In his
his own
ownwords
words......
I was born in Petaluma in 1936 to
Silvio and Mary Volpi of Northern Italian
Heritage.
My father took lessons from Professor Angelo Cagnazzo in the 1920s and
later played with the Traveling Minstrels.
Angelo Cagnazzo was also Dick Contino’s
teacher. He taught mainly in San Francisco and played in the Italian neighborhood of North Beach in the evenings. Pa
was also a well-known accordion teacher
in his own right.
As a young boy, I was taught piano
for 12 years. I took a few accordion
lessons from Professor Cagnazzo before
he passed away in the 1950’s, and from
Guido Boccaleoni who was my father’s
student. This Petaluma teacher taught
an entire town and an entire generation
of accordionists who came of age after
World War II.
For the most part I was self-taught.
In 1925 my father purchased Volpi’s
Grocery & Bar now known as Volpi’s
Restaurant and Bar at 124 Washington
Street here in Petaluma.
The Accordion Club of the Redwoods originally used our restaurant
facilities to hold their monthly meeting
until they outgrew our space. I was one of
the original founders of the ACR. Meetings are now held at Hermans Sons Hall
in Petaluma every third Monday.
My sister Silvia and I have both
entertained for decades in the back bar
(also a speakeasy during Prohibition) by
singing and playing!
Other than my wife, Mary Lee and
family, the accordion has always been the
great love of my life.
I appreciate this honor you have
bestowed on me and I look forward to all
the talented musicians who come to see us
at Volpi’s and grace us with their playing.
The honor is ours ‑ ED

Unless it’s the opening weekend of
deer hunting season, you’ll find John Volpi
strapped into his recently restored vintage
Excelsior, playing and singing the old
Italian songs. His cherished accordion provides him with more than just memories;
it’s his way to connect with people who
visit Volpi’s Ristorante & Bar in downtown Petaluma.
On weekends John holds court in
what was once a 1920s speakeasy during
Prohibition. In the evening, a parade of
cowboys, farmers, punks, baby boomers,
and flirtatious women begins. The men
offer to buy him drinks (he likes Old
Fashioned cocktails), and the women leave
behind traces of perfume and kisses on his
cheek. By the time midnight rolls around,
he’s strolled through the dining hall a few
times playing Happy Birthday and “La
Bionda” for the celebrants.
Volpi’s has been a musical hub for
decades thanks to John’s father Silvio,
who taught a generation of accordionists.
It has almost single-handedly kept Italian
accordion music alive in the North Bay. It
has fostered a legacy of Italian classics and
nostalgic northern Italian Alpine songs as
well as Italian-American pop standards
heard on jukeboxes.
Even before the Cotati Accordion
Festival was hatched in 1991, John’s
accordion-centric restaurant nourished
many squeezers; and over the years, John
established a friendly, relaxed environment, graciously embracing hundreds of
accordionists, including myself, in the
restaurant. Both John and his sister Silvia

have been entertaining guests and friends
for decades. The Volpi siblings, with familial ties to the Sebastiani wine making
tradition, maintained a gig schedule at
many other Italian venues, too. Sharing
the love of the accordion has been their
top priority.
I salute John’s warm hospitality in
welcoming accordion festival participants
year after year. It’s been quite a journey.
In 1970, I arrived with the San Francisco
State Concert Band to recruit Petaluma’s
high school music students and visited
the historic restaurant. In 1998 when I
moved to Sonoma County, my first
accordion club meeting was at Volpi’s.
It’s now 2013 and I’m happy to say that
the squeeze goes on! Thank you, John.
Congratulations! Tanti Auguri! ▲

ACCORDION DOCUMENTARY
Behind the Bellows: A Documentary on the Accordion
Researched, directed and narrated by Steve Mobia
Seven years in the making, this onehour movie is the first American documentary about the beloved but often misunderstood squeezebox: its history and variety as
well as its effect on popular culture.
Film contains insightful interviews
with accordion legends such as Anthony
Gall-Rini, Guy Klucevsek and Dick
Contino among many others. You’ll see
the original drawings for the accordion’s
patent of 1829 as well as the first design
of the concertina. Visit an accordion
museum and a factory where the instrument’s many parts are created. Venture
through several types of concertinas,
button boxes as well as a presentation of
MIDI accordions. See historic clips of
Guido Diero, Art Van Damme, Law-
rence Welk and Frankie Yankovic. Discover why “Lady of Spain” is associated
with the accordion. See the first attempt
to make a rock-n-roll accordion. And
listen to where the accordion might be
headed in the future.
Screening times are 1 pm and
5 pm Saturday and 1 pm and 4 pm
Sunday and are held in the Lion’s Club
Buiding across the street next to the firehouse. Showing for CAF attendies only.
Admission is free.
See page two for a detailed map.
Copies of this video will be offered for sale
at the festival with a portion of proceeds
donated to the CAF. Thank you Steve.

In 2006, he opened up his repertoire to include performances on vintage
keyboards such as the Hammond organ,
the Farfisa and the Fender Rhodes, etc.
This has given his creative and musical
mind additional freedoms to venture
deeper into the enigmas of psychedelic
jazz music. In 2009, along with Carlo
Borsini of the Borsini Accordion factory,
Vincenzo helped to design a new system
for accordion registers which allows
the player to widen the range of sound
coming from the instrument. After more
than a year of construction, testing, and
design, this Signature accordion was officially presented at the Frankfurt fair in
April 2011. Richard Galliano, speaking
about young accordionists in an interview which was published in the French
magazine “Jazzman” said: “The person
that really impressed me is a young Italian with an origin from Puglia, Italy:
his name is Vincenzo Abbracciante. In
every piece he embarks on a story which
touches me.”

