S CK MO MONTGOMERY-BUCKS DENTAL SOCIETY 2ND DISTRICT - Pennsylvania Dental Association ER GOM Y-BU NT DEN TISTR Y BULLETIN DENTAL SOCIETY Distinquished Speaker Series Monday, September 28, 2015 Normandy Farms Rt. 202 & Morris Rd., Blue Bell Dr. Ryan Tamburrino Presents Parafunctional Rationale for Transverse Normalization As a profession, dentistry must attempt to address, control, and prevent many issues that result from parafunction. Broken crowns, fractured teeth, periodontal attachment loss, tooth sensitivity, TMD, worn teeth, and non-carious devitalization all can stem from uncontrolled clenching and grinding. These issues come up in everyday practice for both the dentist and hygienist alike. Parafunction often forms the dividing line between long-term success and failure of many procedures and dental health maintenance. This lecture will focus on several aspects of preexisting tooth and jaw position, as well as airway issues, that may contribute to future or progressive attachment loss on teeth from parafunctional loading of susceptible patients. Additionally, we will discuss how, as practitioners, we may actually be exacerbating these issues in our patients. Also, a strong emphasis will be placed on various tools the practitioner can use to help triage susceptible patients, systematize appropriate patient-specific treatment protocols, and potentially allow for improved longterm treatment success. Volume 63, Number 1 August/September 2015 President’s Message It all began with a can of Diet Coke! If you know me, you know that is true! My long standing Benco representative, Joan McGowan – Schofield, stopped by on a routine call so I took a break with my standard can of Diet Coke. She had just heard that I was the President-Elect of MBDS and wanted to congratulate me. We started chatting, and she asked me if I would be willing to host a Dr. Joanne Burrell Woman’s Dental Event in honor of Anne O’Day’s current role as President and my future role as President of the Society. Benco has a division, The Lucy Hobbs Project, which honors woman in dentistry and promotes leadership and networking amongst woman. The more I thought about it, the more I became intrigued. I have combined forces with a dear friend, colleague and former resident Amanda Hemmer. Amanda is completing her training in the ADA Diversity In Leadership Program. She has diligently helped with the organization of this program. With her connections to the ADA, she has arranged to bring two prominent woman leaders in dentistry to our program: Drs. Maxine Feinberg, current President of the ADA and Kathleen O’Loughlin, ADA Executive Director. These women are examples of individuals who somehow “do it all.” They have graciously agreed to give the opening remarks to our program. When I read their bio’s, I really wonder how they do it all! I think they have a few more plates spinning than I do! The program, “Women - How Do We Do It All? Achieving Life Balance” came about from my analogy of us female practitioners being jugglers - we balance plates in the air all day long. Some are spinning faster than others, and some slow down and need our attention to keep them moving. Regardless of what phase of life you are in your dental career (dental student, resident, new graduate, associate or owner), the daily balances of life tug at us continuously. I often cite the example of when my husband changed careers and he had the first summer off supervising our two children Chris and Chelsea. The evening after the first day of camp, when I asked him how things went, his response was something along these lines: “I got them up, lotion on, camp bag packed, breakfast, in the car to camp, errands, ate lunch standing up, mowed the lawn, went to post office, looked at my watch and realized it was 2:30 and I had to get the kids!! Then, they wanted a snack and before I knew it I had to get dinner organized!” I just smiled. On the second day of camp, I clearly remember I was lecturing to new residents, I was interrupted by a phone call from the camp nurse. Now, on the medical card, my husband was specifically listed as the first phone contact. Thus I was immediately alarmed – this must be important...bleeding that cannot be stopped...ambulance called...my mind is whirling and jumping to a hundred conclusions - each worse than the next. I interrupted my lecture to receive the phone call from the nurse: “Your daughter has sun tan lotion in her eye …. It is very painful and her eye is tearing … I have applied cool compresses and sent her back to her bunk … My experience is she Continued on Page 3 2 August/September, 2015 MONTGOMERY-BUCKS DENTAL SOCIETY P.O. You might want to consider using suntan lotion on a roller for the face.” NOW she tells me this – really! Couldn’t this have been in the camp literature? No matter...I politely ask, “Did you call her father?” Her response, “No, she asked for her Mom.” Okay – heart strings pull here. So here I am, new residents in the clinic and I am giving their orientation lecture....am I detecting a smirk on their faces??? I announce a break and frantically try dialing my husband. Where is he??? I mean really, I am trying to be professional here – set the tone for the year – be the boss lady. To make the long story short....two more phone calls from the nurse, a crying daughter on the phone, as I am just about to suggest an early lunch to the residents where I will go and pick my daughter up from camp (no idea as to what I will do with her), when