LEAVE YOUR ACCORDION AT HOME.
PLAY A BORSINI ON NOV 16 A car-full of the some of the finest acoustic
accordions made in the world – Borsini Accordions – will be on display and
available for playing on Monday, November 16. Jeffrey Iacono of Borsini Accordions will provide a workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Immediately after that,
you are invited to play the songs you had planned to play that evening on one of
these Borsini events. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!!!
Borsini has been building top quality accordions for three generations in
Castelfidardo, Italy since1922. Six of the family members work in the
factory every day and most of the workman have been with Borsini for
their entire lives.
In January of this year, Borsini has opened our USA branch operation in
Orange County, CA offering factory sales, service, and professional tuning here in the USA. Jeffrey Iacono of Borsini USA was trained to service and tune the accordions by the master Vincenzo Borsini. Vincenzo worked for and was trained by is uncle Egisto Pancotti who started Excelsior. Vincenzo was
also trained to play the accordion by the famous Gervasio Marcosignori who is also a relative of the Borsini family.
Gervasio is famous for playing his accordion for Mussolini when he was just a little boy.
When the Borsini people visits in November they will walk everyone through the accordion building process. There is a
tremendous gulf between incredible accordion PLAYING and incredible accordion BUILDING.
Finding a quality accordion today goes much deeper than the names branded upon them and the names used to sell
them.
All in attendance from small to great will receive a free education on how to spot a quality accordion.
The Borsini Company will also have plenty of beautiful instruments available to demo.
OUR GUEST STARS FOR THE EVENING ARE…
THE
HURRICAJUNS!!!
SQUEEZEMASTERS
Open the November 16th meeting at 6:30.
The band was formed 8 years ago by Arizona Accordion Club member Phil Venturacci.
They play in the northwest valley. Videos can be seen on YouTube.com

MENU for November 16th is Spaghetti with Meatballs, Salad, Garlic Bread. Come Hungry and Leave Happy !
October 19th meeting -by Raye Donatella
Pre-meeting music was played by Leigh Dechaine on his electronic accordion. He did a fine job of entertaining us
by playing and singing lots and lots of German music .Thank you Leigh.
First up was Dr. Howard Van Orden, accompanied on drums
by his wife, Christine, playing “Autumn Leaves,” “Yellow
Bird,” and “I’m In the Mood For Love/I Don’t Know Why.”
Very nice. You are both so talented, it’s always a pleasure to hear
you.
Domenic Feroce, with Jay Stevens on bass and Jim Winning
on drums, stepped up to play “Bionolo Bella Bionolo,” “Biginella Compognola”
and “Chiri Biri Bin.” Thanks, Domenic, both for playing those beautiful songs
and for spelling them for me!
A reminder here for everyone who has children, grandchildren, or great- grandchildren who would like to visit Santa Claus. Our own Jim and Jennifer Stocker
will bring Santa and Mrs. Claus to greet the kids at our December 21 meeting!
This is the greatest Santa ever, so be sure to bring the little people out for a special treat.
Rosemary Smith came up and played “The
Kentucky Waltz,” “Beautiful Ohio” and the
“Sheboygan Polka.” Great job, Rosemary.
We always enjoy you and appreciate you
coming all the way from Sun City to play
for us.
Miguel Favaro, an exceptional student of
Pete Donatella’s, came up to play in front of
an audience for the first time. This is a big
step for any musician, and he did wonderful
renditions of “Sharpshooter’s March” and
“Glow Worm” Thanks, Miguel you’re on
your way now! You’re ready for your own
band!
The Collins boys were next in line with Quinn playing “The Lili
Flower” and “Top of the World,” followed by Liam, who played
“Kiss of Spanish” and “Ma Lan Hua Kai.” You boys played your
hearts out and we all loved it!
A few words of thanks here to Dionne Hauke, not only for being our
newsletter editor, but also for being the technician who takes care of
all of our accordionists instruments, including all twenty-four of the12
bass boxes that the fourth grade class uses. Thanks loads, Dionne!
And no, she’s not a “guest editor” - she is the editor again - thank
heavens!!