San Francisco’s accordion-fueled
rock ‘n’ roll band pumps out rock classics
and catchy originals chronicling life in
the weird lane. Fronted by singer-songwriter/squeezebox wizard Paul Rogers and
Suzanne Garramone — promises to forever rearrange your understanding of the
accordion. TDA’s extreme squeezeboxers
mix solid keyboard chops with a groundbreaking use of guitar effects pedals and
amps to produce a super-cool sound like
nothing you’ve ever heard emanating
from an accordion.
Behind the amazing wall of wheeze,
drummer Michael Messer and bass player
Lewis Wallace anchor the band, providing a firm foundation upon which the
manic TDA accordionists can layer huge
slabs of sonic mayhem.
With a sense of humor that just
won’t quit, the one-of-a-kind band blazes
through a variety of musical genres —
from rock and funk to polka — and
torches timeless classic rock tunes along
the way. You won't believe your ears.

Gail Campanella
As a youngster
growing up in a large
Italian family on a
farm in northeastern Colorado, Gail
showed an interest
in the only musical
instrument in her
home, her mother’s
old accordion.
Her formal music
instruction began at
the age of 10 in Ft.
Morgan, Colorado,
where she enjoyed
lessons and participated in annual
accordion contests,
Kiwanis Stars of
Tomorrow, talent
shows and many
other local events.
Gail became
the town accordion
teacher at age 14,
when the local
accordion teacher
retired. She made
monthly 80-mile
train trips to Denver to study accordion with Anthony
Pennetti and to
play in his accordion orchestra.
Gail majored in piano at Loretto
Heights College in Denver while continuing her study in classical accordion with
Robert Davine at the University of Denver. After graduation, she played “honky
tonk” piano in Central City, Colorado,
and taught music in the Denver Public
Schools. She continued to study the Orff
and Kodaly methods of music education
and became a Certificated Orff music
teacher. For the past several years, Gail

has been a member of the Los Angeles
Accordionaires Orchestra. She has
resumed teaching private accordion and
piano lessons, and performs on both piano
and accordion.
Gail and her husband, John, have
three grown children, Gian Carlo, a real
estate broker currently living in Istanbul,
Turkey; Dino, drummer and keyboardist
in the band, “dredg” who lives in Campbell, CA; and Veronica, who lives and
works in Santa Barbara, CA. ▲

Frank petrilli
Celebrating 28 Years
of
Accordion Maham
Polkacide was formed in the
early 1980’s by a group of punk
and free jazz musicians — none of
whom had played polka prior to
this — to play a party for The San
Francisco Club for the Deaf (true
story-see our website for details).
Since then the band has played every
imaginable venue from the country’s
largest polka festival at Seven Springs,
PA to opening for jazz legend Sun Ra.
We are delighted to be playing the
CAF again this year. Of special interFrank Petrilli was born and still
lives in Los Angeles. Much of his energy
has gone into the successful business
he owns and operates, Petrilli Concrete
Contractors, but his creative musical side
has always been a strong drive as well. He
started playing the accordion at age 7 and
by age 16 was playing professionally. As
the popularity of the accordion declined
in the U.S., Frank switched to playing
Hammond B3 Organ and saxophone for
about 15 years. In 2006, he returned to
the accordion and started playing with
the César Mateus Latin Jazz Band at
many jazz venues throughout the Los
Angeles area.
In late 2006, Frank began intensive
study with the great jazz accordionist,
Frank Marocco, which quickly evolved
into a very close friendship. By virtue
of their close relationship and mutual
love of jazz, Frank Petrilli became Frank
Marocco’s protégé, and Frank Marocco
often commented that Frank Petrilli was
like the son he never had. Unfortunately,
this relationship ended far too soon with
Frank Marocco’s untimely passing on
March 3rd, 2012.
As Frank Petrilli became known as
an excellent player in the jazz community,
he began performing frequently in the
Los Angeles area with artists such as guitarists Patrick Barrogain and John Chiodini at top venues such as the Vibrato Jazz
Club. Frank has also performed at many
of the major accordion festivals and clubs
in the U.S. including the AAA Festival in
Charleston 2011, and at the San Francisco
Accordion Club on numerous occasions.
In October of 2011, Frank appeared
on the TV series Mad Men. In May of
2012, he was invited to play in the spot that
Frank Marocco had been scheduled for
as a featured performer at the Accordion
competition in Kiev, “Accofestival 2012.”
He also was one of the judges for the jazz
portion of the competition. Immediately
following that, he performed at the Frank

Frank Petrilli continued
Marocco Memorial Concert in Castelfidardo, with many other stars of the accordion
world. His debut CD, ”Totally Frank,”
was recorded in Italy during this trip. It
was produced by Elke Ahrenholz of “Artist
Signed Records,” and includes the playing
of three fine Italian musicians; Felice Del
Gaudio, Max Ferri, and Fabio Zeppetella.
In this CD you will definitely hear
the influences of Frank Marocco. However, Frank Petrilli plays his own style which
includes more focus on Latin grooves. As
the booking agent and artistic director
of Vibrato Jazz Club, Pat Sentator wrote,
“Like his mentor, Petrilli gives new life to
the accordion with impeccable phrasing
and a smooth, fluid style.” You will enjoy
the musical stylings of Frank’s accordion
both in concert and in his CD and can
expect some very good music coming from
him in the future. ▲

