentrated on teaching 9 Beats students from all over China ( a total of 400 participants this year) to study drum set and percussion. Additional classes were given by Greg Irwin (USA) who wowed the students with his incredible finger exercise techniques. Rick Latham (USA) offered an in-depth presentation to the teachers on funk drumming. Rock drummer Mike Terrana gave some highly musical and technical concerts and masterclasses. Conga legend, Raul Rekow (Santana) gave classes and a performance on Latin music, rhythms and techniques. Other classes and performances were given by equally extraordinary artists such as: Simone Sou, Alexandre Cunha, Mousses Mbaye, Sam Debell, Isumi, Chris Trzinski, Dom Famularo and many well known Following the competition, the week started Chinese artists. up with an electric performance by the highly energetic percussion group from Holland, Drums The week ended for all with the Grand Finale United. A jam packed schedule of classes and Faculty Concert lead by Aldo Mazza. The concert back-to-back teacher training seminars were featured Drums United, motivational drummer given by the stellar faculty. Aldo Mazza gave an Dom Famularo, Wilson Zhang, and Alexandre engaging seminar to 9 Beats teachers focusing Cunha. 016 SO WHAT? By Peter Bruce Wilder I want to talk to you about the pretty much “magical” experience KoSA participants have during the week to not only learn from, perform with and live with Guest Artist Faculty, but also to have the time to reflect on one’s personal values, goals, choices and future opportunities. Full disclosure: I am a KoSA Team Member and have been since Aldo Mazza and his wife first discussed the KoSA concept at my kitchen table-nearly 22 years ago. The KoSA program concept was always Aldo’s baby... he wanted a safe, environmentally beautiful location in which masters and students could create a percussive utopia: a program that was omnidirectional in scope and application. By this, I mean that not only do participants learn from the Guest Artist Faculty, but the Faculty also learns from the students, the students learn from other students and the Faculty learn from other Faculty. Everyone grows and in all directions. Omnidirectional. The KoSA program has been expertly facilitated over the years by Aldo’s better half, Dr. Jolán Kovács, along with their crew members and support staff, and the welcome help from Vermont’s Castleton State College staff and faculty. 018 Another full disclosure: I am not a real drummer, though often I play one on TV. I am a musician and composer, among other things, but not specifically a drummer. So, what does KoSA do for me personally? It inspires. Mostly from the privilege of experiencing iconic individuals from the drumming and percussion fields just being themselves, shields down, enjoying the opportunity to “pay it forward” by sharing their own talents, techniques, and experiences. One of many classic conversations I have had was with legends Chester Thompson and Cyro Baptista. I asked Chester (who had just come off a huge 2007 European tour with Genesis) what was the largest show of the summer. He replied “Rome. The Italians love Genesis. The concert was at Rome’s Circus Maximus and over 650,000 reportedly attended.” (For the record, that’s more than the entire population of Vermont). 019 Cyro replied, “Ah, Chester, you have me beaten... at the Simon & Garfunkle Reunion in Central Park, there was only 500,000... but don’t you think that anything over 10,000 is just a blur??” The year Neil Peart dropped by (actually drove himself down to our Vermont KoSA home in a very humble vehicle) was equally astonishing, as Neil is a very private individual. Chester laughed and agreed, “Yeah, man, that’s about right”. And when Vinnie Appice was lovingly teasing his brother Carmine in a spontaneous bit of healthy silliness by recreating Carmine’s legendary Fu Manchu moustache with electrical tape...priceless. photo: Kip Ross photo: Kip Ross photo: Kip Ross 1. Chester Thompson 2. Me The year Bernard Purdie was on faculty was astonishing. Like so many KoSA Faculty Alumni, Bernard was the artist that performed on some of my absolute favorite recordings. When he was demonstrating “moving the pocket” with only kick, snare and hi hat, it was like experiencing Leonardo Davinci describing the nature of brush strokes and the appearance of light on the Mona Lisa. It was simple, elegant and profound. 1. Cyro Baptista 2. Chester Thompson 3. KoSA Participants The point is, when you attend KoSA --- even once, you will be changed for the better from the experience. It’s a rolling, undulating, expanding and contracting heck-of-a-ride. The participants and artists form a defacto extended family and the event really feels like a family reunion, due to the event’s inclusiveness.. 1. Dr. Jolan Kovacs Mazza 2. Carmine Appice 3. Aldo Mazza My ultimate point is, when you attend KoSA, you never know what your personal, magical experience will be, but you will have it. We have participants that return year after year because they know that at KoSA, memories are made. This is not to say it is perfect, but it’s darn close. HOT KoSA Cuba held the 13th edition of its annual workshop and festival from March 1-8, 2015. Cuba--the cultural jewel of the Caribbean--was a fascinating discovery to KoSA participants coming from the USA, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and Argentina. The program’s rich itinerary did not disappoint with highly informative classes, hands-on lessons and jaw-dropping musical performances by the talented KoSA Cuba faculty. KoSA’s Director, Aldo Mazza, and the Fiesta del Tambor’s artistic director, Giraldo Piloto, welcomed the participants attending this year’s event from around the globe. The week started with a conference & introduction to Cuban music by the distinguished and renowned ethno-musicologist Dr. Olavo Alén. Dr. Olavo gave a fascinating presentation to KoSA participants on the history of 026 Cuban music, its many expressions, and the cultural meanings associated with each. Educational clinics additionally featured percussion greats like Juan Carlos Rojas “El Peje” long time drummer for Chucho Valdez, and 2010 Grammy Award winner - who gave an exciting clinic focusing on Latin Jazz drum set and also gave several private lessons. Giraldo Piloto, Cuba’s top drummer also gave a class on the development of “ timba “ style and Latin Jazz drumming in today’s music in Cuba. Also instructing was “conguero” Tomas “El Panga” Ramos, one of the top studio musicians in Cuba. Both a consummate musician and a compassionate teacher, El Panga wowed attendees with his brilliance on conga drums. The ever-smiling “El Capitan” astounded with his “Cuban Contraptione”-a unique fusion of conga drums, timbales, bongs, guiro, bells and multiple pedals, including innovative new technologies and instruments for expanding the drummers’ horizons. He put everyone through a great workout as well as teaching the class the art of “how to rehearse the section for ultimate results.” Grammy winner and drummer extraordinaire ,Terri Lyne Carrington, worked with the class on jazz concepts and musical drumming. She worked with the participants by highlighting the techniques she was taught by Allan Dawson as well as explaining the methods she has developed to perform more musically on drum set. Terri Lyne finished the classes with a rhythm section lab playing with bass player, Jaime Ousley, and pianist, Hal Roland. Par- ticipants were taught the importance of playing more musically and learning the forms and structures of music — regardless of style. True to the long standing KoSA tradition, the event closed with an unforgettable grand finale concert at Florida International University. The concert was free and open to the public and was recorded for future broadcast. This spectacular concert featured: Marcus Santos, who performed solo and with his ensemble performing some special Brazilian pieces prepared over the weekend workshop. Eriko Daimo wowed the audience with a beautiful marimba solo, followed by a piece that she prepared with her class. Aldo Mazza performed a solo work and then was joined by his class performing an arrangement of the “Abodan” rhythm of the Ivory Coast for djembes, dun duns and drum set. Terri Lyne Carrington performed several jazz works with the house band (Jaime Ously on bass and Hal Roland on piano) wowing the audience with some great intensive musical performances. Bill Bachman performed a solo on his quad setup and the class ensemble joined him for a finale piece bringing the whole event to a great finale climax. 029 TRADITIONAL CUBAN RHYTHM “CONGA COMPARSA” ADAPTATION FOR DRUMSET.
