ZINGERpresents is pleased to host Derek Brunen’s first exhibition with the gallery: “Rapid
Waking”. In his first solo exhibition after graduating from the Piet Zwart Institute, a
constellation of vivid, poetic works communicate a spiritual and comtemplative core, with a
simplicity of outlook.
Brunen’s practice takes place in the fold between the unconscious and the hyper aware. It
rests in the momentary lapse where absence and nothingness are both confirmed and
contested by presence and the absolute. For example, a reworking of “Blind” (2007) veils the
30 ft glass façade of the gallery, obscuring the passerby’s view whilst raising and tempering
expectations of what lies beyond this transitional barrier erected by the artist.
Through the flaws of the human condition, Brunen seeks to reconnect with the world and its
forces in his performative practice. Whether we see the artist attempting to navigate his way
home from work with his eyes closed, or hung-over, looking for his missing keys, bike and
phone (a result of a heavy night of drinking in a barren industrial Rotterdam) we find that
spiritual elevation might equally be found in the absence of clarity. It’s in these time-based
works that we are made aware of the refractions of time that may or may not lead to a
phenomenal disclosure; a state of grace obtained through the release of the self and an
embrace of the unknown.

Derek Brunen (CA, 1973), graduated from Piet Zwart Institute in 2010 and currently lives
and works in Rotterdam. He has presented solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Gallery,
Or Gallery and CSA Space, Vancouver and has also participated in group exhibitions at
Sparwasser HQ, Berlin, Prince Takamado Gallery, Tokyo and the Western Front, Vancouver.

Nu al de leukste tentoonstelling van het jaar! In een soort zuurstokkleurige films en video-installaties toont
Mika Rottenberg (1974) allerlei bizarre arbeidsprocessen waarin lichamelijke ‘afvalstoffen’ als zweet, bloed,
haar, nagels of tranen soms worden vermengd met sla of make-up om nieuwe, eveneens bizarre producten
voort te brengen. Hoofdrollen zijn vaak weggelegd voor zwetende bodybuilders en zeer zwaarlijvige dames die
in het echte leven hun geld verdienen met het ‘crushen’ van mannen. De films worden fraai gepresenteerd,
binnen steeds een andere ruimtelijke setting. Ze hebben een sterk ritme, waardoor je er helemaal in wordt
meegezogen. Ze zijn te absurd voor woorden en ongelooflijk grappig. Tegelijkertijd leveren ze commentaar op
bestaande ideeën over vrouwelijke zelfbeschikking, de idealisering van het lichaam in de media en de positie
van arbeiders in een geglobaliseerde economie. Wat wil je nog meer?
2. Ben Kinmont ‘Prospectus Amsterdam’

Kunstverein, meer een curatorial office dan galerie, is verhuisd naar de Gerard Doustraat 132 en biedt daar
nu als eerste een overzicht van het fascinerende werk van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Ben Kinmont (1963),
als onderdeel van een reizend onderzoek naar diens kunstenaarspraktijk. Kinmonts beelden en acties zijn een
poging om een directe, persoonlijke relatie te ontwikkelen tussen kunstenaar en beschouwer, waarbij de kunst
dient als mediator. Zijn acties variëren van afwassen in een museumrestaurant, het ontvangen van
onbekenden bij hem thuis, of het met passanten op straat discussiëren over de mogelijkheid van een toevallig
gesprek als een vorm van kunst. Documentatie van deze acties, in allerlei vormen, bewaart hij in
archiefdozen, die bij Kunstverein kunnen worden doorgekeken. Ook kun je er meer te weten komen over zijn
projecten ‘An exhibition in your mouth’ en ‘Carl Andre killed his wife’.

Liefhebbers van Bas Jan Ader kunnen bij ZingerPresents het werk zien van een hedendaagse volgeling, de
Canadese kunstenaar Derek Brunen (1973). In de video Home From Work zien we hoe Brunen in de stad
Toronto van zijn atelier naar zijn huis wandelt – met zijn ogen dicht. De wandeling duurt veertig minuten en
gaat dwars door de binnenstad. Anders dan bij Ader het geval zou zijn geweest, brengt Brunen het er zonder
kleerscheuren vanaf, maar spannend is het wel. Dat T-shirt dat hij aanheeft, met de opdruk ‘Please don’t leave
me’ (een titel van een werk van Bas Jan Ader), is misschien een beetje too much, maar vooruit. Ook mooi is de
foto van twee oranje-rode bolletjes in een zwart vlak. Als je goed kijkt zie je adertjes lopen: het blijken de
binnenkanten te zijn van de ogen van de kunstenaar. Critics Picks, Kunstbeeld Online, by Arjan Reinders
Richting Zingerpresents alwaar Derek Brunen wandelt op zoek naar tranen, en iets had met zwarte
handschoenen.

In zijn eerste solotentoonstelling na zijn afstuderen presenteert kunstenaar Derek Brunen zich in
ZINGERpresents. In zijn werk laat begeeft Brunen zich op het raakvlak tussen het onbewuste en het hyperalerte, onder andere in zijn film Blind (2007-2011).
