President’s Letter
California has the craziest weather! Last week it was shorts and T-shirts and now we need rain ponchos and
heavy jackets. But this didn’t stop the Saddle & Harness members from coming out to show last week. Some members traveled through rain and snow to get to our show, then the wind, rain and hail came up. Thank you all for being
good sports and turning out for the show. A BIG thank you to the volunteers who stuck it out even though they were
not showing. I’m sure I will forget someone—so be sure to thank them for all of us! First, your show committee—
Kathy, Michelle & Debbie for setting everything up for the show, answering all your questions and manning the
tables in the freezing cold! Barbara, your membership/sponsorship person, drove through snow and sleet to come to
the show. Wendy and her group of students and kids who all helped out with setting up the timed events. Evon,
Molly and Gigi also helped set up and break down the show equipment. And, don’t forget our Judge, Bill Hartman;
announcer, Deby; gate keeper, Barbara; steward, Becky and photographer, Becky. Thank you to ALL VOLUNTEERS for making the show possible!
Despite the torrential rain, howling winds and pounding hail, I heard that Ken Shaw proudly drove his pair
of miniature donkeys in the pairs class for the first time and they showed off their new harness and cart. We had lots
of new mini’s participate and both the color and non-color classes were full. Molly Rush left her team at home and
RODE her mare to three blue ribbons. I think I even heard that Wendy Pregler rode.
As you are trying to keep your animals warm and dry over the next several weeks, take an opportunity to go
over a pre-show season safety checklist—take your tack apart and clean it thoroughly, inspecting for worn or broken
items to repair or replace. Remember Pat Gesler’s broken arm from a pair of broken reins? Empty your tack or
show box and restock items like safety pins, hair nets, polish, flyspray, etc. Do a safety inspection of your truck and
trailer (brakes, tires, bearings, lubrication, hinges & springs, releases, hooks & latches, oil change, coolant flush,
etc.). George Liblin of G&F Trailers is a member & sponsor and often runs a special on safety inspections and repairs. Make sure that your trailer contains—extra leads and halters, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, manure fork
and bucket, water buckets, etc. If you have a junior rider or
driver, or ride English , or if you are just a safe rider, check
Board of Directors:
your helmet for fit and wear. Take a close look at your
property—any repairs needed to keep things safe?

Now is also a good time to fill out your pre-entry
forms for the year. Cheryl Palladino shared one of her
secrets. At the beginning of the year she fills out one form
for each horse. Then she photocopies it to use for all the
shows in the year. Someone else has suggested printing
labels with your information—that way we can make sure
that we spell your name and your equine’s name correctly
so that your points will count toward year end awards!
Have you considered volunteering to help plan next
year’s banquet or awards? Or to organize members for a
trail or beach ride or a parade? Can you help out at any of
the shows? Volunteering is a GREAT WAY to meet LOTS
of NEW FRIENDS!
As always, be safe and have fun with your equines!