Chuck Berger
40’s ... through music of the 70s and 80s!
Through the early years of his career, polka
music was his mainstay while working
with the big name polka bands in the
Midwest. With the advent of the MIDI
accordion, he now precisely emulates all
styles of music, whether it be big band,
country, vocal groups, or polkas and waltzes (Swiss, German, Italian, Polish, to name
a few). His sound from stage is equivalent
to a 14-piece orchestra without the aid of
computer generated background.
Each instrument heard, including
the acoustic accordion, is actually being
played by Chuck. Thus, he has become
the true “ONE MAN, BIG BAND,” and
is referred to by many as the “MASTER
of the MIDI accordion.” Because of his
love for the accordion, he goes out of
his way to perform for accordion clubs
throughout the U.S. A repertoire of over
2000 songs makes him a true crowd
pleaser. ▲
Chuck Berger has been a professional
performer for 40+ years. His repertoire
consists of the big band sounds of the
Jim Gilman
Jim Gilman was seemingly fated to
play the accordion. At the age of seven,
a local Chicago accordion school called
his parents and offered six weeks of free
accordion lessons because they had heard
their son “had talent.” After resisting a
high-pressure accordion salesman, private
lessons were arranged.
A move to California during Jim’s high
school years seemed to halt his accordion
career, but fate stepped in once more. Jim’s
father actually saw in the Long Beach paper,
“Wanted: Accordion player.” I ask you…
how many times have you ever seen that?
Jim earned his way through college playing
at Knott’s Berry Farm as a street musician.
In 1972 he met up with (by chance?)
a saxophone player by way of a 3x5 card
posted on a bulletin board and they went
“on the road” playing at Holiday Inns all
over the Midwest. After over 35 years,
they’re still together along with a guitarist
and a drummer that were added in 1975.
Jim’s not a one-man band; he’s a one
man orchestra. “It’s truly amazing what
electronics, computers and MIDI have
done for the accordion. Acoustic purists
may turn their noses up at all this stuff but
the audiences love it,” says Jim.

Andre Thierry
and Zydeco Magic
Andre Thierry is a phenomenal
talent who has been capturing the attention of other musicians and music lovers
since he was a toddler. Andre’s French
Creole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana although he was born and reared in
northern California. Michael Tisserand,
author of The Kingdom of Zydeco, considered the definitive book on the history of
Zydeco music, wrote,
“In America, great migrations produce
great music. Just as Delta musicians took
Highway 61 to Chicago and electrified
their blues, so did the Creoles and Cajuns
migrate to California and establish vital
dance communities. Now the California
scenes rival anything back home in Louisiana, and that’s due to players like Andre
Thierry, a standard bearer for the new generation. Thierry is among the best of both
the West Coast and the Gulf Coast, and
he combines youthful vigor with a mature
appreciation for his inherited tradition.”
Andre’s story begins July 9, 1979,
when he was born in Richmond, California to Olivia “Tee” Guillory, originally
from Basile, Louisiana, and Gregory Thierry, originally from Jennings, Louisiana.
Andre’s childhood was deeply influenced
by his maternal grandparents, the late
Houston Pete Pitre (Pa-Pa as they called
him) from Basile, Louisiana and his loving
grandmother, known to all as Mama Lena
Pitre from Soileau, Louisiana.
Andre grew up experiencing the
French Creole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish, St.
Mark’s Catholic Church. The best Zydeco
musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled
to California to play at the dances and
spent considerable time at the Pitre’s house
while in the area. On one such visit, the
“King of Zydeco,” the late great Clifton
Chenier, grabbed three-year old Andre by
the arms and deemed him a future accordion player. From then on, Andre’s Pa-Pa,
Houston Pete, encouraged the young
Andre to play the accordion.
Andre captivated by Clifton
Chenier, he began teaching himself to

Jet Black pearl
So here she is... a one-woman
dynamo, traveling around the world,
singing and accompanying herself on
the accordion, playing the flute, human beatbox, music box, toy
piano and loop station...
But where
did it all start?
Jetty Swart,
a native of the
Netherlands, was
taking off in a
career as a graphic
designer when she
fell in love with an
old accordion, covered with dust, in
a hidden corner of
a second hand shop
in Prague. She took
it home, mostly for
its flowered bellows
and its woodcraft,
but when she
tried to play it, she
discovered a beautiful
melancholic sound. And
her fingers seemed to like its
mother-of-pearl keys much
more than the plastic computer ones they were so used to...
Packing her bags, she
traveled to the south or France,
where, seduced by the weather,
the nature, the lovely villages and a
charming town called Montpellier,
she decided to stay for a couple of
months, singing and playing the accordion in the streets. Months turned into
years, the street gave way for real stages
where she met other like-minded musicians
and in 2000 she started her band, Yeti.
First covering old French songs and then
creating her own, she has sung with her
band at hundreds of festivals, theaters and
clubs all over Europe, recording 2 CDs.
26
Yeti’s music-style has been
described as a cabaret gypsy
party where Nina Hagen
and Edith Piaf meet Lauri
Anderson and Björk.
Meanwhile she
continued her soloperformances, allowing
for closer contact with
her audience and... to
travel more easily! And
so one of her trips took
her to San Francisco in
2010. The Californians
loved her music, but what
the hell was she singing about? Her
new songs had to be in English,
so that the crowd wouldn’t miss a
word of these little dramas full of
dry wit and flamboyant characters.
Now, in 2012, she presents
her new trilingual (Dutch/French/
English) solo show accompanying herself on the accordion, flute,
kalimba and toy-piano. With her
loop-station she records brief
loops, which she layers with
her unrecorded voice, turning herself and her minimal
equipment into a cabaret
orchestra.
A new
country, a new
language, a wedding and a new
show... time for
a new name!
Jetty is pronounced Yeti in Dutch, a
spelling she has always used in France, but
since this ape-fur coat has gotten a little
old now, she has chosen instead the direct
translation of her full name: Jet Black
Pearl. And she’ll wear this one with delight
through all musical seasons!

Lady of Spain: The History
as researched by Toby Hanson
Lady of Spain was written in the 1920s
by three English songwriters who were fed
up with English dance bands that played
mostly American music. They took an old
Spanish folk form and write a new melody
and words for it. It became popular with
big bands, especially Guy Lombardo. It
was written as a quasi-Spanish Fox-Trot.
In the 1930s, American accordionists
picked it up and began playing it as their
“Spanish” piece. One of the earliest
pictures of Lawrence Welk is him from his
George Kelly touring days in a Spanish
costume for Lady of Spain. It really took
off when Dick Contino did the “authoritative” virtuoso version, complete with
bellows shake and sudden modulation
from C to Db. He made it famous playing

Aaron Seeman’s onslaught of
solo accordion and vocals has astounded audiences of all shapes and sizes.
Maximum Rock ’n Roll, the premier
punk magazine, pronounced him “over

of the entire first Dead Kennedys album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
His repertoire also includes, but is
not limited to, 70’s rock, Broadway,
klezmer, classical, country, Sousa
marches, punk rock, and even a polka
or two.
Rather than play hokey accordion versions of these songs, Duckman/
Seeman seeks to demonstrate that accordion and vocals alone can evoke the spirit
of the song, whether the hard driving rock
of AC/DC, the wide vocal range and sonic
landscape of Boston, or the supersonic
speeds and driving force of Dead Kennedys.