my husband calls and says, “What's up? Four missed calls??” Here he was in Home Depot, getting things for a project I asked him to do and must have been in a dead cell zone. He, being the all around wonderful guy he is, dropped what he was doing and picked her up from camp. On the way home, he purchased the suntan lotion on a stick which can be used on the face with no danger of getting it the eyes. I also suspect ice cream was purchased as well. Lesson learned. This is just one example, of many through the years, where we balance life: home, family and work. I love my life and all it brings, but how we manage all of it has been challenging. This program is not meant to be disrespectful to my male colleagues, but my daughter wanted me, her Mom, in that particular situation. On another occasion, my Dad called his daughter first...not my other siblings...to tell me about Mom’s fall. My staff wants me to be their friend and their boss... it goes on. We all balance - we all keep those plates spinning. My husband does it one way and I do it another. For all of my female colleagues, who balance plates and keep them spinning as well, please join me for a day of candid discussion and networking. Perhaps we can gleam a few pearls of wisdom from our speaker, Lisa Philps, if not from each other. So in your busy calendar, please reserve Friday November 13th for this interesting event. Amanda and I purposely let the finish time be 1pm so we can do some errands and get dinner organized before the kids come home. Keep those plates spinning! Halloween is just around the corner and the Montgomery Bucks Dental Society (MBDS) would like to invite you to participate in an easy, philanthropic and fun program that keeps cavity-causing candy away from our patients. To participate in the MBDS Candy Buy-Back Program, you simply offer to purchase excess candy from your patients after Halloween for a nominal amount and then MBDS will help you donate the candy to charity. Setting up a Candy BuyBack Program in your office is a wonderful way for your office to promote oral health, engage with your younger patients and join the MBDS in helping Operation Gratitude. Interested in participating? We collected these tips from past participants to make it easy for you: 1. Select a date and time to collect and weigh the candy at your office. • We recommend selecting a day during the week following Halloween • If you choose a limited time period (~2.5 hours), you can turn it into an event at the office 2. Decide how much you will pay for each pound of candy surrendered. • We suggest paying each patient $1 for every pound of treats delivered • Make sure to set a per-person limit (perhaps five pounds) • Provide a dental gift bag to participants and/or hold a raffle for an exciting prize 3. Announce the MBDS Candy Buy-Back Program to your patients! • E-blast your patients • Promote the program on your office’s Facebook page and website • Invite adults to donate the leftover candy that they did not give out 4. Create your own in-office signage to promote the event • Check out our website for some ideas from other MBDS dentists 5. Day of the Event: Be Prepared! • Make sure you have all the supplies you need: Scale to weigh the candy; Plenty of $1 bills; Staff available to track the results; and Camera to take photos • Box the collected candy as it’s collected (…start saving your dental supply boxes now for packing!) • Consider wearing costumes during the collection to add some fun and spirit to the event • Memorialize the event on social media by posting pictures and also submit them to MBDS to be included in our next newsletter and on our website 6. Join MBDS in donating the collected candy! • MBDS will be collecting candy amassed by our dentists. The collection locations will be announced in a future bulletin and by email blast. Collection will be some time in mid - November. • MBDS will be donating the collected candy to Operation Gratitude • If you would prefer to donate the candy directly, dentists are encouraged to find a local Liberty United Service Organization (www.LibertyUSO.org) to drop off their collected candy 7. Make sure to thank your patients for their participation and announce how many pounds of candy were collected by your office and MBDS dentists for Operation Gratitude Dear Colleague, Please join me and the Community Awareness Committee in supporting Operation Gratitude with our Candy Buy Back Program. This is our inaugural event with this organization, however Operation Gratitude has been around for years. The candy we “buy back” will be sent with the local USO to military overseas. The mission statement from Operation Gratitude: Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Our mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Each package contains donated product valued at $75-100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than One Million Care Packages. Let us support this worthy cause in our inaugural Candy Buy Back Program. TAMBURRINO grew up in Pittsburgh and his tinkering and technical interests during his early years led him to Duke University where he received degrees in Biomedical Engineering/Materials Science. In addition to private practice, Dr. Tamburrino is on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Tamburrino also lectures locally with various study groups as well as internationally/nationally with the Complete Clinical Orthodontics Course and Roth-Williams Center for Functional Occlusion.
