Labor Day: American & Jewish Values America loves Labor Day, a special holiday dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers that bring strength, prosperity and well-being to the country. Created out of the Labor Movement during the 1800s, it became a federal holiday in 1894 and is always held on the first Monday of September. It is interesting to note that the Labor Movement is linked to the working class of Jewish immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many were employed in labor-intensive industries, most notably the garment industry. Garment production was notorious for exploiting workers with sweatshop conditions, low pay and child labor. These Jewish Americans fought for workers’ rights and helped gain workforce fairness while improving their lives and the lives of their family members. This struggle should come as no surprise, as Jewish tradition teaches the basic morals of treating workers with dignity and promoting the idea that the individually powerless can act collectively to even the scales of power. Today, Labor Day may only be associated with the end of summer or retail sales to the general population, but we should take a moment and remember for those before us who shaped our work values and environments. from Oy to Joy is supported by Kavod partners and community donations.