Rules
The new rules have been adopted and, hopefully, clarified, for
the 2006 show year. Copies were available at the February
show and are available to be downloaded (printed) from our
website. Please go to www.saddlenharness.org then click on
“forms.”
2.
Remember, just as with any other organization, it is your re- 3.
sponsibility to know the rules. Once again, here are a few highlights:
4.
1.
attire are required to wear ASTM/SEI approved helmets
whenever mounted or in a cart or carriage at a Saddle &
Harness Event;
Jr Drivers must have a competent adult groom (see rules);
All drivers must have a whip (see rules);
All dogs and children MUST be under control at all times.
All juniors and all English riders using traditional English There are many other important rules—this is just a sampling.
Please read the entire set of rules before the March show—they
will be strictly enforced at that show.
New Arrivals
Chanin and Jeff Smith are expecting their third daughter July
2, 2006. Congratulations Chanin, Jeff, Courtney & Cassidy!
Send us pictures of your new “filly”!
Kim and Paul Nolan welcomed Megan Leeann into the
world on February 8, 2006. Congratulations!
Surveys - here’s what we’ve heard so far
So far, we have heard that you want CLINICS—lots of driving clinics. So, we are planning 2 clinic / pot lucks for
later this year. In the meantime, please look under “other happenings” for clinics hosted by members or similar clubs,
such as Heels & Wheels.
We’ve also heard that you want beach and trail rides—more info to come on these. And, some of you want overnight
camp outs, even though these can be club functions because of our insurance. So we will let you know if any of our
members are going camping this year!
Please keep your surveys coming as it is a great way to tell us what you’d like to see the club do this year! To print a
survey, please go to our website, www.saddlenharness.org.
More Horse TV . . .
In January, Wendy Pregler told you about www.rfdtv.com
which is a fantastic Channel for all sorts of horse programming. Well, the networks are beginning to realize that we
horse people have money to spend on our “addiction.” Animal Planet is running a series called “HorsePower: The Road
to the McClay” aimed at pre-teens and teenagers infected
with Horse Madness. The McClay competition is the top
Equitation for Juniors. If you are thinking of riding English,
you might Tivo or tape a few programs just to watch the riders form.
Sheila Rappleye brought us some info from Equine Affair
on Horse TV. Apparently, if you go to www.horsetv.com,
you can register your vote (one vote per e-mail address) to
have more horse programming available in your area. Check
it out!
Finally, KVMD TV Los Angeles runs the Grand Prix from
Indio, LA, Del Mar, etc. Many times they are repeats—but
exciting nonetheless.
Junior Program
We are considering beginning a Junior Program. If you are a junior
and would like to participate, or an adult and would like to volunteer
or have ideas, please contact Peggy Hosking 951 258 7178 or Kathy
Bradigan.
Ideas include Junior contributions to the newsletter—poems, short
stories or essays, drawings or pictures; an essay contest for a savings
bond or clinic fee; and clinics designed specifically for juniors.

A THANK YOU NOTE . . .
Dear Peggy,
I would like to thank the committee that organized the year end banquet and
chose the prizes. This was our first banquet and we had a great time!
The awards committee made a wonderful choice of the stuffed pony for
Sarah's prize. It gets as much love as the real ponies. She grooms it and
bathes it and when the "pony" is a little bit tired, she tips it over and snuggles
up with it on the floor. When they're ready for some adventure, little sister
Kate gets on the jumping horse, Sarah gets on her pony and they go out for long
"trail rides" in their room.
Thanks to the whole club for a wonderful year. We're looking forward to all
the events in 2006.

Newsletter Editor &
Contributions
Sadly, we have accepted Nick Popoff’s resignation as
Vice-President and as Newsletter Editor. As many of
you know, Nick and Audrey are expecting their first
child this spring AND they just bought a terrific ranch
in Reche Canyon (did I hear 10 acres??). In addition
to all of this, Nick is a busy career man. So, we understand his time crunch and thank him for helping us
so much in the past with printing, copying, mailing,
etc.
If you would like to volunteer to help out with the
newsletter—either to edit the whole thing or make
contributions, please contact Peggy on 951 258 7178.
If you have something to announce (birth of the next
world champion foal, show results, the arrival of a
new child) or an article or other material you would
like to share, please submit your contributions by the
15th of the month prior to publication to:
[email protected] or by fax 951-808-8536 or by
snail mail: 1695 Corona Avenue, Norco, CA 92860
We’ll be happy to include your contributions!

Safety
I know it is a boring topic, but SAFETY needs to be first and
foremost in our minds if we want to enjoy our animals in
public.
Recent members’ observations: A motorized scooter in the
in-gate area despite repeated requests to move to the viewing
area; Children driving carts/carriages on the grounds with no
helmet; A passenger left in a cart while the driver got out of
the
cart—no
one
heading
the
horse;
A driving participant who did not have a whip in the
cart/carriage—she should not have placed in her class b/c a
whip is REQUIRED equipment, very necessary to drive a
horse forward and to prevent jackknifing and flipping a car-
riage/cart over.
Parking cars—please remember to THINK about where you
park your car. If you or a friend park next to a horsetrailer,
don’t be upset if a horse sits on your hood!
Please try to remember to be safe. If you observe unsafe behavior, please ask the person to modify their behavior and offer to
help them (e.g. lend them a whip, hold the horse’s head, offer to
hold their horse while they get a helmet, help them move to a
safe
location,
etc.)