The accordion received a triple blow
to its image in American culture that by
the 1960’s had done serious damage. First,
millions of American children were forced
to play the unwieldy instrument against
their wills. Second, Lawrence Welk’s
widely watched show focused only on the
geekiest, corniest aspects of the instrument. Third, there was the rise of rock ’n
roll and the electric guitar.
This is not to say that the Duckman
renounces geekiness, far from it. But
America and the world must be reminded
what a powerful and versatile instrument
the accordion can be.
In addition to his accordionizationizing, Aaron Seeman is a founding member,
arranger, and vocalist with San Francisco’s
Punk Rock Orchestra, which performs
full scale orchestral versions of classic
punk songs. He also plays accordion in
Shamalamacord, Polkacide, and Red Hot
Chachkas. Aaron Seeman was a founding
member of the eclectic Romanian Musicinspired folk group Fishtank Ensemble. He
has recorded with Mr. Bungle and Estradasphere. He is the composer of a modern
classical opera “Opium: Diary of a Cure.”
He currently resides in Oakland,
California. ▲

Hard to Describe, Easy to Love
The Mad Maggies have been called
a lot of names — danceable CelticKlezmer, a funky, soulful Gypsy-CajunSka mashup, ska-punk with a pirate vibe,
rowdy, quirky ...
But, hey, what’s in a name? Each
of the Mad Maggies have been playing
music for a lifetime, racking up long
lists of performance experiences, show
savvy and brushes with fame. They are a
talented bunch, to say the least. And, no
matter what you call them, these “musicians without borders” play a crazy good
show.
They are currently working on their
seventh album plus a special bonus album for their upcoming 10-year celebration in 2014. They tour whenever they
get the chance.
They especially enjoy performing at
the Cotati Accordion Festival where
accordions rule and the music-loving
crowd knows how to have fun.
Accordionist and singer Maggie Martin
leads this stellar ensemble and is joined by
Johny Blood: tuba, bullhorn
Ray Fernandez: saxophones
ian Luke: drums, percussion

the cause.
Lagunitas is expanding its operation by opening a second brewery in
Chicago scheduled to go online the end
of this year. As their beer is shipped all
over the country, a second brewery in the
Midwest will be a great benefit. They can
now save shipping costs from the West
Coast.
Another way Tony and Ron give back
to the community is to host free concerts
in their amphitheater, hosting nationally
acclaimed artists. Twelve concerts are
planned for this year.
Lagunitas Brewing Company
"Turning Beer into Money for a Good Cause."
Tony Magee founded Lagunitas in 1993,
brewing beer from his home in Lagunitas,
Calif., but soon found he did not have the
resources to continue brewing there.
Water was a problem, so he moved
the operation to the nearby town of Forest Knolls but kept the name Lagunitas
because, as Ron Lindenbusch says, “It was
a pretty name and looked good in print.”
At that time, Tony was brewing beer at the
rate of seven barrels at a time. He was his
own distributor, selling kegs out of back of
his pickup truck in 1994.
The following year, 1995, marked
a big leap for the company as it moved
to the brewing and bottling facility it
now occupies in Petaluma. Now, Magee
and crew could start bottling their
beers. Lindenbusch came on the scene
at this time as “beer weasel” (director of
marketing).
In 1995, Lagunitas came on board as
one the Cotati Accordion Festival’s major
sponsors and the primary beer supplier. It
means a great deal to the volunteer groups
who work at the festival. The CAF is a
non-profit organization, which supports
these groups by giving back all proceeds to
them. To date we have contributed more
than $340,000 to these organizations. We
could not have done this without the support of the Lagunitas Brewing Company,
Magee and Lindenbusch. We owe our
success in a large part to their generosity
for the last 19 years.
Lagunitas does not do conventional
advertising in newspapers and magazines.
Instead, the focus is on supporting and
giving back to their community. Their
advertising is done on college radio and
public broadcasting stations and at the
many events they sponsor.
Their communities are not limited to
Petaluma and surrounding areas. Lagunitas
supports non-profit community events all
over the country. In fact, one of its employees is dedicated to searching out such
events and offering their beers to support

The brewery and “beer sanctuary”
where concerts are held, is located at 1280
N. McDowell Blvd., Petaluma, CA 94954.

The CAF is proud to be associated
with Lagunitas Brewing Company and its
community-minded philosophy of “Turning Beer into Money for a Good Cause.”
They obviously have a great deal of fun
doing it too.

Jim Boggio's Accordion
Ever wonder what happened to it? ...
Jim Boggio’s bronze statue may be the most
recognizable landmark in Cotati.
It stands in La Plaza Park, where the Cotati
Accordion Festival is held each year. Each
year at the CAF, the statue draws groups
of people who pose for a picture by it.
Boggio passed away in 1996,
but his accordion remains and is
on display at the Cotati Historical
Society Museum, located in Cotati
City Hall.
Boggio, an avid accordionist, was the
co-founder of the festival, which has grown
into the largest annual festival in Rohnert
Park, Cotati and Penngrove.
His accordion, displayed on a clever
cut out of the artist, is currently on
display at the Cotati Historial Society Museum located at 201 West Sierra
Avenue, Cotati (west end of City Hall).
Museum hours: Every Saturday, from
1 p.m. to 4 p.m and the 2nd Wednesday
of each month, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm

SUNDAy
(pronounced “ lay zah-mee” and means “the friends”)
Les Amis Zydeco has its roots in
the swamps of deep South Louisiana,
and in the Bay Area Cajun/Zydeco
dance scene. We strive for an authentic
sound whether we’re playing Cajun,
Creole, or Zydeco.
We love playing for dancers and
hopefully that shows. Some band members are long-time Cajun/Zydeco dancers. We focus on dancer enjoyment by
drawing on our own ingrained knowledge
of what makes for an enjoyable dance
evening.
We draw mostly from traditional
roots, and some more modern, including,
but not limited to: Amede Ardoin, Beau
Jocque, Boozoo Chavis, Chubby Carrier, Clifton Chenier, Danny Poullard,
Geno Delafose, Jeffery Broussard, John
Delafose, Pine Leaf Boys, Roy Carrier,
Rockin’ Dopsie, etc.
honed his chops on Louisiana music in
the vibrant Bay Area Cajun and Zydeco
dance scene. He has studied with such
musicians as accordionists Paul Daigle,
Ed Poullard, Jeffery Broussard, Wilson
Savoy, Ray Abshire, and Cedric Watson.
Dwight “plays the classics” of Cajun,
Creole, and Old School Zydeco, with
some originals thrown in. Dwight is
also working on a traditional, cajunonly, sideline project band called Bayou
Noir.
Dwight Shackelford - button accordions,
fiddle, vocals, washboard.
Dwight has been a member of
Sonoma-based Funk/Zydeco band Gator
Beat, DP and the Rhythm Riders, Sauce
Piquante, and currently fronts Les Amis
Zydeco.
Originally from the deep bayou
community of Houma, LA, Dwight
Patty Hammond - electric and acoustic
bass
(other work includes Mark St. Mary,
Freddie Hughes, Johnny Nitro, Tia
Carroll, Lisa Kindred, Craig Horton,
Birdlegg, and Sugar Pie DeSanto. She has
worked with the Bay Area bands Birdlegg
Jim Scott - electric and acoustic guitars.
Jim currently gigs with Mark St.
Mary’s zydeco band. He’s also played
with Louisiana zydeco heavy-weight
Jeffery Broussard, Kenny Menard &
Andrew Carriere, Courtebleu and sat
in with T Broussard, Lil Malcom, Leon
Sams, Brandon Ledet, & others.

Formed in 1989, Motor Dude Zydeco
plays zydeco — the infectious dance
music of the Creole people of Southwest
Louisiana. Led by Lake Charles, Louisiana native R.C. Carrier (vocals and rub
board) and Billy Wilson (accordion),
the band has performed for enthusiastic
audiences in clubs, concerts, and festivals
throughout the United States, Canada,
and Europe.
The band took its name from Motor
Dude, a horse owned by the late, great
zydeco accordion wizard Boozoo Chavis.
Over the years the band has taken Mr.
Chavis’ words of wisdom to heart, “If
you do something long enough, it gets
good!”
Based in the Zydeco tradition, Motor
Dude Zydeco utilizes piano accordion,
button accordion, rub board, guitar, bass,
drums and vocals to create its distinctive
sound. Many of their songs are sung in
Creole French. The quintet’s irresistible
rhythms and high-energy performances
are guaranteed to fill any dance floor.
Billy Wilson, Accordion: Cajun and
Zydeco music veteran Billy Wilson has
performed with such notables as Danny
Poullard & the California Cajun Orchestra, Dewey Balfa, D.L. Menard, Marc Savoy, Michael Doucet, and John Delafose.
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist,
Billy plays bass, guitar, fiddle, ukulele,
and steel guitar as well as piano accordion
and button accordion. Billy formed Motor
Dude Zydeco in October 1989.
Lloyd Meadows, Vocals, Rubboard, and Harmonica: Singer Lloyd
Meadows is a consummate crowd pleaser.
Lloyd’s soulful vocal stylings range
from zydeco, rock, blues, and R&B, to
standards. His music resume includes
performances and recordings with Mal
Sharpe’s Big Money, Tom Rigney, the
Zydeco Flames and Elvin Bishop.
John Graham, Guitar: A twentyyear veteran of the Bay Area music scene,
John is also a founding member of Motor
Dude Zydeco. In addition to playing
guitar with Superior Angels gospel group
and rock star Bruce Springsteen in a band
called Earth, John has performed and recorded with blues men J.J. Malone, Sonny
Rhodes, Freddie Hughes, and Birdlegg.
Dennis Calloway, Bass and Vocals:
Dennis is a twenty-five-year Zydeco scene
veteran. He cut his musical teeth touring the globe with the Grammy-winning
zydeco bands of Queen Ida and Al
Rapone.
Willie Jordan, Drums: Willy Jordon’s drumming is formed by his varied
musical background (blues, Zydeco,
rhythm and blues, soul, funk, rock, and
jazz). He has performed and/or recorded
with Elvin Bishop, Frank Morgan, Charlie Musselwhite, Carlos Santana, A Case
of the Willys, and Gator Beat. From 1996
to 1998 Willy toured and recorded with
blues legend John Lee Hooker. ▲

The Wild Catahoulas
Saturday Only
the Wild catahoulas*
is the newest Cajun/ Zydeco band in
the North Bay, merging the traditional Cajun French two-steps and
waltzes from Southwestern Louisiana
with the more contemporary Zydeco
and New Orleans sounds. In other
words, a GREAT dance band.
Fiddler Gus Garelick comes
to the band with years of Cajun
experience from such groups as
Queen Ida and the Bon Ton Zydeco
Band, Al Rapone and Zydeco Express,
The Sonoma Swamp Dogs, and The
Cajun Coyotes. Joining Gus is accordion maestro Dennis Hadley, formerly with The
Cajun Coyotes and currently with The Hot Frittatas, allegra Broughton and Sam Page,
vocals, guitar, and bass, with Solid Air, and drummer Don connolly, with the Sonoma
County Love Choir. The Wild Catahoulas will get everyone on the dance floor. When