President’s Message
IT’S THE MONTH OF THANKSGIVING, SO THIS LETTER IS DEDICATED TO THE CORE OF FOLKS
WHO MAKE THE CLUB WHAT IT
IS.
First to the AAC Ensemble, you folks
volunteered your patooties off through
the entire month of October – raising
well over a thousand dollars for the
club. Chief among you are Jay Stevens,
Jerry Szymanski, Lester Rossner,
Jennifer Stocker, Pete Donatella, Ted
Lee, Leigh Dechaine, Chuck V. and
Toni Diamond.
Next, the club is both proud and grateful for those giving endless and tireless hours
of accordion teaching to the fourth graders at New World Educational Center:
Leigh Dechaine, Jay Stevens, Pete Donatella, Ted Lee, and Dionne Hauke –
the latter being responsible for the constant maintenance and repair of 24 accordions.
Our newsletter could not happen without the vigilance and hard work of Dionne
Hauke, Raye and Pete Donatella, and Florella Genco.
The videos you can request each month of past meetings are all recorded by Sal
Genco and duplicated by Pete Donatella. The photos that appear in this newsletter
and the website are taken by Jerry Szymanski, Sophie Rossner, and Joe Geremia.
At our meetings every month you see a small army of folks who take good care of
us. At the front desk: Raye Donatella and Rose Dermody. At the sales table:
Cindy Geremia, Joanne Robinson, and Jean Walls. For the raffle – besides the
ladies at the sales table – you have been happily accosted by Barbara Bednar and
Gunn Magnuson.
And how would we ever pull these meetings off without the folks at St. Stephen’s
Church – those who cook in the kitchen and do customer service in the hall: Steve
& Bonnie Durkit, Basil and Mary Rabayda, Christina Toth, Dorothy Bezeredi, Karen Lange, Anne Sferra, Steve, Hamas, and Jackie Prorock.
Finally, all of you who participated in the Arizona Accordion Festival at St.
Luke’s Church delivered stellar music and a
wonderful afternoon and evening of fellowship
and fun. I personally think that we are ready to
stage a bigger event – something called the

The Arizona Accordion Club
Update On The
YOUTH PROGRAM
The kids "FLEW" through their first concert ! And the beaming smiles and
proud performance posted the kids to want more ACCORDION. Great job
to the Accordion Club team that is providing the support for this program.
The poor accordions we bought needed a major "tune up" during the week
school break, so as usual Dionne jumped in and took all 25 instruments under her wing and provided some much needed maintenance.
It has been a challenge taking some already pretty well used 12 bass accordions and keeping them in service for the first 2 months of the project, even
the instructors have been repairing them on the fly as best they can to keep
them in the students hands. Fortunately we have not EVER had a student without an instrument to play ! GREAT job team.
The youth program team had a great meeting with Ramona Wright, ( department Head for the New World Education Center music
program.) Ramona approached the club with the possibility of offering individual instruction to those students that have excelled in
the 12 bass program, 4th graders from this year who would be ADVANCED 5th graders next year. And next year's new 4th grade
class is set for the Arizona Accordion Club to provide our music program to a new group of accordionists
As all things seem to be going great. The AZ Accordion Club Youth Program project has been successful beyond our wildest dreams
and I know personally I have heard almost every member of the Arizona Accordion Club mention at one time or another how we
NEED to get youth involved. Well we did it, we have them involved, lets KEEP them involved ! The members all wanted a youth
program and we now have it. Now the Accordion Club membership is going to have "GROWING" pains. Next step we need your
support .
Shortly after the meeting the Treasurer and myself (project chairman) looked at the budget
and funding for an expanded program. . . sad to say it is non-existent. The club treasuries are
at a low point in our history (BUT WE HAVE DONE A LOT THIS PAST YEAR) the scholarship fund has about $100.00 dollars. (Yep $100.00 is it. )
I know we have dispersed over $10,000 dollars from the scholarship fund over the past 10
years, all to the benefit of young players wherever we found them, But now in our own back
yard we find a great group of kids, some of which could use our help to further their study of
accordion and we don't have the funding.
A couple of ideas for the membership. PLEASE bring yourself up to date on the youth program, even join us one day for a class so you can see for yourself. THEN talk to everybody
you know or meet that might be able to help us and suggest if they have spend able income
and usually start looking around this time of year for a worth cause to donate a lump sum to . . That they look at the Arizona Accordion Club youth program. .. .. Any check written should be addressed to the scholarship fun or Youth program. . . . the treasurer already has a dual balance set up for the scholarship fund and will begin another balance for youth program when the need arises.
Okay, off the soap box and beggin' for bucks. . .. second thing you can do is consider getting involved. If not this year, next year as
we will need instructors for advanced students as well as for a new 4th grade beginner class. At almost every class so far we have had
anywhere from 2 to 5 instructors there, and they are all busy as heck the entire 45 minutes believe me... so it is not a one man show
and we will need 10-15 instructors by next year. . Good time to get your feet wet is NOW. . . . contact the youth program chairman
or anyone on the board of directors for information and scheduling. . . . YOU WILL NEVER FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOUR COMMITTMENT TO THE CLUB AND IT'S GOALS THAN DOING THAT . . . ! ! ! !! Believe me.
Last things, look in them closets. . . if you have either 12 bass accordions or 48, 80,96 or even small 120 bass accordions gathering dust,
consider donating them to the youth program or loaning them to the
Accordion Club for this use.
WE HAVE DONE IT, AND WE (THE MEMBERSHIP) SHOULD
ALL BE PROUD AND SUPPORTIVE