on the radio in the late 1940s. Specifically,
he played the piece on a talent search-type
show and won the $5,000 grand prize with
it. He also initially popularized Tico-Tico.
[So it is not strange that the opening track
of the anthology of American accordion
music, ‘Legends of the Accordion’ (Rhino,
R2 71847) starts with Lady of Spain by
Dick Contino]
Lady of Spain became a true accordion cliche from weekly national television exposure by Myron Floren. It, along
with Tico Tico and the Clarinet Polka and
Carnival of Venice, became accordion
standards. Nowadays everybody dreads
Lady of Spain because it's seen as
extremely corny. At the Northwest Accordion Society Social Monday night,
I was talking with another player about
L. of Spain. He claimed that the song
ruined the accordion and that L. of Spain
is the reason that nobody takes it seriously. I disagree. I love Lady of Spain. A
month ago I did my two-year review (I’m
a composition major at Cornish College).
I had to perform before the music faculty
to decide if I could continue my degree
at Cornish. Rather than write a “serious”
piece, I wrote and performed my World
Tour Variations on Lady of Spain where I
did the piece in various styles (Russian, Fr.
Musette, Irish, etc.). The faculty loved it
and I was invited to return and finish my
degree. Moral: love it or not, Lady of Spain
is here to stay. Ole! ▲

simka
sweet Moments of Confusion
... original compositions inspired by
folk traditions from many corners of the world
Simka’s name was chosen from the
Yiddish word for celebration. Simka has
been playing at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs,
weddings, parties and charity events in
the North Bay for over six years. Besides
klezmer music, the band’s repertoire includes Israeli folk dances, jazz standards,
tangos, polkas, fiddle tunes, and what
the band affectionately calls “café music”
– accordion-based tunes that invoke the
feeling of the “old country.”
Band originators Leta Davis (violin)
and Andy Weinberger (guitar), as well as
drummer David Ross, live in Sonoma.
Leta, who has played violin since she was
eight years old, was classically trained. Andy
moved from the East Coast to open a bookstore in Sonoma, and he brought with him
a genetic disposition for klezmer and jazz.
David, besides being a versatile drummer, is
also a classical pianist. David and Leta, who
are married to one another, also perform
classical piano and violin pieces together.
Bass player David Ballo, the newest member
of the band, lives in Santa Rosa and was
a founding member of Limonim, one of
Sonoma County’s earliest klezmer bands.
The heart of Simka is, of course, the
accordion, beautifully played by Ruth Edwards, who also lives in Sonoma. Ruth is
also known to Cotati Accordion Festival
enthusiasts as the official “Lady of Spain.”
Before Ruth joined the band, Leta pined
for an accordionist but didn’t know how
to conjure one up. One day, Ruth showed
up on the rehearsal doorstep versed mostly in French, Italian and polka music, but
with a keen desire to learn klezmer. She
has since mastered the exciting rhythms
and textures of klezmer music, while also
slyly weaving in the smooth romance of
French and Italian tunes which are so
appealing on the accordion. The musical
excitement that was sparked on that first
day at rehearsal has never let up.
“The real signature of our band,” says
Leta, “is that we have a great time playing this music together. We are so happy
when we play! That’s why we chose the
name Simka.” The band has a wonderful
chemistry, and anyone listening to their
CD, Café Society, can hear it in a second.

Leta Davis at 707-996-5233 or at

Drawing from classical technique,
improvisation and traditional folk styles,
cellist Myra Joy and accordionist Diana
Strong weave together complex rhythms
and captivating harmonies to create a rich
tapestry of sounds, ranging from delicate
and subtle to playful and bold.
Our new album is now available on
Bandcamp and CD Baby!
Sweet Moments of Confusion
performs original instrumental compositions inspired by folk traditions from
many corners of the world, particularly
Northern and Eastern Europe. They
produced their debut self-titled album,
released in summer 2012, and perform
across the West Coast.
The project is the result of nearly 8
years of collaboration, which began with
new arrangements of traditional Celtic,
Scandinavian, and Balkan tunes, and
developed into a finely crafted repertoire
of original work. Deeply informed by
an Old World aesthetic yet infused with
a distinctly modern voice, the music
moves seamlessly between tradition and
innovation.
About our name
Our name came from this quote
from an appreciative listener: “Sometimes, there are these sweet moments
of confusion when I can’t tell which
instrument is playing what.” The phrase
describes not only the way the sounds of
our instruments blend together, but also
something about the artistic process
in which we find ourselves. Often, it is
the moments when things are uncertain, when we find ourselves pleasantly
disoriented, that lead us to fruitful
surprises.
Myra Joy - cello: began playing cello at
six years old and holds a degree from
San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In
2007, she released an album of original
compositions. She is a founding member
of Elameno Quintet and Sweet Moments
of Confusion.
Myra Joy enjoys living and teaching
on the north coast of California.
Diane Strong - accordion
Music has always been an essential
part of my life. I began studying piano
at age 7 (Susan Waterfall was my primary teacher), and throughout my young
adulthood I avidly practiced classical
repertoire and informally composed. At
the same time, I grew up surrounded

The hot Frittatas
Northern California’s liveliest
ensemble for European and International
café music: Italian, French, Mexican,
Brazilian, and more. The Hot Frittatas
consists of fiddle, mandolin, accordion,
guitar, and cello. Their third CD, “What’s
Next?” was released in the Fall of 2009,
continuing a musical journey which
began with Caffe Liscio (2001), followed
by Invitation to the Dance (2004). Their
spirited performances include the Cotati
Accordion Festival, The San Francisco
Mandolin Festival, Rohnert Park’s Festa
Italiana, Portland Oregon’s Festa Italiana, the Folk Alliance West Conference,
in Phoenix, Arizona, and concerts from
Pasadena to Portland. They have played
wineries, restaurants, house concerts, and
Italian weddings throughout the Bay Area
and have written original music for television and film, as well as appearing on the
nationally syndicated radio show, West
Coast Live, in San Francisco, and “Says
You” on NPR. A great band for dancing,
dining or enchanted listening.
Band Members:
Gus Garelick (violino e mandolino).
Gus studied classical violin as a child in
Detroit, Michigan, but also listened to his
Eastern European relatives playing traditional Russian, Jewish and Italian music on the
mandolin. As a kind of detour to his classical career, he discovered Bluegrass music
while attending the University of Michigan,
and things were never the same! Since the
early 70s, he has played Bluegrass, Country,
Cajun, jazz and of course classical violin and
mandolin with groups, including the late
Jim Boggio and The Sonoma Swamp Dogs,
Queen Ida, Al Rapone, and the Berkeley
Mandolin Ensemble. In addition to the
Hot Frittatas, he now leads The Gravenstein
Mandolin Ensemble, in Sebastopol.
Dennis Hadley (fisarmonica). Dennis’
two musical mentors were Frankie Yankovic
and Hank Williams. Growing up in the East
Bay in the 1950s, playing accordion didn’t
make him the most popular kid on the
block. But when Zydeco and Cajun music
came on the scene, he was more than ready
to jump in. Meanwhile, he was exploring
other styles of accordion, as well, including
Italian and Gypsy and French Musette. He
now lives in Ukiah, California, where he
plays on one of his five accordions and still
likes Frankie Yankovic, this time with a
trace of Italian and Cajun spices.
Don coffin (chittara e mandolino).
Don was raised in an Italian/Irish household in Petaluma, California. He has
been performing music for international
audiences since the late 60s. From 1971 to
1978, he recorded and toured with his wife,
songwriter Kate Wolf. In the 80s, he toured
Europe with The Eclecticatz, an acoustic
trio playing Celtic, Cowboy, Country and
Swing. Since then, he has continued to play
Irish, Italian, Bluegrass and Country music.
He now lives in Lake County where he
produces local concerts and participates
in music programs in the Lake County
schools. He also hosts an early morning
Bluegrass radio show in Lakeport.
Gail Sharpsteen (violincello). The newest addition to the Hot Frittatas, Gail lives
in Calistoga and has studied and performed
in classical and Baroque music settings for
most of her life. She also learned to play
the tenor banjo, and accompanied her late
father, jazz clarinetist Tom Sharpsteen.
She is a member of the Nota Bene Baroque
Ensemble, in the Napa Valley, and also
plays mandolin and mandocello with the
Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble.

The Internationals™ actually started
under a different name ... but that was so
long ago that it’s hardly worth mentioning. The accordion was practically a new
instrument back then, the saxophone
was considered a novelty item (some
would still say it is...), and drum heads
were still made from actual animal skins
that drummers had to hunt for on their
own!.
From the beginning, Bobby has
been the core of the band — starting his
playing career while still in high school.
Stevie, on the other hand, came along
during Bobby’s college years. By comparison, Jan is practically a newcomer.
And then there’s the true “newbie” in
the group, Tom. So what follows is a
(very) brief account of how this band got
to where it is today.
Bobby Maggiora returned from
college and almost immediately began to
miss his performing days in high school.
So of course, he almost immediately put
together another band!
Bobby contacted a couple of his old
high school buddies, and the band was
off and running. But they wanted a bass
player, so Bobby invited Stevie McGinnis to start sitting in. Bobby and Stevie
had met at college and became fast
friends, so it was only natural that they
would want to keep playing together. It
turns out that Steve, who was known to
most of us as a tuba player back then,
was a pretty decent bass fiddle player
as well. (Stevie didn’t play bass guitar
at this point because no one but those
good-for-nothing long-haired freaks like
the Beatles included an electric bass in
the band. Of course, everyone knew that
“rock-and-roll” wouldn’t last and the
Beatles were nothing but a flash in the
pan... but I digress.)
Stevie can sing! He quickly became
the lead vocalist on many of the band’s
numbers. So it wasn’t long before Stevie
was a permanent part of the newly
named band, The Internationals™.
Over the years, The Internationals™
have historically played primarily as a
quartet. Early on, it was two accordions,
bass and drums. Later, it was accordion,
trumpet, bass and drums. And then for
a spell, it was just a trio... you guessed it:
accordion, bass and drums.
Enter Jan Meere. Jan had been
playing for many years in his father’s
band. But as time went on, he started
to venture out to other bands now and
then. As it turns out, the experience
of playing with a number of different
bands helped him to develop into quite
the versatile musician.
Fast forward to 2012... and the
introduction of the band’s new percussionist, Tom Cassaza! Tom has been a
long-time friend of the band, even sitting in from time to time. As of January,
2012, Tom became the full-time drumcontinued on page 56

play by listening to Clifton’s music. Andre
demonstrated an innate musical ability and
his skill quickly grew. Andre played his
first song, Willis Prudhomme’s version of
“Give’m Cornbread” in the backyard of his
grandparent’s home, for his delighted family.
He soon began playing Clifton Chenier’s
music on stages all over Northern California.
Andre Bio Picture
His grandparents continued to host
Louisiana musicians and this exposure to
his heritage allowed him to develop his
love for, and mastery of, traditional French
Creole music. By age twelve, with the help
of his mother, Andre formed his own band,
a gifted composer and songwriter and his
music and CDs feature many of his original
tunes. As quoted from an article published
in Eh Toi magazine 2002, “There is no
accordion player in Zydeco that uses his
left hand as well as Andre Thierry.” While
playing Washington, D.C. in 2003, the
Washington Post called Andre a “master”
at “pumping out fast, funky rhythms on
an instrument not usually associated with
earthy syncopation. A versatile student of
the music, Thierry can’t be lumped into
Zydeco’s old-school R&B-influenced camp
or its nouveau, rap-inspired one: He and his
band, Zydeco Magic, lay down both soulful, traditional slow-dances and bottomend-booming kinetic groovers.”
The San Francisco Bay Area, which
is home to some of the best blues musi-
"Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the
Gulf Coast, and he combines youthful vigor with
a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition.”
— Michael Tisserand, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco
“Zydeco Magic.” Andre’s repertoire grew
by leaps and bounds as he was regularly invited to play with numerous visiting bands,
such as the late John Delafose, his son,
Geno Delafose, and many local Zydeco
and Cajun bands, including the late Danny
Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra).
Andre is a virtuoso on all the accordion
types, single row, double row, triple row and
piano key. He effortlessly moves across types
to deliver an energetic two-step, traditional
Creole waltz, hard-driving blues or a blend
that is his own sound. Although Andre’s
instrument of choice is the accordion, he
also displays talent on bass guitar, rhythm
guitar and drums. Thanks to his parents
and grandparents he sings traditional songs
in original Creole French and his voice has
matured into rich and soulful tones. He is
cians in the world, showed its appreciation
by presenting Andre Thierry and Zydeco
Magic with the West Coast Blues Hall of
Fame award for “Best Zydeco Group” in
2008. Andre continually raises the bar for
Zydeco musicians worldwide. At only 33
years old, he is already a legend.
Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic
will capture your attention and serve up
an unparalleled musical experience that
captivates your soul. If you like to dance,
Andre will have you moving your feet
all night long. As the late great Clifton
Chenier once said about Zydeco, “if you
dance, your aches and pains will disappear.” Andre’s love of all things musical
and his passion for playing for his audiences delight dancers and music lovers
everywhere. ▲