Arizona Accordion Festival
The annual music and fun-filled Arizona Accordion Festival was a great
success. Held October 17th From Noon to 10 P.M. at St. Luke's Catholic
Church in Phoenix.
It was a winning combination of an Oktoberfest Carnival, with all the
games, rides, food and a beer garden, and adding the Arizona Accordion
Festival with our numerous Arizona Accordion Club members playing non
stop for over 10 hours, that provided All day and evening fun for the entire
family!
.
Our Hit Night time line up of Performers at this 2009's festival included:
Joey Avila and Los Valley Boys , the Hurricajuns, the Arizona Accordion Ensemble.
Our Arizona Accordion Club has monthly meetings, holds this annual festival, a picnic, a youth program and sponsors scholarships for young accordionists. To help keep these and more accordion events like this going, we
will always need funds so…
This year, the club went even further than before with the release of “Hot
Original Polkas”, an album of original polkas written and performed by
members of the club. Each polka has its own flavor and the players range in
age from 19 to 80+.
The album kicks off with a track composed by club member, John Smoltz.
Available as a CD or instant download.

Breathe in… Breath out… Good…
By Dionne Hauke
The accordion is an air tight box. Well, it should be. If you have excessive air leaks, the music will not
be very loud or sound at all. This is because the air you pump with the bellows is being drawn into or forced
out of the box through the reeds. If the air goes somewhere other than the reeds, you may find yourself working
harder than necessary.
However, you will find times when it is needed to extend or close the bellows without producing noise.
You need a way for the air to escape or come out of the box. So, on the eight day, Gusipe said “Hey, we need
an air valve!” And it was added, and it was good. When you have the accordion on and the left hand is through
the left hand strap, you will find, with your thumb, a button toward the top of the instrument. And when
opened, it will go whoosh. This air button is also important for temperature regulation.
You have just driven to the gig (or grandma’s house) and it’s very cold outside, but nice and warm inside. You’re not comfortable yet, are you? Neither is your accordion. Open the case for a few minutes. Maybe
stand it up in the case so that the room air can circulate around it (while you take off your jacket, and get a cup
of cocoa).
Now you’ve warmed up. Pick up your instrument, open that air valve, and bring some room air into the
box. Warm it up to room temperature before playing. (When little Johnny asks “wha’cha doin’?” remind him
it’s his bedtime.) Playing a temperature shocked accordion will often
sound horrible. Some notes will sound off pitch and place unnecessary
stress on the instrument. So don’t do it!
Remember a happy accordion will make for a happy accordion player.
Now quit reading and go squeeze!
Page 11

Now it’s time for our guest artists - Bill Regina and the
Arizona Button Accordion Band. The band includes
Bill and Zina, Helen Frost, Dorothy Noeding, Linda
Danik and Vall Mills. They were accompanied by Jim
Winning on drums and Jay Stevens on bass. I’m going
to list several of the songs they played so you can see
how multi-talented this group is! They played “Hoptoit
Polka,” “Simcic’s Waltz,”“Seeman,” a foxtrot, “Angel
Polka,” “Star On Nebu Mountain Waltz,” “Spanish Eyes,”
“Beer Barrel Polka,” “My Blue Heaven,” “Hoyers Polka,”
and “Komnick’s Polka.” That’s not even all of them, but is
that impressive or what? Not only did they play pretty,
they looked pretty! That was so special, folks! I’m sure
everyone enjoyed it as much as I did!
Break entertainment by Dr. Van Orden, Leigh Dechaine and Jim Winning.
After the break, Joan Monti, Bob Doszak, Carl Nyberg on banjo, Jay Stevens on bass,
and Jim Winning on drums played a nice variety of songs. First was “You Are My Baby
Doll,” sung by Bob Doszak. Then they
played “Kansas City” with Carl on guitar
now and singing the lyrics, then a rousing
version of “Proud Mary,” again with Carl
singing. Carl than played a banjo solo,
“Bye Bye Blues” - Carl, I love to hear you
play the banjo - my father played banjo
all his life and you always take me back.
That was fun! Thanks, all of you.
Dixie Dorma, with Carl Nyberg on guitar, Jim Winning on drums and Jay Steven playing bass and singing, did “Jambalaya,” followed by “Mexicali
Rose.” What a great sound!
Rounding out the evening were Dennis Humlicek and Frank Schweller, with
Jim Winning on drums playing “Oh Marie,” “Ooh, La La,” “No Beer In Heaven,”
and “Chapel In the Valley.” We’re sure glad you remembered to bring your accordions, guys! You are always a pleasure to hear.
As the last song for the evening, Jerry Szymanski and Rosemary Smith with
Jim Winning on drums, played the “Sheboygan Polka.” A fitting end to a musicfilled, happy evening!
Dad always said:” - “It’s not the size of the load that breaks a man down - it’s the
way he carries it.” (Pete says that’s especially good for accordion players!)