The Golden State Accordion Club
Band has been pleasing audiences with
its European style music for many years.
The group is sponsored by the Golden
State Accordion Club and features a variety of accordions including Button Box,
Piano and Chromatic instruments.
Responding to audience demands,
the band performs polka and waltz music
of various European styles. The band
prides itself on the ability to get the toes
tapping, the hands clapping and the
dance floor flowing.
The Golden State Accordion Club
was formed in l991 and is a very active
organization determined to promote
the accordion family and perpetuate the
enjoyment this instrument gives to all.
The club is comprised of three chapters
which meet each month at the following
locations; Vacaville, Humboldt County
(Loleta) and Sacramento.
The club is very proud of its scholarship and accordion loaner programs,
which offer financial support and instrument availability to young players. The
past year the club awarded 15 scholarships
to youngsters ranging in age from 8 to
16. To date, we have awarded more than
$50,000 in scholarships.
Just for fun, we invite you to bring
your accordion or other musical instruments and join others in wild, raucous,
noisy playing in our jam tent here at
Cotati. We also hope you will be able to
visit us at one of our meetings; and, if you
would like more information about this
club, contact Carole at 707-864-2359. ▲

Tango No. 9
“The group plays with the vivacity
and enthusiasn as if they were backing the
master himself. Elegant, but with a wink,
this San Francisco quartet offers lively
Argentinean tango music with grace and
fun.” — Outsight
Tango No. 9 explores tango music in
all its myriad manifestations — traditional
dance music, vocal ballads, tango nuevo,
and more recent compositions — bringing an idiosyncratic twist to each. The
trio of instruments — violin, piano, and
trombone — may seem a far cry from the
more traditional orquesta tipica, but the
group’s ingenious arrangements capture a
much larger sound, while the unorthodox
brass instrument adds a new dimension to
the mix. The group rebuilds old warhorses
like “La Cumparsita” and “El Choclo,”
and also digs deep into the more obscure
nooks and crannies of the tango repertoire
to unearth some rare gems. Tenor Zoltan
DiBartolo mixes operatic training with a
natural theatricality and a pop sensibility honed in the trenches of late-night
warehouse parties and applies it to the
most romantic and heartbreaking songs
the world has ever known.
Astor Piazzolla, the group’s first love,
is single-handedly responsible for wrenching the tango out of the moribund 40s and
50s and plunging it kicking and screaming — and alive! —into the tumultuous
60s and 70s. To the traditional habañera
rhythms he added classical composition
techniques he had studied with legendary
Parisian coach Nadia Boulanger, the jazz
rhythms and improvisations he grew up
with in New York City, and incongruous
elements like odd meters and atonality to
forge a synthesis that was a true innovation:
tango nuevo. Tango No. 9 pays tribute to
this master with both respectful recreations
and original interpretations of pieces from
the entire range of his career, from his most
well-known “Adios, Nonino,” “Libertango,”
and “Oblivion” to the rarely performed
“Coral” and “Revolucionario.”
The group also offers tangos of more
recent vintage, with band members Greg
Stephens and Joshua Raoul Brody contributing original compositions. And almost
from their inception they cultivated a prolific relationship with Argentine composer
Alejandro Oyuela, whose “Radio Valencia”
is the title track of their second CD. Most
recently Oyuela set three poems by Allen
Ginsberg for the current line-up of the
group, featuring DiBartolo.
Band members include: isabel
Douglass - accordion; catharine clune violinist and music director; Greg Stephens
- trombonist and composer; Joshua raoul
Brody - pianist; Zoltan DiBartolo - Tenor

T
hese final three pages of the
program are devoted to thanking
all those who make the annual production of our internationally known festival possible. However, the largest thank
you goes to you, our patrons, celebrating
the accordion in all its imaginative uses,
and directly financially aiding, through
your ticket purchases, the local youth
groups that are so vital to our community.
The Cotati Accordion Festival is a
nonprofit organization that began as both
a way to bring local attention to the value
of the music of the accordion and to support the performing-arts programs in our
local schools. These organizations were
able to purchase band instruments and
continue programs which were cut due to
lack of state funding.
The Cotati Accordion Festival has
continued to do its part by donating all
its proceeds to the local youth groups we
support. We believe that to discontinue
these valuable programs, that the CAF
has supported over the years, would be
detrimental to the education of future
generations.
To date the festival has donated over
$360,000 to local youth programs. We
plan to go into the future providing a
stage on which our great accordion players may perform, inserting that eternal joy
of music into our lives for another weekend, and to do all that we can to provide
for our youth in the years to come.
These sponsors contributed their
time, merchandise and services to the
Cotati Accordion Festival, and we are
greatly appreciative to all them all. ▲
